IPhone locked on restore screen. Don't know PUK.

Here is a long story. Please help if you can follow.
I was given a 3G iPhone as a present. My friend had one supported by SFR when she lived in France. She could not use it in America when she came back. So, she got a new iPhone with AT&T and gave me her other one.
I am with Verizon so I use another phone for calling and texting. I use the iPhone just like as an itouch -- for my music and wifi.
Well, my screen stopped working. I restored the phone, thinking that might solve the problem. It didn't. I eventually had someone open up the phone and attach loose cable. That fixed my touch screen, but now I cannot get off the iTunes/USB screen. It came up after i restored my iphone.
Now, my only options are "slide for emergency," which lets me dial emergency #s (not much help). I can press the info and see the IMEI # and the ICCID #. Last, i can try to unlock the PUK where I am prompted 3x to input a number. I dont have the right number.
Any ideas on how i can use this iPhone once again to listen to music? That's all I want. Is that so bad?

I'm afraid without an unlock for your SIM card you can't set up the phone again.

Plug it in to power for at least 15 minutes. If it doesn't automatically come on, try a Reset... press the home and sleep/lock buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities. If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that, and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running. if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way

If you have to restore, yes everything will be erased from your iPhone. If you have a backup, you can put that backup after the restore.

There is nothing that you can do to get rid of the balance on your own. Contact iTunes Store Support and seek their assistance. I believe that they can reset your balance for you.

I've had this once too... you have to go to your home screen, and push the bottom key twice (like you would double click on your computer) and then you'll see some icons on the bottom of the screen. Swish left (by dragging the icons to the right) and there you are! You'll find the buttoms for forward, backward and play / stop.

Need to restore iPhoto - don't know where from...

I recently had to do an erase and install of OS X (10.4) on my iMac (flat screen G4/700). I didn't even think about iPhoto, because I assumed that it would be reinstalled when I put the OS back on. No such luck. My problem now is that I don't know where my version of iPhoto came from originally, so that I can try to reinstall it. I never purchased iLife, so I'm fairly sure that it came on the computer or with one of the OS X versions that I purchased along the way. I still have the original OS X install (and hardware restore) discs (10.1.4) that came with my iMac. In addition, I have the original retail Jaguar 10.2 discs as well as the Tiger 10.4 discs. I can't find the option to install iPhoto on any of them when I boot from the install disc and try to only install bundled software or do a customized install. Does anyone out there know where my original iPhoto came from, what version it was, and where I might find it to reinstall??

Thanks to all for the prompt and effective recommendations. I used Pacifist on my 10.2 Install discs and got iPhoto installed. Now my problem is that it is version 1.1.1. I know that I was using a newer version than that... Maybe I purchased an upgrade along the way? Could that have been possible? Is there any way to upgrade to version 2 or 4?? Are there upgrades on the Tiger install discs? I read on some other boards that Apple offered Version 2 as a download to those that had purchased Macs and had version 1 on them...??? Any knowledge about this? I have run Software Update and it says that there are no updates available for any of my software... Did I need to install an entire package from the install discs? I only installed the iPhoto app. Maybe the updater isn't seeing my iPhoto version?
