IPhone locked up - frozen. How to "reset"??

I was browsing in Safari and the thing locked up solid. No response to anything, no buttons work, can't put it to sleep with the top botton, no touch screen, no home key - thing - just half a web page stuck on my screen. Tried plugging it into the dock and still nothing.
I keep reading about "resetting" or doing a "hard reset" on the forum but how do I do that? Not a "restore" but basically a "reboot" - other than smashing the thing with a hammer - how do I re-boot it?
I haven't had any problems with this phone so far, but right now I need to make calls and I can't because my iBrick is.... a brick. That scares me.
Help please??

Push and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time. I believe 10-15 seconds will do it. When you see the apple logo, you can release .

Thanks very much for your very helpful post, Chris. Today my iPhone 3GS froze just after I took a photo. Pressing the sleep/wake button or the home button got no results. I went by the Apple Store, but couldn't get an appointment until tomorrow. The scheduler at the store offered no suggestions. After I got home, I found your suggestion about pushing the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously. Viola! It worked. You're the genius! What a simple solution to a scary problem. I wish all troubleshooting efforts with electronics were that easy and that successful! Many thanks.

Macbook internal battery frozen - how to reset?

Hi all,
I have here a late model macbook with an internal battery - it seems to have frozen on startup, the screen is just white. I've tried holding the power button down for 10 seconds, but it doesn't reset. Even if I close the screen, the backlight for the display remains lit. I'm sort of stuck trying to figure out how to reset this thing, in normal cases I would remove the battery but obviously its not possible in this case.
If anyone can advise where to go from here it would be appreciated. Otherwise I'm guessing I just need to leave it to one side until the battery finally drains.

The problem is that I can't get to the initial boot phase to reset the SMC, as the macbook had frozen with a white screen after starting - i.e. it was running and I had no way of rebooting it (as mentioned, holding down the power button had no effect). I left it at the office overnight so the battery should be well and truly drained by now, I'm hoping I'll be able to plug in the power and reset the SMC as you suggest.

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>About=>Carrier?

While shifting an app to a folder the screen froze. Holding down the top button has not forced a reset.

Hold down the home screen and power button at the same time until it shuts off.That's how you force it to shut down when it freezes like that.

hey there, so as the title suggests...
my clock on the top right of the screen is frozen i put my cursor over it and i just get the beach ball loading thing...
is there any way i can reset it or relaunch it?

You're not alone. I am having similar problems with my Ipod 5th gen 30gb.
When I connect it to my laptop (Vista - basic) it is not recognised by itunes. Itunes simply locks up.
So far I have tried the following to no avail:
Checked my pc's device manager - it recognises the device and says it is functioning properly.
Checked the drivers to make sure they are upt to date.
Uninstalled & reinstalled a previous version of itunes (as it worked fine before the latest release).
Reinstalled the latest itunes.
Reset the ipod.
Put the ipod into disk mode and reconnected to itunes.
Have tried to use the windows tool to scan and fix any bad sectors but it fails to complete a scan without locking that up as well.
Placed into disk mode when fully charged and then allowed the battery to drain completely. Then reconnected ipod (in disk mode)and it still is not recognised and locks up itunes.
At this point I dont really want to part with another $300 odd dollars for a new one.
