  • Desktop makes strange clicking noises when resuming from hibernation

Hi  I have a three week old HP Pavilion Desktop 2022 running Windows 7 Home Premium.    I have noticed over the last few days that if  I leave it in hibernation mode for quite some time, when I wake it up Windows starts perfectly but I get 7 or 8 strange clicks from the desktop unit itself.   The desktop doesnt do this during normal startup or restart only when coming out of sleep or hibernation??  Does anyone else have this issue?  Is it normal as I realise whilst in hibernation the fan is not running and it has been extremely warm.  It does sound a bit like  a cooling noise but hope someone can reassure me regarding my concern.  Thank you, all answers are apprecaited.

I'm gonna just say it - Hibernate doesn't work all the time. I've never trusted it, never used it and recommend that no one use it.
there got it out of the way.
Why did I say that - If you don't plug anything into your PC (cameras, printers, scanners, phones, etc) Or load any other software except for updates from MS and your virus protection, then Hibernate works awesome...
but as soon as anything is added... that app or piece of hardware needs to conform exactly to all the Hibernate specifications and sometimes they don't and they cause some problems.
So the fact that you had a bluescreen means something isn't playing nice. That dump file can be evaluated, but I would start isolating the problem by removing any hardware you've added to see if that helps.
Or - don't use Hibernate - shut it down when you don't use it, and power on when you do
hope that helps and that I don't sound to terrible
    good luck

  • Strange clicking noise when rMBP13 is tilted

Hello All.. I found no existing thread related to this issue, so starting a new one.. This is to let you all know/get your views and experience regarding a (formerly faint but growingly clearer) clicking noise from my one-year old 13 inch retina macbook, and to share the story of my monstrous ordeal trying to get it fixed by Apple. I have bit of a story here.. Sorry I tried my best to shorten it, but this is the shortest it could get..
About 3 or 4 months back, I started hearing this faint clicking noise from inside the case of my macbook whenever i tilted it, not while working or when the device is stationary, only when I flip the device to one side, usually about 90 degree, with lid open or closed.. When I bought it, my macbook had absolutely no noise from anywhere.. I live in Europe, and living rooms here can be freakishly quiet.. And I used to love it when there was not a click or a hiss out of place while working or carrying it around... To me, this made the device feel solid, and gave the impression of no moving parts inside, even though there were still the cooling fans.. But even they seemed held together so tight not making any noise out of the ordinary.. Of course one could hear them pretty well when they ran in top speed.. eg. during some heavy graphics, games etc.. But this again was a very steady whir.. which upon closing the heavy graphics app, slowed down steadily bringing the noise back to a zero. (I don't know if it's just me, I always thought it was intentionally part of the design, to try and make the whole device look and sound as solid as possible, like nothing lying loose inside).. I used to admire this in Apple devices.. But maybe I was wrong.. I don't know.. Maybe it's only my macbook, or is it all retina macbooks and only I notice and care about such stuff?
Initially the noise was very faint.. You really needed to be in a quiet room to hear it.. I checked the online forums, there was not much hint except one where it talked about some heat sink or something touching the metal body or so.. (did not really follow that).. Anyway I did not want to open up and experiment since my device was in warranty, so I took advice from the Apple support folks online who asked me to take my macbook to an authorised service centre nearby. (There was no genius bar or so near where I live, it's a smaller town in Germany)..
The first place I took it to, was an authorised reseller/service center chain in Germany called 'Compustore'. My experience with them was outright annoying.. The first time i took it to them, they said they couldn't hear anything, as if they were trying to get rid of me.. Then I somehow convinced them to listen to it carefully in a quiet room, they did it and finally nodded that they could hear it, told me that it could be the fan.. (very convenient guess).. Anyway they asked me to leave my macbook there for 2 weeks so a technician can take a look.. (I don't know if its Germany, or does it usually take that long everywhere else for every service?) I did so, after about a week, I got a call from them that my macbook is ready. Upon arriving, they told me that they've replaced the right-fan.. I first thought woww.. they've found it and fixed it.. But when I checked the device myself, i could hear the same clicking noise.. No it wasn't the same.. It was louder..!!! And the worst was only yet to come.. None of them at the store could now hear it !! Furious, I asked them many questions, like how did they know that it was the fan? And why would they replace the fan without knowing it's the real cause.. Finally they had their least experienced (apprentice looking) guy tell me there isn't anything else they could do so I can leave.
Puzzled and totally ****** off, I walked straight to another reseller 'Gravis Retail'. At this place, everyone could hear the noise.. Loud and clear..!! (Thanks to the Compustore guys, I think they'd opened it up and made a bigger mess of things.) The Gravis guys asked me to leave it there (again 2 weeks!!).. After waiting for more than 2 weeks, I did not get any call or email from Gravis, I called up Apple support to follow up. A gentleman from Apple senior management who deals with Europe, spoke to me, followed up with Gravis and found that they had sent the device to another branch of theirs in Berlin, but the folks at Berlin couldn't hear any noise, so they returned it to my city again, and folks here could hear it and so on.. Furious again, I visited Gravis and asked them why no one called me, the guy had no clue, apologized to me, and promised me that they will have their technician look at it again, first thing next morning.. After 2 days, I got a call from them. When I visited the store they told me that they compared it with other retina 13 inch macbooks and all of them have the noise.. !!!! Extremely angry, I asked them to prove it to me by letting me listen to their other retina macbooks.. Of course, suddenly all of their reference macbooks magically disappeared, some taken back by customers, some went to other locations blah blah.. (The one on display at the store was wired with some beeping device etc, so they did not want to show that one to me, and anyway I wouldn't consider that demo model to be a good reference point).. Finally they too told me there isn't anything more they could do indicating me to leave..
After a month of leaving it at two different service centres (one of them causing the noise to grow little louder), I have the macbook with me now.. I still hear the noise when I tilt the device (don't tell me not to tilt it).. The gentleman from Apple senior management Europe stopped responding to my emails.. My 1-year warranty ran out this month.. Feeling insecure of what else could go wrong with my device in future, I have now bought the AppleCareProtectionPlan (or rather was cornered into buying it)..
I am not sure what to do next.. Some of you may tell me its just a little noise after all, and until my macbook has a real problem, there are better things in life I could worry about.. Maybe yes, but I what about the pathetic service I got from those "Authorized Apple Service Centres"?.. And the 'Compustore' guys.. How could they get away with such reckless service, that too in such a technologically advanced nation..? Of course I gave them bad feedback in the reviews, but I don't think anyone cares about those here in Germany.. (I think employees are safer than customers here).. And the Customer Support folks from Apple did not make my situation any better.. Puzzled!! and beginning to wonder - After paying the premium on these Apple products, is it really asking too much for these devices to be flawless? Is it wrong to expect something better than just sugar-coated words of "apologies", "I understand your situation Sir", and "we will surely see what best can we offer you" from Apple phone support team? If we have to live with these issues, why buy Apple?

yes. mine clicks also. really poor QC if you ask me. I've had all of the iphone versions and this is the worst quality i've seen. This is not the same Apple...
I'm taking it back and hopefully they'll give me a new one since I've only had it 3 weeks. AND NOT A REFURB either...
Apple doesn't use refurbished devices for replacements.  However, don't expect a 'new' one either, because that's not something that is promised in your warranty.  What you'll likely get is a remanufactured iPhone.

  • Strange clicking noise

Hello all. I hope someone can help me with this question.
I have a 30g ipod that is less than a year old. I believe I purchased it last October. It has started to make a strange clicking noise when I play music.
I tend to use it alot since I can listen to music at work. I would say that it runs for about 9 hours a day. Most of the time when it is in use, it is hooked up directly to the speakers and the battery charger.
Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks for your help.

      Windows XP

    Hi Dakota!
First, have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times (leave it on the white side of the switch).
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to attempts this quite a few times. Also, if you connect your iPod to your computer or another power source while resetting, that can be more effective.
If resetting doesn't help, then I would suggest that you try restoring your iPod in iTunes.
For info on restoring, see this article about it:

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make clicking noises when pressure is applied to the unibody?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in late July of this year. Recently, I have noticed that when I begin to type on the keyboard, the unibody will make a faint sound when pressure from my hands is applied to the MacBook. I also notice a faint clicking noise when I pick up the MacBook Pro to move it somewhere. Additionally, the screen hinge makes a faint clicking noise when the screen is opened. Are these sounds normal?

Check if an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) is closer, as some do not trust Geek Squad to diagnose something as simple as "all the keys are missing". But judge for yourself.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434

  • Small clicking noise when moving

hello, ive only got the new macbook pro 13 the other day. when i slightly move the machine, it makes a small clicking noise (when its running with lid open), but it doesn't every time, like 3 out of 10 times. and i dont mean moving as in taking it into a different room, i mean like a slight move if i need to stretch or a wobble of my body with the macbook. any advice pls? thanks

My 2.53ghz 13" macbook pro is doing the same thing. This is odd because the 13" unibody macbook I had before this also has SMS and it never did this. If it is the SMS sensor, it is kicking in for very slight movements.
Could it be the SMS sensor is a little too sensitive? If so, is this something I should be concerned about?

  • Little clicking noise when computer picked up or moved.

is it normal that my macbook pro 13 makes a little clicking noise when moved suddenly or picked up ? it sounds like the optical or hard drive to me.

    Hi nomadikpat,
Your machine has an SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) that is designed to park the drive head inside your hard drive when the machine receives a quick and sudden external force. This safety feature is designed to preserve the HD so that a mechanical failure doesn't potentially cause data loss.

  • My iMac makes strange clicking noises on the back of it

It makes some random clicking noises on the back of my iMac that just irritates me alot. What is wrong with it? I purchased it like 2 months ago and I don't think it's a virus or anything. Can anyone help?
    Thank you

    Hello:
I suggest you take the computer in for diagnosis.  Strange noises are not normal.
Incidentally, there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - NONE.

    Has anyone had this problem?

in the future, buy this, this is what the Pros use:
for drops, accidents, spills, loss, or theft, purchase a TYPE of insurance called "inland marine insurance"
roughly $30 per year for a device(s) with 0 deductible, used same for over 20 years, same insurance the pros use on their portable devices.
very cheap, very useful insurance, most people dont know about same.

  • Strange clicking noise in standyby mode??

When i put my ATV into standby (thats all it seems to do, it wont turn off) the hard drive seems to stay active. I hear it wurring all the time. Then every 10 minutes or so, it clicks, almost like a little pop sound?? Does anyone else get this? Does anyone know what it is?

    Screemer wrote:
Oh right. interesting. Its a fairly loud pop, thats all that concerned me. A lot louder than any other hard drive noises.
my satellite set top box makes a fairly noticeable noise when the HDD goes to sleep. can't say i've ever heard my appletv do it, but it is the most likely cause of the noise.
if you are getting pops and abnormal noises during playback of sync'd content then i would start to worry.

  • Ipod mini 2nd gen: clicking noise when plugged in only

My mini just makes clicking noises when I plug it into the usb port. I thought it was the hard drive after reading tons of posts about the clicking noise, and got a compact flash replacement but it is still clicking. I dont think it is the battery. If it was, it should hold some sort of charge shouldnt it?
    What could be causing it?
Is my mini out of whack? I did drop it before it died 2 years ago, but it worked for quite a few months after dropping it though. I just got around to working on it now cuz I miss it.

thanks for the reply. well changing the hard drive was easy. it might be the battery. it did give me some errors before it crapped out. i just dont remember what those were. i think it was an apple with a lightning over it, which would indicate a bad battery i suppose. i will try to change the battery and see how that goes. i just cant troubleshoot since nothing comes on, except for a faint clicking noise when it's hooked up to the usb.

  • I can't get my ipod classic (120GB) to work. I am getting error code 1434, and the ipod is making a lot of clicking noises when plugged in

After coming back from Hawaii, my Ipod classic doesn't work anymore. When plugged into itunes, it says that it may be corrupt, and that I need to restore it. I have tried this, but everytime it gives me an error code of 1434. When I click more information, it sends me to a support page, but not for error code 1434. I tried all of the steps on the page hoping that it would help. Also my ipod is making  a lot of clicking noises when it is trying to run, alomst as if it is skipping inside and can't fully run. Can anyone help me ?

Clicking sounds from an iPod that has a hard drive for storage is not a good thing.  It usually means the hard drive is faulty.  That is the likely reason for getting an error during the attempt to Restore.
If you use a Mac, you can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, connect the iPod and instead of running iTunes, run Disk Utility.  Does the iPod appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?  If it does, select the iPod device in the sidebar, not the volume indented below the device (if there is one).  Go to the Erase tab.  Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Name does not matter.  Click on Security Options and choose to write a single pass of zeros over the entire disk.  This serves as a good "stress test" for the iPod's hard drive.  Back on the main window, click Erase.
This takes longer than a regular erase, but you should see steady progress.  If it errors out, or stalls for a LONG time (like hours), the hard drive is likely to be faulty.
If it completes successfully, quit Disk Utility, run iTunes and try to do another Restore

A "clicking noise" is often a sign that a hard drive is malfunctioning. Suggest that you power down the device and take it to an Apple store to have them take a look, or contact Customer Service at Apple for instructions.

    Hi p,
The CPU doesn't make noise, so it's probably fans you're hearing, which would correspond with the heat you're feeling. Read this link to see if there's a process running too high:
