IPhone Music Sorting - Album year field

Hi
I originally posted the below in the iPhone section, but I think it may be more appropriate here.
I have a selection of radio shows and podcasts that I want to sort into a certain order on my iPhone, but no matter what I do in iTunes I cannot get them to display correctly.  Here's what I have done so far:
1. Split the 'songs' into 'albums', with one album for each series/ group of podcasts.
2. Made sure that all of the 'songs' are correctly labelled in the 'info' tab.  The following is the same for all songs:
     - Artist
     - Album Artist
     - All other fields are blank (with the exception of 'Year' which I will come on to later)
3. Changed the 'Album Sort' field on the 'Sorting' tab so that the albums are sorted in chronological order and the actual title of the 'album' is ignored.  e.g.:
     - XFM Series 1 (from 2001) is labelled as 'A' in the 'Album Sort' field
     - XFM Series 2 (from 2002) is labelled as 'B'
     - XFM Series 3 (from 2003) is labelled as 'C'
     - XFM Series 4 (from 2004) is labelled as 'D'
     - Radio 2 shows (from 2005) are labelled as 'E'
Doing the above gets the albums to display perfectly in iTunes, with them being sorted in chronological order as dictated by the 'Album Sort' field.
I then synced the albums onto my iPhone and expected all to be well, but instead found that when I went to the 'Artists' tab they were listed in reverse chronological order (newest album first).  So to fix this I went into iTunes and tried the following:
1. Went into the 'info' tab for all albums and set the year to 2001 for all.  As the year is the same for all it should now sort by 'Album Sort' in theory.  That didn't work though so I tried...
2. Set the years in reverse order for each album, so that the latest series 'Radio 2 shows' was labelled as 2001, and the oldest album 'XFM Series 1' was labelled as 2005.
That still didn't work, but even more strangely when I view the album on the iPhone a different year is being displayed under the title, e.g.:
XFM Series 3
12 Songs, 686 mins
2006
I have checked that album in iTunes and 2006 is not contained anywhere on the album or song info tabs.  I have tried to add a different year in the year field, and also delete the year field, but no matter what I do 2006 continues to be displayed.
Where is this year being held within the file and how can I change it?  I checked the ID3 tags for a song from that album in VLC and could not see 2006 referenced anywhere.
Thanks for any help!

Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • IPhone music sorted incorrectly

Since enabling iTunes in the Cloud, my music is sorted incorrectly on my iPhone. Albums starting with "S" will appear under "T", for instance.
Even after disabling iTunes in the Cloud, the problem persists. I've tried synching my phone, to no avail.
See the attached photo for an example.

First off, thank you for the screenshot, users fail to post these and it helps out a ton.
The only thing that stjmps me is Truthfully Truthfully is sorted under V.
I switched to my albums tab on my iPhone and I have songs like "The You Asked..." which is sorted under Y because it ignores "The."  I also have a song "The Wa.." sorted under W, which is again, ignoring "The" before it.  I don't think there is any problem here, it's just the way it's sorted.
Are you having this issue with your songs tab or artists?  What about playlists?

  • IPhone music - phantom album

I just transferred music selected from my iMac to my iPhone 5; somehow, an album which has never been on the iMac (or the iPhone) is now on the iPhone. It's not even a genre I listen to (it's U2's 'Songs of Innocence'); any idea how it got there, and, more importantly, how I can get rid of it? The 'automatically fill free space with songs' button wasn't selected; the phantom album doesn't appear in the iPhone window in iTunes on the iMac, so I can't delete it.  Any help will be appreciated.

Hard to believe you just noticed this. Apple gifted the album to every iTunes user more than a month ago at the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus announcement. If you really don't want it, follow these instructions:
Remove iTunes gift album "Songs of Innocence" from your iTunes music library and purchases

  • Sort album by artist or album by artist/year & compliations behavior

    I am running iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Windows 7 (64-bit)
I was wondering about the behavior of sort album by artist or album by artist/year. Instead of sorting solely by artist or artist/year, it seems to take into account album artist. Is this correct? Previous versions of iTunes (iTunes 7 and iTunes 8) used only the album and artist field not album artist. Is there anyway to force it to sort solely by artist and ignore album artist?
I am wondering because I currently use the album artist field to hold information about featured artists, featured instrumentalists, conductors, alternative band names, etc and reserve the artist field to describe the more generalized album artist. For me, this organizational scheme works better because my iPod does not feature offer any access to album artist. My current solutions are to roll back to iTunes 7 or 8 or change the sort album artist field for every entry which has information in the album artist field; neither of which are long term solutions.
Finally, I would like to group compliations (musical soundtracks, movie soundtracks, etc) where the artist might differ by album but still use the sort by album by artist to organize the rest of my music using List View. Is this possible?
I really wish iTunes provided more options for sorting music.
    Thanks!

Album Artist has been supported since iTunes 7 (7.1 I think) and normally takes preference over Artist when it comes to grouping tracks in iTunes. As you say the iPod Classic doesn't work quite the same way. You'll find my extensive thoughts on fixing things at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp You might find that different vlaues of Group Compilations and Use Album Artists restore the view you were familiar with, otherwise it might be time to rethink the strategy.
If it is simply a mattter of swapping Album Artist with Artist then I can (and will) rustle up a script for that... It will end up on the list at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp shortly. More complex rearrangements of properties are also possibe once you know what you want to achieve.

  • Sorting albums by year doesn't work properly in new iTunes 11.

Sorting albums by year doesn't work properly in new iTunes 11.
    See the screenshots below.
There's a kind of albums. Double CD in one set. Queen "The Works" 1984, for example.
First CD is the original release and the second one is bonus CD for the original album's reissue in 2011.
iTunes 10 took year info from track 1 of CD1 for "sort album by year" function.
But new iTunes 11 takes the highest value of year in the album's track list.
Same things with additional bonus tracks for the album's reissues.
See the screenshot of Madonna "Like a Virgin" 1984 album.
So my collection is in a huge mess after last update to iTunes 11.
It's a big problem. And must be solved to the next update.

I noticed this too, and I think it gets even more complicated when you think about the difference between how you want Re-releases to be ordered: based upon the intial release year (like you have described above), and Compilations or Greatest Hits: where you want them to be sorted by when the albums were actually released. iTunes 11 seems to just grab the date of the most recently released song on an album. This worked fine for 2/3 of my Compilation albums, because they just happened to be released the same year as the latest song on each album.
Compilation example (released: 2003, latest song on album: 1969):
This is what I submitted to Apple as feedback:
This issue is actually aimed at  iTunes 11, but 10.6.3 is the most recent version number I could select in the drop-down menu.
As with normal albums, iTunes 11 puts a release year next to "Various Artists" in Albums > Expanded View (and also in the Songs and Genre Tabs). However, iTunes seems to produce this number by looking for the last released song on the album. This has worked fine for 2/3 of my compilations, but the third one is a 60s compilation released in 2003. It displays "1969" next to "Various Artists" and there are no tags available in Get Info to change this. This also happens to greatest hits collections.
When selecting View > View Options > "Artist" then "Year" in Album view, and View > View Options > "Year" in Artist and Genre view, the above issue causes compilations, greatest hits collections, and re-releases (Although users may want re-releases to be listed in order of original release) to be sorted in the wrong order.
Considering iTunes 11 has added this feature (in previous iTunes versions, "Year" would only appear next to individual tracks), it is a shame an "Album Year" or "Sort Album Year" hasn't been added to the Get Info options.
As is, the only solution I can think of is to change all track years to the release year of the album.
I imagine this might be a bit of an edge case, and not something the majority of iTunes users would care about, but then again, I could imagine a fair number of musicphiles wanting control over this metadata.

  • Is it possible to sort by multiple fields?

Is it possible to sort the music library by multiple fields in a prioritised order? For example, I would like to sort by the following columns, in the following order:
    Album Artist
    Album
    Track Number
for some reason I can't seem to do this, sorting by Album artist alone is not working for me, as some CD's I've imported have featured artists and this breaksup the listing order.
    Thanks

    Thanks Thomas
Unfortunately, this solution did not work for me, cover flow still shows multiple instances of the same artwork for various groups of tracks from the same album.
The thing I don't understand is why sorting by the "sort album artist" field does not group all the tracks from an album together.
My specific example (I still can't get a screenshot posted):
I have two Gwen Stefani albums, both ripped from CD (not imported from the itunes store). both albums have a majority of track where Gwen is the only artist and two or three track with featured artists. I have filled the "album artist" and "sort album artist" tags to all read Gwen Stefani, however, if I sort by either of these columns (in cover flow mode), what I get is this:
all the tracks from one ablum where Gwen Stefani is the artist
then all the tracks from the other album where Gwen Stefani is the artist
then (in alphabetical order by featured artist) the remaining tracks from both albums - ie, the albums are mixed up
for each group of track I see an cover flow art work.
I should say that I have turned off the compilation tag on all of my albums because this ends up saving the file in a compilation folder, not in the artist folder on my hard drive - but it doesn't make a difference either way to the way I see the files sorted in itunes.
    It's really frustrating!

  • Sorting album (under Artists) on iPhone 5 by year

Okay, so I have realised that when I go to any Artist in "Music" on my iPhone 5 (an Artist that has more that 2 albums), the albums are sorted by year, but from newest to oldest.
Is there any way to change this setting where all albums, under any given artist, are displayed from oldest to newest?
The metadata is correct (all albums have their respective years of release, and I even put the year at the beginning of the Album Title... I personally prefer to hear an Artist's discography starting from his/her earliest work to the latest).
As mentioned, I am using an iPhone 5 that is running iOS 8.3.

Dragging music files directly from Windows and dropping onto the device?  I have no idea how that is even possible, but right there you're deviating from the intended design -- iTunes is meant to be the intermediary.
Are you suggesting that i first update the music in the itunes library and then drag & drop to the iphone? In a way, not manually manage the music?
Yes, that IS what what I'm suggesting, and that is what manually managing means in the iTunes world.  It is a media manager for your devices, and if you're bypassing it then its no wonder you're struggling.  It sounds like you're coming from a mp3 player perspective, and like it or not, that's not how i-devices work.
I'm sorry to say, but if you try to force things another way it will be a rocky relationship to say the least.

  • Album Art Sorting incorrectly in Compilations/Albums iphone Music App listing/tab

Album Art Sorting incorrectly in Compilations/Albums iphone Music App listing/tab
Sounds like a mouthful, but basically im saying that I have a bunch of compilations that when displayed in itunes on my pc,
show the album art which is set for the first track. This is to be expected.
But when i upload the compilations to my iPhone 5, and i open up the Music app and select the compilations tab...
The same compilations show another album art that is actually associated with another track in the compilation.
When i looked for a pattern, i found that it would basically take the album art from the track in the compilation based on the artists name in reverse alphabetical order.
So if i had album art associated with every track in the compilation, normally it would show in the listing the album art of the first track... but now it was actually the album art of the artist name starting closest to the letter z.
I've tested this many times. very annoying. but to explain again...
If i have a compilation containing artists from Coldplay to Ziggy Marley... no matter where in the listing Ziggy Marley is listed first to last... it will display the Album art associated to Ziggy Marley in the List view for the Compilations or Albums tab in the Music app on an iPhone 5.
Normally you would expect it to show the album art associated with the first track in the listing as it does in Itunes so as to keep uniformity between what you upload in iTunes and what you see in the Music app on the iPhone.
THIS IS A BUG APPLE!!!... test it for yourselves... someone broke your db sorting in the new itunes. ITunes 11, with iPhone 5
    Please fix!
    Thank you kindly...

another note... when i select the album from the list (on the iphone, in the music app) and it slides over to show all tracks in the compilation...
it then shows the proper album art as it should.
Also, when i check cover flow it then shows another incorrect cover?

  • Can you sort albums by release date, rather than year, in album view?

I love the new album view in iTunes 11, but the only problem I have with it is sometimes albums are in the wrong order.
For example, last year Green Day released a trilogy of albums called ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! but since they were released in the same year, they're ordered as ¡Dos!, ¡Tré, ¡Uno! when sorted by artist and then year which really doesn't sit right with me.
In short, the sorting options for albums view are very limited, is there any way to extend them?
Also I'm aware that I could, as a cheap fix, change the sorting in album to the release date backwards, but I'd rather not do that as it would make it a bit more troublesome for me to navigate my albums on my iPhone.
    Thanks!

I agree that Apple should improve the year field to be an actual date.
I am not 100% happy doing this, but when you have multiple albums from a single artist for the same release year, a temporary solution is to chage the album title by adding an outline type letter before album titles for that year, so that they appear in the correct order:
    David Bowie
    1977
    a. Low
    David Bowie
    1977
    b. "Heroes"
    etc
This could help in the short term until Apple changes that field.

  • Can I sort album by year in iTunes 11?

Specifically, when I'm viewing my music in "Artist" view (with the artist list on the left, albums on right), is there a way to set the albums to sort by year rather than alphabetically?

Thanks!  Why in the world this isn't the default setting is beyond me though.   No one who has had vinyl or CD's files by 'name of album'.  (at least no one i've ever known!)

  • Sort Album by Artist/Year Not Working Correctly

For the Beatles, I have bought 3 albums from iTunes - Please Please Me, With the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour. For some reason, using the above sorting Magical Mystery Tour appears at the top of the list, despite the fact that the year field is correctly entered for all 3. There is no info in the 'Sort Year' field either. I have quite a good understanding of how the iTunes library works, but this has me baffled (and annoyed)

    dannycorker wrote:
It appears they are, although I refuse to believe this is the accepted behaviour - has no one else complained about this?
It could simply be a weakness is the way this was all designed. If you look at the information Gracenote uses, it's not unusual for all tracks on a 60's compilation album to be incorrectly listed as the same year, often the year the compilation was released. The same thing tends to happen with re-issued albums. That's down to whoever inputs the information into Gracenote for that album, often a bored record company employee.
First of all, you could try changing the year for each documentary to the year the album was produced and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you have to decide how to handle it.
    Accept it as it is.
Change the year for the documentary to the same year as the album and simply kid yourself that it's the correct year. (I'm not being flippant, but if the documentary is all footage from album release year, then "technically", the doumentary is from that 60's year.)
Leave the year of the documentary track blank, but put the year (2010) into the track's "Comments" field instead.
Propose a workable solution to Apple via Apple Feedback. (I am being a bit flippant now. Sorry, but you'll be in for a long wait before anything might change.)
Get Gracenote to change their text fields, get the people who input the information into Gracenote to do so correctly and then get Apple to change iTunes to recognise those changes. (Now I am being very flippant. Good luck with this one!) Oh! And hope Apple never decide to change from Gracenote to someone else!
Number 2 or 3 are probably your best bet.

  • Play Order on Album Sort by Year Funk

I was super pleased to find that iTunes 9.01 fixed the bug regarding sorting multi-disc albums while sorting album by year.
However, now I'm noticing that when I'm playing an artist's discography, while sorted by year, instead of playing the albums in chronological order (like they've been visually sorted), it plays the albums in alphabetical order (default sort). So I could be playing an artists' first of five albums, but if the album name starts with a 'Z' then it will just stop the playlist all together, as if the end of said playlist has been reached.
Also, does anyone else who sorts by year find it annoying that iTunes finds it prudent to always switch back to sorting by album alphabetically whenever I'm not looking? I find that quite annoying.
    Any ideas? Thoughts? Thanks!

Oh poop. I just updated the two extensions "I Love Stars" and "Cover Stream."
I'm no longer having problems with my music stopping after 'all' of an artists' music plays 'all' through. But still, anyone else having similar issues?

  • Sorting Same Year Albums

Hello, I have looked for a solution, and so far nothing. Hope someone can help me here!
Here's my situation. I have separate Smart Playlists for my Artists, and I sort by year within them for the artist's chronological library of songs. Here's the issue: I have an instance or two where the artist released two albums in the same year (in this case - KISS released self-titled album "KISS" and "Hotter Than ****" both in 1974).
And again in this instance, it places these albums in Alphabetical view based on album title. This causes Hotter Than **** to be placed first, which isn't correct.
Is there a way to either refine for more precise release date, or a totally different way of going by this?
    Any help would rock

    I've had this problem too.
I solved it by entering a new value in the Album sorting field.
Select all songs > get info > Sorting
Note: The album title will still show as "Kiss".

  • Cover flow - Sort by Album/Year?

I love the cover flow feature on my iPhone but I am disappointed that it sorts based on Artist name. Is there a setting to make Cover flow - Sort by Album/Year?
