Iphone Netgear VPN

I just got a new Iphone and i am trying to use the iphone cisco client to connect to my Netgear FVS318 via IPsec. No matter what i do the devices will not connect. After about 15 seconds i get an error message on my iphone that "Server could not be found." i have spent several hours searching on the internet and i can't seem to find any information or anyone who has sucessfuly connected their iphone to a Netgear VPN router. ANy ideas?
As a last resort should i decide to get a new VPN router for the office and home what brand should i look at that will easily connect with the iphone? i assume cisco routers but those are way too expensive. Any input would be great.

The Cisco VPN will only connect to a Cisco router, firewall or VPN appliance. Technically standards based, but only cisco has implemented it in the "cisco way" The L2TP and PPTP are more generic configurations, but in all cases the VPN server must be explicitly configured to support your access.
It is possible to buy a Cisco router for a few hundred $ that will support the connection you need. Depends upon what you want to do. I am using a Cisco 1811 at my home, around 1500 list. If you do not have Cisco skills yourself, you will need to hire an engineer to configure it.

  • ASA Iphone, Ipad VPN client pre-shared key (PSK) special characters bug

I ran into this in a deployment of IPSec clients with apple ipad and iphone native vpn client. Here are details:
    Cisco ASA 8.2.5 OS
    Ipad, running 5.0.1
    Iphone i4S, running OS 5.0.1
Special characters make your pre-shared key more secure, so i used a password generator app to make one that coincidently included a " (quotation mark). After configuring this PSK on a Ipad, i was unable to connect. I saw nothing in the ASA logs, indicating the Ipad didnt even try to connect.
The Ipad generated the following error message:
    VPN Connection
    A configuration error occured
    OK Button
After searching for quite some time, i found this somewhat obscure reference to the bug:
    http://blogs.oreilly.com/iphone/2008/07/strong-passwords-can-hurt.html
    Special thx to this guy!
So i started to test special characters to see what would work, adding in 1 character at a time. Here is where I stopped:
    pre-shared-key !@#$%^&*()_-+=;:'<>,.
These characters worked in the PSK. If you are curious, and want to play, have fun. I assume the alphnumerics will work since those are pretty standard.
As a side note, here are a few more interesting items:
    1) The " (quote mark) does work when you run the real cisco vpn client. This was successful on a Windows 7 laptop with 5.X VPN Client.
    2) The ? (question mark) doesnt work as well, but that is a little easier to figure out because when you configure it on the ASA, context-sensitive help kicks in and knocks you off the config line.
    3) Iphone I4S suffers from the same issue - doesnt like quotes.
    4) Android is probably not affected by this bug, but I tested on an open source TUN driver- enabled adroid - not the bionic.
Hope that saves someone some time, sometime!
    W

    Thanks for the tip.
Help stamp out special characters in passwords. Their "strength" is a myth!

  • I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and a Netgear VPN Switch for wired connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect?

I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and also have a Netgear VPN Switch (FV5318) for internal wired ethernet connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect to each other?

Tesserax, I would like to keep the Airport Extreme in nplace before the Netgear FVS318 switch because I am using all of the 8 ethernet outputs distributed to 8 differerent locationsl  This way I can just use one of the LAN outputs from the Airport to feed the FVS318.  Here is what I think I am hearing you say:
Tne reason why the wired and wireless devices are not communicating is because the FVS318G is also a DHCP server and in conflict with the AEBS.
To remedy the situastion here is probably what I need to do in order:
    1. Change the LAN IP Address of the Netgear FVS318G to be the same subnet of the Airport Extreme.
    2. Then, disable the Netgear FVS318G as a DHCP server.
    3. Make sure the ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Airport Extreme connectis to the LAN port of the Netgear FVS318G.
    4. Restart everything.
Can you provide me the steps I need to take to get the right IP addresses from the Airport Extreme to put into the Netgear to fix the conflict?  I have the Airport Utility.  I also have two airport express hot spots, and two Apple TVs in addition to computers attached to the 8 ethernet lines.
    Thank you.

  • Iphone 3G VPN iPsec

So I was ecstatic about the new 3.0 features for the iPhone but the thing that really caught my eye was the ability to tether. I was thinking "hey, I can finally take road trips with my buddies while still working". So i get the update and tether successfully... I then go to connect to my vpn server which is over ipsec through AT&T Dialer and it gets stuck at Authentication... So now I have no idea what to do.

Using Cisco IPSec for VPN, the 3.0 change to the iPhone requires that the firewall/VPN concentrator to be set to allow IPSec VPN over NAT-T.
In the Cisco ASDM > Config > VPN > IKE > Gloabal Parameters > Check box for Enable IPSec over NAT-T

  • How can I remotely access files over the internet using iPhone? VPN? Do I need to use Server?

Please forgive my ignorance here, as I'm a Windows expert but have only been using Mac for two and a half years. Is it possible to securely access predefined directories on my iMac from a remote computer or device over the inernet, be it a MacBook Pro, iPhone or even a Windows computer or Android phone? Is there an advantage to an Apple-only approach (iPhone and Macs)? Do I need to use Server? Is VPN the method of choice, or is there some other method? I'm not looking to do remote desktop control, just remote file access. Right now I'm using DropBox for the things I need most, but I absolutely will not put sensitive information in there, and soon I will need to have access to more than what DropBox can hold. Also it may be worth noting that I'm currently an Android user but will be going back to iPhone soon if it would be advantageous in this regard.
    Thanks!
    Daniel

If you desire security, you definately want to use VPN so Lion Server will work.  Otherwise, if you have sysadmin experience (or know someone who does), there are free alternatives out there for vpn that can be setup on a cheap linux server and provide the same capabilities.

  • Anyone successfully ePrint from iPhone using VPN?

    Hi,
Just got an HP C410A ... set it up (wired and Wi-Fi), can print to it from my Mac.
If I connect my iPhone 4 (yes, with the printing firmware to my LAN (via VPN and Wi-Fi),
I can see my Mac (and telnet into it ... but the airprint stuff in the iPhone can't find any printers.
    Any suggestions?
BTW, I'm assuming what should happen if it ever successfully talks to the printer is that I'll somehow
get prompted for the printer's "email address" to verify I have the right to access it.
But, if that's the case, why does the config page on the printer ask for a predefined list of *my* email addresses?  Is that
for some other feature?  (E.g., ability to email a print job to the printer?)
    thanks!
    Stan
    [email protected]

    windrunner...
I think you're right, some soon-to-be-working-at-Oracle employee mis-designed the **bleep** thing to
shut off the Wi-Fi when a LAN cable gets plugged in.
This, of course, is completely contrary to the stated-on-the-box capabilities of the printer ("has wired and wireless
networking" ... doesn't say "wired OR wireless").
Sigh ... I'll submit a problem report, but I suspect nothing will happen.
In my environment, the Wi-Fi is in a DMZ, and the wired is in a trusted area.  My desktop needs the wired
connection to print, and my iPhone / iPad needs the wireless.  So, I currently have to unplug the wire whenever
I want to print from the iPhone/iPad, and plug it back in when I'm done.
I'd deduced eprint was implemented via email after a test.  We've used something similar for a few years
with our Konica Minolta BizHub.  It's a shame HP didn't work with Apple to support ePrint on the iPhone/iPad
in addition to airprint.   (ePrint's advantage over airprint is the same as for email vs. web "mail" pages ...
it removes the need for both devices to be alive and communicating at the same time.)
BTW, yes, the HP C410A does support Airprint.  After configuring our WiFi access point to allow devices to see each other,
my iPhone (iOS 4.2) was able to find the the C410 and print on it!  (It doesn't use the email-based ePrint.)
I hate to think what's going to happen to either of the internet methods (wired/wireless) if I plug in a USB cable
My position: the printer should work while simultaneously plugged into a wired network, a computer via a USB cable,
and connected to a WiFi access point.  (Naturally, if one of the three is talking to the printer, it would look busy to the
other two.)  This isn't rocket science here, after all

  • IPhone with VPN

Is there a way to set the mail app on the iphone to automatically use the VPN connection without having to manually turn on VPN everytime you need to check the mail?

Check with your school networking folks.
It's quite possible to substantially lock down a network at the firewall and at the switches used in larger networks, and to monitor what's not locked down for purposes of security, accountability and compliance.   (VPNs can be a means for circumventing established security, so it wouldn't surprise me to see those ports blocked from primary schools, and from various other security-conscious organizations.)
It's also possible that there's a misconfiguration within the network, and that's blocking access.  Multiple layers of NAT can play havoc with various VPN connections, for instance.  (IP networks can be large and complex, and errors happen.)
Ask.  That approach will also reduce the changes of getting in trouble with the school if the blocks are intentional, and can potentially also help the school networking folks sort out any unintentional network misconfigurations.  Why?  In general, intentionally circumventing network blocks can be viewed... dimly... by various organizations.  Sometimes just dimly, sometimes with administrative consequences, and sometimes with legal consequences.
But since you have LTE mode, you can use that, and avoid the school network entirely.
As for your question, the iOS clients provide L2TP, PPTP and Cisco support, and those protocols have fixed port assignments.  You'd likely need both a different client and a different VPN server, or command-line or port-forwarding connections with ssh on if-it-is-open TCP port 22 and related, but — if the port blocks are intentonal — that's just asking for administrative problems if (when?) the traffic gets noticed.
Ask.  If you ask nicely and if the blocks are intentional, they might even open a route for you.  If the blocks are not intentional, you can help test the configuration corrections.

  • IPhone using VPN: why asking credentials each time?

    Hello all,
I have a question related to the iPhone behavior.
Today I am using a laptop to connect to my company Cisco VPN. As my laptop is integrated into my company's domain, I don't need to enter my credentials when going to an internal website.
When using the iPhone, whatever internal site I access that requires authentication, it asks for my credentials.
Is there a way on phone or Cisco side to force authentication to happen according to VPN connection settings to avoid logging in each time ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Ben.

You can create a VPN profile using the iPhone Configuration Utility where you can hardcode all of the credentials. This enables you to simply activate the VPN and it will connect.

  • IPhone SSL VPN Support

So I'll be going to George Washington University in the fall and I was curious this morning and looked into what type of WLAN they deploy to their students and it looks like they run a SSL VPN. I was just at the campus a couple of weeks ago and got the network to work with my Macbook Pro but could not get it to work with my iPhone. Now that the new 2.0 software update is out I was wondering if Apple added support for SSL VPN networks. Does anyone know if they did or if there are any current solutions to making an iPhone to work with such a network?

Can anyone else shed some light on this?
The only official information available is what Apple has published on its web site and what is revealed in the video of the Announcement from yesterday.
Any developers who reveal anything more will be speaking against the terms of the Non-Disclosure Agreement they signed with Apple.

  • Why can't I establish a VPN connection using my iPhone 4's personal hotspot?

    Hello everybody,
I want to access our company's network with my Mac Book Pro using my iPhone 4's 3G connection, but unfortunately it simply won't work. Here is what I can do:
    - I can establish a VPN connection from my MacBook Pro using my home (or some other) WiFi and access the company network.
    - I can establish a VPN connection on my iPhone 4 using 3G and access the company network on my iPhone 4.
    - I can use my iPhone 4's personal hotspot (sharing its 3G connection) with my MacBook Pro and surf the Web.
    what I can't do is:
    - establish a VPN connection on my MacBook Pro when connected to the internet via the iPhone's personal hotspot. (connection times out)
    - access the company's network on my MacBook Pro using the personal hotspot, when the iPhone's VPN connection is ON.
The VPN is an encrypted PPTP connection, with username and password.
Is this a known issue, and, if so, is there any way to solve this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers
    Diego

  • Anyone get iPhone VPN to work?

I've been able to successfully configure the iPhone's VPN so that it connects to my corporate VPN, but it won't pass any network traffic. I've tried to use my corporate mail account, intranet web sites (both by fqdn hostname and ip address) and no tcp/ip traffic is passed.
I have the very same username/password PPTP+MSCHAPv2 based VPN connection on my iMac at home and it works just fine.
    Any ideas?

  • IPhone VPN client issues

    1. Even if you key in a password for the VPN client, putting the phone to sleep will cause the password to be cleared, requiring you to retype it the next time you start the client.
    2. the only place to type alphanumerics in for the password is on the VPN setup screen, if you just slide the VPN switch to On, you are presented with a numbers only dial pad
    3. The PPTP VPN client only recognizes maximum security, setting to either automatic or none will just hop back to maximum on save.
    4. The network stack doesn't allow you to easily set up special DNS servers for the VPN connection (the equivalent under OS X is to go into System Preferences, Network and select the VPN (PPTP) adapter and enter the DNS information there.
Since we use VPN to secure our wireless network, that means our iPhone users are unable to use WiFi at the office.
    iPhone Windows XP
    Dell Optiplex GX620 Windows 2000
    iPhone   Windows 2000

    Scott,
You're correct (mostly). I've experienced the same issues and have tried to work around them as follows:
    1) Use a numeric password for the VPN user account. Of course, you'll have to enter it each time (did they even test this?) but at least it works.
    4) Depending on your VPN device you should be able to set the DNS addresses via that. I'm using a Cisco ASA and set the DNS via the Group Policy for the DefaultRAGroup.
The bottom line? iPhone and VPN are not friends. Moreover, the iPhone has no EAP support wireless authentication. I'm a huge Apple fan but that is just stupid.

  • VPN setup Netgear DGND3700v2

    Hi,
I have a NetGear DGND 3700v2 adsl modem/router.  The firmware is v1.1.00.14_1.00.14  which has built in VPN functionality.
I am trying to establish a VPN connection to it from various MBP-15 (2011) running OSX 10.6.8 and 10.7.x - this is so that I can facilitate use of  AppleRemoteDesktop to access  various other iMac / old MacPros from outside the office.
In simple terms I have tried almost everything I can think of, including IPSecuritas & VPN tracker -  but don't seem to have found the right combinations.  I have also seen/copied the various postings for the FVS318G without success.
Does anyone have any experience with the Netgear VPN and Mac OSX settings?
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    ScinTilla

    Hi
With the current setup in place you can try either try configuring PPTP or MPPE on your router and establish the connectivity to access the remote lan.
