Iphone not being recognised as a device on my laptop

HI,
I currently have the iphone 4. I'm running the latest version of Itunes. I tried to connect my phone to update it and it comes up with an error as below:
this iphone cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started.
I have just got the new iphone 4s but again the same error has come up.
is there something that i need to enable on itunes/ on the phone so the phone is recognised?

My iPad2 is not being recognised as a device by my mac or my PC?

All programmes are up to date. The iPad pops up in itunes but nothing else. It's not recognised as a device in image capture either. Any ideas why?
The problem is I have a whole pile of photos that I want to get off the ipad that I can't access because it's not being recognised.
I could email them all to myself but this would take forever. Entirely the opposite of convenient, which I thought the iPad was supposed to be.
Photo stream only works so so, it's not sending all of my photos across, just ones it randomly selects. I really don't understand what that's about.
If anyone has any tips they would be greatly appreciated.
So far I have:
-updated iPhoto software
-updated iPad software
-reset iPad
-turned everything off and on again.
Nothing seems to work.

How did the photos get onto the iPad ? If they were synced from a computer then they won't appear in Image Capture (or iPhoto or Aperture, and on a PC windows camera wizard and windows explorer) - there are third-party apps such as Simple Transfer which you can use to copy those back via your wifi network (but photos are 'optimised' when synced to the iPad, so if you do copy them back they may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer).
If you have photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit or saved from emails/website then the iPad should appear in those applications so that you can then copy those photos off the iPad.

purchased iphone and for the first few days it was working brilliantly and managed to sync through iTunes.
however it is now not being recognised by itunes and won't charge it also won't allow me to put into restore mode using the home button and the power button. i've tried different usb cables different computers reinstalling iTunes and nothing (it does recognise my ipod just not the phone)
any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

make sure that you have the latest iTunes try again uninstalling it. Also rest your phone press sleep and home button until apple logo appears and let go I had same issue on my pc my mac works just fine, but it was software issue on pc.

Iphone not being recognised by itunes, but being recognised as camera.

I've updated everything, restarted my computer, restarted in services... it's being recognised as a camera folder, but not coming up in itunes. I need to download some apps using my computer, as my iphone has changed it's app store to China, but itunes has kept it as England, which means I cannot download apps without itunes.

I have the same issues. itunes 5.0.1.4 doesn't recognize my mini. ipod updater doesn't recognize my mini either. i have uninstalled itunes 5 and reinstalled 4.9, but it didn't work still. something in itunes 5 changed something in my system that reinstalling 4.9 doesn't fix it. updater just shows that i have no ipod connected. if i try to get updater to check for my ipod during the updater installatin, it just sits there and says "waiting for ipod". it's not my usb port because i can read and write to my ipod. i did the entire list of chores that apple suggests on the site including disabling all other functions and services, reinstalling the com port, uninstalling everything, reinstalling everything, getting windows install clean up, e v e r y t h i n g! nothing worked.
I then installed itunes 4.9 and updater 1.4 in my other laptop. i was able to update to firmware 1.4 using that computer. when i put the ipod into that computer w/ itunes 4.9, everything works fine. of course, it asks me if i want to link that laptop w/ my ipod. i said no, because i want to use my original laptop w/ the ipod.
anybody have a solution for this? it's like we all have the same symptoms and going to the same doctor and we end up having to diagnose ourselves. this is extremely annyoying and inefficient.

Help iphone not being recognised by pc

hi anyone who can help.been trying for 4 days to find an answer on internet as to y my iphone 3gs will no longer connect to my pc let alone show up in itunes .i know it cant be my phone as i tried it on another laptop .ive tried all the usual fixes that are listed .different cable ,all my usb ports,the misconfig support thing ,device manager not even showing up as a question mark ,nothing as if its not plugged in it worked last week ,no new software installed ,phone not jailbroken so what the **** do i do cheers if any one can help im tearing what little hair i have out x

IPhone not being recognised by iTunes

I recently plugged my iPhone into my laptop to sync and my iPhone has frozen and when I try and restore my phone, iTunes recognises the phone for about 2 seconds and then drops of before I can restore. My iPhone is completely frozen and wont work. Tried rebooting the computer, reinstalling iTunes... HELP!!!

same thing happened to me, my phone froze, I ended up having to take it to an apple store because it is in what you call "recovery mode...lost everything on my phone!! contact, music, applications....I still haven't gotten itunes installed correctly on my computer, so I'm crossing my fingers that my library is still there when I finally get it to work...

This seems to be a common problem but all the posts that say they have succeeded don't work on mine. My problem started when my iphone was not being recognised. I did everything re-installed itunes, restarted computer etc and I finally went into DFU mode. Itunes recognised then but said it needed to be restored. At wits end i did this, now i have no phone as itunes wiped everything but since it wont recognise it again i cant get the phone past the connect to itunes/emergency call screen. I also tried deleting the file "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig" but i cant seem to find it where they said it would be. If i can find this file apparently this will help me but it simply not there.
Really hope that someone might have an answer that will work for me because i really need my cell phone back

Hi, I have connected my iphone to my computer but it is not being recognised on itunes?can u help?

I just replaced my 3GS with an iPhone 4 yesterday, and the new phone will not sync with iTunes. It pops up with the following error message whenever I hook it up:
"The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.1 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
I just got this phone from AT&T, and there are no updates available for either my computer or my phone, so they have to have the newest iTunes.
Also, whenever I plug it in, the new phone does not appear under the "devices" tab on the left like my old one does.
Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can give me.

From your iCloud account, you can go to Find My Phone and remove the iPhone from your devices list which will release it, or you could do a remote erase of the iPhone from iCloud.
