IPhone not being recognized (almost) by iTunes

Hi.  I am trying to sync an iPhone (generation 2).  When I connect it to my computer (Mac) I see the phone under the device list, but the iphone sync/tabs [summary, apps, etc] that are usually shown in the main window when a device is connected are not there.  Instead, I see a generic grey "iPhone".  This phone has been synced with this computer previously and the back-up files are still there under Device Preferences.  The iPhone is being recognized by iPhoto, and the photos were successfully downloaded.
I also tried with my iPhone 3G, and that resulted is a successful sync, with all the expected tabs shown.  So... I am guessing it is the iPhone 2.  I also updated the itunes software a few days ago and I am thinking that the new version may not recognize the iOS 3.1.3 on the oler iPhone.  If this is the case, how do I update the OS if I can't sync via my Mac?
Any advice would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks

  • TS1567 iPhone not being recognized by Windows 8 or iTunes

My iPhone is not being recognized by my Windows 8 laptop, or itunes. I have used the original cable and a new one. Both cause the computer to ding when the phone connects, but i cant find the phone ANYWHERE. I have stopped and restarted the Apple Mobile Support Service. And restarted my laptop.

All needed drivers are installed when you install iTunes and QuickTime. Try to reinstall the Apple software again, as explained in this article:

Your computer detail provided indicates you have a Mac and the link you provided is for Windows - at least for the software conflicts portion the link went directly to, although some of the troubleshooting steps are similar.

  • TS1363 I have Windows 8 and an Ipod Nano 6th generation. It is not being recognized to the Itunes and I cannot download the music I just got onto the ipod. I have tried EVERYTHING in the troubleshooting. Can you help?

I need help. I have a Window's 8 computer and a 6th generation Ipod nano.  I have reinstalled Itunes multiple times and have read all the troubleshooting ideas to do it, but my ipod is still not being recognized.  This is not the first time I've plugged the Ipod in.  I need help

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • IPhone not being recognized by iTunes anymore

    Howdy,
Like the subject line says. It use to auto recognize so I can sync, though the last time I synced was back in Dec 2007. But now it doesn't even recognize the device at all. itunes won't list it on the left hand menu, so I can't sync.
Not sure if it's the latest update to iTunes 7.6.1.9 that caused it.
    Tried:
Swapping different USB ports. It only recognizes that there is a camera device attached.
Tried uninstalling the latest update and running an older version of iTunes I downloaded last Oct. But the old version won't start up because the library has already been updated to newer version.
Did a hard shutdown of my iPhone, and that doesn't work.
Tried charging iPhone to max and that didn't work.
    Basically, nothing is working.
Any ideas? Not sure if it's the device or my computer, and I can't seem to find any way to reach customer support on this website... it's like a maze.
I'm using Windows XP. I'm about to pull my hair out!

    Hello
Posted below is some troubleshooting that may possibly assist you today. Please be aware I am also posting what may have been done already. You can skip past this if needed. Simply posting it for others as well. If you have any other questions feel free to post back.
    1. Go to Add/Remove Programs, Located in the control panel. And check and see if "Apple Mobile Device Support" is listed. It is usually located right above "Apple Software Update"
If it is not there. Then this is the reason iPhone stopped showing up. Please follow the next step below to possibly resolve this.
1 A - Uninstall the following programs in the following order if possible. Then reinstall iTunes 7.1.6.9 for Windows
    * Remove Apple Mobile Device Support
    * Remove Apple Software Update
    * Remove Bonjour
    * Remove any iPod Updater Programs
    * Remove Quicktime
    * Remove iTunes
-Reboot the computer, Then download and install iTunes 7.1.6.9
Once you have installed, Connect the iPhone, Wait and see if it shows up in iTunes. If it does not proceed below.
    2. Go to Start- Run- type services.msc and press ok. The services window will launch.
Do you see Apple Mobile Device in the list? If so the Status should be started. If it is anything else please post back what it is.
You can usually right click on Apple Mobile Device, And tell it to start service if it was some how stopped. Once you start it and it stays started, Reconnect iPhone and see what happens.
If for some reason the service auto stops, This is sometimes caused by Security Software. Please disable or uninstall this software for testing, And see if it allows the service to be started.
If for some reason Apple Mobile Device says it is disabled. Then do the following
2 A - Right click on Apple Mobile Device, Select Properties, Look for Startup Type, Switch it to Automatic, and Apply settings, Then Start the service and press ok, Now test iPhone
    3. Please test all USB Ports and see if any of them resolve iPhone not showing in iTunes, Also if possible connect iPhone to another PC to ensure it is not the iPhone itself. This will isolate it to something on the PC or iPhone
If possible disconnect any un-needed USB Devices.
If needed follow this article as well

  • A Solution for freeze at Connect to iTunes & iPhone not being recognized:-)

Had a nightmare last night whilst updating my 3GS to IOS 4 on a vista PC, really thought I'd broken my phone, which refused to talk to iTunes or reboot. It just constantly displayed a USB plug with Connect to iTunes, Here's how I finally resolved it.
    DFU MODE:
    Step-by-Step
    1. Turn the iPhone ON
    2. CONNECT it to the computer with a DIRECT USB connection.
    3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
    4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds.
    5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button.
    6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, 60 seconds or so.
The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER.
It may take a few attempts to do the steps just right but it worked for me.
Failing that completely and I mean completely remove itunes and re-install then carry out the above. Details on how to completely remove iTunes here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Took a while but all's well now

P.S I didn't lose any iPhone content but had to restore my phone then update from iTunes which even after you have completely uninstalled and reinstalled it should find all your music etc again.

Have you attempted to connect iPhone to other USB Ports on your Mac?
Make sure you are not connecting the iPhone via a USB Hub, Mac keyboard, or using a USB extension cable.

  • IPhone not being recognized by iTunes, after 10.5 upgrade

I finally (!!) upgraded to Leopard and am now at 10.5.5. All has gone smoothly, with one exception. When I connect my iPhone via the provided USB cable, iTunes doesn't recognize it. iPhoto does, and the iPhone does charge while connected to the USB cable. I've tried both USB ports on my MBP, as well as the older style iPod cable and the newer generation iPhone cable. Also, my iPod DOES connect and is recognized by iTunes.
    Help!

Any major jump requires purchase of the different version. Your cheapest alternative right now would be to get the Snow Leopard upgrade disc for $29. You do not need Leopard as an intermediate step. Just make sure your computer and your software are ready for it:
[Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs> - [note by +K Shaffer+|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12924036#12924036] : "Some early Intel-based Macs can't use Snow Leopard 10.6 installers;of those, the Core Duo (not 2 duo) were suspect and had issues." - and a [qualifier by +a brody+|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13028822#13028822]: "I think that refers to the ones without at least 1 GB of RAM."
    A Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Application Compatibility List - [http://snowleopard.wikidot.com>
Another approach is to decide why you are upgrading. If there isn't some new feature you absolutely must have the cheapest alternative is simply to use the highest iTunes version for Tiger. iTunes 9.2.1 [http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056]
If it were me, I'd get Snow Leopard. Usually OS updates are $130 but for details not worth going into at this stage, you can use this opportunity to do an update much cheaper.

  • Iphone not being recognized by Itunes so I cannot fix the songs with the red circles with squares in the middle

I have an Iphone 4s and i have two reocurring problems. So my first problem was after I had synced all my music most of the new songs and some old that never had a problem before had a red circle with a red square inside of it. I've gotten rid of it before but I dont even know how. I've read countless discussions and tried so many things that I dont even know what works. i figured it just fixed in time but there has to be an easier way that isnt so frustrating and annoying. So now my iphone isnt even being recognized. the apple mobile device is installed and running and has been stopped, started and restarted plenty of time. ive reset and restarted, reinstalled everything. my phone is charging, it just isnt being recognized by itunes or my pc. also in the device manager it isnt showing up. I am getting very close to smashing my iphone and switching to an android. everything is up to date and i also have tried to sync music on the first ipod touch that came out and even that isnt being recognized. I just want to get rid of the **** red circles and connect my iphone so i can sync it a million times in hopes that the red circles will just disappear. does anyone know why these red circles appear? Apple needs to get their stuff together and give us actual directions on how to fix this!!!! thank you for your help!!!

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
    Go to 'Settings'
    'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync!

  • Iphone not being recognized in i-tunes.

I plug my i-phone whith i-tunes running. Usually no problem and being recognized and synced. Over the past week, i-phone not recognized when I plug it in. what's happening ?
    help

Same problem here, but Windows isnt even recognising the iphone. The iphone seems to be working perfectly and still charges when plugged in. I've reset it a few times in case that worked but no joy.
I updated itunes to v9.1.1.12 last night, but I don't think that is related as the iphone is also not appearing when plugged into my work laptop. Seems to suggest the problem's with the iphone.
Is this happening to anyone else, before or after ths update??

  • IPod Touch 2nd generation not being recognized / charging through iTunes

I am having issues with my 2nd gen iPod Touch being recognized in iTunes or Windows.  I have tried multiple computers with no luck (Windows XP and 7).
Here is what is going on.
iPod is not recognized through computer or iTunes
iPod doesn't charge through computer or a wall charger, however, will charge through a seperate speaker dock. (this seems odd that it will charge on a dock, but not through the wall charger or computer).
Each time the iPod is plugged into the computer with Windows XP, I get a message that the USB device is not recognized.  I get no message when plugged into Windows 7.
Here are the steps I tried to fix the issue.
used multiple cables, 3 in all.  My iPhone 3gs works fine and is recognzied with all cables / computers.
reset the device numerous times and re-started computers.
Uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled with no luck.
I'm reaching out into the community to see if anyone has had similiar issues and looking for advice to solving this problem.
Thanks for your help and responses.

Slightly different contact configuratio in the dock might allow charging nly on the dock.
If you can't straight out the contacts:
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours. However, it may not be worth it for the old 2G iPod.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following is less. Google for more.
    http://www.iresq.com/ipod-repair/ipod-touch-2.html
but may not be worth it for a 2G
But may not be worth the $69 plus shipping for the old 2G iPod

  • Definitive thread for iphone not being recognized in itunes in PCs

I have the problem many have mentioned that the iphone is not recognized by itunes at all.
I have tried completely uninstalling iTunes, quicktime, anything apple, and deleting the folders.
I have tried messing with the plugs, different USB ports.
I have seen the apple support page on this issue and tried everything, I have also seen the page about ipods having this problem which advised turning off power management on USB ports.
    I have tried it all.
I know my phone and cables are probably fine because everything works perfectly on my desktop, which is configured the same as the problem computer (an HP laptop running XP Pro with all current updates except IE 7).
Please don't tell me to buy a mac, I didn't buy the iphone just to be forced into converting overnight to the apple religion.
I have read every thread about this issue and it seems everyone has solved their problem except me so I had to start a thread.
I haven't had the time to sit for Apple support on the phone yet but I will do that this weekend hopefully, can't imagine what the fix can be but I will report back here if I get it.
Any helpful suggestions are greatly appreciated.
My laptop is just 2 years old and it does have USB 2.0.

When you plug it in, Windows should at least recognize it as the iPhone camera and ask what program you want to run. It displays a list, none of which are iTunes. Does this happen when you plug it in? At least that would eliminate the question of the cables and whether or not the computer itself sees it.
Now as to iTunes, it should be open when you connect. I know that helps to get it recognized. Also, the same issue I recall having was that I had not upgraded iTunes to 7.3.0 and it would not recognize it without that version.
Isn't there also something about Authorizing/Deauthorizing something under the Advanced section of iTunes? I've never understood this, but it must do something.

  • Iphone not being recognized by Itunes for Windows. 0xE8000001 Error

I am trying to upload some music on to my new IPhone, every time i connect my iphone, itunes does not recognize it. I have the latest version of ITunes 7.5.0.2. I reinstalled itunes several times, restarted Apple Mobile Device Service serveral times but still no luck. Please Advise.

I had the same exact error. I am from the US and don't have any jailbreak crudy on my phone.
I fixed the problem by resetting and erasing the phone; shutting down the Mac; Resetting NVRAM (boot->CMD-O-F, 'reset-nvram', 'shut-down'); Resetting PRAM (boot->CMD-P-R, hold until it starts booting); load up iTunes; restore iPhone backup.
Do you have to go through all these steps? I don't know. But this worked for me.

  • Iphone not being recognized by Itunes for MAC; But works in Windows Vista

    Hi,
My iphone sync with Windows without problems.
But when I plug my iPhone in MAC (10.5.5) with Itunes (8.0.2) the iTunes return: itunes could not connect to the iphone 0xE8000001
It is strange because iPhone connect with iPhoto without problems.
Just iTunes for mac dont work.
This is a brand new minimac.
    Any tips?
    Rogerio

    RogerioNT,
Which USB port are you connecting it to?
iPhoto will transfer over a USB 1.1 connection, and many hubs are USB 1.1. Try connecting the iPhone directly to the back of the computer.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.
