IPhone not launching iTunes automatically

How do I get my iPhone 3G running version 2.1 to automatically launch iTunes 8? The only thing that launches automatically when I plug my iPhone in is iPhoto, and that's when I take a photo with my iPhone (which is ok). I'm running OS X 10.5.5. Thanks!

I just noticed this peculiar behavior on my system too, but this might help you.
Go ahead and launch iTunes, plug in your iPhone. You'll then notice that on the left side, under Devices, your iPhone should appear there. Click on it, and you'll see the Summary tab, and within that the sections for iPhone (which lists your iphone info), Version, and Options. Within the Options section, you should see 3 checkboxes: "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected", "Sync only checked songs and videos", and "Manually manage music and videos".
Here's the strange behavior I noticed on my computer. Prior to iTunes 8, if I had the "Automatically sync ..." checkbox UNCHECKED, then iTunes will launch, but will NOT sync automatically.
However, now with iTunes 8, if I have that "Automatically sync ..." checkbox UNCHECKED, then iTunes will not launch at all, and of course iPhone won't sync. I would have to manually launch iTunes, click on the "Sync" button in order for it to do so.
I then CHECKED the "Automatically sync ..." checkbox, and viola! upon plugging my iPhone in, iTunes automatically opened, and started syncing.
So it seems that if you want iTunes to launch AND sync automatically, you'll need to check the "Automatically sync ..." option box, and be prepared for iTunes to launch and sync automatically.
If you don't have that option checked, then it won't launch or sync at all.
Strange eh? Hope it helped though.

  • Iphone will not launch itunes

I have given my father my old iphone3, he has connected the phone to his computer, but all that happens is that some photographs from the phone are transferred to his screen. Itunes does not launch. He has not had an account with itunes before. What should he do?

When there are photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll, the iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected to a computer.
He needs to get an iTunes account with iTunes. If iTunes does not launch automatically, manually launch iTunes no different from launching any other application on your computer if not already launched.
Under the Summary tab for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, select open iTunes when this iPhone is connected.

  • How do not launch iTunes when I connect iPhone

How not to start the iTunes when I connect the iPhone?

In iTunes Preferences-> Devices check "prevent iTunes from syncing....automatically".
In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove iTunes helper from the list with the minus sign underneath.

  • IPhone keeps launching iTunes

Original iPhone (2.2.1), USB cable to MBPro. Every two or three minutes the phone automatically launches iTunes. Auto sync is disabled, and I have tried with two different USB cables. Very annoying to have iTunes popping up every few minutes. Anyone know how to stop this.

Unfortunately, that did not work. Sometimes I leave the iPhone hooked up to the MBP just to keep it charged and to sync as needed when I am working my calendar, address book, pod subscriptions, etc. So this is not an issue of when I connect, but as I am working, suddenly for no apparent reason (like right now) I hear the phone bleep and up pops iTunes. Almost seems like a short of some kind except that, as I said, I have used two different USB cables and the same thing happens. It does NOT happen, however, with my iPod... just the iPhone.

  • AMD driver not starting (code 10) - iPhone not recognised iTunes

    Hi,
I am having a real issue with trying to get my iPhone recognised on iTunes. I have read through and tried every solution I can find and none have resolved my issue. Here are a list of solutions I've tried:
    1. Restart services, Reinstall itunes, Empty temp directory, disable security, delete incorrect registry keys - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US
    2. Restarted ADM - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
    3. Reinstall Apple Mobile Device driver - http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
After doing all these things, I think I boiled the issue down to the fact the driver is not digitally signed by Windows 7 (64-bit) - http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12702147&tstart=0
So I tried using the ReadyDriver plus software to get around the signature which sorted that out, however now when I try and reinstall the driver I get the following error:
    "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
After looking at other threads on how to fix this I cannot see a solution. Can anybody help me out? It would be massively appreciate if so, I've spent 2 days with this and this is my last hope!

I don't know about the code 10 error, but I was not able to get my iPhone to sync because I could not get the AMDS to download/install. According to Apple, it should download and install with the program you are downloading (in my case, iTunes), but it rolled back during the install. The reason AMDS was not installing on my machine was because even after uninstalling all Apple programs *in the appropriate order* (iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support [not applicable, since it never installed], Bonjour, and then Apple Application Support) and then emptying the recycle bin and then restarting, there were still Apple components on my machine. So, AFTER doing the above removal of programs, I also did the following:
    1. Backed up the iTunes folder containing my music, ringtones, etc. on an external drive (in my case this was the main iTunes folder in the My Music folder).
    2. Deleted this iTunes folder.
    3. Deleted any Apple/iTunes folders found in MyComputer > C: > Program Files and Program Files (x86).
    4. Deleted any Apple/iTunes folders found in MyComputer > C: > Program Files > Common Files and Program Files (x86) > Common Files.
    5. Emptied the recycle bin and restarted the computer.
    6. Temporarily turned off my firewall and antivirus, went to Apple online, and downloaded and reinstalled the Apple components (in my case, reinstalling iTunes was all I needed to do).
    7. Let iTunes start after the install, but then exited iTunes, removed the folder I backed up previously, and replaced it with the folder I backed up.
    8. Restarted iTunes.
It's possible that the problem I experienced was only with the residual files in the Program Files folder (versus those in the Program Files (x86) folder or due to the firewall and antivirus), but like you I had spent a lot of time on this and so I wasn't taking any chances.
Note: You sound tech savvy, but just in case...If you cannot see the folders containing the files you need to delete, go to My Computer, then to the Tools menu, then Folder Options (or in Windows 7 go to the Control Panel and search for Folder Options) and then make sure the “Show hidden files and folders” is selected and make sure “Hide extensions for known filetypes” and “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)” are both un-selected (unchecked).

  • Ipad does not open iTunes automatically

I have a new iPad 3. Connecting to MBP running Lion. All latest software.
On connecting the iPad it would open iPhoto automatically rather than iTunes. I sorted that out following advice on changing preferences (in iTunes & Iphoto) found here & now it does not open iPhoto automatically. However despite having 'Open iTunes when this iPad is connected' checked in Itunes/devices/preferences iTunes still doesn't open automatically when I connect the iPad to the laptop with a cable.
If I then manually open iTunes, the iPad is recognised & syching begins automatically.
How do I get iTunes to open automatically when I connect my iPad?
    Thanks
    Ian

This is a common problem. Using a different USB port may resolve the issue.

  • IPhone does not launch itunes

Since I updated to Lion iTunes does not start (launch) automatically when i connect my iPhone.
I have ticked in the box.
    I have reinstalled iTunes.
    I have Mac OS X 10.7.2
    I have iTune 10.5.2
    Any ideas?

I am now on Lion and iTunes 10.5.  There is nothing in iTune Preferneces that indicates iTune to launch when the iPhone is connected.  And since my ICloud does not push anything aywhere, I'm wondering what can I do?

  • I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though, itunes automatically putting books on my idevices

I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though I did not want this. I added them to itunes using add to library and I have both devices set to sync only selected books.
How do I do this in the future so this doesnt happen? Its a lot of work to now manually erase them from each device and it sent my phone over capacity.
    thanks

I dont see the difference in the posts. I dont think theres anything inaccurate or misleading about what I wrote. The items were immediately added to my ipad and my iphone, even though I have them both set to sync only select items. As soon as I added new titles to my itunes library, they were immediately added to the devices. Not on the next sync. Immediately. Both devices were plugged into the computer at the time. Sorry if I failed to mention they were plugged in but I dont see the signifigance youre making out of it. The problem persists anyway.
Now that I did a test without the devices plugged in, the new items were still added as soon as I plugged my devices into the computer ( I do not have them set to sync over wifi).
Since I have both devices set to manually select items to sync, of course I want to manually select new items to sync. For instance, I am not going to read any of these magazines or books on my phone, ever, and I dont want to waste valuable space with them.
    So I'm trying your advice:
I just tried deselecting sync books. It erased all content from ibooks on my device. I then dragged
one title onto the device, and it just goes back to syncing select books, with the one title selected.
It appears that wont work to solve my issue. The next time I add something to itunes it will be put on my phone. Is this really something most people want? To select to manualy control what content is synced, but then have things automatically added. It seems inconsistent to me.

  • Still could not launch iTunes due to itunes library itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes

Before I posted, I already tried the method from the posts below, btw my system is Windows 7
The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of iTunes
Re: The file “iTunes library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
    Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash
Even I uninstalled iTunes 11 and installed iTunes 10.7, still shows due to itunes library itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.
It bothered me for whole week, I could not update my iPod, neither my iPhone and iPad, please help.

Hold down shift as you start iTunes and keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click create. Make a new library at the root of a drive called iTunes Test, e.g. C:\iTunes Test or D:\iTunes Test. This should establish that iTunes itself is working. Where is your active library supposed to be?
For general advice if iTunes itself has a problem see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies. You should normally install the current version of iTunes.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • IPhone not in iTunes after Re-install of Tiger

I had to dump Leopard because it was causing all kinds of problems on my Mac Pro. I'm starting all over with a new install of Tiger 10.4.10. You cannot believe how angry I am at Apple over this force to backtrack to Tiger.
BTAIM, I'm now re-registering all of my applications and assumed my iPhone would be recognized by iTunes when I plugged it in to the dock. Its not, naturally, so now how do I get it to show up so I can add music, movies, etc.
Again, you cannot believe how angry I am with Apple over the poor quality of Leopard.

Actually I had to reinstall iTunes and the iPhone is now recognized. I've lost everything associated with it - music, videos, contacts, notes, etc., but I didn't have to reactivate it. Account user information is probably held on the AT&T server but my iPhone personal information (pix, contacts) are still on the iPhone but I dare not turn on the syncing of individual tabs until I can get that information off the iPhone and back into iTunes.
Since the reinstall of Tiger I've had no problems with the OS at all. The upgrade to Leopard cost me an awful lot of valuable data - data I was unable to get off the main hard drive and save without the system freezing and having to start over each time. Everything from the Documents, pictures, movies, music folders were erased but the applications and their settings are all there. What aren't there are the registration codes and each time I run a third party applications I'm asked to insert those codes and register before the app can be used. Most I have in email (retained on the server) but many early or older registrations are lost and I'm forced to re-buy.
That's the price you pay for believing in Apple's ridiculous claims that their new OS is ready for prime time. I'll wait until it is 10.5.9 before I give it another try, if I do at all.

  • IPhone not in iTunes (after following all steps listed in Apple support)

My iPhone is not appearing in iTunes, even after I followed all the steps listed in the apple support assistant. I have Mac OS X 10.6.3, iTunes version 10.6.3, and an iPhone 4 (without the newest software update).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Okay, now I tried to complete #5 on that webpage you just posted, and have lost iTunes...
I followed the steps for Reinstall the Apple Mobile Service Device, but the reinstalled version is only for 10.6.8 and later. I have 10.6.3. How do I get iTunes back after I uninstalled it?

Wait ... after upgrading iTunes through Software Update and experiencing this Library not Loaded error, I directly downloaded iTunes 10.5 from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and installed it, and now iTunes again works just fine. Try reinstalling before messing with the other possible solution.

  • Brand new iPhone- won't connect, won't launch iTunes, can't do anything (??

Hi everyone. I hope someone can help. I just bought my iPhone today at Apple. I walked by AT&T and had an account set up. So, all was well, until I tried to plug it in. Two things have happened.
First, I can't use the phone. When I plug it in, it does not launch iTunes. I've read in other posts to give it 2 minutes and see if it will. I've also read to launch iTunes myself. I've tried both, and nothing. When I launch iTunes it does not show. It doesn't show on my desktop either, but not sure if it should, since it's new to me.
Specifically, the only thing that happens is, I hear a chirp or a tone and the screen lights up when I connect the USB cable. But all it reads is "Slide for emergency" which I did...I guess that's for an emergency call. An icon appears in the middle showing the usb cable and an arrow pointing to an iTunes icon. I've plugged it in, so not sure whey this is still showing. Also, at the very top it reads "no service" which I guess is due to it not being set up yet. And, there's a little "lock" symbol at the top. That's all I get. I've tried rebooting. Nothing. I've tried repairing permissions, then rebooting. Nothing. I cannot get this thing to connect.
Second, and please hear me out on this one. I've used macs for a while and am generally knowledgeable about them. Also, i've been on this iMac for about 5 months, hooked to the same internet connection. However, for whatever reason, after trying to plug the iPhone in, my internet and web applications have gone to complete crap on me. The WILL NOT connect at high speed...it's unbelievably slow. Insufferable even. Now, i've used this every day and have a really good idea of how it reacts. This is 100% out of the ordinary. As I sit here typing this, this page is STILL trying to complete loading. Something is clearly wrong here. Some pages won't load altogether. I've tried resetting my modem (disconnecting, unplugging). Performance was exactly the same. And, as mentioned, i repaired permissions. So, it's a little more than coincidental to me this happened immediately after running into troubles with my iphone connection. It's like the iphone somehow messed my computer up.
Sorry for the long post. I hope you can understand that I'm very frustrated. It appears that, not only can I not get my phone to work, but it seems i've messed my computer up in the process somehow. Any suggestions? Please. Thanks for your help.

    Hi all-
For anyone reading this, I've solved both problems, and figured i'd post in case it could help anyone else.
First, the iPhone issue. I figured it out by reading another post here. Basically, in the start up items of your "accounts" in system preferences, there's an item called iTunesHelper. I had that unchecked. I can't remember why...I guess b/c I believed I wasn't using it. Anyway, I had read that that could be a problem, so I checked it, rebooted, and low and behold....the iPhone connected and launched iTunes. I'm now up and running. Phew.
As for the internet sluggishness, I don't know what was causing it. But, I just booted from the Leopard dvd, ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions as well as verify disk. Everything checked out. Rebooted on Macintosh HD, and everything was fine. It's as if it never happened. Very weird. But it's fixed.
Hope that maybe helps someone in someway...if your iPhone's not launching iTunes, try checking the iTunesHelper app in your startup items. Worked for me.
