IPhone not recognized after Mac security update
I have a Mac iBook G4 running OSX 10.4.11, and an iPhone 3G running OS 3.0. Up to now they have worked fine together. The phone was charged on the iBook this morning. This afternoon I ran software update on the Mac which installed the latest security update (2009-05, I think). After that, the phone is not recognized when plugged in the USB port. It no longer charges, nor is it recognized by iTunes.
I have checked the following to be sure that the security update is the culprit:
The iPhone with the same cable works fine on another Mac (running 10.5).
Other devices (thumb drive, printer) work fine in the same USB ports.
Finally, I restarted the iBook from the original installation CD for OSX 10.4. When running with the original version, the iPhone is recognized correctly.
So, I am reporting a problem with the security update, and I need to know how to back it off, or how to get it fixed.
Thanks for any help.
NOTE: Software update also installed iTunes 9.0.1 along with updates to Quicktime and Safari. However, none of these apps even have to be running to show that the phone will not charge.
The problem was solved by resetting the System Management Unit, thanks to a helpful phone call with an Apple Expert. On the iBook this required unplugging, removing the battery, and holding the power button in for 15 seconds.
Earlier I tried zapping the PRAM, as someone suggested, but the phone was not recognized. But it turns out it did show up in the System Profiler.
I have no idea why this happened in the first place, right after the software update.

Blank discs not recognized after installing security update
Just installed the latest security update and now the computer will not recognize either blank CDs or DVDs. The first time I popped one into my external burner, I got the notice that I'd inserted a blank DVD and was asked if I'd like to open it in the finder (even though I had already set this as the default option). Then when I said yes, I got an error message that the disk could not be read. Ever since, I no longer get the notice, just the error message. Moreover, "drutil eject tray" will not eject the disk.
Same thing happens with the internal drive. Again, drutil did not work and I had to restart to eject the disk.
Disk Utility shows the disk but will not allow me to format it.
These disks were working fine until I installed the security update.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks.Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -

ITunes no longer syncs to iPhone or iPad after iOS security update
I did the iOS security update on my iPhone 5 and my iPad Air. Now, iTunes will not sync with either device - neither one. In both cases, I get the error message "iPhone5 (or iPad) can not be synced. An unknown error occured (1140)."
I then did the iTunes update that just came out - still the same problem.
The Mac is a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 7 running OSX 10.7.5. Everything worked fine before the iOS security update.
What is going on? What to do?Finally, I had time to do a on-line support session with the Apple Care help people (excellent). We went through and verified a lot of things. Finally, he had me run the disk utility and run "repair disk permissions". That resolved things and it works now.
Also related is that the iOS 7.1 update installed a lot of stuff on the iPhone - including iMovie, Numbers, Pages, Keynotes - stuff that I will use on the iPad but not on the iPhone. The result of automatically installing all these things on the iPhone was to but it way over the limit on memory. I deselected thos apps (and a few others) plus some movies and am now below the memory limit on the iPhone.
Things are now working well with both the iPhone and iPad - both syncing correctly. So, with that, I will close out this case. -
Screensaver lock not locking after latest security update
Hi,
I have a dual 1.8 G5 running 10.4.7.
After the last security update the security preference that allows the screensaver activation to lock the account no longer works. I also tried enabling the keychain access menu item and the "lock screen" function does not work either. Did the permissions repair shuffle.
I tried same on my test account and it works fine.
Where might I start digging to find the bad prefs file for this one?
On another forum a few other folks reported the same thing post-update, although some of them didn't realize it broke until they tried it.No luck... Moved the prefs out of the directory then set the "require password" option and it still does not work.
There's some binary junk in that pref file, but here's the output of all the ascii junk contained within it:
[gee5:~/Library/Preferences/ByHost] spork$ strings !$
strings com.apple.screensaver.000d9354763a.plist
bplist00
^askForPasswordZmodulePath

It does seem to be setting the pref...

Iphone not recognized after upgrading to itunes 8.2
Phone not recognized in itunes after the 8.2 update, is this a bug?
Ok, I've found a workaround on another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9658855).
According to that poster (he has an iPod Touch), Apple Tech Support told him to disconnect his computer from the Internet, and then try to connect his iPod Touch. This worked for him. I just tried it and it works reliably.
After reading the post I plugged out my Internet connection from my laptop, and then connect my iPhone. It was detected. I repeated this 4 more times and each time the device was detected and came up in my iTunes sidebar. I then restarted my machine and tried it again 5 times. It worked all 5 times. When I reconnected my machine to the Internet, the problem came back the very next time I plugged my phone in. -
Hard drive crashed after mac security update
My hard drive crashed right after downloading and installing the mac security and safari updates last night? Other than doing a complete re-install from my installation dvd and back-up, is there another way to fix this problem?
Nope. You may have to replace the drive that crashed if you cannot reformat it.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. When you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation, after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. Now you can begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to make your
installation current. -
Classis not starting after latest Security Update installed
On 8/24 Software Update informed me a new Security Update was available. I installed it and since then OS 9.2 will not start when I try to open an application that runs on that OS. The blue bar goes about 95% of the way across its allocated space and then just sits there and nothing happens. Was not a problem before the Security Update. How can I fix it? I still have several OS9 apps that I use a lot.
before and after using software update you should 'repair permissions'.
to do this goto: applications>utilities>disk utility>select your HD>repair disk permissions
try this now to see if it helps... -
Web Sharing not working after installing security update
I have been using Web Sharing without problems for several months, but now, after installing the latest security update, my browser cannot find my server at macbook.local.
The console error messages read:

10/15/08 11:35:17 AM
com.apple.launchd[1]
(org.apache.httpd644) Exited with exit code: 1
I have read a number of other posts (and searched a bit on Google), but nothing I found seems to address this particular console error message.
What should I do?This page fixed the problem. For me this is the part that I had to run:
Problem 2: Apache is 64 bit, entropy is 32 bit.
The only solution to this that I've seen is to force Apache to be 32 bit. For intel based machines:
Code:
sudo cp /usr/sbin/httpd /usr/sbin/httpd-fat
sudo lipo /usr/sbin/httpd -thin i386 -output /usr/sbin/httpd
that will strip everything except the 32 bit intel code from httpd (after making a backup), forcing it to be 32 bit. For PPC, the command will be similar.
This fix is a bit tacky, but shouldn't cause any problems.
After running this everything worked as normal. Thanks to everyone that helped. -
Ssh not working after recent security updates
ssh worked fine just 2 weeks ago.
in these last 2 weeks i did several updates, i am not sure which caused the problem.
Symptoms:
when i ssh to another machine and i get a "Segmentation Fault" error; when i scp the error message is "lost connection"
This issue was talked about as re-occurring regularly as
discussed on http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4532389#4532389
But the remedies or fixes suggested there did not change those errors.
On some other site, it was suggested to use 'ssh -1 '
which actually worked but i could not open X11 xterm window,
which usually worked with 'ssh -X' or recently 'ssh -Y' worked instead.
Question:
Hopefully, the security fixes should give back the basic
UNIX X11 functionality. The question is when ?
(I am curious how many people are experiencing the same problems, as this seems quite a serious problem...)

Mail not happy after latest security updates....
Starting yesterday (20th), Mail will boot, but crashes withing 5-6 seconds of checking the mail server(s). Up until yesterday, it was fine. If I boot Mail, and quickly take the mailboxes offline, it will remain open so I can navigate normally within Mail. As soon as I go online with all/any mailboxes, it only stays operational for 5-6 seconds before it crash/closes.
I see I'm not the only one here with this issue, but I did have success with taking the mailboxes offline as quickly as I could.
Any help would be great.

Mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)Same problem here. Since last night my 1.5Gz G4 PB on 10.3.9 and my 2.1 G5 imac on 10.4.8 are doing the same thing. Mail crashes after about 5 sec. while it begins to index messages.
I tried your suggestion, David and went offline which allowed me to navigate within the messages. Took junk filtering off. Went back online and poof Mail has crashed again!
I have repaired permissions, installed software updates and have now run ClamX to scan and quarantine suspected virus bearing messages, but Mail is still crashing. Very strange for both machines to be doing the same thing.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

IPhone not recognized after Leopard and iTunes 7.6 upgrade -- solution
I did the iTunes 7.6 upgrade and then the Leopard install this past weekend. Everything seemed to work fine until I tried to sync my phone... iTunes didn't recognize that it was there, although I had power, etc.
Briefly, the solution is to reinstall iTunes 7.6. It may well be that if you do Leopard and then 7.6 you're fine, but I ended up doing it the other way.
This link below is to the relevant thread on the iPhone forum:

ChrisThank you Jennifer. That was very helpful. I'm new to Apple MacOS. Not new to computing by any stretch however, having been a DE at Sun for 9 years, 2 years at Cisco and a couple of lesser known startups in Silly Valley. I hope their are more folks like you on these forums, and fewer like 'South Beach'. Thanks again for the iPhoto tip, that was very helpful. I did get the iPhone 'fixed' by re-installing the iTunes 7.6 pkg. You wouldn't happen to know how to turn off the boogus status icon in my launcher bar (top of screen) that complains about .Mac 'conflicts'? I don't have a .Mac account and don't want one. When I select 'review conflicts now' nothing happens, no dialogue, no new windows, nothing. This glyph appeared after I installed Leopard. I am less than impressed with this release from Cupertino.

Bridge will not open after Mac OSX update
Hi, I updated to Mac OSX 10.9.5 yesterday, and now Bridge CC will not open. What should I do?
I'm not familiar with Lr, not having used it since trying it and thoroughly hating it when I tried when it first came out, but… I'm not quite clear what you mean by "open in Bridge".
Bridge doesn't "open" anything, so I suspect you mean open in Adobe Camera Raw hosted by Bridge. Bridge is just a file browser, and as such it doesn't open, edit, manipulate or save anything; it just hands the file(s) to the appropriate application, whether that be Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or even something like MS Word.
Perhaps you need to re-establish the file association at the OS X level. What happens when you bypass Lr altogether and just double-click on a raw file in the Finder? -
I upgraded on my iMac, as suggested through new updates in my Mac apps store, several apps - including iPhoto. And now, my iPhoto, which worked 2 weeks ago will not open saying is not compatible with ProKit. I have uninstalled and reinstalled ProKit....to which every time I am told I have a higher version already in the system? I have used my Time Machine back up and with same result. I had purchased the new iPhoto through the App Store thinking it would help....and have reinstalled many times with no result.
This is the note I get:
Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'RunTimeThemeRefForBundleIdentifier() couldn't find AppThemeBits.car in bundle with identifier: com.apple.iLifeKit'
My Aperture is working, but no iPhoto. Please help. Also, I have reinstalled my Operating System with no results.
