IPhone not recognized by most computers

Hi,
My problem:
iPhone 4 32GB is not recognized at all by the computer. A popup shows up: Unknown Device.
Tried:
- replacing the dock connector
- completely restoring the device
- putting it in DFU mode
- PC ánd Mac
- different cables
- latest updates of iTunes
- Apple help guides
Extra info:
- I've found two computers (Windows) where the iPhone was flawlessly recognized (both before and after replacing that connector).
- It's not fake.
- Problem occured during 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.1 (don't know if it did when running 4.x, but I assume it did)
- iPhone worked perfectly for its previous owner (she used it in Holland), but when I bought it, the problem occured at my pc (I use it in Belgium).
- iPhone is completely simlock free and not jailbroken.
- other iPhones can connect with the same computers.
Could this be an iPhone-hardwareproblem? I'm really stuck here.
Thank you for your help!

The problem persists.
I plugged it into my sister's Macbook Pro, popped right up, so I figured I'd run a "restore" thinking it'd clean out the cobwebs. Turns out that was a terrible idea because now I not only have a phone that I can't put anything onto, but it's empty as well: No music, no videos, no photos, no contacts.
I completely uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it. Plugged the phone back in. Things were looking up because it "binged" for the first time in a while on my computer. Tried syncing some photos to it. Worked for about 30 seconds then this popped up:
Phone disappears from iTunes, though the phone itself still says "Sync in progress." Now it doesn't acknowledge a connection at all anymore.
I'm tempted to put the thing back in the box and try to return the whole shebang, even though I'm like a week past the return policy. Piece of Garbage.

iphone not recognized in windows or itunes

My iPhone 5 was not being recognized by two different computers, windows 7 and windows 8.1.  My wife's iphone 5 had no issues.  I followed all the advice on-line from re-installing iTunes, resetting my phone ( as new and backed up from cloud), device manager troubleshooting, re-install drivers, different cables, different ports.  Oddly enough in the fianl analysis my iPhone only gets recognized when the cable is insert in one way into the phone.  Flip the cable and it goes straight to "unknown device".  Doesn't matter which cable I use, it only works on one side.  My wife's works both ways.  I can't explain it, but there it is.  I put a dot with a permanent marker on the cable to identify which side goes up.

My iPhone 4S is not recognized by my computers.  I have a Macbook at home and at work, and neither computers recognize the iPhone when I connect it.  It doesn't even show up in Finder.  I've tried different USB ports and USB cables, as well as restarting both the computer and the iPhone.  Please advise.

does it pull up under your devices at all and just isnt being recognized by itunes or is it not being recognized by your computer at all?

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes any more

    iTunes 9.0.2 on a 2006 iMac 2GHz intel duo running OSX 10.5.8
    iPhone 3Gs 32 gig
    iPod (5th gen)
3 external hard drives, all the iTunes library stored on a Mybook 1 TB Firewire drive plugged into iMac direct, not via a Firewire hub.
I plugged my iPhone into the Mac this am, tried to sync the iPhone and got an error message saying that something was wrong with my iTunes.
    Mac then froze.
Finally got the Mac back up after five attempts (eventually, had to unplug everything, including the mains to the iMac, plug in just the power, keyboard and mouse, press and hold power switch for 5 secs then plug in each extra drive when the Mac came back up).
Found something seriously wrong with iTunes as it wouldn't open when clicked on (Force Quit reported app frozen).
Deleted iTunes using AppZap then downloaded iTunes from Apple website.
iTunes now back up on iMac but can't find any of the music files (even when I carefully repoint the iTunes to the correct location for the iTunes library by iTunes/Preferences/Advanced then Change iTunes Media Folder Location). Each entry in the iTunes library now has a black exclamation mark against it,
Also, iTunes doesn't see my iPhone when I plug it in.
Also, when I plug in my iPod, get the error message "The iPod is synced with anotehr iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    HELP!
By the way, I have TIME MACHINE running to a separate and dedicated HD. Can I not just "roll back" my iMac in the same way I could do with a PC, say selecting the iMac when it was last working fine (yesterday evening)??
Keeping fingers crossed and hoping for an answer....

Rather than create another "iPhone not recognized by iTunes" thread, I'll add to this one. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB.
After going through those steps you listed, my Windows XP installation always reverts back to the old Windows Apple iPhone drivers which only sees it as a camera. I've had it set to only pull from the iTunes drivers by specifying "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" in the Hardware Update Wizard. Windows still doesn't like the iTunes drivers stating "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware". This location is the same as you noted: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers" which contains:
    usbaapl.cat
    usbaapl.inf
    usbaapl.sys
    All dated 7/22/2008.
My current drivers for the iPhone in my setup are still the MS drivers, version 5.1.2600.0.
    usbscan.sys
    ptpusb.dll
    ptpusd.dll
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes after update

I recently downloaded & installed the latest update for iTunes and it actually removed iTunes and put and extra (& useless) shortcut for quicktime in my desktop. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled iTunes and quicktime with nor problem. I hooked up the iPhone and downlaoded the latest update for it as well and it crashed during the installation of it. I have since had to reboot on my roomates pc and it will not be come up in iTunes. My computer still recognizes it though. I have gone through all the steps in apples site and microsoft and have no clue what to do now. I use this thing all day every day and need the music and video capablities for "work" purposes. If anyone can help, thanks.

    Symptoms:
iPhone not recognized by iTunes on Windows computer, however an iPod will.
The iPhone CAMERA appears in windows My Computer - but nowhere else.
    Problem:
The Apple iPhone Driver has been replaced by a Microsoft Driver which enables the camera/storage, but did not allow it to connect with iTunes.
    SOLUTION:
From Device Manager, Select the iPhone (under imaging/Portable Devices) and then select "Update Driver", Don't direct it to automatically search for a driver, instead, manually point it to search in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - It should then "do it's thing" and install the correct apple driver - voila - iPhone is then recognized.

  • One iphone not recognized, but another is in Windows XP

I have a user that has an odd problem.
This person has 2 iPhones - a 4 and a 4s.  This week the 4 stopped being recognized by Windows XP on his laptop when he plugs it in.  It won't charge from that computer either.  However if you plug it into another computer it will see it fine (and charge it).  The 4s will recognize and charge fine on his computer.
    To recap:
4s - works fine - syncs and charges when connected to his laptop or any other computer.
4 - not seen by his computer, will not charge.  Plugged into a different computer, it works fine.
I'm kinda stumped on this one and I haven't seen a precident that matches this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I FIGURED IT OUT. THANK FREAKING GOD!
    This is what I did:
I went to control panel and unistalled iTunes completely, then I installed 10.6.3
http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes which you can find here
It came up with an error saying that my library had beed used with a more updated verision, basically had to upgrade. I installed iTunes 10.7
After it had installed and iTunes was running I hooked up both my iPhone and my flash drive, I have more than 1 usb port I figure most computers do now, and by the time and date in the bottom right corner a small icon came up showing that I had devices hooked up. It showed both my iPhone (but did not know what it was) and my flash drive. If you right click on the iPhone it has the option to Troubleshoot it. I did it and my iPhone 5 now FINALLY SYNCS!
    I'm sooo happy now.

  • IPod Touch and 5G not recognized by WinXP Computers

I am not very good at troubleshooting iPods and I thought this would be the best place to find some help. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
The problem: I have an iPod Touch and iPod 5G that are not recognized by a Windows Computer. I have tried several troubleshooting steps and I will just outline everything step by step. Neither of the iPods show up in device manager, and when I try the "Run Diagnostics" in iTunes it shows that no iPod is attached. I've made sure the iPod service is running and tried stopping and restarting that also- but the iPod never shows up under Device Manager.
    1. I have tried the 5R's several times. Each iPod has been reset 3 times and iTunes uninstalled and re-installed 3 times.
    2. I have tried a total of 3 Windows Computers all with the same problem.
    3. I did a factory restore on one of the computers just to troubleshoot an OS problem. The restore had no effect. It was a "destructive" restore meaning the disk was formatted- not just a repair.
    4. When each of the iPods are connected, the screen lights up and the charging indicator appears.
    6. I installed an add-on USB card in the computer I restored- but this made no difference.
    7. I have tried restarting the computer with the iPod attached.
    8. I am using the same USB cable for each iPod.
That is about all the detail I can think of. Typing this out makes me thing I need a new USB cable- but they are charging ok.
This problem has been going on for about 6-7 months but I finally have some time to try and get it fixed. It would be nice to have some new music on them.
    Thanks for any help!

There are two separate drivers that need to be loaded on your PC. The 5G uses the older driver, and troubleshooting for it can be found in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
The iPod touch/iPhone uses something called Apple Mobile Device Services to communicate with iTunes. This one is a bit different in that the touch/iPhone will not show up on the desktop as a device. For troubleshooting tips, see this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Good luck and write back if your problems continue.

  • Iphone not recognized by itunes/can't upgrade itunes/ don't want to upgrade software

After having my iphone 3g "fixed" in the apple store and connecting it to one of their brand new computers, my itunes no longer recognizes my iphone and says I need to upgrade to new Itunes which I can't do because I only have the Tiger version of software.  Is there anything I can do so my iphone can go back to normal without purchasing updated software?

I am having a similar problem. I am attempting to install the airport extreme card in my ibook g4. The computer is not recognizing the card and now it isn't recognizing the iphone. If I remove the airport card then itunes recognizes the iphone. I have the original phone with the 2.01 update. I'm stumped.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes, but listed in "My Computer"

    Hi,
I have exhaustively searched the other threads as well as Apple support. I am running Vista 32-bit. I just received a replacement phone and I have literally never had so much as a hiccup recognizing, syncing, etc. on my laptop which is the only computer I have ever used with an iPhone. When I plug in my new phone initially, a pop up appears stating that Device driver is being installed. It will then appear in "My Computer" as a camera, but does not appear in iTunes.
    I have un-installed and re-installed iTunes.
I have un-installed and re-installed the driver for iPhone. When I go to the device manager and attempt to install device driver manually, the message appears "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to intall it. The phone is recognized on my desktop computer and my iPod is recognized on my laptop. So I am assuming it must be something that is setup on my computer that I need to delete, modify, add, etc. Please someone help.

The IPhone will still be listed as a camera in My Computer but not recognized by ITunes. If I unplug the IPhone and plug it back in, ITunes will recognize it again but drop it after about a minute.

It sounds to me like it could be something to do with some power saving mode you have on your computer, such as screen saver or some other power saving mode. Do you have a laptop or desktop PC? as I am more inclined to think that a laptop might cause it if it were running on battery.
The power saving modes/screen saver etc should be in the Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options. In the power options box, have a look around in here and temporarily switch off the screen saver, and adjust the various power option values for the various parts of your computer, to the maximum length/or switch that option off so that it isnt used. After these adjustments, restart your computer and load iTunes up and see if the problem remains.
I never put my iPhone in airplane mode when syncing and I have never had your problem. But if my suggestion doesn't work, then it might be worth trying Piperox13 suggestion.

  • Old (Really Old) Apple Files /Disks Not Recognized by Current Computers

This has doubtless been asked before, but I could not find anything in the 6 pages of recent postings under "Older Apple Products."
How can I access old Applewriter and Clarisworks / Appleworks word processing documents and save in an updated format? I was able to retrieve most old documents by going back to OS 9 and use Appleworks 5, then use OS X and Appleworks 6.2.9 to save in newer format. However, some very old documents are on 3.5 disks that are not recognized by my current Apple computers, or my Windows XP laptop.

    Cloyd G wrote:

You appear to be talking about two separate issues—translating the files from an earlier version of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks to the AW 6 file format, and retrieving the old files from disks that cannot be read by your current machines.
You have solved the first issue—If you can access the files, you are able to open them with AW 5, Save them, then open the saved copies with AW 6.
For the second issue, you are going to need a Mac with a 3.5" drive that is capable of reading the disks on which the files are stored.
3.5" floppy disks came in three varieties. From oldest to newest, these were Single sided (400 KB. These had a single hole, near the top edge of the case, with a write protect slider used to prevent data from being written to the disk), Double sided (same, 800 KB, with two holes, one of which had the write protect slider) and High Density (double sided, 1.44 MB, identifiable by stylized "HD" molded into case). The early Macs came with a 400 KB drive. The last of the pre-iMac versions had HD drives. When the original iMacs(with no floppy drive) were introduced, some third parties offered external HD floppy drives that plugged into the new USB slot. Note that pre-iMac machines did not include USB.
Once you have a machine with a floppy drive that you can use to read the files, you can collect the files on that machine's hard drive. From there you can move the files to your current machine, open and save them with AW 6.
Moving the files from one machine to the other can be done via ethernet, email, or sneakernet A or B.
A: Burn the files to a CD. Copy from the Cd to your current machine.
B: Save the files to a Flash drive. Copy then to the new machine.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • IPhone not recognized by computer, but is charging just fine?

    Hello,
    I have synced my phone before with my iTunes just fine, but lately I've had issues. I plug my phone into my computer and it charges it just fine, but no trust notification or anything has shown up. No indication of it being noticed at all happens. Now before you answer, let me explain some things;
    1. I've tried three different cords, old one, and two new ones.
    2. It is no where to be found in device manager or anything of the sort.
    3. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of iTunes at least three times, to no avail.
    4. Restarted and updated everything multiple times as well.
    5. Tried two other computers, nothing.
I have iOS 8.1.2, and the newest iTunes (12.something.)
    Anyone have any ideas?

Well, this is the support document for an iPhone not being recognized with iTunes in Windows. iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
When you removed and reinstalled iTunes, did you do it by following the instructions in this support document? Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support
If you did not follow the instructions above, it can cause additional issues for you. With the phone connected, you say you do not see it in device manager, do you see it in Computer? Do you see any USB error in device manager?

  • Iphone not recognized by windows or itunes

Can anyone please help me figure out how to resolve this issue?  My iphone 4 is not recognized by my PC.  My OS is by Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.  I tried the various "device not recognized" troubleshooting to no avail.  I tunes is up to date.  I even turned off my security sw for a bit to see if there was a third party conflict...all to no avail.  There has got to be someone out there who has the smarts to show me how to fix this.  Please advise and many thanks in advance!

    Jason,
I understand why Apple doesn't cover the water damaged phones under the warranty, but do you know why they don't fix them if the customer is paying? Is it just because they want the people to buy another phone so they can make more money? I guess I just don't get it.
The cost to repair a device and all of its components is more than the cost of a new device.
Other than the article I linked above, this is the part of the warranty/legal forms that would apply:
