IPhone only makes alert noises when screen is lit up

For some reason my iPhone now only makes alert noises for new emails, texts, etc if the screen is lit up. If the screen is black, it doesn't make any noise so i never know i got an email or text. Is there a setting for this somewhere?

Go into Settings > Notification Center and tap each app to see if "Show on lock screen" is set to ON (green side showing)

You can check the general sound volume by putting the phone to sleep, hit the power button, then double tap the home button. The volume slider comes up, drag it all the way to the right.

Go to Settings>Notifications and turn alerts/sounds on for the app(s) in question. Not all apps have all options.

Syncing shouldn't trouch you photos unless you have photos in a Photo Library album. These would be photos that were synced to your phone from your computer. If you do have any, you'll need to use an app like PhotoSync to transfer them to your computer prior to syncing.
If you prefer to backup your camera roll photos prior to syncing, open iTunes and go to Preferences>Devices and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically". Then connect your phone to your computer and import them as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Then, to minimize data loss, follow the steps in this user tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141. To follow the steps, first open iTunes and go to View>Show Sidebar. Also, Transfer Purchases is now located in File>Devices.

It sounds like you are unable to see your iPod Touch screen, as it stays black but it makes the connection tone when you plug in the USB cable. Use these steps to resolve the issue with the iPod from the following article:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:

Ipod HD makes cracking noises when turning..

My HD makes cracking noises when I try to search a song, or photo..
I have him for 3 weeks now, and he didn't do it before. It just sounds like normal hard-drive sounds my old computer makes, but in my opinion it's not normal.

I'm also not sure what you want to accomplish by this. Until you hit the "call" button, the phone is not 'off hook' like a traditional landline would be. There is no such thing as a dial tone on any cell phone. The dial tone was simply a carrier signal from the central office that prepared that end to listen for the pulses (later tones) generated when you dialed.

Could be a poor ground. Try plugging the monitor directly into the wall (no power strip) and see what happens.

Only want alert noise for one person

Okay so I have alot of people I have to have on my friends list and they try to message me alot and yeah I dont care but the noise gets on my nerves so I have it turned off,but the thing is when I turn the noise off I cant hear when the one person I WANT to message me messages me so I end up not knowing they message.
Is there a way I can make it where it only makes a alert sound for the one person and not everyone else? I dont want to block notifications from the other people I just dont want to hear the alert noise from them but I still want to see skype glow orange meaning they messaged. just not the noise.
Is there a way I can do this? I remember I used to be able to do this on hotmail or atleast have a specific sound meaning its her.

Did you change the volume setting as well?
It should be something like this for the settings:
Out of Holster: Tone
Ring Tone: (choose one)
Volume: (set to anything other than mute)
Make sure to save the settings.
The "in holster" settings are for when the phone is inside the leather holster usually provided with the phone. The holster has a magnet that, when it is detected by the phone, powers down the screen and locks the keyboard to save battery life.
Do a battery pull once you are done:
1. Remove the battery while phone is turned on
2. Wait a few seconds before inserting it again
3. Allow the long boot up process to finish (takes a few minutes usually)

Battery not charging and makes weird noise when power cord plugged in

I have an issue that a few people have mentioned here, my PowerBook won't recognize when a power adapter is plugged in. I've bought two power adapters recently (that I probably DON'T need now) so I know it's not a bad adapter.
For a few months it has been switching back and forth between wall and battery power but usually only when I was really working the machine either video or photo editing but it has been getting worse.
The thing that is happening to me that I haven't seen mention is my computer makes a fast ticking noise when it is plugged in. Once I unplug it, it stops. And while it was off and plugged in the computer was making a weird whistling noise.
Is this a bad DC/sound card issue and does Apple still do these types of repairs at a Genius Bar or am I on my own?

I know exactly what you mean. My 17 inch PB has been quite "noisy" since I received it, but i wrote it off (I was too ecstatic that work bought me a PB). Just recently the sound has been getting louder. I'm starting to think the sound was actually electrical interference that was being picked up by the speakers. Actually today I was in a meeting (speakers still working) and the squeeling sound was getting louder (almost embarrasing loud considering I'm the apple diehard in a pc dominated office). I decided to reset my computer (not something I do often)It seemed to subside for a bit.
Well today, it looks as though my speakers have died on me. I'm not getting any sounds out of them. I'm not a newb when it comes to macs (been using macs since os9, about '99) so I've tried everything I can think of to get the speakers to come back. I believe I'm experiencing a hardware failure (reset many times, check all settings).
Hmph.....Pretty frustrating. No iTunes during work makes me sad. I'll have to check and see if my external sound still works tomorrow.
