IPhone Pages lost character styles in reimport

OK, this is really bad. I was editing a Pages document on the iPhone. A 200,000 word novel. Upon reimport, i have lost all my character styles. (paragraphs styles are still there). The text is still formatted, but has no associated style
This is a complete distaster. And an outrageous bug. How am i going to fix this. Manually go through and restyle ever instance? Is Apple going to fix this?

Don't you have a backup copy somewhere with the styles intact?
As for what Apple might fix, nobody can here can tell you, all you can do is ask:

  • Issue with right aligning of Character Styles in my TOC

    Hello all!
I'm working on my very first book project and I have been reading soooo many threads on here for the past hour, but i either just don't get it, or i didn't find what i needed still, so i already apologize in case this very question has been answered before ...
ok, so ... i am building my TOC and have set up the corresponding TOC styles to the paragraph styles used throughout the book.
what i want is for the page number to appear before the entry. so for the page number i have set up it's own TOC page number character style.
    NOW
the page number appears left aligned. I have checked the character styles palette and there i can't set a tab for the page number to appear right aligned ...
how do i get this page number to be right aligned? and THEN, how do i specify the distance between the page number and the entry? there is "tab character"mentioned on the TOC dialogue box to specify the distance between page number and entry, but then do i have to go in manually every time something changes? that can't be it? i have seen in the paragraphy styles palette there is a tab section ... tried to input the tabs so the number would appear right aligned and the distance to the entry, but nothing happened, then the number is stuck right on the entry once the TOC is generated ...
    does this make any sense?
will attach a screenshot to try to clarify the issue ...
hope you can help me out.
    thanks a lot in advance!
    cheers

Seriously, if we didn't enjoy this stuff we wouln't be here. It's not like we even get T-shirts. :-P
An awful lot of what I know and am able to pass on comes from having spent waaaaay to much time here reading about odd problems and trying to figure out ways to solve them. I'd never seen a requst like yours until the other day, but then up pops Joel with a similar story, and what do you know, this may not be such a strange thing to want at all. Hopefully your question, and the work we put into trying to find an answer, has not only helped you, but some other users who come along next week or next year.
Everybody starts someplace and at some point in time. There's no shame in being a beginner, and less in asking for help when you need it, especially after you put in the effort you did on your own to try to find a solution. It's also true that some folks are more design oriented and others more process oriented, and that's just the way it is. This forum has many, many, followers who are expert in different areas of InDesign (even the engineers who write the program are not experts in all the various parts) and are here to share what they know as volunteers. You are always welcome here, especially when the question is as intersting as this one.

  • Why do text variables using Running Header character style translate forced returns as a word space in the running head on the first page but close up the space on subsequent pages?

In an InDesign document that requires 3 different Chapter head paragraph styles (to cope with differrent length headings) I've set up the running heads on the master page with a text variable using the Running header (character style) option. The character style I've assigned to this is an empty character style that is applied to all 3 chapter head paragraph styles.
Some chapter heads require a forced line break, so that the line breaks are aethesically pleasing. On the first page the text variable translates this forced line break as a word space in the running head, but on subsequent pages it ignores the forced line break. This means that if you have a word space before the forced line break, on the first page you get a double word space and on subsequent pages the running head sets correctly with a single word space. But if you remove the word space before the forced line break in the chapter head text, the first running head sets correctly with forced line break interpreted as a single word space, but on subsequest pages the space is closed up.
This only seems to be a problem when the character style option is used for header text variables. If a paragraph style is used the forrced line break is interpreted as a a single word space in all instances, both on the foirst page and subsequent pages.
This would appear to be a bug in how text variables are applied when using the Running header (character style) option. I can't see any other reason why the text variable would beheave differently on the first page and on subsequent pages. There is only one master page, so it isn't a case of their being an error between a main master page and a chapter opener master page.
Does anyone have any solutionss, or know if this problem has been fixed in subsequent releases of InDesign (I'm using CS6 ID version 8.0)
    Thanks

  • Character styles in Pages 5

Can't find Character styles in Pages 5. After a couple of hours of work I am about ready to jump back to Microsoft Word, which annoys me beyond belief. At least Pages 09/11 had Character styles, AND hot keys for styles (even if they were limited to F-keys).
I use several different styles constantly through my documents, including character styles, and Pages 5 is letting me down BIG time.
OK, it's cool to have object styles - I can dig that.
    BUT WHY ELIMINATE CHARACTER STYLES?
    Sorry for shouting.
What a pity. Maybe the iWork software engineers don't actually work for Apple . . . yeah, that could be it. Or they don't actually USE the products they design.
I encourage everyone to make liberal use of Apple's feedback page, http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I posted this in another thread before I discovered this one:
I just upgraded to Pages 5.
I opened a document that I'd been working on in the previous version of Pages. It has several styles, incuding a bulleted list style called "main bullet".
I attempted to apply that style to a section of text, and while it did indent the text properly, it did not add bullets. (Also, in the Style panel a bullet does not appear next to the "main bullet" style as it does in Pages 4. This was my first clue that something was wrong.)
So I went back in the text to a bulleted list that uses the "main bullet" style. I selected the text, then went to the Style panel and chose "main bullet" > update style. This did not seem to help. The "main bullet" style still has no bullet next to it in the Style panel, and when I tried again to apply it to some text, the bullet doesn't appear.
I decided to try a different style, in this case "body". I went to a section that has the "main bullet" style, selected it, and applied "body". The indentation changed, but it did not remove the bullet as it was supposed to.
Is this a bug, or do styles work differently in Pages 5?
It appears that styles do not include formatting like bullets, which, if true, is a huge problem.
I was also upset to learn that once I've opened a document in Pages 5, I can no longer open it in Pages 4. So I'm essentially stuck with Pages 5 whether I like it or not.
    Is anyone else noticing this?

  • HT201269 I thought I had a problem after my iPhone suddenly lost an app, I restored from a back up and am now missing some apps. They appear on my I tunes page and say 'open' in the app store, but aren't on the phone. Help,

I was using my iPhone and 'lost' an app. I restored my phone from an earlier backup, but now can't see some of my apps. They are shown as being on the phone in both iTunes and the app store, but clearly aren't on the phone.
    Where have I gone wrong.

  • Character Styles lost when reopening a document

Having set Character Styles as usual (in this case with green type), when I reopened the same document all the type to which I had previously applied styles all reverted to black. When I checked the Character Styles list the green was as exactly as I had specified it, but it nevertheless displayed as black in the document.
    What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Monika. I think I went through all the steps mentioned in the post you suggested, including loading swatches first. The problem is that I'm working on a map with hundreds of names already positioned – I simply want to change the font and other attributes without having to retype all the names. This is fine until I close the document and reopen it when, annoyingly, most of the names (not all of them, oddly) display in black. Fortunately, each class of name (towns, rivers, etc) are on a different layer, so it's not altogether difficult to reapply styles – just annoying that I should need to do it at all.
From what I've read, this appears to be an ongoing problem. I'm using CC on a Mac, btw.

  • Placing Word File with Character Styles

    InDesign CS5, windows 7
I am hoping for some guidance.
I am creating a directory from an Excel file.  This is what I have done and where I am at.
    1. Edited Excel File to ad "Headers" for Name, Address, etc...
    2. Used Mail Merge in MS word to create a Directory.
         - Created Character Styles in word for different fields.
         - Did some minor editing to remove stray spaces, etc...
    3. Placed wrod file in InDesign.  Layout is created with basic text boxes that are split into 4 columns, each box linked to the next (I have about 30 pages of this).
At first, this was working OK, but the CHaracter styles were not coming through (Actually, they were lost during the merge in Word).  So, I did some work and found that there was a code I could add to the Merge Fields oin Word to force the Character styles to be retained.
Anyway, I did that.  However, now when I place the Word File in InDesign, it appears to hang at "Processing Character Styles".
I removed the code from the merge, figuring I could go back, but I still get that hang.
    Any suggestions are appreciated...

    Any suggestions are appreciated...
I think I followed most of your explanation. But, since we can't see what you're doing, it's hard to know 100% what your reasons are for doing what you do. F'rinstance, I wonder why you're bothering with the Word merge at all. Without knowing why you have to run the merge in Word, I'd suggest this:
add headers to your Excel file
    save out .csv
Use InDesign's Data Merge tool, skip Word entirely
Why do you need to use Word's Mail Merge? If you've never used Data Merge in ID, you should probably take a look at the Help file entry to see if it will work for you.

  • Table of Contents - Character style differentiation

After reading another post from the end of July regarding the same subject, I fear that there may be no solution, but I just want to confirm and ask for clarification.
It the table of contents of my PhD thesis there are a few titles that have individual words in small caps based on convention for the subject area I have worked on. As I understand, Pages 09 does not allow one to apply character styles to portions of text in the ToC. Am I right?
In the other post, the respondent wrote "The only way round this would be to export the TOC text and bring it back in as regular text without the links."
I don't understand what this means. Export the text to where? And what text? Just the word I need? And how does one "bring it back in as regular text? What does it mean without links?
I have to submit in 5 days, so I have to quickly figure out an alternative solution!
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes! TOC is as flexible in formatting as the text is in Pages.

Copy the whole TOC when you have finished you writing of the thesis. Paste the TOC in i.e. TextEdit and do the changes. Copy and paste the TOC back to Pages. It will have lost its link the text so any changes will not make any change in the TOC.

  • Why do character styles disappear after an upgrade to RH9? And more...

I am trying out version 3 of the technical communication suite and have developed a few concerns about RoboHelp 9. I'm wondering if anyone has feedback on the following:
After opening a version 7 project in RoboHelp 9, I noticed that all of my custom character styles are gone. They are not listed in the "style" pane (when the drop-down is set to either "Character Styles" or "Paragraph and Character Styles"), and the text itself does not look correct. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I checked the RH9 release notes, and the three known issues listed have nothing to do with character styles.
On a broader note, I read elsewhere in this forum that upgrading from RH version 7 to either 8 or 9 can be painful. Does anyone know whether Adobe (or anyone else) has a list of upgrade warnings, or a list of proposed solutions for making the upgrade process go more smoothly? I'm not seeing anything in the official Adobe documentation, though I could be missing it.
Also, if anyone has an opinion on whether the  FrameMaker-RoboHelp integration is better in version 3 of technical communications suite (compared with  version 1, which is I am), I would be interested in hearing your reactions. After a first pass, the only part of the version 3 suite I'm really impressed with is the new Acrobat.
    thanks,
    Abby

If you would like to create a new project and set up a topic with your CSS in it, I will take a look at it. How to send it is described on the Contact page on my site.
The most common issue with upgrading to 8 was lists. You can read about that on my site. Look under RoboHelp > Lists.
With 8 the big issue was a bug that will not affect you in 9. The project lost track of files.
I cannot help you on the FM integration and suggest you post a separate question on that aspect at http://forums.adobe.com/community/robohelp/robohelp_framemaker

  • Paragraph and Character styles in Fireworks

    Hi
i used fireworks for a while, when it was still macromedia product, glade to see all the improvments in CS5.
i used Photoshop to create a very specific prototyping (including all CSS properties) of my website, but when i come to prototype the rest of the pages i totaly lost control, than i realize Photoshop is not the right tool for prototyping a whole website.
fireworks shuld be the answer of my prays, as i could read in the articles, in CS5 you can set all properties for text and fireworks will export it as CSS file, than al you have to do is copy and paste code according to your CSS structure, that grate time saver.
but one thing is really betters me, you cant do really good prototyping if you dont have the ability to create a paragraph and character styles (as you would with InDesign)
can fireworks create styles in the level of Indesign? and if not, what is the right workflow between Fireworks and Indesign?
    Thanks
    S

Window > Find and Replace will enable you to change all the instances of a text color in the entire document.
You can create your own character styles by saving them in the Styles panel. To do this, click on an instance of a style you want to save, and then on the little down arrow at the top right of the Styles panel to open the New Style menu. Select which characteristics you want to save, then click the OK button to close the panel. To apply your custon style, select the object you want to apply it to, then click on your custom style.

  • Working with Character Styles in Photoshop CC

    Hi,
I upgraded to Photoshop CC and was quite excited about the Character Styles Panel. But now, I'm completely puzzled.
It almost looks like Adobe didn't finish the feature before shipping 14.1.2
    1. I can't reorder the character list? Why use a different list implementation than that for "Layer Comps?"
    2. I want to copy and paste a character style from one selection to another (Basically the workflow from Apple Keynote). It should be possible with character styles, but it just didn't work:
      - I select a formatted text section
       - I press "New Character Style icon"
       - I double-click the new style -> The font-size in the style differs from the font-size of the orginal selection?!
       - I'm pretty sure it has to do with style of the original text not being directly overwritten from "None", but there is no feature to "bake" style-formatting either.
    3. I can't remove and restyle the Character-Style "None". But when I accidently assign "None", it is defined as 12px Arial Black . So the default-style HAS a style definition and should therefore be editable like the other character styles.
I'm completely blow away how non-intuitive the whole process is. I never had problems to understand character styles in InDesign, Pages, Word and Illustrator. But in Photoshop is either completely broken or non-intuitive.
    Just my two cents.
    tom

Your sure your using photoshop cc on windows vista?
I was under the impression that photoshop cc would not even install on windows vista.
What version of camera raw do you have?
In photoshop under Help>About Plugin does it list Camera Raw and if so which version is it?
(click on the words Camera Raw to see the version)
Camera raw doesn't work if it's a camera raw file or some other file type such as jpeg or tif?
What camera are the camera raw files from?
Officially camera raw 8.3 is the latest version of camera raw that will work on windows vista.

  • Cross references not picking up character styles in source text

I'm getting some annoying odd behaviour with cross references in Frame 12.
I have some tables, where the paragraph style in the cell is called "Cell Body" (nothing odd there).
Quite a few of the cells only have one word in them, and that word is set to courier font with a character style (called "Code").
Then, elsewhere in the document, I am referring to this text using cross references. I am referencing the paragraph style Cell Body, and the cross reference format applied is like this "<hyperlink><$paratext><Default ¶ Font>"
"hyperlink" is another character style that makes the text go green.
So, the cross reference out to take the text from the cell (in Courier) and reproduce it, coloured green.
However for about half of these cross references, it isn't picking up the Code character style in the source text, so the cross ref is just green, no green courier.
Things are further bamboozled when I output to HTML Help.
In the CHM file, the cross refs which appear to work OK (green courier) are now just courier.
The ones which failed to pick up the courier look the same as they do in Frame (just green).
Any ideas as to what's going on?
I've tried troubleshooting by clearing the cells, reapplying the para style and default character style, then reapplying the code character style, then replacing the cross reference - which sometimes seemed to fix it but didn't always.

    Arnis Gubins wrote:
Using two character tags in-line together (a la <hyperlink><Code>) is asking for trouble. IIRC, FM doesn't re-apply these in order on an update and depending upon how they are defined (and what is set to AsIs), the outer one usually wins. .
So why does the blimmin' dialog invite me to do precisely that, by providing me with a list of all the character styles I have, and allowing me to select as many of them as I like??? /sulks/   Indeed, if Frame still shipped with a printed user guide instead of  stupid "optimised for viewing on iPhones" online webhelp nonsense, I suspect I might very well be able to find an example in the manual of using multiple character styles in that dialog!  If it doesn't want you to use more than one, why doesn't it grey out after you add the first one? /sighs/  The concept is called "cascading styles", it's a fundamental web paradigm! And it works in the main body text - why not in Xrefs!
Also, I have been very scrupulous to keep my character styles orthogonal so none of their AsIs's mash each other up.
But, rant over, I shall follow your splendid suggestion for a "Code Hyperlink" style.

...Depending on how badly designed and buggy this new Frame12 feature is, I should say!   The Publish module should not randomly stop behaving in a WYSIWIG manner in completely undocumented fashion just because Adobe couldn't be bothered to code it properly.  /sighs/
Frankly, for my current project, I've given up trying to jump through hoops for Publish - I'm concentrating on getting the Frame source right and assuming these quirks will be fixed in Frame 13 (or 14, depending on how superstitious they are). Because if I put in ad hoc workarounds for them in Frame 12, I (or a colleague) will only have to undo them later when they're fixed, and by then we'll all have forgotten what the original problem was.

  • IPhone isn't showing up in My Devices on "Find my iPhone" page

I recently lost my iPhone 4 at an airport (or on the plane). When I first got the phone, I installed the Find my Phone app connected through MobileMe, though I don't think it was installed at the time of losing it. Fast forward to now...
I've logged into Find my Phone (now hosted on icloud.com) and I can see my iPad listed under the "My Devices", but not my iPhone. The battery is now dead as I've called it, but shouldn't it still show up in the My Devices list on the Find my iPhone page?
I'm wondering, if my iPhone doesn't show up in My Devices on Find my iPhone, does that mean it has been wiped?

Thanks, Winston. I thought I'd done that, but as that sounds like a post-iOS5 update thing, I probably didn't. The funny thing is, I don't remember doing ANY of this for my iPad, yet, that device still shows up under My Devices on the Find page. Hmm...

  • Unable to reset some settings values in Character Style Options back to "inherited"

    Hi!
First, unfortunately Paragraph Styles and Character Styles are not so cool as in InDesign in Photoshop. I hope it will be updated in future versions because good typography is very actual now.
    Here is one of issues:
I can't set Font Family and Color in Character Style Options back to inherited ones, i.e. to reset/empty it. Onse I set some custom font/color for Character Style (manually or after "Redefine..") I can't remove it, only set new one. And since Character Style is another level of abstraction over Paragraph Style this behavior is very annoying - I always need to check what font is set up for characters, change it or even delete this character style and create a new one with same settings but default (empty) font family.
Fortunately some other settings (font size, leading and all other inputs/selects with editable value) can be reset (emptied) - that's why I consider situation with font family/color as buggy/raw.
What do you think about this? May be I don't know some secret tricks/technics to fix it?
    Thank you

I purchased the same laptop from Wal-mart in late August, I have had nothing but problems. Going from one program to another within the computer takes forever, the pages constantly say "not responding", getting on the internet takes all day, anti virus software has been installed, scans have been run which might I add took three days to do because the computer kept freezing and I  had to manually restart. Un-installing programs is next to impossible as every time I start and sit and wait 10 minutes later I am still waiting, try to get out of the program and it won't let me. I try ctrl alt del which doesn't help. I took mine back to Wal-mart a week over the amount of time they allow for returns which is ridiculously short and they would not take it back. I have spent numerous hours trying everything under the sun to get this 2 month old computer to work and to meet up to my expectations of a brand new laptop computer and I am almost ready to chunk it out the backdoor. I am very disappointed in this product and will never buy another Toshiba. My family owns a Dell laptop and 2 HP laptops and we love them. This laptop was purchased for my children to do schoolwork as they are homeschooled and unfortunately they have not been able to do ANY! Take my advice, DO NOT BUY this product!

  • URGENT: Paragraph/Character style help (doing massive amounts manually)

I'm using CS3 at work but if it's magically easier, i may have access to cs4 (less likely but possible). It's a long post but I wanted to be in  depth with my problem which at its core is simple. I have included a 2-page spread example in pdf.
What I greatly need help with is your opinion of how I can set this up to speed up the process, unify the document, and make future edits simple instead of crazy difficult. Can I configure a paragraph style to NOT replace font style? Can that style include my preset tabs (for bullets) which list as follows?:
number, small letter, roman numeral, bullet
Let me start by saying I SCOUR the net and all available options before posting.  I'm cleaning up/editing a production manual for a portrait company I work for and am new to indesign but have figured many things out. I'm quite proficient with the Adobe Suite and computers. I'm using last year's indesign file and it was done very poorly. The words are right, the lines are right, the tabs are terrible and i've needed to move many pages out of order and add plenty. I also chose to disable 1 text box that flows from page to page (i see now it's helpful but they had made it impossible for me to use the existing one and I didn't have time to redo). The pictures I can add and manipulate freely but an embedded text-wrapped version would be nice as well (less important by far).
The manual is spiral bound with text on the right page and a notes page on the left for the layout. (flipped open the left side is lines for notes and the right side is operations). It's set up with a Header at the top (in some cases a sub header almost identical right below it), a space or two, then an outline format IE:
    1)     Open job
              a) Go into G:\Location
              b) Select job code
                   i) *Note: Be sure to select the right one (etc)..
    2)      Continue
                                       |                                                    |
                                       |                                                    |
                                       |                    Picture                      |
                                       |                                                    |
                                       |______________________________|
Page size is 8.5x11 with a .5 safe print border all around (document is 11x17). The Document is about 100 pages of written directions (so double that for indesign pages). It will be printed on a Xerox IGen3.  The whole book give or take is set up like that. Thus, a few paragraph and character styles are in order. I've been editing/cleaning up each page re-tabbing, re-laying out. It's hell and must be done in 2 days.
I'm using Myriad Pro universally as the font.  The sizes are as follows:
    Header: 16 bold center
Sub (if applicable): 15 bold center
    Body: 12 point
I've gotten paragraph styles to work sort of. I tried setting up numbering and bulleting but it's been giving me so much grief that I typed those all by hand or have just adjusted existing ones (I don't have much time currently, BUT need to learn for future updates and to convert it to styles). I know styles are the way to go with a couple master pages involving bulleting and character styles... however I could not become an expert overnight unfortunately; i tried =)
The real killer for paragraph styles have been:
    - The portions of the directions that pertain to specific menu options or clicks are in bold, occasional important info is red. Normal text including numbers/bullets are normal. There are many words repeated that need bold so perhaps some kind of search/replace script could help however im not positive.
    - When I go to apply a paragraph style it must make all type bold or not bold. It doesn't replace the color of the text which is good.
    -  Having major trouble with bullets/numbers working the way i'd like.

It is unfortunate you only have two days, but you could play around with these suggestions below and see if they help more than they hender... (NOTE: SAVE A COPY OF THE DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU START MONKEYING AROUND IN CASE YOU HATE THE RESULTS!)
For starters, you could certainly do the lists via stylesheet. It would require 3 lists based on your sample. Base list 2 and 3 on list 1 or all 3 on a default List paragraph style, so that you can globally control your list formatting without having to change all 3 each time you want to apply a tweak.
List 1 would be leve 1, 1,2,3 style with indents like 3p, -1.5, 3p. Align right and don't restart numbers. If you want bold numbers, make a bold character style called List# and apply it.
List 2 would be level 2, a,b,c style with indents like 4p, -1p, 4p. Restart on level change.
List 3 would be level 3, i,ii,iii style with indents like 6.5p, -1.5p, 6.5p. Restart on level change.
Tweak as necessary to match your actual text.
Then just do a global GREP search and replace, replacing out the manual list numbers with real styles.
List 1 replace ^\t[0-9]+\t with ~- (discretionary hyphen is a nice invisible character that won't break anything) and paragraph style of list1.
List 2 replace ^\t\t[a-z].\t with ~- and paragraph style list2.
List 3 replace ^\t\t\t[ivx].\t with ~- and paragraph style list3.
The last step of list replacement would be to manually restart numbering for each new list.
As for the keywords, unless you have a complete list of what will be bold and it will always be bold, just manually style them with character styles.
Make a character style called "Keyword" and apply bold to the formatting.
Make a character style called "Keyword Important" and apply bold and red formatting.
If you know certain words are always, always the same and you have CS4, you could create a GREP style that applied Keyword character style to any words that matched.
For example, if the keywords Left, Right, Top, Bottom always were bolded at the beginning of the paragraph, you could add the GREP style that applied Keyword to ^(Top|Bottom|Left|Right).
In all likelihood you will be applying a lot of manual keywords too though, so make sure you put a keyboard shortcut on (like cmd-opt-1, 2, etc) on the Keyword and Keyword Important character styles. That way you can just fire through selecting text and whacking cmd-opt-1 where appropriate.
