IPhone Performance in Washington DC/Northern Virginia?

Thinking about making the switch from sprint Treo 700p to iphone. Anyone in DC/Mclean have experience with the performance of iphone here. Reception, EDGE speed, reliability, reception in a govt building downtown, etc. Thx!

I get pretty good reception in most areas. Be advised, though, AT&T doesn't work underground in the Metro. Sprint does (via roaming). Except for home, when I connect via WiFi I have used the EDGE network in various parts of the country (mostly urban but, also most wonderfully in Yosemite). It hasn't been that bad.

  • Broken sleep button - repair in northern virginia?

Yesterday morning I dropped my beloved iphone and the top button is jammed. It seemed to work ok but now gets stuck in fits of constant rebooting. Sometimes if I bang it around a little, I can get it to work for a while but it eventually craps back out.
I went to the Apple store in Tysons and the guy said it would cost $270 for a replacement. I know the 3G iphones are coming soon and I don't want to spend anything close to that amount to fix it.
    I have two questions:
    1. Is there any way I can work on the phone myself to get the button working again? At this point the phone is all but dead anyway so I don't mind a little risk.
    2. Is there any repair shop in the Tyson's corner or northern Virginia area that can repair an iphone with this problem for relatively cheap? I saw someone on another forum said its about $30 to fix it locally but I don't know where to begin.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Mike Shea

i am using iphone 4s ios6.1.2 ...my iphone has become too slow once i have updated from ios 5.1.1..can anyone help me to make my iphone perform batter

    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red  to delete apps from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

  • IPhone Performance Tuning Using Shark

Hi, I'm trying to do some performance tuning and am having some trouble using Shark.
*Problem #1*: No matter what configuration I choose ( debug, release, simulator, device ) the "Shark" menu item under "Run" in XCode is greyed out. How do I enable this feature so I can run my application using Shark through XCode?
*Problem #2*: I've been able to run Shark on it's own while my iPhone simulator is running and have tried to capture my application. However, for some reason my application name "TestApp" shows up multiple times in the drop down in Shark when selecting which process to monitor. They all have the "TestApp" and most of them have a number after it such as 94452. Any ideas on why this happens and which one is the process I should choose?
*Problem #3*: I've tried simply selecting one of the four or five "TestApp" processes from the Shark drop down and running it. It does capture information and gives me the results, however most of the symbols are missing even though my project has "Gererate Debug Symbols" check box checked in the project settings. Is there something else I need to do in order to get all symbols to show up?
My hope is that by fixing problem #1, it will automatically fix problems #2 and #3.
Any help would be great! Thanks!

where is the original version of the executable on the filesystem? i can't seem to find it.
Look in your project's folder. It's in the "build" folder, in another folder probably named "Debug-iphoneos". When you choose the right file, (the executable, not the ".dSYM" file), the bottom of the file panel will fill out in black with information. If you choose the wrong one (like the simulator executable), the information in the file open panel will be red and you'll get an error message.

  • Light Leak Defect in Northern Virginia Phones

There has been much discussion of the "light leak" issue on these boards. On the left side of the phone, between the bezel and the black o-ring, light from the screen escapes -- and dust and moisture can get inside.
In the past two weeks, I've had 5 phones, from 3 different Northern Virgina Apple stores, all with this problem. Most recently, a Specialist opened 3 brand new boxes for me, all having the light leak defect.
I was told that the light leak was "within the acceptable tech specs", and told they couldn't open up more than three new phones for me in one visit -- was told I'd have to go back to another store, and probably would have to settle for a refurbished "warranty" phone.
So, first a warning to those condidering purchasing a new iPhone -- look out for this problem before you leave the store.
Second, a question for the forum: What are the practical harms of this defect? Can dust and moisture get inside and damage the phone?

    Hi Arturo Bandini,
I too had the same problem with my iPhone 3G. There was quite a large gap where the rubber was not sealed properly. A spec of dust got under the screen. It was literally the only thing I could stare at while using the phone.
I scheduled a Genus Bar appointment and got a new phone. The new phone, luckily, is not defective.
As others have mentioned, I do not believe that this is "within the technical specs". This is a big issue and I advise that you try to keep finding one that is not defective.
Out of all my friends and family with both second and first gen iPhones, I am the only one that has gotten one with the light leak issue. I think it's an unusual case for 5 phones, in a row, to have it.
Sorry and best of luck on finding one that is 100% up to your standards.

  • Sluggish iPhone performance after iTunes Match

My iPhone is sluggish and I think it happened after enabling iTunes Match.  I notice the sluggishness mainly in the Music app.  If I'm playing something and the iPhone goes to sleep, when I wake it takes maybe 10 seconds before it will let me unlock the slider.  The Music app takes awhile to load, and it always goes out to the Internet on launch.  If I play a tune then turn the phone sideways to view coverflow it takes at least several seconds.  I don't remember the phone behaving this way before iTunes Match.  It's an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.  Any ideas?

My Camaro will recognize the iPhone still, but sits indexing for well over 45 minutes. I have yet to be able to play anything attached via the iPhone to USB connector. Bluetooth streaming does work, however the bluetooth on my 4s keeps cutting out (always has). So bluetooth really isn't an option.
My work around for the indexing issue was to create a playlist on my computer that was a reasonable size (500 songs for me), then download everything on my iPhone, then turn iMatch off. That keeps the files local to the iPhone, and indexing is only around 5 minutes. Otherwise the Camaro's computer needs to index the 8000+ songs I have on the cloud, even if they're not physically on the iPhone.
It would be nice if Apple would have an xml index already built that the GM computer systems could access, since they are supposed to be native to each other.

  • Verizon DSL slow since Sunday January 6, 2013--Northern Virginia

I will try to make this short as the last 4 days have been a real nightmare.
My normally and for a long time rock solid DSL 3360/768 began running slowly on Sunday January 6, 2013.  I let it go until Monday, January 7, 2013 when it became so bad I had to call for a trouble ticket.  Aside from the time I spent finding a number and waiting to create a ticket, I managed to get one created.
During the ticket creation process, no less than three tries of a line test by Verizon technical support showed (to them) no problems.  On the fourth try they said there was a "short" somwhere outside my house, they would send a technician.
On Wednesday, January 9, 2013 a technican arrives and begins the process of trouble shooting.  The NID is checked as well as all jacks/dsl filters.  The "problem" is indicated in a wall jack.  All speeds are verified with a meter the technician has, at the NID, at the wall jack and through the modem.  The modem although old (Westell 2200) have been very reliable.  The "short" is "fixed" and we begin putting things back.
When I try to get onto the net, everything is very slow (as I have been saying).  The technician is puzzled as am I.  I run several speedtests on DSL Reports and they all show various speeds ranging from .5 mb down and .7 up speeds.  I run several latency tests and there is severe packet loss along the traceroute.
The technician (who was very nice) offered to swap the DSL modem, brings in a Westell 6100g from his truck and we spend the next 30 minutes trying to set it up. After the technician calls his tech support, the modem is brought up and is working.
The Verizon webpage loads very fast.  When I go to do another speed test the results are the same.  The modem diagnostics show 3360/768, his meter shows 3360/768.  At this point he says that he does not know anything about third party websites and if the Verizon webpage loads there is nothing more he can do, at which point I agree.
Later last evening I get an automated call telling me that my problem has been resolved.  If I disagree I can speak to someone, which I promptly do.  When someone comes on the line I relate my story and they begin again testing the line.  This person immediately recognizes a problem and escalates my issue to a level two support.  While I wait, I manage to find a speed test on Verizon's website that (not suprisingly) shows the same slow download speeds as the "third-party" site did..
When the person returns to the phone (a call that lasted over an hour) I am informed that there are "network issues affecting my speed" and they are working on it.  Interestingly, the speed test on the Verizon website also has a message about my test being impacted by network issues and that I should run the test later.
As I wait for something to be fixed, I just wanted to relate my story as there is little anyone here could do to help me.
Hope others have better luck and you really do not want to hear my experience trying to order FIOS to replace my DSL.  I have already sold my Verizon stock after these last four days.

I feel your pain! Things are slow down below you in Fredericksburg, VA and customer service equally bad!
I have been having problems with slow DSL connection, extreme packet loss and latency issues for months in Fredericksburg, VA. Calls to tech spt are typical “line check is fine, nothing more we can do”.  Won’t send me a new router, or listen to any of the inputs on issues I am seeing on the network with test tools, etc. I told them it would be easier for me to and less hassel to just drop them and move back to Comcast, they basically send that fine with them, so I said transfer me to billing, of course I sat on hold for 30mins and gave up. .  I’ve been a network engineer for over 16 years, and I would treat an of my customers that way I would be fired, in addition we work till a problem is fixed no matter how small.
Over the last day, I took my Linksys router out of the picture, ran my laptop direct to my modem and got the same results, packet loss and slowness. Checked all my in house wiring and all is fine. I then hooked my modem and laptop directly to the test port or NIC outside the house and got the same results. So, not my wiring or personal equipment, still might be modem.  I even involved one of my neighbors that has Verizon DSL connection, and his connection is fine, however we compared trace routes to various places and routing path goes over a different back bone router than mine. Can understand why one house over travels a different path than me and I see packet loss about the same point that we separate out.
During all the trouble shooting I notice that I had static inside and outside the house, so I call Verizon again  told them I had static on my phone lines as well, this finally prompted them to send tech out…we will see what he comes up with…supposed to be here by tomorrow, we will see what happens. I note convinced it the wire more so a problem with the back bone network, as this problem comes and goes but this is the worst it has ever been. I am fed up with customer support or lack there of and will be ordering up Comcast this coming week, if all goes well will be say goodbye to Verizon.
Here is sampling of trace routes and pings, if by chance someone from Verizon actually checks this forum…which I never see anyone of the provide feed back.

  • Websites unreachable in Northern Virginia/DC area?

Since yesterday, I haven't been able to reach some sites reliably, or use some sites at all. (Including most of verizon.com, which has made this all that much more fun).
Looking at tracerts, packets seem to be not getting routed reliably either from verizon-gni.net or alter.net, so I think (?) it's still in Verizon's bailiwick. But I don't see any indication verizon's aware of the problem. (Again, ?)
    Anybody else having this problem?

Yes, have been experiencing this since Dec 6th, and the issue has gotten much worse on the 8th.  Almost anything site I try to get to times out or the address doesn't get properly resolved.  With persistence some web sites will eventually load, sometimes quickly, sometimes very slowly and/or partially.  Media sites like Netflix, Amazon, Sony Entertainment Network and Vudu will not load at all.
Glad to finally know it it something in the area after spending a day of dealing with poor QoS and router reboots.

  • Why can't I get DSL in Northern Virginia?????????????????

Hello all, and I hope Verizon is out there somewhere. I live in Midland, VA. I am 1 mile away from Route 28, who's right-of-way houses the major communications pipeline for the eastern coast of the US, and I can not get DSL at my home. I have a Verizon land line and cell phones, but Verizon does not offer DSL. I am forced to use Hughesnet (or dial-up). The elementary school a few miles away has a T1 line, but I can't get DSL. I live in a regular neighborhood, with a county park at the end of the street. We have paved streets, underground utilities and don't have a goat path for a driveway, but no DSL. I contact Verizon constantly and get: "Oh, well you know we're upgrading our services all over the area, I'm sure it will be available in a few months", but still no DSL. What gives?????????????

Unfortunately DSL is not available everywhere. In order for a customer to be eligible for DSL, the service location must be within a certain distance of the CO, which is probably the case here. I know you said you spoke to various Verizon reps already but if you would like, I can verify once again for you. Just private message me your Verizon Telephone Number if you do.

  • Will iPhone 4S work in northern Canadian community that has only CDMA coverage?

Will the iPhone 4S work in a northern Canadian community that only has CDMA coerage?

The CDMA iPhone only works on Verizon or Sprint in the US.  Even the 4S which is a world phone only works on the Verizon and Sprint CDMA networks (and their CDMA roaming partners worldwide).  Unless and until Apple releases the iPhone for other CDMA carriers, it will not work on other CDMA networks officially.
Can it be made to work on those networks, possibly.
Can that be discussed here?  No.

  • IPhone interference with Cable receiver

So I'm trying to watch a tv show in HD (Cox Digital Cable in Northern Virginia) on my Explorer 8000HD. I've learned that whenever I click the check e-mail button on my 1st Gen iPhone, it causes the cable to cut out and all I get is a grey screen. I have to change to another channel and come back to the HD channel (Channel 727 - DSCHD) in order to resume the feed. I have been able to replicate this phenomenon on other HD channels but not to the degree of channel 727. On other channels I just get brief blockiness and loss of audio before it corrects itself.
    Can anyone else replicate this?
Makes me wonder about what the phone is doing to my brain.

Its not the DVR or the TV (unless its a CRT). Its the cables that you have hooked up. Either the coaxial cable running from the wall to your DVR box is not shielded or the cable running from the DVR box to the TV is unshielded producing the signal interference. Same thing happens to my small TV in the bed room when I have my iPhone sitting on the dresser next to it. I've found that in that case it was the coaxial cable running from the wall. I have seen it mess with CRT TVs and it not be the cables. Its kind of strange though its messing with it from across the room, mine normally has to be pretty close to things to get interference.

  • Massive Slowdown of 75/35 in Virginia - Tests fast, works v.slow

I'm here in Northern Virginia and probably around Halloween or earlier, practical FiOS speeds dropped dramatically. I have 75/35 and have been getting consistent hardwired speeds of about 0.5MB/s-1.2MB/s. Although Speedtest.net and Verizon's own speedtest site show healthy burst speeds (tonight's results appended below), any practical usage slows to an absolute crawl. iTunes downloads and App updates drop to about 0.5MB/s. Vimeo and YouTube vary wildly from 0.3MB/s - 3.6MB/s. I mean from second to second, the speeds spike up and down over a ten-fold range. The same situation exists for my wife's iMac via wifi.
Here is my test result from Verizon's speed test. BTW, they have no updated diagnostic or tuning tools to work for Mac users. Surely the half-dozen or so of us merit a bit more love than this. Of course I can't make heads or tails of the output. Perhaps a Verizon operative can help.
Note: I spent about an hour on chat with a Verizon support person checking the outside box and resetting my router. He even took over via GoToAssist for a bit but still not dice. Same situation and no help so I'm guessing the issue is upstream. And I keep strong active antivirus on at all times and I do not p2p share or torrent (iTunes addict here) so I can't imagine I'm being throttled.

  • How can i get my i phone's original information after I registered it using a preexisting iphone's information?

Please i need help. i have had my iphone for 3 months but i did not register it. Today i registered it but i did not notice when it asked me to register it under a preexiting iphone's name and information and i said yes. After i synced the iphone i noticed that my contacts photos and videos were replaced by the other iphone's information please help me. Is there a way to recover the original information??

    AdaS_VZW,
I'm not sure if the area has been surveyed; it's a large group of apartment buildings about a within a couple miles of Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia, so I would imagine that it probably has, but I'm not sure. How would I find out?
I understand that the Network Extender does not support LTE connections (I know there are two models, the 1x-only and 3g, both made by Samsung - I have the 3g model, SCS-2U01). I know that it can support a 3G data connection, but that should be irrelevant - I'm always connected to my wifi network in my apartment.
What's particularly vexing, however, is that both a Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Nexus in my apartment (the other lines on my account) do not seem to have this issue. While I haven't done so with the S4, the Nexus exhibits this problem when my SIM is in it - and again, this is a fresh SIM from just a few weeks ago.
I'm currently trying to disable Mobile Data when in the apartment to see if that will make it more stable. I'll post in a day or two with results from that.
