IPhone Provisioning confusion?

Hi
I've recently paid to get the iPhone developer certificate and I'm a bit confused about the many jargon terms, all of which seem related to giving me permission to build iPhone apps.
Can anybody explain in plain English the difference between the
•Profile
•AppID ... which seems to be both a text string I chose, and a 10 digit code which I didn't
•Certificate Name
•Profile Identifier (a long code string)
I have read about this many times on iphone provisioning portal, but I just can't understand which is which.
AppID: presumably this is an ID for a specific app? Does this mean I have to get a new one every time I write a new app? What about if I'm just writing test apps for my own use that I'm not putting on the store?
It says in the organizer that my profile expires in 3 months time. I paid for a year, so should I be worried about this?
Fianally, when I make an xcode project, I get this set as a Bundle Identifier:
com.yourcompany.${PRODUCT_NAME:*****identifier} (I put the asterix there because I don't even know if those digits are 'mine'!) Does this seem correct?
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on any of these topics.
Steve

I believe that when you see a date of 04/01/1978 it is what they call a "AS IS" and was sold in a large lot to a vendor. I got one from a seller in NY and when I called in for support that is what I was told. Apple will not support this phone. They said that I would need to get support from the seller. last time I ever buy a phone on ebay lesson learned.

  • IPhone 5 confusing Wi-Fi data with Cellular?

I bought my iPhone 5 just a few hours ago. When it was set-up, naturally it used 4G to access the Internet. Once I got home, I connected to my home Wi-Fi.
It is my understanding that the iPhone will always prefer Wi-Fi to 3G or 4G. Plus, the entire night while I used it, I never saw anything other than the WiFi symbol in the corner.
I got a text message from Verizon saying that I had used 75% of my allowed data. (2GB on the plan, but it is prorated) I checked MyVerizon, and it said I had used 427 MB of Cellular Data!! I clicked a link to open a detailed chart, which informed me of only four instances of Cellular data, which totaled up at 1.8 MB. This is a number that makes sense.
So I turned off Cell Data entirely, but left the Wi-Fi on, and continued to download videos from YouTube. Moments later, I got another text from Verizon saying I had used all my prorated data! I checked and Cellular Data was still off! The note even said "With this turned off, all data will be restricted to Wi-Fi"! So I clearly didn't use Cell data, but Verizon thought that I did! Now I'm over my limit and possibly in huge trouble.
The figures given seem consistent with my overall usage, though 99% of this usage was on Wi-Fi. I would stake my life on that fact. No joke. Is it possible that my Wi-Fi data is somehow being confused with Cell Data, even though it's turned off?
In the morning, I'm going to visit the store that I bought it from. However, any info that you guys can give me would really help.
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue. I am going to call Verizon this morning. We purchased two new phones and only used them on LTE for about an hour while we went to dinner. All the other time we were in our house with WiFi indicated on the phone. I checked by usage after finding this post, 318 MB used on the new Verizon shared data plan. Each phone used over 150 MB. The only thing we were doing was surfing the internet and sending iMessages while we were at dinner. I looked back at the items that I was doing in the house and I remember after activating the phones and doing a backup that each phone had about 40 apps that needed updated. I believe that 150 MB per phone was due to this period of time.
This is a great example of Apple and Verizon not informing the consumer of a money making feature on the new phone. Verizon promoted the shared data plan to me in the fact that by using WiFi when available would mitigate any overage on data. Apple doesn't inform the consumer that there is a cellular over WiFi feature as there was on the Beta version. I sure hope this gets fixed because I have only once in the last two years ever used 150 MB of data in a single day. We normally only use 1.5 GB in a billing cycle. UGH!!

  • Iphone 5 confused battery or not

At one time I was convinced that my iPhone 5 had a defective battery, but some events have definitely confused me so I am here to ask the experts what they think.
I was going to send my phone in for service (battery service) the day I go in for surgery since I won't need a phone for a few days.  Something very strange has happened to my phone, though.  It got almost worthless for 3 days.  My phone was getting about 2 hours of usage time to get down to 40% battery.  At this point my phone would shut down, and wouldn't turn on until I charged it.  It would show the charging symbol when I tried to turn it on.  After 3 days of this annoying behavior, something changed.  My next charge lasted 5.5 hours of actual usage which I consider pretty decent for a 1.5 year old phone.  It has lasted for at least 5 hours of actual usage ever since.  I know that batteries can't rejuvinate themselves so I am wondering what is going on.  Does anyone have any ideas.
It might sound looney, but I was almost wondering if the government was hacking my phone and causing my phone to loose battery.  Maybe they finally got bored and now my battery is fine.  I think I am kidding about this, but I can't understand the events that have happened with my phone.

More likely it was some app calling home in the background or you being in an area of poor cell coverage that was causing battery loss. If it seems to have corrected itself - I would just wait and watch
    OR
Chat with Apple support - they can run a remote diagnostic and see what is up with your battery

  • IPhone Purchase Confusion

I bought an Iphone 5 from a seller in Hong Kong on eBay (which I now regret) who had claimed that the iphone was factory unlocked. It wasn't, because I tried activating it at my local Sprint & AT&T Store and failed. I am SIM locked out of my phone because no SIM card I have tried works. I did a test using my phone's serial number and found that the carrier was Sprint (??). It said this:
    Serial Number: F17JC9DXF8GH
    Part Description: AS-IS, IPHONE 5, BLACK, 16GB-USA

I don't know what to do to even access my phone since Sprint doesn't sell SIM Cards for me to unlock. If I go to an Apple store will they be able to reset my iPhone or atleast tell me what my carrier is? Because according to the test it said Verizon was the initial carrier..and it apparently was also registered somehow in 1978.

  • Iphone identity confusion

My wife and I both have iPhones. My wife is not at all technical, so I set her phone up and logged it into my iTunes account. Everything has been working all right for quite a while. However, now I have discovered that when I look in the Contacts on my iPhone, it says next to my wife's name "me". When our daughter wants to reply to an SMS from my wife, I receive the SMS. When our daughter calls my wife on Facetime, it rings on my iPhone.
I do not see in my iPhone settings anything that would explain this. I also cannot see in the Contacts why my wife is identified as me.
Thanks for any help in this.

That happens because both of you are using the same Apple ID.  Your wife needs her own Apple ID to use for iCloud syncing, iMessage and FaceTime.
She can continue to use (if this is what you want), your Apple ID for iTunes and the AppStore, so that both of you can continue to enjoy the same music and apps, specially those that you have to pay for.

  • Iphone 4 confusion with Find my Iphone. Need help!

I bought my sister an Iphone 4 from Craigslist a couple days ago. Today someone knocked on our door asking if we had just gotten an iPhone 4, saying theres was stolen. The person said they used Find My Iphone to track it here. I'm just wondering since i restored the iPhone can someone still use "Find my Iphone" to locate it? Or use it's last location when it was on? If this phone was actually stolen i want to give it back but if its just the person's friend making a story up obviously i dont want to give it to them.
    Thanks

Don't trust this person. I previously had an iPhone 4. When I log in to Find my iPhone it still shows up but "No Location Available" because the new owner entered their own Apple ID to block me access.

  • Provisioning Confusion

    Hi folks,
New here, first post, please be gentle.
I'm trying to get an iPad provisioned to accept code. The company I work for has a "company" iPad as well as a "company" Developer account. We have a certificate issued from that account which is valid and active. I have downloaded it and the WWDR certificate and installed them in Xcode. Xcode sees the device, but when I go to the Organizer I find that all four of the Provisioning Profiles I have installed have a status of, "Valid signing identity not found".
Because there is already a certificate issued on this account the portal does not give me the option of uploading my own Certificate Request, which when approved and installed (as I understand it) would then get "connected" to my public/private key pair in my keychain.
How do I go about "connecting" a Certificate that already exists to a key pair? Or is there some other way to make this work? I was told it was difficult, but this is getting downright frustrating.
    Thanks,
    -- Sam

Update to my own post. I'm not sure this "solves" anything, so I won't mark it as answered, but I did find a workaround, or maybe a new feature.
With permission, I deleted the existing certificate and uploaded my own request, which got things working a little more like the examples I've seen. This got me past the initial issue of certificates and key pairs not lining up.
Then I got a mobile provisioning profile and connected my device, and viola, I still did not get the "Use for Development" button that multiple sources, including Xcode's own Help facility, said I would see. As this was the whole point of the exercise I was about ready to start making Mac frisbees.
Lo and behold, I then noted the "+ Add to Portal" button on the Organizer. Out of desperation I pushed it, assuming that since the device was already registered it wouldn't do anything. Surprise, surprise, it contacted the Portal, did some magic, and ... Sat there. Nothing changed, no indication of success or failure, but now when I build my app for the device, it works, where before it said it was not provisioned.
Cool! I guess. Did I discover the magic cookie for this step, or just stumble into something that'll come back to bite me?

  • Confused iPhone wi-fi syncing to two iTunes libraries

My iPhone is confused. It is syncing to two different computers. I have always had it synced to my home MacBook, and only charge it via USB during work on a Windows7 computer. Never a problem in three years. Now with ios5 and iTunes 10.5, after setting up automatic wi-fi syncing with the Macbook at home, I now see that it is also set-up to auto-sync with my work windows computer. On the iPhone, both computers are individually listed in the Settings/General/iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and I can sync to both and get no warnings, etc. Funny, the windows computer does not have wi-fi capabilities, but when I do connect it via cable to charge, i can initiate and complete a wi-fi sync. There are no apps at all on that iTunes. What is it syncing?
Also, I never had music on my phone before, and I tried to add a few albums from my home iTunes library yesterday. When I pressed sync, iTunes said the phone was synced to another iTunes library. To continue, it would erase my iPhone completely and load everything from that computer. But, that's where all of the content came from in the first place!
How do I remove the windows work computer from the Settings/General/iTunes Wi-Fi Sync page so only my home MacBook is listed, and clear up all the confusion my iPhone is having?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    I have the same problem.
I have 2 sync profiles for just the same Imac.
The top profile is syncing correctly, only that profile is missing Podcasts and iTunes U.
The profile bellow will not sync and that one got Podcasts and iTunes U in it.
Can i combine the 2 profiles or can i remove the inactive one and get the other profile syncing Podcasts and iTunes U too?
    Thanks.

  • IPhone Developer Program Portal

Im at the portal and it has 7 leftside options:
Home - starting point which has a provisioning assistant button
Team - im the only one anyway so this is easy
Certificates - ive uploaded my CSR and downloaded the issued keys for Developer & Distribution
Devices - Ive registered my device's ID
AppIds - CONFUSING - do i need to create an AppID for each app i want to upload? Or what is this for? And how do i choose its name? because if its required for every app, then i would do something like FirstAppNameXXXX and then for another app i would do SecondAppNameYYYY...but if this is just one ID i need to create it would be diffnt...
Provisioning - CONFUSING - its asks me to create a profile name, check the certificate to use and then an AppID so i guess AppIDs are not optional. So do i need to create an AppID and a provisioning profile for each app i upload?
Distribution - i guess this is the final step...so ill get to it when i clear up the previous 2 which have me a bit confused
I would like to know whats next so i can upload, first a free app, and then a paid version of it.

Follow the process in this pdf...
    iPhone Developer Program
Standard Program Portal User Guide for iPhone OS 3.1 Version 2.5
    • AppID: One for each app is my method, but you can create a global ID if you like...see the PDF above. Not optional if you expect to go into the store.
    • Provisioning is for testing on a device - I use one profile but again, multiple IDs.
    • Distribution is for uploading to the store
I suggest you don't waste time doing two apps, and work to design a free app that has in-app purchasing instead.
Good luck in any case and be sure to check the portal for additional resources, how-to videos, etc.

  • Iphone 4s voice to text failure

SIRI is working. Voice to text for test messages and email is not. Purple dots spin and spin and then stop. I am AT+T. I see some evidence that others have this issue but no evidence yet that Apple is aware/addressing. Anyone know more?

    Two things to consider:
    1) Voice recognition occurs through Apple's servers and not in the iphone itself. There have been occasions, albeit rare, where everyone using the 4s experiences this lack of voice recognition problem. We have learned that in those instances where the problem is broad based it is because Apple is having a problem with their servers. The problem is not your phone! In the past, Apple has usually "solved" the server problem within several hours to a day.
    2) If the problem is specific to your phone alone, one tip offered by Apple support is:
    * bring up the shortcut screen (double click home button twice)
    * hold the message icon button till it wiggles
    * then tap the home screen again.
This procedure may reset the voice recognition. Support says that sometimes the iphone gets confused and needs a "nudge".
    Hope this helps.

  • HT204053 I created a different Apple ID for Icloud on my new IPhone and having problems with getting Itunes, etc.  How do I change my Icloud Apple ID to be the same ID and password?

I created a different Apple ID for my Icloud on my new IPhone (said a free email was available or something similar) rather than the other choice offered of using my same existing Apple ID.  Now I keep having issues accessing my account and my password isn't working to access Icloud to download Itunes.  Can I undo this new account I created and just use my one existing Apple ID?  This is my first IPhone and confused with this part of the setup!  Thanks.

If you know the answers to your security questions, you should be able to change your password without using email authentication (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HE36).  If you don't, you may be out of luck.

  • How many iphones and i touches

we have a family of 4. my wife has an iphone and i will have one when my contract is up in aug. we are getting an i touch for my daughter for her birthday, i already ordered it. someone my wife works with is saying you can only sync 2 iphones per i tunes account? or 2 i touches or only 2 in any combination to 1 itunes account. we were going to have my daughter sync hers to get some of the same apps my wife has on her phone but not if i will be unable to do the same when i get my iphone. anyone confused yet? any answers will be helpfull and thanks....

I have not heard of a limit to number of attached devices. I currently have 2 iPhones and 1 iPod touch all synced to a single iTunes account and haven't had a problem so far in fact i'm looking at adding a couple of Apple TV's to that mix as well soon as i buy another LCD (when my projector dies).

  • IPhone 2.0 exchange calendar sync issue with PUSH enabled

I have setup Push sync over Exchange for my iPhone. If I accept an incoming meeting request it does not update Entourage calendar. If I change delivery setting to fetch, the issue disappears. Is this a known bug? BTW - several of my work colleagues have noted the same issue. All are Entourage users too.

You can accept/decline/mark tentative any meetings sent to you, and you can also edit meetings you create (whether on the phone or in Outlook, OWA, etc).
IMPORTANT: make sure your user name for the Exchange account as entered on your iPhone exactly matches the case of the user name set up on the Exchange server. (Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your-Exchange-Account > Account Info). Set both the Email and Username fields to exactly match the case of your email and username on Exchange. Look up yourself in the Exchange Address Book in Outlook and see how it's entered. i.e. [email protected] must be entered in the iPhone with the same capitalization. I also edited my own contact cards to match -- just to be sure.
Otherwise, the iPhone gets confused with meeting invites and might ask you to Accept/Maybe/Decline your own meetings! If this is the case, you also won't be able to edit meetings on the iPhone even if you create them.
As far as i know, the above is only true for Exchange accounts. I had this problem, and solved it last night.

  • ITunes could not restore the iPhone "___'s iPhone" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible

Ok so bear with me here, it is somewhat of a long story.
I had been using an iPhone 4 for a while, with an old iTunes account that has all my stuff from over the years on it, on my computer. A week ago, I dropped by iPhone 4 in the sink and it got covered with water, despite quickly pulling it out, putting it in rice under a lamp, the phone was shot, and I was without a phone. My Dad, who is on the same AT&T plan with me, was using an iPhone 3. He was available for an upgrade, so he got a new iPhone, and gave me the iPhone 3. Now i'm not an apple master or anything but I have a good idea of what I am doing, normally, I backup my phone to my computer every few months. Basically everytime I plug it in to my computer which isn't very often because I just charge it with the wall charger. So got my SIM card with the same phone number and all, and obviously, while still being my number, it had my dads apps, messages, contacts and photos on it. So I bring it home, and plug it into my computer, I cancel the intial sync, and right click on the phone on the left side of iTunes and hit "restore from backup" I look through the list of backups, and the most recent one I see is from Dec 11, 2011. Which is surprsing because i'm pretty sure I had backed up since then, but I say whatever i'll still get contacts apps and most pictures back etc. So I hit it, and go through with it, and it tells me there was a more recent date of backing up, relieved, I click on that and continue, the normal bar comes up it says something like estimated time 30 minutes, so I walk away, come back 5 minutes later, and I get an error message saying, "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "____'s iPhone" because the backup was corrupt or is not compatible with the iPhone." Confused, I go back and try again, however this time I click on "old backup (the dec 11th one rather than the newer one) and the same thing happens after a few minutes. I go back a third time, and select a time from August of 2011. And I hit restore, and it goes through. However, this happened to be a backup I made right when I got my new iPhone 4, and therefore I basically restored my phone, to having nothing. Thats where I sit right now, with none of my contacts or pictures. I'm not sure if I backed up to iCloud or not and i'm not sure how to retrieve that. Some extra things: When I try to sync my iTunes library and apps onto the new iphone 3, I need to greatly reduce the number of songs and apps beacuse this iPhone is only an 8gb while the old one was 16, (I don't think that is the reason I am getting the error message though because when I sync it clearly says "Your iPhone does not have enough space). Also, this is obviously an iPhone 3, not an iPhone 4, updated with the most recent iTunes software, which, I believe is 5.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have over 1,400 pictures saved on my old phone (very important things to me) and a contact list of over 300 including important friends, coaches, teachers and workers.
Thank you very much, if it doesn't say my email on here try me at [email protected]
    Thanks again
    -Drew
Edit: The current phone is an iPhone 3G, not a 3Gs.

    ashleyfrg2,
you will need to restore your phone as a new device and NOT from backup.  If you've been using your phone as recommended, you should have minimal data loss:  Photos should have been imported to your computer right after taking them; contacts should be safe in a cloud service or on your computer.  You CANNOT downgrade to 4.3.3.
