IPhone reception -technical question

Please don't ball me out if this is a dumb question - I love my iPhone and how it does everything except get good reception at my home. Most of the time I have zero bars. My previous Nokia phone ( also at&t) got a better signal here. So here's the question - does anyone know if the new iPhone will have the same antenna or a different one? I went to the at&t support site to chat with a technician about this but a lot of their site is down for maintenance.

Some believe that the plastic back will help improve reception. Since the phone hasn't been released yet, it's tough to say for sure.

  • Are there any actual technical questions?

I know, I get it. I too felt a tiny bit of an ouch when they announced the cut. I wanted Apple to acknowledge that the price drop was a little unsettling to early-adopters and to thank us for taking a chance on a totally new product. Never did I imagine they would offer us monetary compensation, that's pretty unheard of for a company as large as Apple. They didn't have to do it, but they did because Apple recognized that without it's loyal base it's just another company, so bravo Apple. Of course it's a credit...Apple still has to make money. Yes, they totally expect and hope that you'll spend more than the $100. Apple is not a 501(c)3 Charitable Organization, doling out cash because you feel disenfranchised.
But enough is enough. If you feel ashamed, seek therapy. If you want cash, see an ATM. If you want to blend your iPhone in protest, post it on YouTube and send me the link because I love laughing at idiots. But if all you want to do is whine, please go elsewhere. People complained, they made themselves heard, Apple responded, Job well done.
Now can we please go back to discussing technical questions like why not having GPS and MMS is a dealbreaker, and answering questions like "Why doesn't any sound come out of my right speaker" or "When can I use my iPhone in Ethiopia?" Come on, that's why we're all here folks.

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

  • Some Technical Questions Concerning iPhoto 09.

I would like to use iPhoto to arrange, organize, tag, and otherwise un-mangle my family photos taken within the last ten years. However, I have never so much as launched an instance of iPhoto! I have a couple of technical questions that I'm hoping can be answered by a forum guru.
1.) I love the idea of iPhoto tagging and organizing my photos via places, faces, events etc. How does iPhoto store the metadata which allows it to organize as such? Is this data added to the photo files as additional EXIF data? Or is there an iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?
2.) When "importing" photo files into iPhoto, I'm assuming that additional thumbnail files are created and stored. Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default (as iTunes will do with MP3s if you are not careful?) And when you start creating smart albums et al, I'm sure something similar to iTunes Library files (.ITL, .XML etc) are also created. What are the important files and directories created in the process?
Perhaps these questions can be answered appropriately by addressing my third question...
3.) Can someone point me to a whitepaper, article, webpage or discussion of iPhoto which goes beyond the available Apple.com tutorial? I know there must be a book available, but I really don't have the time to dedicate to a full book on the subject. I'm extremely lazy and still haven't finished the copy of Ulysses I purchased ten years ago. Just need some quick and dirty explanations...

IF you're not too lazy to read the replies:
1.) I love the idea of iPhoto tagging and organizing my photos via places, faces, events etc. How does iPhoto store the metadata which allows it to organize as such? Is this data added to the photo files as additional EXIF data? Or is there an iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?
This metadata is stored in the iPhoto database. It can be written to the files on export. Prior to Export there's no need to. I have no idea what you mean by "iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?"
2.) When "importing" photo files into iPhoto, I'm assuming that additional thumbnail files are created and stored.
Correct. They are what you see in the iPhoto Window in Organising mode.
Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default
    Yes.
And when you start creating smart albums et al, I'm sure something similar to iTunes Library files (.ITL, .XML etc) are also created.
No there aren't. Again, this is all stored in the iPhoto Database.
What are the important files and directories created in the process?
There's only one you need back up. It's the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
    At a guess this question:
Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default
suggests you don't want this to happen.
You can run iPhoto in Referenced Mode where this won't happen. I strongly urge you not to, expecially as you haven't a clue about iPhoto and are very lazy.
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • Need the old announcement back not to post technical questions here

Not that it was ever very effective. But, better than nothing.
I'm beginning to see a number of posts with questions and responses that don't belong here, but in the appropriate forum (to which they haven't yet been moved.) I would like to see this forum still reserved for discussions or doesn't-fit-elsewhere feedback only.
I'm seeing one post with replies, which is almost a day old; it hasn't been moved.
I can understand wanting to help someone and not let their question langish, but I wouldn't want to see this become too common.

If they don't agree, they (you) can choose to do what they want. I'm not suggesting any limits on what people can say here; that's their right completely. But, some may, perhaps, see the correctness -- or not -- in the suggestion (not demand) I made, which, if it wasn't made, they might not even begin to consider.
My remarks were not intended to inhibit people from making any response to someone who mistakenly posts here. I believe I suggested they could refer the poster to the appropriate forum. Again, how or in what fashion, someone chooses to respond is entirely up to them.
It would have been over the top if I had been in any way scolding, but my remarks and tone were far from that.
If this forum bears any semblance to the euphemistically named "community," these kinds of disagreements are inherent in the very nature of any community and I'm ready to live with that.
If someone mistakenly posts a technical question in the wrong technical forum, I usually answer their question, anyway, if possible -- I'm not a sticker, or hardass, as some may be, when that occurs. But, I think the nature of this particular forum suggests a different approach.
Of course, the ultimate decision rests with the hosts.

  • A technical question about time.

I find myself wondering what would be the total playing time of my iTunes library. How can I determine this? I could copy the total file into Excel then add up the time column, but as I have 12,000 tracks I doubt Excel could handle it. Is there a simple way to do this?

Select Library - Music and look at the botton center of the iTunes window.
Click it to change the displayed info.

  • Bootcamp Technical Question...

I have read that Bootcamp places Windows in a contagious space partition. I would like to know if Mac OS X remains in its contagious space partition as well once a Bootcamp partition has been created.
Up Next is an illustrated example (don't know how much will it help my question):
Does the drive partition map look like this after you create a Bootcamp Partition?
    ----------(MACOSX)----------))---------(BOOTCAMP)----------
    or Like this?
    ------(MACOSX)------))------(BOOTCAMP)-------))-------(MACOSX)-------
Thank you for your assistance in this matter!

Thank You Niel for your assistance with this technical question. Now I know that OSX will remain in a continious partition in the hard drive and Windows will remain on its own continious partition as well. I was asking this because I wanted to know if every programs, OSX Updates or files that were created in my Mac OS X partition would be put in another part of the HDD if OSX found a bootcamp partition in the way. However, I do not think this should happen since the Mac OS X Extended File System avoids fragmentation by providing a partition with continous HDD Space and it's logical that OSX will want to create the Bootcamp partition on its continous space just like it would do with a program or file, I dont believe that OSX will want a Windows partition in the middle of the OSX continious HDD partition space.
Niel, do you agree with my assesment here?

  • Technical question regarding xml:lang...

    Greetings,
I have a bit of a technical question regarding language alternative (Lang Alt), are these valid statements if there is no alternatives (using dc:title as an example):
    1)
    This is a test title
    2)
    This is a test title
    3)
    This is a test title
Are these values valid, or is there an obligration to put them in an rdf:Alt ?? In my head 1 and 2 are valid, but no 3, am I right?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your quick response!!
Can you please give little more detailed explanation on what exactly is the entity. Where does that entity be defined and what exactly does an entity represent. Please let me know.

Yes i did remover the sim and put it back in. shut down, removed sim re booted up did a network reset and installed the sim.
    no change
I have way better reception outdoors than indoors, cases do not seem to mater for me.

iOS 4.01 Due Early Next Week; Addresses Antenna Issues
Reception issues observed by new iPhone 4 owners, derided as the "Death Grip" by bloggers, appears to actually be a software issue that an iOS update is expected to resolve early next week.

the link you provided didnt work relink?
and what is your view on the "software" issue? do you think apple is just going to make it appear as if we have more signal than we really do?
Potentially a band aid to merely save face. Hopefully proper RF tuning to account for the attenuation present when the hand is near that corner of the phone will be implemented.

  • Structure of Mobilsync/Backup Folder - Technical Question

    Good Afternoon
Steve was able to help me find my hidden Mobilsync/Backup folders and I wanted to confirm a couple of things.  I've done a fair amount of digging but I could not find any clarity on several questions.
I am backing up a number of IOS devices:
    A  Apple ID 1 - iPhone 4
    B  Apple ID 2 - iPhone 4,  IPad Mini
    1.  What I'm seeing is a single back-up folder for these Apple IDs, devices and back-ups.  Is that correct?
    2.  Is there any way to "decode" which back-up is for which device and Apple ID?  I spent a few minutes on the Back-up sub-folder item nanes but couldn't see anything obvious.  I didn't want to touch any of the files in these subfolders.
I can't "decode" what back-up is for what device (without an outside process of tracking date and time of back-up)... right?
    Cheers

    Hi, matthew.
The results of this Google search may prove helpful. Apparently, LASTCLIP.TXT is important if you want to edit in FCP by importing directly off the P2. See this result in particular, especially the posts therein by Barry_Green.
Note: I'm not an FCP guy, so I can't really help you further with the specifics but that little set of tips alone should get you on the way in FCP. Also, looks like that particular forum, DVXuser.com, may have other useful info for you and may be a good place to post.
