IPhone resolution question

Hi, i have some folios in the normal ipad resolution 1024x768 and i want to change now to iphone 5/6 resolution
couple questions:
- is 1136x640 the correct resolution for that?
- how do you usually/whats the best way to resize/change resolution on each article to that resolution?
Thanks

If you create an 1136x640 folio, it will show up on iPhone 5 and later but not iPhone 4s and earlier.
I think the easiest approach is to use the Alternate Layouts feature in InDesign. But keep in mind that the 1024x768 layout converted to an 1136x640 layout would most likely be too small for the iPhone. To maintain the same SD scale, consider creating an alternate layout that's 50% scale (568x384).

  • Another resolution question.....sorry

Thanks to Zac and Bogie for helping me out with the whole resolution questions but I do have one more....sorry. Do I need to log and capture in FCP in order to import the file into compressor to change the codec or is there another way? Maybe direct from the camera so it doesn;t get any more compressed than it is?
Thanks again for putting up with me
    Rick

If you shot on DV, for example, capturing it isn't compressing more. It is what it is. You shot it DV, it is DV. What's on the tape isn't "better" than what gets captured to your hard drive.
Anyway, yes, you have to capture or ingest the footage or have some sort of existing movie file to put it into Compressor. You can't take it from the camera directly.

  • IPhone 6 DPS folio resolution question

    Hi,
We have an existing iPad DPS app (multi folio with subs).
I am in the process of remaking it, to include iPhone.
I set the iPad folios up at 1024 and for the HD version it looks ok. I tend to make the rasterised assets at 50% so they look ok up.
What resolution should I use for the iPhone? As I understand it, I'll need to make renditions – two, to account for the different aspect ratios (3:2 and 16:9). Unlike the iPad, am I better artworking to the iPhone 6 plus size and coming down (Alt layouts), or could I artwork to the 5 and use a similar method to ensure clarity to 6 and 6+? Will it pick up the 5s res on the 6 and 6+?
    Thanks,
    Matt

The iPhone viewer does not have support yet for an iPhone 6/6+ rendition. You should design for the iPhone 5, every indication we've had is that iPhone 5 content looks perfectly fine on iPhone 6 with no changes.

  • Developing for all four iPhone resolutions - how do you go about it?

With iPhone 6 out, developing for both iPhone 4, 5, 6 and 6 plus is a must. I'm pretty new to considering adaptive interfaces / content when developing apps, so I'm looking for strategies on how to approach it.
My current case example is a graphic novel-type app. The development process is going to be short, so I'm looking to make an app that just displays in fullscreen on all phones, not necessarily taking advantage of the higher pixel densities. A lot of the content is bitmap pages that need to take up the full screen on all resolutions.
So what are your general strategies for going about this? As I see it, the first issue is the two different aspect ratios. The iPhone 4 is 3:2 whereas all the others are 16:9, so my idea is to first detect if the ratio is 3:2 or not, and make the app either adapt to iPhone 4 or iPhone 5 depending on the result. Apple's automatic scaling of older apps should then take care of scaling up to iPhone 6 and 6+. Correct?
Secondly, what is the next step? Do I save all the bitmap pages of my graphic novel in a 640x960 version (iPhone 4) and a 640x1136 version (iPhone 5) separately, then load the right one at runtime depending on the aspect ratio detected?
Thirdly, if I work in Flash Pro with a 960x640 canvas size, do I then load the correct bitmap version and place it in the top left corner of the canvas because it will then extend to all the edges of the screen - or do I 'center' the iPhone 5 version outside the canvas to make it fit? (Meaning do I place the content at x = 0 for the iPhone 5 version, or at x = - ((1136 - 960) / 2) ?
I hope these questions make sense, especially the last one, and would like to hear how you would approach a project with a short deadline which just needs to run fullscreen on all iPhones.

Do you have different versions of the graphic novel pages, or is there just one version of the page? If there is one version, can you crop into the page without losing anything important?
I would guess that there is one version, and that cropping into the page will lose something important. If that's the case, here's how I would handle it:
Make a stage that is 14:9. The size doesn't matter, but 1400x900 could be a good starting point.
Put down a background texture that fits well with the look of the other images. Make that fill the 1400x900 stage.
Place your page graphics so that they are within the center 1200x788 area of the stage.
Set the stage scalemode to "noBorder".
You now have a layout that will work on all devices, as narrow as iPad, and as wide as iPhone 5. All without any code. On the widest devices you'll see a bit of your background pattern to the left and right of the page graphic. On the narrowest devices you'll see a bit of background pattern above and below the page graphic. But you won't lose sight of anything important.

  • I need someone to answer a  few Find my Iphone App questions?

I lost my phone overseas...I got too drunk and lost it at some bar..I thought I was lucky because I had signed up for the find my iphone app on the ICloud. When I tried to locate my Iphone through the services, It couldn't find my Iphone because it was "OFFLINE" I assume it was because it was out of battery, making it impossible to find it now.
So I requested that my phone be put it in "lost mode", but since it's currently offline, it's Pending! I also added a contact number and a 50$ reward for the return of my phone, so the next time my phone is turned on and connects to the internet, it will lock and the stranger using my phone won't be able to get in to it and steal my info right?...But, seeing as my time is almost up being overseas, it seems very unlikely I'll be getting my phone back. So I might have to get a new phone!
My Question is, if I click on "Erase Iphone" now, it will erase all the data on my phone, And it won't be able to be tracked anymore, that's all fine and good. But the thing is, since my phone is currently off line, it's currently a pending action and won't erase the data unless it's turned on and connected to the internet again....SO, if I were to get a New Iphone, (I am eligible to uprgrade) it would be risky right? Because if I get a new Iphone and get all comfy with a new iphone, and someone turns on my old IPhone, the "Erase Iphone" request will commence and it will delete all the data on my old iphone as well as my NEW iphone right?
Cause I will be using the same Apple ID for my new Iphone! I can only assume that this is how it works....Apple isn't very clear on how stuff like that works.
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

You don't need to worry.  It won't delete anything from iCloud or your new phone, it will only erase the data on the lost phone, and that will only happen if it ever goes online again.

  • Replacement MBP; resolution questions

My previous MBP (17" 2010-ish model) died a week or so back and I'm now in the process of looking into a replacement. I do have some questions I'd like someone to help me out on, all mostly resolution related.
So the first few are related to old software:
I have Photoshop/Premiere Pro CS5.5, which Adobe seems to have given me the finger over in regards to resolution compatability because it's not CS6 or above. Without having seen a Retina Display MBP running any CS5 software (and I'm unlikely ever to at this point) I'm unaware of how atrocious it supposidly looks running on such a machine. How bad/acceptable does it look on a Retina Display MBP? Slightly fuzzy or downright horrid?
Are there any third party plugins or software to bring it Retina support? Same questions applied to Office 2011 and stuff like Google Chrome. How a Retina Display MBP treats my old software is the biggest deal breaker as to whether I simply buy a Retina Display or pre-Retina Display model. I'm not interested in upgrading to CS6 simply because Adobe clearly hates their older customers.
    Hardware:
IF the answers to the above are "no" or "you'll have to upgrade your software" and I went ahead and acquired an older Macbook Pro, for this example a 2011-12 15" (even refurbished) model at a 1680x1050 resolution, how does this affect output to an external screen?
Can the external screen display a 1920x1080/20 resolution on a system without a native 1920x1020 resolution like the 17" model did? Using the example machine's native resolution when using it by itself is not a problem for me, but not being able to get the desired external resolution when it's connected to another screen is.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I don't want to pay a ton of money for something that doesn't apply to the above.

Your replacement came out of a warehouse not off the assembly line.

  • Image size and resolution question.

Is an image at W 48.667 x H 32.444 inches at 72 res the same as an image that I could convert in photoshop to 300 res and then the with "Resample Image" clicked off would be W 11.68 x H 7.78 at 300 res for printing purposes? I'm asking this questions because after exporting 200 images from Lightroom 1.4, putting them into an wedding album I realized the images were not at 300 res but the first size listed above. I'm trying not to have to rebatch and have to put them back into the album. I sent the question to NAPP and got this back"
"If you do the math you'll see that the answer is "no."
    48x72=3456 pixels; 32x72=2304 pixels
    11.68x300=3504 pixels; 7.78x300=2334 pixels."
I did the math and it comes up to 5760 vs 5830. Pretty darn close. So would an image printed out with both settings print the about the same quality or am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Bob

Bob's question is a common one. And one of the first that most of us struggled to understand. Let's see if I can shed some light to help clarify the matter.
o The image starts out with a given number of pixels from the camera, scanner, or whatever was its source. The resolution only matters when it comes time to print the image.
72 dpi was once a common resolution for displaying on a computer monitor. Today 90 dpi is more common monitor resolution.
o Let's assume that the image is 3504 x 2336 pixels (which I got from his size @ 72 dpi).
o In "image size", if you do _not_ have 'resample image' checked, all you are doing is _rescaling the image. The image resolution is whatever you enter ...
For example, if you enter 360 dpi -- the native printing resolution of many Epson printers -- you get a print size of 9.733 x 6.489 inches
o Let's say you want to print this image at 360 dpi in portrait on 13 x 19 inch paper with a one inch border on the sides. That would make the short dimension of the image 11 inches and the long would work out to 16.5.
To do that you need to _resample_ the image to change the size. More pixels will be made. The resolution stays at 360 dpi. So check the 'resample image' box.
After resampling to get the print size and resolution you want, the pixel dimension goes to 5960 x 3960 (from 3504 x 2336). Those new pixels came at a price, but that is a matter for another thread and a lot of personal bias.
    Hope that helped.
P.S. The answer to your question, Bob, is yes. With resample off in PhotoShop, your original images should have gone to 11.68 x 7.787 inches @300 dpi.
In looking at the rest of your original post, it seems that the export didn't work the way that you wanted. Do I read right that the images turned out to be 11.68 x 7.787 @ 72 dpi? Can't help with that as I don't do Lightroom.

  • Web Gallery with iPhone, two questions

I now have three albums in my web gallery. When I take a picture with iPhone and go to upload to web gallery, only one of the albums shows up. Why not the other two?
Second question: i successfully sent the photo to that one albumb web gallery, and sure enough, it shows up when I view it in my web browser. But it was only a test and I want to delete it. How do I do that? Because when I view that album in iPhoto, the picture I uploaded from my iPhone isn't there.

    Phil Rogers,
To upload to the Web Gallery your iPhone sends it via email. Make sure "Allow uploads via Email" is selected in the Web Gallery settings.
The little "radio waves" icon next to the Web Gallery in iPhoto 7.0.1 is clickable. Clicking on it will cause iPhoto to resync the Web Gallery between .Mac and the computer.
    Hope this helps,

  • IPhone GPS question

    Hello Everybody!
I'm a new iPhone user and new at iPhoneFans.
I'm from Brazil and I have an iPhone 3Gs without jailbreak and locked to my mobile company (Vivo). Next week I'm gonna to Orlando. It will work in roaming, but I will not use data connection in roaming because it is extremelly expansive (about USD$ 15 per MB).
I would like to know if I have a GPS software like Tomtom, and if I try to use it, it will need some kind of data connection for the aGPS assistance?
And other question is, there are some GPS software that I could buy just adicional maps instead the full software for each "map" or country?
    Thanks for any help.
    []s
    Tuts

Although the iPhone uses AGPS or assisted GPS, the iPhone includes a GPS receiver. The iPhone's AGPS allows for a GPS fix to be acquired faster only. It is not required to get a GPS fix.
Data roaming is turned off by default with the iPhone. Data access via the cellular network is not required to get a GPS fix, and if you have a GPS app with maps data for a geographic location downloaded and available locally on the iPhone with the app, no internet access is required for access to the maps data.

  • IPhoto book - resolution questions

What resolution should I use to scan in my printed 4x6 photos to get the best result from iPhoto book? Is 300 ppi sufficient, or should I use 400 or higher? Don't want to scan higher than needed since the files are quite large. Don't know what the resolution is of the printer used by Apple.
Also, is it still the case that I should make sure photos are first cropped to 4x3 for best results? I have the latest version of iLife 5.
    Thanks for advice!
    Tara

Jeff - thanks so much for your reply - very helpful. I'm scanning them all in at 600 dpi to give me options of printing some large.
Another question - does anyone have experience with making photo albums from other programs/services? Are they all about the same in terms of quality? From the few I've checked out, they all look pretty much the same (as advertised) so I'm guessing they are using similar printers/processes and that quality would be about the same. In which case, I can go ahead and be confident that even though I will use iPhoto book because I am a die-hard Mac user and iPhoto is so easy to use, I'm not losing out on a better quality book that might be available through another software/service.
Thanks again for advice - can't wait to make my first iPhoto album of pre-digital camera baby pics for my now 6-year old. I made one for my boss last year that came out great but all the pics came from digital cameras.

  • HD vs. 4K Video resolution questions

I was taking some still photos with my iPhone at 3264 x 2448 for a PP project and it had me thinking. HD video is only 1920 x 1080, which is much less resolution than a basic still shot from an iPhone.
    1. Why is 1920 x 1080 HD resolution the high quality standard and not 4k video camera resolution? Is this currently a limitation of display devices and price, or is there some other reason?
    2. Can I make a 4k still image project in PP based on a resolution of something like 4096 × 2048 and than just downconvert when I'm done? Are there any issues with working with lots of stills of that size in the program?
    Thanks.

Yes. Infrastructure was dragged up to 1920x1080 over two generations. It'll take another generation to pull it up to 4k. there are already 4k displays and cameras so it'll happen faster than last time.
4K capture, processing and display is around us. The distribution is the weak link at the moment
Having said that, just as TV shows destined for SD broadcast were shot on 35mm film (which has far higher resolution than Standard Definition (720x480) ), 4K cameras are being used as the primary shooting camera for TV shows that are broadcast in HD (eg Arri Alexia is very popular for TV dramas - eg Burn Notice).
Display devices - yes that's an issue
Price - yes, 4k cameras and workflow is still very high $$$
other reason - yes, it takes time for the public to adopt the new technology. The ability to broadcast it is the biggest issue right now.

Yup, edit in one of the RED formats or make a custom sequence using the industry standard 4K resolutions.
Alternately if you know you're using only the iPhone camera photos (not video) make a sequence that matches that resolution.
    - For example I made a 4K timelapse using DSLR photos then down converted the 4K sequence to 1080p. (http://youtu.be/hK53CYs8pDY)

  • IPhone Sim Question. Christmas present for the gf

Hi Mac users. Just wanted to clear something up about the iPhone. I have myself an iPhone 3gs. Taken out with contract, phone included, all very simple. Now christmas is rolling around I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with a 3gs also as she's always looking at mine lol. Thing is, she already has a monthly contract using a sony ericsson xperia mini pro (which she hates). Her contract is with Vodaphone. Problem is tho I've heard I can't just surprise her with an iPhone, she pops her sim card in and away she goes. Apparently the sim wont work in an iphone or something and has to be set up by the provider and a different tariff arranged for it to work :/. Can anyone tell me if that information is correct as I am keen on suprising her with it on christmas day. But cant really talk to her provider without her…. and pretty much giving away the surprise. Any help or clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    WOW, Lots of questions.
First, I suggest you read the descriptions of the Apple Airport Extrem and Airport Express, the two wireless devices made by Apple, so that you understand the different capabilites of the two.
For your friend, I'm going to assume that you want to connect all the devices wirelessly. This should be possible with his existing wireless router (model?), the XP laptop, iPad, and Epson printer should all be able to reside on the network. The primary issue is printing from the Apple iOS devices (iPad, iPhone).  As you may be aware, the best and easiest solution is to have a printer that is AirPrint compatible, or purchase something like the Lantronics xPrintServer, which allows USB and network printers that are not AirPritn compatible to be used with iPads and iPhones. Finally, the Apple Airport Software Utility (there is an Apple OS and an Windows version) will allow you to configure any Apple wireless device (Express or Extreme).
So post back how you intend to connect the devices (ethernet or wirelessly) and what model epson printer you have, is it network capable or just USB? Is it AirPrint compatible?  I can give you more specific help then.
As for your network, yes you connect either the airport Extreme or Express to an existing network. But if all you want to do is add AirPrint capability so that you can easily print from your iPhone or iPad, i'd suggest that you just add an xPrint server or maybe try the NetGear Genie software (runs on a Mac or PC) which is supposed to add airprint capability to any network but requries that a Mac or PC be running on the network in order to use it.
Post back if you have more questions.

  • Quick iPhone packager question...

    Hello,
I am interested in purchasing Flash CS5 so I can make an iPhone app that involves PDF opening and saving, but I had a question to all those who have used AlivePDF... would it work with the packager for iphone to make an iPhone app?
    If not...
With the rescources Flash CS5 has with Air 2...would I be able to open a PDF, draw on it, then save it to the iPhones desktop? Or would that just be an AlivePDF thing? If AlivePDF doesn't work with the iPhone packager, is there any way I could handle opening/saving PDF's with anything else?
Thanks in advance for the reply.
    -mightybotme

    Hi mightybot,
I checked with Thibaut, and he indicated AlivePDF should work with AIR 2 mobile profile and the Packager for iPhone.  Let us know your results!

  • Export resolution and camera resolution question

I am thinking of buying a new camera- specifically one that will film video in widescreen as well as widescreen photo's. I have been looking at some that have a maximum video resolution of 848x480, which will come out fine.
With iMovie, so far I have been using my wife's Casio camera which records video at 640x480 (4:3 ratio), and I have been cropping the video in iMovie and exporting as 640x360 widescreen. The next resolution up from 640x360 in iMovies export settings is 960x540.
My question is, if my new camera has a video res of 848x480, when I export that in iMovie, will it have to be down-scaled to 640x360, or will there be an option to export at the same resolution (I don't think it will let me upscale it to 960x540)?
    Thanks.

As long as you don't have "constrain" checked, it won't resample.

  • IPhone/iTunes question

I have two questions. One, how do I download selected songs from my iTunes folder on my Mac to my iPhone?
Two, is there a good site for video tutorials on iPhone?
    mahalo

I would like the ability to browse the iTunes store on the iPhone when on the EDGE network and add them to a "download queue" that downloads only when WiFi access is available or when I am back on my home computer.
To me and many other people, the iTunes store on the iPhone serves as a great way to purchase and download new music on the fly. This is the most useful when I want a new song I hear on the radio or from a friend, etc. But since the iPhone store is only accessible via WiFi, the instant ability to find the song and purchase it is unavailable when I most want to use it. I usually forget the name of the artist or song by the time I get to a wifi network or computer.
This feature I'm requesting would allow me to purchase a song anytime anywhere but would not complicate or slow down downloads because they would not be allowed over EDGE. Thanks!
