IPhone Restore Failed

I recently had a problem with my iPhone, so I took it in to Apple and they replaced it with a new phone. I brought the phone home and tried to restore it to my last back up. About a minute into the restoring process, a message pops up on my iPhone that says "There was a problem during restore." Then it tells me to restart the phone and try to restore it again. Then I get a message on the computer saying the phone was disconnected during the restore process.
I've tried this process 4 or 5 times now and I keep getting the same message. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to restore my phone?
Also, I saw a video on youtube that said you could fix this problem by opening the hosts file in finder and deleting the gs.apple lines. The only problem is when I opened the hosts file there were no gs.apple lines.

Exactly the same problem for me - except mine is the same phone, not a new phone.
I had to wipe my iPhone clean and so later tried to restore it, opting to restore from previous backup. During the restore of previous backup data I get the message on my iPhone "Restore Failed. There was a problem during restore. Please restart your iPhone and try restoring again."
No matter how many times I perform the restore, I get the same message. There is NO error number, and there is NO error in iTunes - only on the iPhone screen. I too have no gs.apple.com entries in the hosts file on my Mac.
I have restored the iPhone backup file itself from several different points in time from my TimeMachine backups, but all of them produce the same result.

Try these steps to resolve the issue:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Restart your computer.
Make sure your computer is up to date. If an update requires a restart, check for updates again after you restart.
Learn more about updating OS X.
Learn more about updating Windows.
Restore using another USB cable.
Restore your device on another computer.
If you continue to see error 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your device, contact Apple for support.

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed. After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work. I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder. Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore. Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

IPhone Restore Failing at "Verifying IPhone Restore" Error -6

i have an old iPhone 3G that i use for my daughter. i took out the sim card and she could watch movies and play games. it crashed one day so i plugged it into a mac and tried to restore. well it goes through it's processes and gets to "Verifying iPhone Restore" (it completes "Verifying iPhone Software") and stops with an Error 6. I looked at Apple's page here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275 and Error 6 has to do with Windows Registry. Well i wasn't using a windows box to restore, i tried it on a 15" MBP, a 13" MBP, and a 27" imac. I have tried doing this over 30 times and get the same Error 6.
Does anyone know of a solution to this? The iPhone is about 2 months out of warranty so i cant send it in without it costing $$$.

While you can use an iphone as a touch without a sim card in the phone, you cannot update or restore software without a valid sim card in the phone. The sim card need not be activated(with a carrier plan), but it must be present. So, are you trying to restore without a valid sim card? If so, that's your problem. You need a valid sim card, which is defined as a sim card from the carrier the phone was last locked to or used with. It need not be activated(with carrier plan), but it must be present.

IPhone Restore Fails with Error

I am having iPhone4, I upgraded it from firmware 4.1 to 5.1. iTunes Successfully upgraded the firmware but fails to restore my data. I am lost with everything, no contacts, no applications, no emails.
When I click on the Continue Restore button it immediately give error "An Error Occoured while restoring this iPhone (-50)"
Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated, as i have lost v v v important business contacts.

iTunes usually makes a backup of all the information of your iPhone (excluding contacts) before updating the iOS. Restore your iPhone from the backup.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes, right click on your phone's name and select "restore from backup".

Contacts are not a part of backup (only some information is backed up to save your call list and favourites). Contacts are synced with a compatible programme on your computer (Outlook, Windows Contacts, Addressbook etc) or with a cloud service (iCloud, Yahoo, Google). Sync back the contacts from which ever programme you were syncing them with.

The only options you have are to fork over the $99 to become a developer or find somebody who is a developer and who is willing to add your phone to their developer list.
And no you cannot downgrade to 3.1.3...you made the decision to update to a beta version and now much find a way out.
Sorry this sounds harsh but you now have a brick unless you pursue one of the two options I stated above.

IPhone 5 firmware restore failed (unknown error 1)

I updated my iPhone 5 from ISO 6.1.2 to 7.1.1 via iTunes by restoring and it was working fine but when 7.1.2 update came n I was trying to install via wifi, it failed a lot of times. so I connect my iphone to iTunes n tried by restore iphone, during this my phone was restated and it never showed up on iTunes so I disconnect iphone, since that time iphone is in recovey mode, now whenever I connects iphone to iTunes, a msg pop up on iTunes "iTunes detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." so I click on and then I click on restore and update. it goes for Extracting Software> Restoring iPhone software>verifying iPhone software>restoring iPhone firmware but never completes, a msg comes on iTunes iPhone restore failed. unknown error(1) I does the same like I m putting a link from someone for iphone 5s.

Check for hardware issues
Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

Thanks for your reply Michalo. I am in India and here Apple care does not work on Sundays. I have been without my phone for the entire day. Perhaps tomorrow will bring some respite. There is not solution to "error (-1)" on any forum it seems. I found one forum which suggested use of Tiny Umbrella. Any idea about that?

My iPhone 3GS is getting the same error. I've called Apple a bunch of times, and they won't get back to me. I'm searching through discussions to figure out a solution.

New iphone, restore backup failed with - An error occurred. How do I fix this?

Have tried to follow the transfer instructions but it does not seem to work.
Everytime I choose to restore a backup when I set up / activate the new iphone, it fails after some 10-12 seconds with the message that it could not restore because an error occurred.
It says nothing else about what the error is and I have to start the set up / activation all over.
So how so I solve this?
Other 'answers' says how to transfer, but it does not work for me and the answers I have found does not address this issue.

Search the error code in the support search and you should find something that will walk you through it, but without an error code it's a little hard to know what you're talking about

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

I Plugged my Iphone into the computer to get music onto it. It came up with 'set phone up as new IPhone or Restore from other device (with a list of all other devices) I accidentely pressed the other device option. The phone was jailbroken. That's what that error indicates. You can't get help here. You can't get help from Apple.
Try Google.
