Iphone screen goes black

When placing or receiving a phone call, my screen will often go black and I cannot get the touchpad or screen to come back on, I press the reset button but lose my call.
Also, on several occaissons, I have had the other party not hear my voice but I can hear them (without the headset plugged in).
Has anyone else experienced these issues?

Only Apple can make that determination and they aren't going to tell any of us. When you send it in, they might repair yours, or send a replacement which might be new, or refurbished. You would not even have a way of knowing that.
At either rate, they won't tell you in advance how they will resolve your problem.
The one thing they WILL do is have your reset your phone....and if that doesn't work, they will ask you to Restore your phone....and if that doesn't work, then they will assist you with returning for repair (or replacement, totally up to them)...
That is why I said, to begin with, make sure you reset, then restore before turning to repair. It will save you an hour on the phone with support just restoring your phone anyway, or at the Genius Bar, where the first thing they will do is make sure all your software/firmware is updated and then do a restore before they do any kind of repair or return procedure.

Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

I know that and it is not the problem nor an explanation.
Here is the issue I am referring to:
When someone calls, still during the conversation when I remove the phone from my ear (in order to access the key pad, for example), or in order to hand up, the screen goes black and the phone freezes.
In other words I cannot terminate the call or access the keys,as I remove the phone away from my ear it shuts down.
Any help???

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these steps in order until the issue is resolved.

Check out the iPhone Hardware troubleshooting guide in the Display section. It has a section for not having any backlight. If you cannot get it resolved, there are some links towards the bottom of the article for further options when it cannot be resolved.

Pressing the Home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button together until you see the Apple logo and then release is called a reset.
If no change after a reset, the next step is restoring your iPhone.

Welcome to the Forums.
The flickering issue maybe due to a bad LCD cable or in some cases, a faulty GPU (the GPU is integrated to the CPU, and the CPU is soldered to the motherboard).
If there's still no image on the screen even after connecting an external display then you likely have a bad GPU.
In this case, I recommend you contact support for service (and also to see if there's a consideration that can be done on the warranty repair).

IPhone 3G screen goes black in Safari, SMS and Mail (sensor not covered!)

This my second 3G iPhone. I took the last one in for the same issue.
I did not use the back-up in iTunes in case there was a corrupt preference issue.
I did upgrade/reinstall and there are still issues.
The screen goes black as if I have locked the phone with the on/off button.
To get back into the phone I have to hit the on/off button twice, slide the slider and continue where I left off.
This is not because I haven't touched the phone for a time. This is right in the middle of typing in SMS, email, password on a website. It seems to happen when i am interacting with a site using the keyboard but i might be wrong.
I am going to update to the firmware that came out today.

I am having the same problem and have since I did the software update. I have the old iPhone is the only difference. It just goes black right in the middle of a text or surfing the web, even changing settings. I have also had a problem when done with a call and i go to hit end call but the screen never comes back to give me that option. I have had a few instances lately where someone calls and i slide the slider to pick it up and it just goes black but still vibrates and rings....its very very annoying.

To solve most of iPhone os problems you can perform a soft reset which will not change anything inside the phone
It'll simply remove the errors
To do that
1.Hold power button for 5 seconds
2.without releasing power button press home button and keep both pressed till the apple logo comes up
3.Now release both buttons
Your phone has now been reset

When I turn on my iPhone 4S the apple logo pops up for a split second then the screen goes black but the phone itselfs boots up just fine???

I tried replacing the screen with no luck. The same thing happened with the new screen. I replaced the backlight coil and the backlight ic and still have the issue. I don't know what else could be the problem. If the battery is completely dead and I plug it in the "charging battery" symbol shows just fine during the entire time it is charging, but as soon as it starts to boot up the apple logo shows for a split second then the screen goes black. The rest of the phone still boots up just fine. I can use SIRI, press the lock button like I'm about to use my phone and slide my thumb across where the "slide to unlock" would normally be and it will make the unlock noise just no picture display. I am pretty tech savvy when it comes to repairs and all of the connections look fine, replaced backlight coil and ic, replaced LCD/digitizer, tried a restore, tried a DFU restore, multiple hard resets, but I am at a loss as to where to go from here. I had dropped the phone and put a minor crack in the screen but the phone worked just fine for a couple months after before this started to happen. The phone is still under apple warranty but apple won't cover it because Apple is stating that it is "caused by the crack in the screen." But being a repair technician I know that is not the case... Good one apple. So I took it upon myself to try to determine the REAL problem. Anyone with a little more knowledge have any ideas? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

Yes, I understand that. But The screen issue is not a result of user damage. The phone was not dropped when the screen got cracked. My daughter was standing in a chair at the table and dropped one of her toys onto the bottom of the phone and cracked it right by the home button. (Nowhere near the LCD/digitizer flex cables, connections, or logic board components) then a few months later my phone had died, I plugged it in, it showed it was charging, then Apple logo disappeared and screen didn't work. AFTER contacting Apple about the issue and them telling me that it "is a result of the very minimal crack to the sheet of glass that has no relation to the LCD or Digitizer and that the warranty does not cover it I had taken it upon myself to change the LCD/digitizer to no avail, as well as backlight ic and backlight coil to no avail. But how do I go about letting Apple know that it is in fact NOT due to the cracked screen nor is it due to the flex cable connections? I can't. So the lady that works the call center phones trying to "convince" me that she knows what she is talking about and "convince" me that it is from the cracked screen I have to take her word because I can't show Apple that its not because of that without paying them $199 to fix the screen in which case they will just send me a new phone rather than fix the faulty hardware under warranty.

IPhone 3GS works fine, unless I the screen goes black after no use. Then I'm stuck on the white screen until I reset the phone.

The title kind of sums it up. After having my 3GS for over a year without issue, it started acting up today. I had my phone on my desk at work, and had been checking my e-mail, news, and web intermittently throughout the morning. I set the phone down, in it's typical spot without issue. No dropping, no hits, no...nothing. Just set it on the desk and go about my work.
The next time I pick up the phone to use it, and hit the button, I'm greeted with an all-white screen. WTH? If I press and hold the home button the phone makes a "dunk" soud, like maybe I'm enabling the voice feature. Long story short, I can restart the phone, and reset the phone, and it's fine.
UNTIL the screen goes dark from inactivity. From that point on, it will ONLY come back in the full-white-screen mode UNTIL I reboot it again, in which case it's again functioning normally...UNTIL the screen goes black from inactivity. I can hear the phone make text-alert noises as texts come in, my e-mail continues to download regularly, etc. But it stays stuck in this white screen anytime the battery saver turns the screen black.
Any ideas on this?

So, I've received and installed a replacement digitizer screen / component. The good news is that the digitizer works just fine! Screen swipes, finger tracking, etc are all great.
The bad news...is that it didn't fix my white screen issue. Same symptoms...everything works fine at boot. As long as I keep the screen from going dark, everything continues to work fine (rapidly consuming battery, of course). If, at any time, the screen goes dark (get a call, accidentally press the top button to shut down the screen, etc), the screen will only come back on as a white screen.
All touch components are working fine at this time. I've grown to remember where the "power down" swipe is located, so I press and hold the power down button, then swipe where I know the "power down" swipe is located. Phone will shut down.
Restart the phone, and repeat the process. Anyone have any other ideas?
