Iphone screen is black

what to do when Iphone screen went black, but the messages alerts are still coming through?

Hello Asia95,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
From what you describe it sounds like the phone is still on, and functioning except the screen is black so you cant see anything.
I would recommened these steps from the article iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802.
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
All the very best,
Sterling

  • Iphone screen went black

Randomly today, my iPhone 4 screen went black. I can receive calls and I see volume levels. Screen black.

I am seeing the same thing. After I enter my password, the screen goes black. I can still see the sound level, and I have the home button triple press to show the negative of the screen. So when I triple press it, the screen goes white with a black volume level displays. A hard reset fixes it, but it has happened 5 times in the last 3 days. Never happended before that. I'm hoping it coinsides with the latest software upgrade, and they can fix it.

Have you tried resetting your iPhone?

    Try these steps:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • My iPhone screen went black and won't turn back on.

Yesterday, my iPhone 4S screen went black and won't turn back on. So I tried just letting charge but after an hour nothing happened, so then I switched out the chargers and made sure the outlet I was using worked. But it still was black. Then I did a little research and I tried to put it into DFU mode but my power button has been broken for a few months now, so that didn;t work either. Then I tried restoring it, but my computer didn't recognize it!!! So then over night I let it rest with no power source connected to it. This morning I plugged it back into a power source and it showed the charging icon. I'm pretty that means it's still running, but I'm not an expert. PLEASE HELP!

If you have got a different USB Sync cable try to charge your iPhone with that as there are possibilities that your current USB cable or Power Adapter is not Charging your iPhone. If it still doesn't work make an appointment to Nearest Apple Genius Bar

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some ways to locate your serial number that might work for you even if the screen does not currently work:

  • HT1212 My  fully charged iPhone screen is black and not responding. what can I do to get it to work again? I have never syncd on iTunes. I connected to my laptop and iTunes app displays error msg saying phone is locked and unlock phone to connect.

My fully charged iPhone has a black screen and is not responding but has Siri and sound.  I connected to laptop and iTunes gives error msg indicating phone is locked and I to enter passcode. but I can't enter the passcode because the screen is black. I have never syncd with iTunes. What can I do to get my  phone back?

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Iphone screen is black when I remove the phone from my ear; can't end call

This is annoying! It doesn't happen all the time -- only some of the time but at least two times a day. The phone works but it just doesn't show the "end call" option -- or anything for that matter. I can turn it off when I have my headset on but if I don't have the headset on, I have to press the lock key on the top of the phone to get it to do anything. Then it locks, and then when I touch the on button at the bottom of the phone, it shows the display again. Anyone have any ideas or should I take it in?

    Hey jps42247,
Do you have a protective case on the iPhone? If its covering the Proximity sensor on the iPhone, the iPhone could think the phone is still being held up to your head. In that case the iPhone screen would remain locked so the call could not be ended accidentally.
If you don't have a case on the iPhone, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

  • My iphone screen turned black

I did a factory restore, held down power and siri button at same time , nothing. I have it plugged into i tunes, it is making a bing noise, the screen now is black around the edges, with a white center, siri is not working. PLEASE, help.
    Thank you.

update:  unplugged unresponsive Iphone 4 from wall.  Held HOME and POWER keys until apple showed.  When apple disappeared, let them both go.  Waited 5 minutes for it to restart itself.  It did not.  I powered it on the traditional way, not plugged in to anything.  Appears to be back to normal.  Now charging via my MBP.
There's no way this is the end of it, though.  My tech hunches are as good as a detective's nose for finding a perp.  This will not end well.  Here's the best thing, which I intend to present to Apple the next time I'm an hour away from home getting hustled in their store:
The attached image is a screenshot taken from my MBP in the parking lot of the mall where the Apple store is located.  Immediately after they gave me a "BRAND NEW" Iphone 4, I went to my car, cabled it up to my MBP, and began the restore process.  Here's what popped up.  Yeah, if this phone given to me was brand new Grizzly Adams had a beard.

  • My iphone screen is black and all the buttons are not working

The screen of my iPhone 4 suddenly went irresponsive and within a few seconds it went completely black. I tried to power it off and also tried the home button but nothing seems to be responding.
Incoming calls still ring out but I am not able to answer the calls and cannot see anything on the screen.
I connected it to my laptop, the iphone appears on "my computer" and I was able to see pictures and videos that are on the phone, however iTunes cannot detect the devise.
    Any help please?
    Thanks

    The phone is now working
