If your iPhone is unresponsive, try resetting it using this method:
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

The screen is frozen. I can see face time invites appearing on the screen and messages, even the alarm has come on this morning but the screen touch has gone and the sleep button only makes the screen request you 'slide to turn off' but then after plenty of time, the screen it's stuck on comes back - it wont bring the apple icon up.

Yesterday, I accidently turned my iPhone's brightness all the way down which caused the screen to go black. The phone is on because I can take screenshots and lock and unlock the lock screen. Also im getting notifications but cant see them. Ive tried everything from taking the battery out to calling Apple Customer Service, but the screen is still black. HELP!!?

Your phone may be out of battery or may have shut down due to overheating.
Try plugging it into its charger. If an empty battery with a charging symbol appears, you're good. Just let it charge for a few minutes.
If you were using your phone excessively and it is extremely hot, wait until it cools down then turn it on again. -

Same here. I have a 4S......2 new ones in the past week.....and it's STILL going black/black and will only turn on when it feels like it......very occassionally. The Genuis' first said a software glitch did something that did NOT fix it. Gave me a 2nd new phone within one week......still doing the same thing.

See if you can reset it: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first). If that fails, try to work through these troubleshooting steps: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/. I've just reset my iPhone 4s as I was planning to sell it on. After the normal stuff you see on a reset I've been left with a phone that just has the apple logo on the black screen and it appears to be frozen and wont do anything?? any ideas?
I've tried holding down top button and round button which makes it go off but as soon as you push top button again it comes back and again its frozen.

Depends, if you've synced with this iTunes, while that passcode was enabled, you won't be prompted to enter the passcode when connecting your phone. If you have not synced, while that passcode was enabled, you will. So, if you fall in the later, there is no way to do what you want.

Does the Vibrate/Mute switch make the iPhone vibrate? Does iTunes on computer recognize the iPhone? If not, then possibly the battery is faulty or worse. If yes, then the LCD Display is not working, possibly the connector came loose and simply needs to be pressed down to the logic board. Of the LCD Display is faulty and the front screen assembly needs to be replaced. Or worse. If there is Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send iPhone to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, Replacement iPhone is $199 or battery is $80 with Apple.

Try a Hard Reset.
- hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time
- the phone will turn off and the apple logo will appear
- once you see the apple logo release both buttons
