IPhone Security using Edge an/or WiFi

Hi.
I'm curious about security on the iPhone, particularly using the Mail app when using Edge and/or WiFi. Is Edge secure in a way that WiFi isn't? I don't know anything about WiFi, but understand that packets can be sniffed in transit, and anything sent in the clear can be compromised.
Any truth to that? And if so, is surfing the web and checking mail with Mail while out and about any safer with Edge? What about using the AIM client to chat?
Please understand that I'm not familiar with Edge and WiFi, just looking for some clarification.
Thx,
Scott

The most dangerous aspect of checking email is that most systems pass username and password in the clear. Especially if you are using an email client without SSL.
If you are on WiFi with no encryption (WPA, WEP) like at a starbucks, then the worst thing you could do is check email that has no SSL. You are throwing your Username and password on the wire. A person could take, go to Amazon and any other major website and say they forgot the password. Put in your email address and then watch your mailbox for a reset. Then they go to Amazon and order stuff with your credit card (that is on file).
The cell network, as mentioned above, is a little safer only because you don't have to worry about someone sitting in the same room monitoring your data usage.
Same rules apply to AIM, but if you don't have any stores or credit cards tied in to it, the worse that happens is someone watches your conversations and impersonates you.
These security issues are not limits of the iPhone, but email and AIM implementation by your providers.

you can try powering off your router, then your phone, then power up your router wait for the signals and then power up your phone and see if you can connect now.

Iphone 5 using data when connected to wifi

First thing you should do is check to make sure you are running the newest version of software. Go to settings>general>about
If its up to date check these:     (all of these may use cellular data)
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Use Cellular Data.
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data. Turn Push off. Change Fetch to Manually for testing.
Settings > Notifications. Turn off all notifications.
Settings > General > Cellular > Use Cellular data for: iCloud Documents, iTunes, FaceTime, Passbook Updates, Reading List.
Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > Use Cellular Data.
Setting > Podcasts > Use Cellular data. Also turn off Auto-Downloads.
Settings > Personal Hotspot. Turn Personal Hotspot off.
Settings > Safari > Use Cellular Data.
Settings > FaceTime > Use Cellular Data.
Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Turn off Location Services for testing.
Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Submit Automatically. Turn off Submit Automatically.

  • Received mysteries text regarding a code send from my own Iphone after using a unprotected public Wifi-hotspot

Today I received a text from my own Iphone number displayed as +28 18 xx xx that I have not written myself. It said I now had a new code thas was xxxx without specifying what for. Just before I got that text I had used a couple of different public wifi-hotspots. Should i be worried? After i searched Google all I could find was that it was a possibility your Iphone can be hacked on Wifi and the other option was that the code I received maybe was from the Verified SecureCode by Visa & Mastercard that I did sign up for a long time ago. If that was the case someone would be trying to use my credit card. If anyone could help me to disclose why i got the text from my own Iphone I would be very grateful.

  • IPhone 6  using Data when on Wifi

I upgraded to an iPhone 6+ a few weeks ago from an iPhone 5. Since then Ive been burning through data. Like 6GB in 2 weeks...ridiculous.
What really got me though happened this weekend. I was at my friends house and we decided to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I have it on my iCloud, so I played it from my phone and AirPlayed it to his Apple TV. I was connected to his wifi, which is an awesome 50mb/s fiber network. We played it through the Apple TV without any real problems. My phone says though that now my videos app used 1.4GB.
Ive seen a few posts about this happening on iOS8 and I just wanted to add my experience to the pot.
Ive turned Cellular Data off on the

I'm not having that problem but you may want to go to Settings > Cellular and look at the applications listed under "Use Cellular Data For." Each application that has used data will show the amount used since you last reset the statistics. The System Services section will show details of that data usage. Reviewing or resetting and then watching this may help you identify what is causing the problem.

  • How to transfer the .pdf files to iphone 3G using Windows Xp without Wifi.

    Hi,
I am unable to transfer the files (.pdf) to iphone 3G from my windows xp laptop.
I tried all the possibilities given in Google. Basically I dont have Wifi connectivity nor any network. Could you please tell me how to sync the files without any network. Example; the way others do with Nokia phones.
Please assist. Posts can be email to me at sacrashinkar (at) gmail (dot) com..
    regards,
    Sachin

That's a lie. There's plenty of software out there that lets you transfer files without a network connection - iPhoneBrowser and iPhone Explorer are two examples of such.
Incidentally, networking through USB is possible, albeit not often mentioned. The simplest way is to set up tethering, which will do most of the work for you. If that's not possible, then you'll have to do it manually (which is a real pain), BUT there are a few free utilities out there that are supposed to make the process much simpler (one I recently came across is usbgate.org, which is allegedly a one-click process).

  • IPhone stays on Edge even though secure wifi is present and connected

My phone connects to unsecure wifi fine. If I try and connect to a secure network, enter the correct ID, the phone says I'm connected and I get the wireless symbol for about a minuit before it switches back to Edge. Unsecure wifi networks no problem. The same thing happened on three different secure networks - connected and then switched to Edge? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a software issue with iPhone or am I missing something? We have numerous computers connected via the secure wireless network working fine. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
    iPhone

The Solution to the problem that you having is the following:
    "Go to" SETTINGS
    Wi-Fi
"Arrow over on the network which you are trying to connect"
    Forget this Network
    "Confirm" Forget Network
    "Go back to" Wi-Fi Networks
"Choose the network which you are trying to connect"
*"In the Security box arrow over and choose" WEP hex or ASCII
    "Now press" Enter Password
"Now enter your WEP Key etc..."
This should allow you to stay connected to a security protected network.

If I travel outside the US with an unlocked iphone and use a local SIM will I still receive iMessages sent to my US number when wifi is activated?

Ok, one of my problems is that when I arrive it will take me a few weeks to get a social security number and only t-mobile will give me a sim without a ssn - but edge for a few weeks will be better than no iPhone.
Unless someone out there can suggest an alternative?

  • Security using Verizon Hotspot & iPhone 5?

I need a secure connection to internet for banking, other financial actions. If I plug my iPhone 5 into the USB port on my laptop, then turn on the Hotspot and connect only with the Bluetooth/USB option (not wifi), would this be a secure connection that no one could see other than myself?
    Thanks for the help.

I have the Share Everything plan with 2 phones for my wife and myself. Mostly I am worried about banking when in hotels with public wifi.  My thought was I could do the banking on the iPhone 5 itself (via LTE connection) or I could use my computer connected via USB to the iPhone 5 Hotspot. I want to be sure those connections are sufficiently secure from prying eyes to do banking and financial transactions (buy/sell stock, etc). If I use the wifi connect to the iPhone 5 Hotspot, I understand you are saying that, too, would be sufficiently secure as long as the wifi password was created.  My understanding is that the password is a WPA2 secured connection. Is this correct?
Thanks for all replies. Both are very helpful.

My wife and I have an iphone each using one apple id. How do we stop phone contacts being deleted from one phone and then find it has been deleted from the other?
Also this works when one of us downloads an app it appears on the other iphone

You need to use separate iCloud accounts. This will mean that you can both have your own separate contracts and calendars and put an end to them being deleted by each other.
Whether or not you have a separate iTunes account, is up to you. If you have a separate iTunes accounts you will not be able to access the music, books, apps that have been purchased by the other. This may be exactly what you want, but it also means that you both may end up purchasing the same item.

Whether you can use your phone in this way is entirely the responsibility of your phone company/carrier.  You need to contact them to see if you can add tethering to your phone plan.  Be warned though that it could get rather expensive, so if you don't really need it, then do without, but in any instance, you need to contact your phone carrier.

  • TS1398 My iPhone 5s can no longer use Internet on a wifi network. I've reset everything, how can I roll back to iOS 7?

My iPhone 5s can no longer use Internet on a wifi network. I've reset everything, how can I roll back to iOS 7?
i Was considerinf buying a macbook pro, but am reconsidering spending such an amount of money on a company that can screw up such a basic function. I mean you can have your iOS 8 back if this is what it means, I don't want to use your health Kit app.

You cannot 'roll back' your iOS.  That's never been supported or allowed by Apple (with only one exception).
Use this article: iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections - Apple
It's not the iOS.  It may be a setting on your iPhone or the wi-fi network, or a hardware issue.  But it's not the iOS.  If it was, then everyone's iPhone 5S using the same iOS would not be working, and that's not the case.
    Troubleshoot your issue.

I have a verizon iphone 5c and I took out the SIM card just being curious and put it back in, now I can only use my phone on wifi and I can't use 4G or LTE strictly wifi. How can I fix this?

Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? If that doesn't work, try resetting the network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.
If that fails, you may possibly have damaged the SIM. Verizon will need to give you a new one.
    Best of luck.

Both the iPad Air and iPhone 5C use a nano-SIM. Physically, they will work, but your operator may have some restriction. You should check with them.
