IPhone Silent Switch Broke

The silent switch on my 8GB iPhone broke the other day. I was outside and I think it literally froze as it was hard to switch off of silent. Well I got the switch to move, but now it is loose. Not where it would fall off but moving it has no function. My iPhone is stuck on silent now. I am going to take it to the Apple Store/Genius Bar tomorrow. I'm just wondering if they'll replace it/fix it. I've dropped it a few times so it has a lot of scratches on the sides, the antenna cover is cracked (although not noticable unless looked at closely) and it has a few scratches on the screen. So will they replace it. I understand that at Apple they usually just replace the iPhone to leave the broken one to get refurbished if the iPhone requires any type of opening. And I think this requires opening because I can't take it off vibrate but the switch is still there not broken off. Before I heard a noise when I moved the switch, but now itz all loose. It stays where you can see half the red dot. So will they replace it?

If still under warranty, possibly, but depending on how bad the exterior damage is from being dropped may be a factor if the warranty is honored.
No one here can give you a definite yes or no regarding receiving an exchange under warranty, so the only one way to find out for certain is by going to the Apple Store.
Good luck!

  • IPhone silent switch acting, odd

    Hi
I purchased an iPhone 3GS in Febuary, 2010 (Approx. 8 months ago) and is still under the 1 year warranty. Recently my silent switch has been acting up for the past week often going from silent to ring in my pocket constantly buzzing. I dont have this problem when the phone is set to ring, only when it is switched to silent. Now it has gotten worse to the point where i will switch the phone to silent and it wont buzz or show the "Silent" logo but if i push up on it ever so slightly it will switch to silent but if i let go it will go back to ring.
What should i do? I treat the phone extremely careful and theres nothing wrong with it other than there being scratches on the back and i have already tried a hard reset and a software restore. (Software is OS 4.1 and has not been jailbroken)
Should i take it to an apple store? Would it get replaced/serviced?
    Thanks.

If it is bothering you, then make an appointment at the genius bar.
If it is defective then they will replace.

  • 4GB iPhone silent switch costs $199 to repair??

I just contacted Apple support about the non-functional silent switch on my 4GB iPhone. I was told that it will cost $199 (since I am out of Applecare) to send the phone in to repair the silent switch. I have been a long time Apple fan and this is the first time I feel that I am being taken advantage of.
It seems that Apple is pushing me to buy a new 3G model instead of servicing my existing phone. It's only 4 GB but it does everything I need it to and I'm very upset about this. If there are any Apple employees that would like to defend the cost of this repair feel free to reply.

    "Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPhone and it requires service for any other hardware failure, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Repair Service fee listed below. Your replacement iPhone may be new or refurbished.
    iPhone 3G Out-of-Warranty Service
    8GB $199
    16GB $299
    Original iPhone Out-of-Warranty Service
    4GB & 8GB $199
    16GB $249
*All fees in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes
An iPhone is eligible for Out-of-Warranty Service if it is no longer eligible for warranty service and is determined by Apple to be repairable. If Apple determines that an iPhone is not repairable, for example, if it has failed due to liquid damage or catastrophic damage where the iPhone has been disassembled into multiple pieces then Out-of-Warranty Service is not available and the iPhone will be returned."

  • IPhone 3G Silent Switch Broken

I have always been really careful with my phone just like any other gadget. Today the chrome top of my silent switch broke off when I switched it to silent. I have made a genius bar appointment for saturday at the local apple store and I hope that they will replace it. I paid $300 for this freakin' phone and I want it to work how it's supposed to. I have a light leak on the left side of the phone between the bezel and the glass and now the silent switch. They had better replace my phone or else I'm gunna raise the biggest scene they've ever seen anyone make if they say that they won't replace it. Yes I know that it's not the Genius' fault but the phone is under warranty and I've had it for a month and a half, I can see if I had dropped it or if it was a year old or somethin but after a month? Let me just say if you're an Apple Genius in St. Louis be ready to replace a black 16GB saturday. So what do you guys think, will they replace it, am I right to get upset if they won't. Please weigh in here.

Well yea I guess I got a little worked up. I guess cause it's apple I just expected it all to "just work" ya know? I woulda expected it from microsoft but not apple. And back on topic, the replacement went fine, walked in at my appointment, they looked at the phone for a couple seconds, wrote down my serial, and went in the back to get another one. It was all downhill after that. The first phone they pulled out refused to get 3G on 2.0.2 or 2.1, another swap. Next one refused to update, they tried several times to update it to 2.1 and it wouldn't. Final swap, updated in 10 minutes, activated in under 2 minutes. All is well, silent switch is much better, a lot smoother, much like the switch on my old first gen. Also there is no light leak. Overall I was pretty dissatisfied that it took THREE!! swaps to get one that worked as it should. If that doesnt say something about quality control nothing does. Although there was one genius that went way out of her way to try to make me as happy as possible, and she truly deserves a raise or promotion or something if she treats every customer like that. Final message: if you have a problem, go to the store, they will probably replace it, even if it takes severals swaps to get one that works.

  • Iphone 6 ring/silent switch not working

The ring/silent switch on the left side of my iphone 6 is stuck in silent mode and when I try to switch it into ring mode it doesn't stick and just springs back down. Anyone else having this issue?

I am experiencing the same problem with my new iPhone 6 (16 GB, White-Champagne / Sprint).
The switch doesn't work as it should. (Silent or Ring Modes)
When switched the button doesn't change any setting.
Meanwhile at rare moments (has happened 2 times now) the phone quickly alternates between silent & ring modes (like back & forth 5 cycles within seconds) without any activation of switch or any function.
On hold as we speak with Apple tech agent though (1800MYAPPLE), the agent is escalating the problem to her senior tech supervisor we (the agent and I) are waiting for him/her. Will update with outcome shortly.

  • HT201401 Is there a way to fix/override the silent switch on my iphone 4?

The silent switch on my phone doesn't do anything anymore. Sometimes my phone will vibrate randomly for prolonged periods of time as it switches itself on and off silent mode. Any advice is welcome.

Voicemail for the most part is handled by your cellular provider and not by your phone. The message that the caller receives is transmitted from your provider, where the message is stored, to the caller without involvement from your phone (other than the phone not answering the call because it is physically turned off, out of range, or the call is declined or unanswered). Your provider may have some options; Verizon has a feature named "Caller Dependent Greetings" but it is not available with iPhone Visual Voicemail.

  • IPhone ring/silent switch doesn't work.

Weird problem. My colleague has an iPhone 3G which worked fine for over a year. But recently it developed a problem, its ring/silent switch doesn't really do anything. Earlier it showed an image on the screen notifying the change of mode. But now nothing happens.
The phone was not dropped and was not exposed to any shock as it is permanently kept on his desk, he never takes it anywhere (yes, even I find that weird ).
What could be the problem? He's very worried. Can someone help please?

    hi there,
hope your problem is sorted but if not you could  try the following tip i posted to a similar question:
for anyone who's iphone buttons (hardware) are not working, there is something you could try w/out taking your phone apart.
go to settings --> general--> accessibility-->turn on assistive touch
this results in a small on screen touch activated version of your home button popping up on your screen - press it to see options such as : home. if you press it then select device, you will see further options such as mute. hope this helps.. would love to know how you go...
    good luck!

  • Silent switch on iphone 6 plus broken.

My silent switch on iphone 6 plus will no longer stay on silent. When I try to toggle the switch it just automatically moves back into the ring position. Has anyone else had this problem?

What difference does it make if they did? Have it serviced under your warranty.

  • IPhone 3GS silent switch doesn't silence the device

I recently dropped my iPhone 3GS from the desk in my bedroom. I checked to see if it worked fine, and it did. No scratches or nicks.
After that, I found that the Silent switch does not work. I flip it down and receive no notification that the phone is on silent, no on-screen & vibrate notification. So, I tested it by calling my phone from the home phone - and my iPhone 3GS rang and vibrated.
I checked the settings and I even did a reset. Should I do a full reset (Erase All Content and Settings option)?
    Thanks much.

If the switch was damaged with the drop, doubtful that restoring your iPhone with iTunes will resolve the problem,
No need to to erase all content and settings with the iPhone since doing so will require syncing your iPhone with iTunes afterwards, and is a secure erase which will take an hour or two.
You can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup - sync your iPhone with iTunes immediately before to update your iPhone's backup and any data that is kept synchronized. If no change after that, the next option is restoring your iPhone as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.

  • IPhone 4 silent switch crooked ( when partially moved ) and pretty easy to trigger

Hi. I just bought my new iPhone 4 black .. Right out of the box... My iPhone 4 had the silent switch a little bit "loose" I think..  When I partially "touch" with my nail.. The silent switch looks "crooked" .. And it goes back to its initial position .. When I do the same thing.  And I don't know if it's OCD.. But my silent switch it's PRETTY easy to trigger.. Not to easy.. But I saw some iPhone 4's which has a very sturdy silent switch.. And they needs a lot of pressure to change between "silent and loud" .  What's your oppinion? . I don't want it to break in the future... what do you think? . I'm to OCD or it's a major problem?
Sorry for my bad english.. btw

thx for replying... but it doesnt work... i turned the app on and made sure all vibrating stuff are on... then i tap ( or even smack ) the right hand corner ... its still not even vibrate once...
You may have to try this several times. If it fails to work after several attempts then I'd return it for one that works properly. There's been several threads regarding this procedure that has been successful including me. However it may not work in your case and a return is the only option. In fact I did return mine for other reasons though and then repurchased again for my wife and I in late July with absolutely no problems.
    Good Luck!

  • IPhone 3GS Silent Switch

I dropped my iPhone 3GS yesterday and the silent switch no longer works. I have had the iPhone for about 14 months now, so my warranty has expired. I don’t want to go paying ‘big money’ just for a silent switch.
Are there any apps out there which allow the mute on/off to be controlled?
Has anyone else had this issue? And fixed without apple support?
Really missing this function. Can anyone help???

No apps can do that. Google for iPhone repair in your area... there's likely one that can fix it.

  • Iphone ring/silent switch has stopped working

My iphone 3gs ring/silent switch has stopped working, whenever i switch it over to silent, it vibrates but then flickers between ring and silent and then ends up staying on ring, even when it is in the silent position. HELP!

Have you dropped your phone? Is it still under warranty? Does sound like a physical hardware issue, and I doubt anyone here can help further than telling you to make an appointment at a genius bar and get it fixed or replaced if allowed.

  • IPhone continuity - silent switch no effect on iPad when receiving calls

    Hi Apple,
I love continuity, especially for calls.
would be great to transfer the status of the silent switch on iphone to ipad/mac -> when iphone is on silent it also mutes ipad/mac, so when receiving calls the ipad/mac doesn't ring!
Or at least give the user to have an option in settings.
    thanks for looking into this.
