IPhone Snyc Problems - Corrupted files, icons won't stay put

My iPhone/iTunes is acting very screwy. I'll try to be brief.
For a while now every time I synced I would get an error saying three particular .mp3 files could not be copied because they were corrupted (although they play fine in iTunes). I would delete and reinstall those files in iTunes and I would still get the error message every sync. At the same time my iPhone hard drive was gradually filling up with content classified as "Other" to the point where I barely had room for a few songs and a movie before the iPhone was full.
So I did a complete wipe-and-reinstall of my iPhone. I thought it would fix things but now whenever I sync the home screen icons are acting goofy. No matter where I put the "Voice Memos" icon, after every sync it re-appears on my home screen. And the Weather icon is completely missing from the home screens, including the extra "overflow" home screens that you can only see in iTunes (although the app still shows up under a Spotlight search so I know its there). Also, now when I sync my music I get three NEW files that iTunes claims are corrupted and can't be synced--although the files play fine in iTunes. (Not the same three files as it was claiming before).
I've wasted a day and a half already trying to get my iPhone and iTunes to play nice. I'm about ready to chuck the iPhone out the window. Any help our suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tips. Rebooting doesn't work, have tried that.
Restoring the iPhone - ahhh what a lovely process apple have come up with here... Given I'm abroad, web access is transient at best via wifi. And I can't use the data connection with my chosen NZ provider as the phone won't stay unlocked!
Is there a way to restore the phone WITHOUT a web connection? Itunes insists it must download the software - which is a 250MB download on a platform which doesn't support resumable downloads (What is this, 1998!?)
I'm loath to do a hard restore (Turn Off, Hold Home Button down for 10 seconds, incase this breaks the phone even more).
I'll definately be having words with my local apple store when I get back - I've never ever had this much trouble doing something as simple as an unlock before.

  • The files that won't stay put...

I've had my powerbook for a good two months now, and have been having trouble keeping some of my data on my hard drive.
I'll load some songs onto iTunes, or install a program, and the next time I turn on my mac the data is gone. I have backups, thankfully, but this is getting really annoying...
I'd just like to know where all of this stuff is going, or at least how to stop it.

    Hi leeski241,
    Welcome to the forum.
Did you, by chance, rename your Home Directory (the Users folder that has a house picture on it)?
If you did, then follow the steps described here and all will be well again:

  • Mail icon won't stay in dock

Recently my mail icon removed itself from the dock. It may be a sync issue because it started when I began using my second laptop and trying to use the iCloud/mobile me sync.
My mail wasn't on the dock in #2 when I started it. I went through and tried to make everything equal to machine 1 but some programs are not the same. The next time I started machine 1, all of the dock items were equal to 2 so I reset the dock items on 1. When I went back to 2 they had reverted again.
Now my mail icon won't stay put on 1. It was removed (mysteriously) from the dock. Now when I put it back, it disappears within a few seconds. If I open mail and then click on "keep in dock" and close mail, it disappears, too.
I have reset my sync data to replace mobile me with info from machine 1. No luck.

I seem to have resolved the issue by moving mail from the applications folder to the desktop. Then dragged mail from desktop to the dock. It seems to have stayed in the dock.
I moved mail from the desktop back to the applications folder and all seems fine now.
I am going to leave the "sync dock, sync widgets" options off.

  • Icons won't stay in dock

Some icons won't stay in my dock when I drag them from the applications folder, but others will.
I have tried the following without success:
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.plist then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.db then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.DiskUtility.plist then done a restart
-used disc utility to repair permissions
-opened an application from the applications folder then whilst the icon is in the dock used right click.options/keep in dock
-deselected dock synchronisation from mobile me sync
None of these measures work though iPhoto & iTunes are not affected by the problem.
The only workaround I have found is to create an alias of an application and drag this to the dock where it does stay put.
    Can anyone suggest anything else?

  • Corrupt file error won't let me manage nano

I followed the 5 R's from the Apple website, but iTunes will not allow me to run the ipod updater and refuses even to show the ipod in its listing. It says "corrupt file /ipod-control/itunes run chkdsk". I actually ran a chkdsk from dos and that errors out saying the ipod_control/itunes is inaccessible. Is there an Apple program to just reformat the ipod withou having to "read" it, as the iTunes seems to? I did put on the latest iTunes (7.2).
    dell   Windows XP Pro

You could try a format of the iPod in Windows. A full format does a check and remap of bad sectors on the iPod hard drive, and you would need to restore the iPod as normal (using the iPod updater) afterward. This can also work when the iPod is recognized by the computer, but not by the updater.
First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and that "quick format" is not checked. Now select "format". It will take a while, but when that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater.
Also, see if either of these help.

  • Folders in Files Panel won't stay collapsed

There are 2 folders in my Files Panel which won't stay collapsed.  When I open Dreamweaver, they are expanded.  If I click the arrow next to them a few times they will eventually collapse, but then as soon as I open any other file or folder they re-expand themselves.  This first started back when I was using Dreamweaver CS5 with one folder which refused to collapse. A year later, I had updated to Dreamweaver CS6, and now had 2 folders which wouldn't stay collapsed. This morning I updated to Dreamweaver CC, and the same 2 folders still won't stay collapsed!
I searched the forum and found people with the same issue going back to 2007, but have yet to find any solution.  A few people recommended editing the Windows Registry - but I'm using the Mac version.  Several people said that they had some luck completely deleting the site settings and re-creating it - but that seems a bit extreme, plus several people said that it just started happening again later with another folder!
Does anyone have a permanent solution??
Here are a few of the other posts regarding this issue:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4418090

    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3596836
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/938616
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/809937
Also - just as an FYI.  If I rename the folder, it stops happening.  I can close and restart Dreamweaver and it stays collapsed. But, as soon as I rename the folder back - even if I do so after closing and reopening the program - it starts doing it again!!
Not sure if this is related either - but I saw in someone else's post that setting Related Files to Automatically, instead of Manual, fixed the problem.  I did try this, to no avail.  I even tried many times to turn off Related Files (by unchecking the Enable Related Files box in Preferences) but it keeps re-enabling itself!

As Jon Suggested , try rebuilding the site Cache
Allow me to Quote another DW user
First let me add here that I did find that when I upgraded to the new Creative Cloud version of DW and it imported my 12.0 site settings, the problem followed those settings into the 13.0 version.
Im on a Mac so these instructions would need to be taylored to the PC in regards to the location of the file referenced. And I am not sure if it's even the same file on the PC. So I can only speak for my experience on the Mac.
I've fixed my 12.0 version and my 13.0 version this way.
It was a corrupted "Site Prefs" file. I tried to fix it, but the entries where so mixed up that there was no way that was going to work. So I deleted the "Site Prefs" file and let DW recreate it.
In order to recreate the Site Prefs file, it meant loosing all of my site settings.
    To make things less painful...
Open DW and go to Manage Sites. Select all sites and do an export of all .ste files, with passwords and user names, into a temperary folder and close DW.
Now find file folder called "12.0" or 13.0" in the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/12.0 (13.0 for the cloud version)/Sites/ and rename it to "12.0_old" or whatever. (Note: you may need to Option-click the Go Menu in the Finder in order to get the Library choice to appear).
Reopen DW and it will recreate a new blank "Site Prefs" file. Go to "Manage Sites..." and click on "Import Site". Select all of the .ste files and import them.
DW will update the site's cache the first time you open each site and it might also ask you to give permission to access the password stored in you keychain. Choose "Always Allow" for each one.
That's it. Now my corrupted folder doesn't pop open every time I click on another folder.
    Mac OS 10.7.5
    DW CS6 (12.0 build 5861) &/or DW CC (13.0 build 6391)
As I said, this worked great for me. But use these steps at your own discretion.

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • Xmp sync problems--corrupted files?

I have been having lots of problems getting my xmp metadata sorted out. I am a new user to Lightroom, but I think I have figured out most of what I need successfully.
I use a variety of programs to edit the xmp data (mostly Lightroom and exiftool right now), so I know the importance of the "Automatically write XMP data to file setting" (ON in my case). After a few days (actually more like a week) of writing xmp data and then reading into (or synching folders in) Lightroom, I found a number of "metadata conflicts" in my catalog. Since these are basically impossible to fix for a large catalog (since there is no way to show the files that have conflicts), I started over and created a new catalog, and imported all 40,000+ images into it.
However, with my new catalog (with presumably no metadata conflicts), the first image that I tried to change the metadata on gave me a metadata conflict (presumably when Lightroom tried to save the xmp data after I changed it). This was a jpg file, so the metadata is being (or not being) written into the file. Reading the metadata from the file into Lightroom did not fix the problem. The Metadata Status field in the Lightroom Metadata panel says "Unknown" and clicking on the word "Unknown" brings up a panel saying "There was an unknown error while writing metadata to this photo. Retry?", and neither retrying the save nor importing the settings from disk resolves the conflict.
I think that the problem is that the jpeg is somehow corrupt, because if I save a copy in Photoshop, I can read and write the metadata in that copy. And, the copy has, I think, the same metadata as the original. (Of course, the image is probably imperceptibly degraded because I re-jpeg'd it).
There is no message in Console (I'm on Mac). (See PS)
I am worried that I have a number of files with this kind of problem, and I'd like to find the problem and fix it. Any ideas for a strategy to go about doing this? I guess I could "Save Metadata" for all files in my catalog (thus updating the file modified date for all 2 TB of data, and causing a massive backup issue), and then look through my catalog for those elusive exclamation points. But I'd like something better.
I have no idea how the jpeg could have gotten corrupted, but I do have an archived version that I could look at.
    Any thoughts on next steps?
    TIA
    Alan
PS--I did find this in my console output hundreds of times:
8/10/11 2:40:00 PM    Adobe Lightroom 3[404]    KeywordUsageStatistics    ERROR    Bad popularity entry for 1937630: occurrences is negative: -1
I don't know if that is related, but it worries me.

After moving LR3.5 and catalogs to a new computer running Windows 7 and LR from an XP system, I suddenly had 6400 files with exclamation points--failure to synch metadata or similar warnings on every file.  If I thought I had one without the error, if I clicked on it--there error showed up.    It was very frustrating and I was wondering if I was going to have to keep my old computer forever.
After I searched for a couple of hours and found that there have been several discussions concerning failures to sync xmp sidecar files and failures to write metadata on this forum and others.  Some of the postings had angry rants against Adobe.  On my system, it was not Adobe that should be blamed, it was Microsoft:
On one of the Adobe threads, I noticed a post that the person had multiple external drives and the problem did not show itself on one drive.  The person said that changing the permissions on the other hard drives solved the problem.   I tried this and it worked for me.  I did not have this problem with this same drive on my XP system.  I will try to find that other forum and thank the person who gave me the solution.

  • Downloading music to itunes problem/corrupt files please help!

I'm having problems with my music as most of the files I download from cd's onto itunes & ipod are corrupt. Through most songs a horrible screeching sound will occur on many occasions.
Not sure if this is my laptop or itunes causing this problem.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

Well, I'm happy we at least got the first problem solved.
I would suggest Restoring the iPod in iTunes, even if you have already done so, try again.
Next, go into My Computer, right-click the iPod and click Properties.
Is it possible that something like a Read Only box got checked? Or something like that?
I am sorry, but that's kinda all the help I can be, as I have never seen that problem before (although I am sure it is not just you). However, if you post back, I might be able to explain more, or maybe there is something you will notice that I do not know right now that will help.
If I was really no help, and no one else posts on this thread for a few days, I would suggest starting a new thread, as this one has been marked as Solved, therefore fewer people may view it.
I hope this helps! Post back!

  • Problem - Moving Files, Now Won't Stop

I started moving some folders or files, to another location.  But then asked the process to stop.  Now Mac OS shows me a window with "Stopping..." which had been running for days, without stopping.
Is there any way I can resolve this?  I have put my Mac to sleep since this started, and have not shut down the machine.
Other files on the Mac seem to be now not showing up in my finder, mainly the pictures in my images folder.  Will I end up losing the files?
Thanks a lot for the help!  I am really panicking on this one.

  • 10.4.7 networking problem - corrupt files when we save on the Xserve

I have upgrade 15 macs on my network from 10.3.9/10.4.4 to 10.4.7 - the Xserve was upgraded in 10.4.7 before. Now I have a lot of networks problems. When we save big files (quark Xpress 7, adobe illustrator CS, adobe photoshop), sometimes we lost our job, and we can't open the files (incorrect file format, postcript error in the illustrator file, lines in picture files...)
Sometimes, we can't import PDF in quark files, but, if we copy pdf files from the server to the desktop, xpress accept to import the pdf.
We also noted problems of refresh of the windows in the finder.
The Quark technical support is certain that the problem comes from the update 10.4.7 on the desktop computers, and suggest to wait until the 10.4.8 or to downgrad to 10.4.6.
Have you some infos about theses problems?
    Thanks for you infos

Chatted with Apple re above. The guy was very patient and as helpful as he could be. Here's what he suggested:
    At Terminal type:
sudo mdutil -s (drag the volume to here which enters the path)
You will be asked for your administrator password; enter this and press enter.
This commands returns the status of Indexing - namely my machine returned the following message-
    Status: Indexing Disabled
    Next I typed in:
sudo mdutil -i on (drag the volume to here which enters the path)
    Press Enter
    The following message is displayed:
    Indexing enabled for volume.
Since then the machine has been very active (fans and disk lights) which I hope is it indexing the volume.
Spotlight works when the specific folder is selected but not across the whole volume. Sherlock still does not find any files. I remain positive, knowing that indexing takes plenty of time.
    Thanks Apple Support for help
