Iphone software update server cannot be contacted

think i posted this in the wrong place
whoops!
here we go again:
I am trying to update my iphone software to 5.0.1, and everytime i do I get a message saying "Iphone software update server cannot be contacted -make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active and try again later"
This has been going on for weeks, and I've tried everything
I have turned off firewalls to the best of my knowledge
I did that thing where you go to the LAN tab and choose detect settings
I've downloaded the newest version of itunes
I'm not very technologically savvy, so if anyone can help me - i would need a pretty clear walk through of what to do
I really want to get this zombie jogging app, but my iphone needs to update before it can get on the phone

iOS 4.3.3 doesnt have the "Update your Software" tab so you will need to go to itunes and back up your iphone then restore your iphone and it will download the latest iphone software (6.1.4) if you dont want 6.1.4 download your current version and hit shift on your keyboard (alt if your on Mac I think) and click restore iphone and find your downloaded software 4.3.3 then download iOS 5 or 6 and do the samething after your phone boots up from restoring it to 4.3.3.

Update Server
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

There is no such thing as a "Factory Unlocked iPhone "
They are either locked to a carrier who may at some stage offer unlocking
or sold direct to a user by Apple (from their own Stores or online .)
Those iPhones are NOT locked
Where did you get your iPhone

When I try to update or restore any iPod touch on my MacBook (year 2007, 10.6.8, iTunes 11.0.4), it puts the iPod into recovery mode and gives an error: "The iPod "iPod" cannot be restored at this time because the iPod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable." This happens after it extracts the software and says "Verifying update with Apple." This is the iPhone for the Enterprise forum... there is nothing about the issue that appears to apply to using an iPhone in an Enterprise (corporate) environment.

Windows user? Maybe you should check your HOSTS file to make sure nothing is stopping you from contacting Apple's servers - though if you're not looking to update you might still be out of luck. Also, maybe disable IP blacklist apps like PeerBlock just in case they're interfering with your connection to Apple.
