IPhone staying in restore mode for an hour? Updating to 4.2 from 4.1.2.

My iphone 3GS has been staying in the restore loading screen for a good hour now and this is the 8th time i have had to restart the entire process. i have disconnected the cable, restarted computer and restarted the phone. now my phone is stuck in DFU mode because it cannot complete the restore. i cannot get iTunes to complete the restore and sometimes i wait overnight for the restore to be completed.

I'm in similar situation.....
My home set up is
1office PC (hard wired to sky broadband) 1 working laptop and my iphone 3g ( via wifi to braodband) i regularly doc and sync my phone with the office PC but not done since begin dec before I updated PC and laptop software.
I also have linked to ITunes 1x ipod nano 2nd gen (daughters) and 1 x Ipod touch 3rd gen (other daughter)
On thurs 30th decided to sync with PC but as it bombed out updated the ipod nano this was left overnight.... it sorted out the music download one happy daughter with xmas present (recycling my old one I found in cupboard)
Have been downloading 12 days of christmas so when tried to update on Fri 31st it said it would take 14 mins so i walked away ... forgot and returned to see it had not done it again after 3 hours!!! Meanwhile though I would get mobile me to sync correctly with PC after spending 6 hours updating my contacts 600 on the PC manually to get mobile me to be overwritten sucess. So I tried to update again this time said 19 mins then decided to restore.
After sussing how to transfer my downloaded items from 12day of christmas from phone I took the plunge to restore phone I attempted it 3 times over the next 8 hours Before my last attempt to restore I resinstalled an repaired ITunes then finally having decided to be patient I sat and watched for the full 24 mins to down load.
Watched it track accross the screen after doing a back up then at point of reinstall or what ever it does it stopped and gave me an error3259 stating my internet link had failed iphone was plugged in... and charging and intermittantly syncing during the day so I had no problems with that side Just very confused about internet link breaking as it was hardwired and safari & google chrome were working perfectly
Apple Tech guys please sort out this softwate update or at least tell me where the download is stored so I can manually install it to update my phone as 'm loosing phone no through sync regualarly
Ps My background is was an NHS pharmacy computer systems manager for 17 years so I do understand a bit about installing software on various platforms
any ideas would be appreciated

    Hi Lauren,
When troubleshooting power issues, we want to make sure we have followed all steps outlined in the following article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    - Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    - Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion.
    Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    - Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    - After at least 15 minutes, if:
                   - The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
                   - The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
                   - Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    - If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
                   - If the display turns on, go to step 4.
                   - If the display remains black, go to next step.
    - Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to
restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    - If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • My Iphone is in Restore Mode and I can't get it back to functional.

On Friday, I plugged my Iphone into my computer at work and it asked me to update the software. Well, my Iphone was set- up on my home computer but like an idiot I updated it at work now my Iphone is in restore mode and I can't get it working again. I removed all the Itunes programs and Safari and then reistalled them but it did not work. Can anyone tell me what to try now? I'm a step from going into an Apple Store for help.

    Thank you, King_Penquin,
It worked! I have just copied and pasted your instructions to a Word doc to keep for future reference in case it happens again.  I am so grateful for you and others who post answers to our questions.  By doing so, you become a blessing to those of us who are beginning to get frustrated because of the waste of time, or in some cases, maybe loss of work.
    Bless you, and Merry Christmas

Have tried repeatedly and end up shutting down instead of "sleeping:.

Hello, most usually it's some USB device causing that, but...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • My iPhone 4s iOS 7.0.4 will not update music or apps from iTunes 11.1.3.  this was true of my pc and the new MacPro.

My iphone 4s ios 7/0/4 will not update music or apps from itunes 11.1.3.  this was true with my pc since ios 7.0.3 even with update 7.0.4 and now continues with my new MacPro also runing itunes 11.1.3.   as most state in previous threads, syncs all non itunes related data with no issue and appears to work correctly on itunes data but then hangs on the last step of updating until it times out.  i have tried marking specific music to transfer, setting up new playlist, deleting some old playlist on phone but stopped short of restoring my phone back to new due to the amount of non itunes data that i will lose.  The itunes setup on the macpro was completely with the download of all music from a previous external backup and the creation of new playlist - on the first sync with existing phone it did ask to overwrite all phone itunes data with macpro itunes data which i did accept - no different result - no changes on phone.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Original iPhone randomly enters restore mode on 2.2

    Hello All,
I have an original iPhone running on the 2.2 firmware which will randomly enter into restore mode. I have iTunes 8.0.2.20, the iPhone is an 8GB model. I have tried both restoring my data from a backup and setting up the phone as a new phone, either way it seems to drop back into restore mode. The timing of this seems to be random. Sometimes the phone lasts for a few days and others a few hours before it drops into restore mode. I have the sync cable plugged directly into a USB port on the motherboard, not one of the expansion ports on the case.
Any info or thoughts would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

  • I tried to soft reset my ipod touch with the top button and the screen button.  it turned off and went to the blue screen with the apple.  now it won't do anything-it has stayed on that scren for 4 hours now.  does anyone know how i can fix this?

i tried to soft reset my ipod touch with the top button and the screen button.  it turned off and then went to the blue screen with the apple like it should.  however, it now just stays on that screen.  it has a sort of clock looking thing at the bottom of the apple that does not move either.  it has stayed on this screen for over 4 hours.  i also can not hard reset it in itunes.  i am not really goood at this sort of thing.  does anyone have this problem or a possible solution?  thanks

    See Here for
    Frozen or unresponsive iPod touch
    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
    Restart..  Reset..  Restore...
Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the iPod Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... (But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the iPod On...
If that does not help... See Here:
