IPhone storage available vs used

I have 16 gb iPhone 4S. Under storage it shows I have used 10.9 gb and have free 2.7 gb. This only adds up to 13.6gb total. Where is the rest of my gb and why would the amt be off like that?

Because you only had about 13.6GB's of usable space available to begin with. The answer has to do with electronic devices and their operating systems using a different definition of "gigabyte" ("GB") than that of the manufacturer's of storage devices such as memory cards and hard drives use. When manufacturers of such devices say "GB", they mean what is called a "decimal gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes. When your device's operating system describes the capacity of the storage, they use what is called a "binary gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes. Because of this discrepancy, a device has less binary gigabytes than decimal gigabytes. It turns out that a decimal gigabyte is approximately 93% the size of a binary gigabyte, so if your iphone is 16 decimal gigabytes, your operating system will report that it is approximately: 16 * 0.93 = 14.8 binary gigabytes, minus what the OS occupies, equals 13.6GB's.

  • HT204570 iCloud photo library taking up all available iPhone storage

Recently upgraded from iPhoto to iCloud Photo library.  It's great, except that it's now taken up all available storage space on my iPhone and I can't even take additional pictures on it.  If I delete any pics from my iPhone (to try and free up space), it deletes them from my library and from all of my other devices (Mac mini, MBP, iPad, etc.).  I don't want to get rid of the photos, I just want to remove some from the iPhone so that I can actually use the phone.  My iCloud Photo library is rather large, and I pay for additional iCloud storage just to be able to accommodate it, but understandably so, my iPhone storage can't accommodate the full library, and I wouldn't expect it to, either.

I've had a similar problem.  For me the best solution is to save the photos to my Mac, and then delete them from my phone.  This does not however solve the problem with not wanting them to be gone on other devices.  Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to exclude a device from having the photo deleted off of it (Wink*Wink* Apple- iOS 9/OS X 10.11? Cough*Cough*).  Anyway as for saving space, for me, if I turn off iCloud photo library and then turn it back on again, it will make a lot of space open up.  Note: still not total space.  I assume that you have a lot of music/photos/apps or something because I have this problem on my 16 GB iPhone, but I don't see how a 64 Gb iPhone can accidentally run out of room.  In conclusion, try turning off iCloud Photo Library on and off again.  This is my best solution, and it works for me pretty well.  Anyway, I hope this helped.

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

  • IPhone 6 Plus 16b storage available 0 bytes

    Hello everybody,
i'm writing because it's 3 months now that i'm trying to find out (restoring, reseting my phone),
WHY even if my phone is empty/clean of apps, videos, photos, on the iTunes says that:
    a) my photos are using 188,9MB of space;
    b) my Documents and Data are using 48,9MB of space;
    c) my """""OTHERS"""""!!!!!!!!!! are using 9,16GB of space?????????
    d) free space 826,1MB,
and on the Usage of my phone says that the Used space is 11,6BG and the Available space 0 bytes?
Does someone knows what is that OTHER and how can i clean my phone?

The storage is occupied with iOS and system files. To free up some space you may try to reset and restore your device.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
Press and hold on the Home button
Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.
Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings
If this does not help, try these steps. Note that this may erase the data from your computer.
You need to restore your device to factory settings.
Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.
If this does not help, try the recovery mode. Turn your device off, then plug it to your computer with the home button pressed. You will need to have iTunes installed on this computer. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the iTunes logo on the screen of your iPhone. After that on your computer you should see the iTunes window saying your iPhone needs to be restored to factory settings. Click on the restore button.

i have a i phone 5 that we are getting a message not enough storage this Iphone cannot be backed up beacause there is not enough Icloud storage available.  But we cannot go to settings or close out the message . i cannot power off the phone or anthing. How do i clear this off the phone.

First, press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple icon appears.
The problem could be that you don't have enough storage on the device itself, not on iCloud.  Go to Settings>General>Usage to see how much "Storage" you have available on the device.  Farther down the list is the available storage on iCloud.
    Also check:
Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage; there, tap the device you need info on and the resulting screen lists Backup Options with which apps store data on iCloud as well.  Tap Show All Apps to get the complete list of apps and MB used for backup storage.
A device needs many MB of storage in order to perform a backup to iCloud.

  • Available iPhone storage shown is far lower on itunes (843 mB) than on iphone (5.4 gB)

    Hello,
I am using an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1.2 with a Mac Laptop with OS 10.6.8 using iTunes 11.4 (18).  I am using iCloud Photo Library for my photos.
I unsuccessfully tried to sync selected songs from my iTunes library (on the Mac) with my iPhone.  iTunes (Mac) says there is insufficient space to do so, however the available storage on my iPhone says there is plenty of space (in Settings/General/Usage/Storage).
Specifically, my iTunes (Mac) storage bar of my iPhone says I am using 7.16 gB for 1815 photos, and the available space is 843 mB :
In contrast, my iPhone says I have used only 921 mB for Photos (6.7 gB in total), and 5.4 gB is available:
Is this discrepancy the result of an error in the iPhone software or in iTunes?  How much space is actually available on my iPhone?
I would like to be able to free up more space for more of my iTunes library (audio). I was hoping to do this with iCloud photo library, but this appears not to have worked. Any ideas?  Thanks!

  • TS3992 "This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available" message

I do get the "This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available" message since a couple of days. I do have 3 backups for iOS devices totaling 3 GB + Mail w/ 2 GB - now what? I vaguely remember having reserved part of the 50 GB for backups under the old .me account - could that still be in place? Thx for any help

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have to delete things from your iCloud account. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Manage Storage, select the app from what you want to delete data, and delete the things you want. Another possibility you have is to purchase more storage.
As you are referring to "the old .me account", it looks like you had that storage with an older Apple ID, so you can't use this storage with the new Apple ID you are using with iCloud

  • HT1766 Everytime I try to back up my Iphone it stops and tells me that there is not enough icloud storage available

Everytime that I try to back up my iphone to icloud there is a message that appears that reads "This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available." So my phone has never been backed up, any suggestions?

Yes Mathmom815...I am having same problem!  I noticed all Posts on the Apple Community regarding this issue just "STOP" when we respond that we have adjusted all settings and that there is enough storage available.
One different Post I read mentioned "Mail & Texts" also take up space....and I noticed my mail app is downloading OLD mail, and it sometimes says I have hundreds of email...then sometimes it says I have only a few.  I have adjusted my mail settings and are now downloading NO email.  Is there a glitch with the 4s that stores excessive email?  Is this "glitch" holding up storage space?  IF so, where on the phone does it tell you how much space the Mail & Texts are using?
    HELP....

  • TS3992 I recently dropped my ipad and had to get a new one.  I backed up the first I pad and used the icloud to reload all my data on my new ipad.  Now when I go to backup the new ipad it says I cannot because I don't have enough ICloud storage available.

I recently dropped my ipad and had to get a new one.  I backed up the first I pad and used the icloud to reload all my data on my new ipad.  Now when I go to backup the new ipad it says I cannot because I don't have enough ICloud storage available.

If you can't get the password correct, you CANNOT restore from that backup.
However, if you've been using your phone as recommended by Apple, there should be minimal data loss.
Your iTunes library is on your computer, so you can synch all your apps, music, movies, ringtones, etc, on to your new phone.
Similarly, contacts should be synched to Address Book, Outlook, or a cloud service for you to easily synch back to your new phone.
Pictures taken from your old phone and not synched to your computer are lost, but you would have been synching those photos to your computer frequently as recommended.  Other photos that you synch TO your iPhone are still on your computer.
You won't be able to get text messages back.

My iPhone 5 won't use 3G when 4G isn't available. I live in the middle of nowhere, but with my iPhone 4 I could use the Internet on 3G just fine without needing wifi. Now I don't get anything unless I'm on wifi. My phone says '4G' but then says 'could not activate cellular data' or gives me the gray google failed because you dont have internet page. I have AT&T if that matters. I just want to get Internet and my email like I used to be able to. Slow 3G is fine with me, but I need it to work on my iPhone 5. Can anyone help me?

Oh ok, thank you! So I just got a bum SIM card when I bought this phone or something?

  • TS3992 My iphone will not back up with iCloud. it keeps popping up a push notification telling me that i do not have enough storage available for the back up. but in my settings and storage it tells me i have 2.8 GB of 5 GB free space, help!?

My iphone 4s will not back up with iCloud. it tells me i dont have enough iCloud storage available, that i can manage my storage in my settings, when i click the settings it tells me i have 2.8 GB free space out of 5 GB. i dont know what to do about this problem. it hasnt been backed up in 3 weeks. and if i still have icloud space avaliable on my phone i do not need to purchase more. i have very few aps backed up on my icloud. i do not understand this help me please

Go to Settings>General>Usage and see how much space is available on your phone (listed at the very top).  The pop-up might be telling you that you don't have enough space on your phone to perform the backup, not that you don't have enough space in your iCloud acount to store the backup.

You're out of space.   Do you sync music to your phone?   If so, try syncing it over in 128kb which will save a lot of room.   Option is right in front of you in iTunes when you plug phone in.

    Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
After that: go to Settings - iCloud - Storage and backup - turn off the iCloud backup
and backup with iTunes from now on
