IPhone storage capacity

I look at my iTunes sync front page and see that I have 1.19 GB dedicated to songs and 1.21 GB dedicated to "other."
Exactly what is "other" and how do I get rid of those files? It's eating up all my space. Even though my phone is 8 GB, I still don't think it's right to have almost 3 GB already eaten up by "other" files.
BTW, I already cleared my cache, cookies, and history. So it's not that.
Thanks, P.
dell   Windows XP

i had this same issue. it seems to appear when i have a sketchy connection while syncing. that is, my usb cable to the dock was plugged in to a usb hub, which i think was not supplying enough power and thus the sync was interrupted a few times. i think if you unplug the phone from the computer while it is syncing it messes up some kind of file structure or something. i had 4 GB of other one time.
The way I resolved the problem was by restoring the iphone through itunes (and plugging the usb/dock cable directly into the iMac). After the restore, i had to resync (put everything back on the iphone) and manually reconfigure my Settings (ringtones, wifi on, world clock, favorites, etc.) but it seemed to solve the problem. I am only showing a few KB of other which makes way more sense.
Let me know if it works for you.

  • IPhone storage capacity - large "Other" category

Had 8GB of space taken up by 'Other' (the bar at the bottom of iTunes) and just did a full 'new phone' restore followed by a backup restore from iCloud. I also turned off PhotoStream. Other is now down to 900MB, which feels reasonable (I have quite a few documents on the phone, including iMovie and Garageband projects).
But how did it balloon to 8GB? That's about a third of the total capacity of my 32GB iPhone 5. My photostream should have been big, but not that big.
As near as I can tell it was some sort of temp file/buffer allotment, previously deleted projects and videos and photos were kind of caught in limbo. Apple needs to fix storage management for iOS, where it keeps space available if it's occupied by old, unwanted data.
Has anyone found a way of clearing Other and optimizing storage besides through restores and using third party file exploration utilities?
TL;DR - greatly reduced the size of 'Other' by doing a full restore then restoring from a backup.
I'll do an experiment and turn PhotoStream back on now, and see what happens in the next while.

"Other" is often inflated by corrupted files, perhaps there as a result of some faulty app.
The general way to clear "Other" (down to approx. 1GB) is to do a restore just as you have done.

  • My iPhone still has low storage capacity inspite of getting iTunes Match -

I recently got iTunes match  - hoping to get more storage space in my iPhone . My IPhone still shows 6.3 GB of stored music with still minimal capacity for further storage(550 MB)
Was I wrong in presuming I would get more storage capacity by putting my music on iTunes Match.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Even though you have iTunes Match, you will still need to delete music from the phone to create more space, although iTunes Match will automatically delete your least played music automatically when more space is needed on the phone.

Turning off automatic backup doesn't delete anything from your account, it only stops it from continuing to back up to iCloud.  If you want to reduce your iCloud storage, this article provides some suggestions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.

my iphone 4 has no more storage capacity, i have deleted apps but its not freeing up any memory, can anyone advise?

Well if you have 3 gigs of music that is taking up half right there. Pictures and videos also take up a lot of space as well. Another thing is texts are saved on the phone. Try deleting them but texts don't nomally take up a lot of space.

  • Storage capacity of iTunes on an iPhone

Before I buy and iPhone I would like to know what is the storage capacity of iTunes is on the iPhone, average # of songs. I have 2700 songs stored on my iPod; the AT&T store rep said the iphone wouldn't hold that much but he couldn't tell me what it would hold. Also I understand that music playback uses lots of battery, is this true?

What capacity iPhone are you considering?
My 32GB iPhone 3GS currently has 2552 songs on it and is nowhere near full. It also has 2 TV series and 5 movies, plus 71 applications and 209 photos with 7.7GB free.
It all depends on what quality and length these songs you have are, and the capacity of iPhone you get.
    On a 32GB iPhone you'll easily fit 2700 songs.
Music playback does not use lots of battery. Out of all the things the iPhone can do, music playback is possibly one of the least power hungry.

  • I have recently upgraded to an iphone 5. When trying to sync/ back up with my current i tunes settings. I get the message the it 1.6GB over the storage capacity. Although when syncing my i phone 4 (same size 16GB) i do not have any problems?

iOS uses more memory on the iPhone 5 than the iPhone 4 because there are quite a few more to iPhone 5. Therefore there will be less memory available on the 5. Reluctantly iOS 7, coming this fall, uses a bit less memory than iOS 6 so if you can do without a few apps until then you should be gravy!

  • Iphone 6 plus (16GB) storage capacity

    Hi guys.
How much storage is taken up by the operating system for ip6 plus?
I recently bought my ip6 plus and as soon as I activated the unit, I checked the capacity (Settings>>General>>About) and it says Capacity: 11.8 GB.
So the iOS is roughly 4++GB? Is it normal?
    Thanks!

    1. I have an iPod which has purchases synced with I tunes with an apple ID. I now have an iPad with a new ID for cloud. I have cloud storage capacity of 5gb which came with the iPad. How can I use one ID and store my existing music in cloud?

    HI Frostyfrog
CHeck out iTunes Match which has an annual fee of £21 or thereabouts. You can store a maximum of 25,000 songs there and they all become available on your other kit, iPhone, iPad and iPod. I know it works as I have over 23000 songs uploaded of which only a few we're bought through iTunes.
it works by comparing your music to the whole iTunes music dadata base so you access the same tunes that you could get from iTunes. If you have obscure stuff, it uploads your own music to the cloud as a copy.
I Find it incredible that on my iPhone with its 16gb memory I can view almost 200 gb of music (ie my 23000 songs) and play any of them. Anything I add to iTunes becomes available via the cloud fairly quickly from a few minutes or a little longer if adding a lot.
The first time you use it it will take quite a while to match your music if you have a lot, but after that it is all automatic. Read the stuff on the apple site. Your PC needs to be at least running Vista. I recommend it and at less than 50p a week it's good value.
    Good luck

  • HT201318 I upgraded my iCloud storage capacity for a higher tier and the device does not actually reflects said upgrade. How can this be resolved since my credit card was charged

I upgraded my Icloud storage capacity to a higher tier and my Iphone does not reflect the change although my credit card was charged and the device is nor properly backup. How can this be resolved?

It seems to take up to a couple of days for the upgrade to take hold, at least that's the experience of some users.  Give it 24 hours before contacting apple.

  • Ipod Touch showing incorrect storage capacity

I have an Ipod Touch 64 GB 5th Gen running iOS 8.2. I'm not certain when this issue occurred initially from the devices perspective - only when I first noticed it. The device was running 8.1.1.3 at the time. I was working with it in Itunes and clicked on the iPods summary screen to check for the iOS 8.2 update. I noticed the capacity of the device was showing as 56.62 GB. Available space was 43.19. The little memory symbol for the Ipod shows 64 GB. I was troubled by the capacity message. No help there. I ran the Update to iOS 8.2. Succesful. Still same capacity. Checked the iPod's Gerneral/About screen - Capacity listed 56.6 GB.
Have I lost access to 8 GB of capacity here? Should I reset the thing?
    Message was edited by: meteoricide
Total of Audio, Video and App Data is 14.12 GB.  Available shows 43.19 GB. That adds up to 57.31.GB. So there is a 700 K discrepancy. Total Photo Data happens to be 700 K. Just saying.

You only have 56.6 GB available to you. The difference between that and the 64 GB advertised capacity is taken up by:
The operating system since you can't use that for storage
and how GB is advertised and used/reported by the operating system. See:
How OS X and iOS report storage capacity - Apple Support
The update did not change anything except likely reducing the capacity by 10 or so MB since update typically add things and thus takes more storage for the operating system

  • Why did remaining storage capacity suddenly change from 3.5 GB to 0.5 G???

When I wanted to synchronise my iPhone 3G yesterday I suddenly recognised that the storage capacity had sunk from 3.5 GB to 0.5 GB. The yellow bar suddenly had become longer and indicated 3 GB more "OTHERS" (other programs) than before. I didn´t have installed anything so far. What can be the reason for this???
    Thanks for all your help!
    Klaus hausmann

I restored from a back up. All third party app data and settings seem to be preserved. HOWERVER, I went from 5.73 GB of OTHER Capacity data to 5.81 GB. So restore from a backup file is NOT a solution for this mess.
It seems that this is a file system problem in the OS that has persisted for years from the internet searches I've done.
I'm going to do a full restore, realizing that I will have to re-enter all the data that I did not want to lose. Some of the 3rd party apps have backup/restore import/export features. Some do not.
On a larger scale is this problem 1) acknowledged by Apple as a problem and 2) do they intend to actually solve it (i.e., not suggesting that I restore my phone from scratch destroying my data is actually a reasonable solution)?

  • IPhone storage size question

I am going to buy an iPhone sometime in the near future. At this time, since I have an iPod mini, I don't have any video in my library. I have roughly 700 songs which equates to 2.71 GB. I'm wondering if I need to get a 8 GB or 16 GB model. (Assuming extra space for my music collection to expand, one full movie and 5-10 music videos/TV shows, and all contact/text information). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is a user to user help forum only, so no one here knows the answer to this. If someone here is privileged to this information for some reason, they aren't allowed to say.
The only thing we know for relative certainty is a 3G iPhone will be released in the U.S. sometime this year. Apple has not indicated if the 3G iPhone will include any other hardware improvements. Before a 3G iPhone can be released in the U.S. requires another round of FCC approval, and it is my understanding that once it is approved by the FCC, this becomes public information. More than likely, Apple will want to make an announcement sometime before this occurs. Other than that, there is no way of knowing when. Apple certainly won't announce a price reduction of the existing models ahead of time (if they plan on doing so in conjunction with the release of the 3G iPhone) - prior to the 3G iPhone becoming available.
If you don't reside in an area where at&t has 3G network coverage - or in an area where at&t is expanding their 3G network coverage this year, or regularly travel to an area that does, it won't make any difference in regards to internet access over at&t's network. A 3G phone will connect to at&t's EDGE network when not in an area where at&t has 3G network coverage.
It is my understanding the current iPhone case is maxed out at 16GB. The iTouch has 32GB of storage capacity available but doesn't include a phone. If true, Apple must make some modification to the existing iPhone case in order to increase the storage capacity beyond 16GB, which is likely in the works.
Apple had a price cut recently I believe (at the end of January or February) on the 8GB iPhone - when the 16GB was released, so this is possible but no way of knowing for certain.
Purchasing an iPhone is similar to when purchasing a computer. If you need or want it now, get it now. There will always be a new and improved, or latest and greatest right around the corner. When the 3G iPhone is released, you can be the next generation iPhone will already be in the works.
There is also a good market for used iPhones. You can always sell your existing iPhone after purchasing a new and improved model to recover a good portion of your investment.
