Iphone Sync with Exchange Live Sync vs Local cacche

I have the Iphone and have been using the Sync with Exchange Server 2007 capabilities. It seems to me that rather than a sync and storing the data locally like Windows Mobile, it seems as if this is a live connection. The reason i say this is when I am in an area where I have no connection I am unable to move or delete an email until the connection is available. Also I once had a problem with my SSL cert so i had gone into the mail settings on the Iphone and then all my contacts, mail, etc... were gone from the phone. As soon as the SSL was fixed everything appeared back. With Windows Mobile it stored everything locally on the phone via a sync so you can do anything without a connection and then sync it afterward.
Is this the way it works how I described it. If so does anyone know a way to have the data stored on the Iphone itself?
Thanks,

Potentially calendar corruption.

iCloud does not sync which apps are installed on each device. Deleting an app off of one device has no effect on the others.

  • Contacts syncing then disappearing then resyncing on iPhone/iPad with Exchange Activesync 2010

Using iPhone 4S and iPad with 5.0.1 and Exchange 2010 activesync, user has about 1600 contacts, inbox is clear/empty.  ISSUE: After migrating client to Windows 7 and Exchange 2010, contacts on devices sync slowly but rarely get to the total number of 1600.  Gets to about 1000 contacts after 1hr of syncing, but sometimes resets after a few hundred contacts appearing. Randomly, the phone/ipad will stop syncing and all synced contacts disappear, then start resyncing again.  Have set up this users login on another iPhone 4S with 5.0.1 and same issue occurs. Is not device dependent nor is the reset timer consistent so we don't believe it's a timeout issue - reset time is random. Prior to migration, user didn't experience this issue.  We cleared the inbox to ensure large emails weren't causing a server timeout. Inbox and calendar appear synced. Have tried all combinations of push/fetch/# of mails etc, but sure it's not device or setup dependent.  It seems something in the new server combination with 5.0.1 or perhaps a "bad" contact that the server encounters will cause the contact list "reset" and begin resyncing.  Seems to be an isolated case in this enterprise server/space.  On the iPads/iPhones, other contacts or mailboxes are synced, no local contacts on iTunes, and Cloud is turned entirely off. Have checked contacts for "large" contacts - total contact list folder is < 20MB due to some card images.  Would appreciate any help or suggestions. Alan.

I have the same issue in my iPhone 4S (IOS 5.1.1). 3 others in my company have the same situation.
The problem started last Friday. I have not changed anything in my iPhone.
I tried turning off iCloud contacts sync, I tried recreate my Exchange account. I tried a complete reinstall.
After that I could do a full sync on Sunday.
On Monday I lost my contacts again and I could no longer do a full sync. I have 1200 contacts and I can not sync more than 400, the synchronization stops and all contacts disappear, then the resynchronization starts again.

  • Can I sync my iPhone calendar with exchange server AND ical on my mac ?

I have been happily using my iPhone synced with my Macbook over usb via iTunes.
I have contacts and iCal syncing. I have a number of 'calendars' set up in iCal which allow me to view separate aspects of home and work but they all exist within iCal. iPhone just treats these as colour coded appointments (different colour for each ical calendar)
I really like this set up.
However, I just changed jobs to a firm where they have a hosted outlook exchange set up and I need to use the exchange calendar for work appointments and showing my availability.
I have managed to setup my iPhone to work with the Exchange server for email as well as in apple Mail on my mac. This has all worked fine. However, I hesitated when iPhone asked if i wanted to sync my contacts and calendar. I said no as I was unsure if my private calendar/contacts would be uploaded to the public work area.
In fact it seems that this is the least of my worries:
As I have read on apple support for iPhone:
"Note that after configuring an Exchange ActiveSync account, all existing contact and calendar information on the iPhone or iPod touch is overwritten. Additionally, iTunes no longer syncs contacts and calendars with your desktop computer. You can still sync your iPhone or iPod touch wirelessly with MobileMe services."
So I am really pleased that I didn't let it sync those and wipe out my personal data if that is really true.
But now I am unsure how best to enable myself to view and update the work calendar on exchange.
Also it would be nice to see work contacts on my iPhone.
    Contacts
    - although i have said no to sync contacts with Exchange in fact it looks like I can get contacts ok - when i send email from the Exchange account on the phone , it searches Exchange contacts on the server as i type in the TO box.
    - also in Contacts on the iPhone I have a new group that has been created with the name of my Exchange account. The group appears to be blank when you go into it on the phone, but you can type in the search box and get contact details from the server just fine.
This seems workable for now for my purposes, although updating contacts is not going to be possible that way.
I'd like more info on that if poss but more importantly..
    Calendar
    - Unlike Contacts, no Calendar has been auto created for Exchange
    - Unlike contacts, I can't see how I can view or search or create an appointment in my Exchange calendar on the iPhone
What is the best solution to this problem - I presume lots of people face the same dilemma. My initial research suggests that there are multiple ways round this but all of them look like workarounds with various disavantages.
    Questions are
    - Can't I just set up Exchange as one of my calendars in ical?
    - Is it really true that I have to choose between syncing Exchange with work server OR syncing iCal with personal Macbook?
    - What is the best work around for this?
At the moment I am seriously considering getting a separate iPhone for work and have that sync with Exchange fully although that seems a bit drastic and does not solve the problem of seeing work and home appointments on the same calendar.

Can't I just set up Exchange as one of my calendars in ical?
Only if you're running Snow Leopard and your employer will allow access (different than iPhone/mobile device access, so most likely not), but not needed - keep reading.
Is it really true that I have to choose between syncing Exchange with work server OR syncing iCal with personal Macbook?
No. It was true, but with the v3.0 software that changed - you can now sync your Exchange contacts and calendar over the air, and your Address Book and iCal via iTunes over the docking cable.
What is the best work around for this?
None needed. When you set up the exchange account, and choose to turn on syncing of contacts and calendars, you will be prompted to remove all other data, or keep it on the iPhone. Choose the keep option. Note that in that case, your personal data will not be uploaded to the Exchange server - the iPhone keeps them separate (although you can choose to view them in a merged fashion).
I have this set up on my phone (Exchange calendar along side personal and other calendars from iCal). Same for contacts. Works great.

  • Syncing iPhone 4 with Exchange Server

Is there any way to synch an iPhone 4 with an Exchange Server contact list and calendar without overwriting all iPhone contacts and calendar entries.  In other words, "Can they be merged rather than overwritten?"

    Thanks Kilted Tim,
After an update of iTunes and the iOS, a good backup, and a leap of faith, I figured it out earlier this morning.
I had a bad experience when I first got my phone.  I did the same thing, syncing with the exchange server and it overwrote all of my contacts and calendar items.  It was a long three months trying to rebuild them all.  I'm glad to see this option was opened to users choice.

  • Iphone 3g with Exchange Activesync lackluster battery life

    Hey fellow IPhone people!
I just bought my first Iphone and just returned my first Blackberry Storm in favor of the IPhone's superior UI.
I use Exchange Activesync to synchronize my company email/contacts/calendar with my IPhone. It seems to work well, however, I have noticed that it checks for new mail about every 5 or so seconds while I am in the mail application.
I have the settings set to manual and push for the Fetch of mail, however, it still seems to check for mail every 5-10 seconds.
Given this the battery life is terrible. By mid day my battery is more than half gone and I charge it fully each evening.
Has anyone else experienced this who is actively running Exchange Activesync?
Can this be a settings issue on either the IPhone or on Exchange?
Please advise if you have specific experience with this.
I think either I have a faulty iPhone battery or ??
    Thanks !

There's something stuck in the Calendar sync...! You can check your phone's usage in the Setting-->General-->Usage... You will find the usage is abnormal high once you turn on Calendar sync with exchange. I have the same problem...2.1 didn't fix it. Now, the only thing I can do is turn on Calendar sync. But Contact and Email works fine. I found out this problem when I was doing a international travel...There's non-stop international data roaming communication between iPhone and Exchange which transmitted 100MB data in a morning, cost me US$2,000 !!!

  • IPhone Passcode with Exchange

We are using Exchange 2003 with certificate based authentication. We configure the iPhones and iPads using the Apple configuration utility. Everything is working very well, but I am having an issue understanding the settings on the passcode. I do understand that some settings are no longer available when syncing to Exchange and deploying via a profile. I do understand the difference between Auto Lock and Require Passcode after xx minutes. What I am having trouble with is how they work with Exchange. We do not have the Exchange sever configured to enforce password on device and have the inactivity time set. We use the settings of the mobile config file to set these.
When we configure the iPhone profiles we set the Auto Lock to 1 minute and the Require Passcode after 15 minutes. Things gives a windows of 16 minutes total before entering a passcode correct?
When the config profile gets installed, the Require Passcode always gets set to Immediately. Why? If I configure the profile to Require Passcode after 1 Hour, then the 1 hour setting does not get set on the phone but the 15 minute setting does. What am I missing here? The Auto Lock always gets set correctly.
Finally, does anyone know the maximum inactivity in minutes that can be set on the Exchange server if configured to enforce password on device for Exchange 2003 and how does that play against the iPhone even when deploying the profile? I have read that the maximum inactivity on the Exchange server actually matches the Auto Lock feature on the iPhone. How does this affect the Require Passcode setting on the iPhone and how do the 2 work together when using Exchange?
    Any help is appreciated.

Just a quick comment on this section:
"When the config profile gets installed, the Require Passcode always gets set to Immediately. Why? If I configure the profile to Require Passcode after 1 Hour, then the 1 hour setting does not get set on the phone but the 15 minute setting does. What am I missing here? The Auto Lock always gets set correctly."
I've set up a number of devices and have seen the same behavior as far as the require passcode timeout shift back to "immediately" even if the maximum allowed password is some value greater than that.  Not sure
why that is, but we've made it a part of our setup documentation  to manually shift the timeout back to the maximum allowed value before deploying the phone to users. We've used Exchange server 2007 policies to set the passcode timeout, though we use IPCU to setup connections to our Exchange server and to require encrypted iTunes backups.  I know that applying the Exchange server policy ( at least 2007) limits the set of choices for passcode lock timeout.  It seems like out of the box, the maximum value is 4 hours.  After applying the policy, the set of available options changes so that the maximum value which is available is the highest pre-policy value which is strictly lower than the policy requirement.  ( Hope I stated that correctly )

  • Integrating iPhone 3g with Exchange

Can anybody tell me how to sync an iPhone with Exchange? It seems simple, but it's not! I gave it all the correct info, still won't connect. Help!

    [email protected],
LenH is correct. The iPhone works the same as the Treo, and the same settings should apply. If the account can be accessed via the Treo or Outlook Web Access, then it should work just as well on the iPhone.
When you say it won't connect, are you getting an error message? Does it appear to authenticate fine initially, but nothing syncs? What specifically happens after you add the account?
Have you reviewed Apple's Enterprise Deployment Guide? This can be accessed here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Enterprise_DeploymentGuide.pdf
Here is another good basic article on Exchange setup from the iPhone, which includes other helpful, related articles at the bottom: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2480
If reviewing this documentation doesn't help, there are basic troubleshooting steps that can be taken on the iPhone, like resetting network settings or resetting all settings (both options can be found in Settings > General > Reset) and ultimately restoring the iPhone, setting it up as a new phone. More information on the restore process can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
    Hope this helps,

  • Using iPhone 3G with Exchange

I am having trouble connecting an iPhone 3G to Microsoft Exchange.
Whatever settings I try and use I get the following message when i go to view my inbox:
    "Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server failed."
I thought the options should be in following format:
    Email = [email protected]
Server = remote.domain.co.uk (this is a DNS forwarder to our router which passes through to the Exchange server)
    Domain = DOMAINNAME
Username = username used for domain
    password = domain password
    SSL = on
I can successfully browse to both https://remote.domain.co.uk/exchange and https://remote.domain.co.uk/oma on the iPhone using Safari and login using the same credentials i am trying to use with Mail settings.
I have a 3rd party SSL certificate installed for remote.domain.co.uk used above.
I am using Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange SP2, simple set-up with server behind router/firewall. I believe all relevant ports are open and pointing to server IP eg. 443, 25, 143, 993.
BTW I have managed to successfully connect the iPhone to Exchange using IMAP as explained elsewhere, however i want to make use of the new 'Push' facility with iPhone 3G! I am using latest iphone software (2.2?).
    Any help appreciated

try using SSL = off. If it works you will have to install certificate. Also have a look at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2185

  • Syncing iphone calendar with Windows Live Mail

Hi guys - I just upraded to Windows 7 and I'm looking to see if it's possible to sync the calendar with the Windows Live Mail calendar? I'm thinking the only option at this time is MS Outlook, but just thought I'd ask. I searched and read through 3 other similar questions on here but didn't find any answer, hence the new post. Thanks!

    Allan Sampson wrote:
Microsoft copied Google and now supports accessing a Hotmail or Windows Live Mail account as an Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail app. This provides Push access for received messages and for syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with the account on your iPhone.
For syncing calendar events direct with an application on your computer via the iTunes sync process, you need Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010.
I understand your second statement about the needing Outlook - but I'm trying to reconcile it with your first paragraph - there is support for calendar events over the air between Windows Live and iPhone? So it can be done, just not physically through syncing via iTunes?

  • ITunes sync with 'Windows Live Mail' / (not local Windows Contacts))?

Are there any plans to add an option in the 'Info' panel's sync contacts choice dropdown for 'Windows Live Mail'?
There's currently "windows contacts", "outlook", and "Yahoo! address book" for contacts sync choices.
Problem is, in Vista, there's no more outlook express.
I used to sync iPhone to windows address book in iTunes, then in OE, you could add your hotmail account, then open 'address book', click tools/synchronize, and it would sync your windows address book with your online hotmail one.
Now in Vista, no more OE, there is Windows Mail(uses local 'windows contacts') and you can download 'Windows Live Mail' but it uses hotmail's online address book exclusively..
..and iTunes doesn't give the choice of 'Windows Live Mail' for contact sync.
so im not able to sync contacts between iPhone and Hotmail anymore.
    Ideas?

yup what? I asked a question...

  • ICal - iPhone sync. Local calendar not showing up in iTunes list of available calendars, only Exchange calendars.

iTunes only shows Exchange-calendars in the list where you can choose which calendars (we're talking about "calendars", not "accounts") you want to synchronize. If I add a local calendar in iCal, I can not choose it to synchronize with my iPhone. It simply doesn't show up in the list of available calendars. How does iTunes compile this list of available Calendars to synchronize?

    Hi Zachary,
Here is an article I'd suggest to troubleshoot this situation:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
You may only need to go through the steps with one device and have it resolve for the others.

  • Iphone interface with Windows Live (Mail, Contact and Calendar)

I use Windows Live Free Download Client for my mail, calendar and contacts. (Just did not want to pay Microsoft for Outlook).
My iPhone does not interface with any of the above. I am not able to view my calendar or contacts on iphone. For contacts I have to go in a round about way of copying to Windows Contacts and then copying to iPhone.
Any easy solutions available or in sight ?

Hi, you just need to add your Windows Live Calendar as a new account.  Go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Add Account/Microsoft Hotmail... and then add your Windows Live account and select the option to sync your calendar.  Your Windows Live caldendar will then be viewable on your iPhone calendar (click Calendars in upper left corner to verify).  You can now edit your Windows Live calendar on your iPhone and it will update on your Windows Live desktop client, and vice versa.  Hope this helps!

  • Collaboration:Issue with Exchange Calendar Transport & Edit Local Features

I have installed the Exchange Transport to interface the Outlook calendar with our portal calendar. When I attempt to access the Calendar, I receive a blank calendar section (no errors). I have checked permissions and SAP notes, but I can't figure out where the issue is. I have the same problem with the "Edit Local" feature. When I attempt to edit a document, nothing happens (no errors). I even tried installing the Java RTE 1.4, but I do not receive any indicatation that the RTE or ActiveX component is even being used.
    Thanks

    Hi Vick,
Based on my research, I suggest you should upgrade the AD first.
    1. Exchange 2013 CU5 contains schema changes. To upgrade the Schema to CU5 you can execute the following command:
    Setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
    2. And you also should upgrade the
Configuration Partition and the Domain Partition with the following command:
    Setup.exe /PrepareAD /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
    Setup.exe /PrepareDomain /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
    3. After finished above two steps, now you can start to upgrade an Exchange 2013 server to CU5. Open a command prompt and enter the following command:
    Setup.exe /Mode:Upgrade /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
