IPhone Syncing/Restoring with new MacBook, Library Issues

Hi there
I have been using my iPhone for months since purchase, synced with my iMac. The library was located in a Shared folder so that all users could access it. I now want to sync my iPhone with my new MacBook INSTEAD of my iMac. So I used Migration Assistant to transfer my main user account from my iMac to my MacBook, but my iTunes library was now empty, so I transferred the whole iTunes library onto an external drive and copied it into place on my MacBook.
However, when I try to sync, it says my iPhone is already synced with another computer and asks me to erase and sync. I'm happy to do this, however, I want to make sure my contacts and all my SMS messages remain somehow. How can this be achieved? Have I done something wrong? Please can anyone give me some assistance?
Thanks!

iPhone recognizes you are using a new MAC so yes it will need to erase all content... then just restore it from the back up and all content will be back on there...
Contacts, Notes, Calendars etc...those are all synced in iTunes...so IF you have those items set to sync in the iTunes account of the new MAC then yes those will transfer over as well...
Remember to authorize you new MAC for the content to play

  • Syncing applications with new MacBook

I bought a new MacBook, and I have everything syncing with my iPhone except apps. I can't transfer music from the iPhone to the new MacBook, so I transferred my entire iTunes library, *including all apps*, from my old MacBook to the new one.
Likewise with apps. They won't transfer from iPhone to new MacBook, and in the syncing process, the apps will be removed from the iPhone and will be reinstalled with the copy existing on the new MacBook.
*I don't want to lose app data from my iPhone*, but I'd like to have apps synced with iTunes. If possible, how can I avoid losing app data from my iPhone and still be able to sync?
    Thanks.

  • How will iphone syncing work with multiple music library?

I switch between two different libraries on my MBP itunes because the large library points to lots more music on an ext HD. I want to keep the iPhone synced with ical, contacts etc on the MBP, but sync with different music/video content on different library. Is that possible to do?

You can only synch with ONE iTunes library

  • Unable to Sync iMac with New Macbook Pro

I've had a iMac for a few years and just got a Macbook Pro. I have been trying to sync iCal and Address Book using iSync and bluetooth. On my desktop, I select "Add Device", ender to code on the Macbook Pro and it says that it worked but when I select "Sync Devices" it says that I have no devices connected. I would really appreciate some help! Thank you!

iSync is for syncing between a Mac and a third-party mobile phone - it is not designed to sync between Macs.
For syncing between Macs you can use MobileMe. http://www.apple.com/mobileme

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.

Don't worry! Everything should be back to normal if you follow these steps.

  • How to sync Iphone with new itunes library?

I used to sync my iphone with itunes on my macbook.
My macbbok was lost, and i got a new macbook.
Now when i try to sync with the new itunes libaray, it prpompts that it will delete my exisiting data on my phone, This would mean losing all my contacts, and text messages etc.
Is there a way i can sync to a new itunes library without losing my data?
    thanks
    nazmul

Sorry to hear about your macbook.
Others have reported that if you have at least on contact and calendar entry on your new computer when you sync, then it will not erase you iphone, it will simply merge the two. While that makes perfect sense, I have not tried it myself.
As for the texts, I don;t think you can get those back.
Music can only be synced to one library at a time, so the music will be gone. However, in Itunes you can "transfer purchases," at least putting your itunes purchased music on your computer.
It is always a good idea to have a backup. I use an external hard drive. Then you will have a complete backup if anything happens to your computer.
Good luck. I hope it works out.

  • Is there a way to move music I had on my iPhone 4 to my new macbook air, using iTunes it seems to want to synch to iTunes library where I don't have any music stored?

    Hello KM47,
It soundsl ike you are needing to copy your iTunes purchases to your computer rather than sync it at this point. You can use the following article to transfer your purchases with the following article:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
If you have your library stored on another computer, you can also copy the library to the new MacBook Air with this article:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • How can i keep my music from my iPhone and sync it my new macbook? Only purchased music seems to be available to sync, even though the rest of the music was uploaded from CD's on my  last laptop.

Hi, I have changed from an old laptop to a macbook air. how can i keep my music from my iPhone and sync it my macbook? Only purchased music seems to be available to sync, even though the rest of the music was uploaded from CD's on my  last laptop.
As I can't upload CD's onto the Macbook Air, how do I keep the existing music on my iphone syn onto my new macbook without deleting all the cds on the iphone??
    Many thanks!

    Hi RaulRod,
Are you pressing the Sync button to transfer music after connecting your iPhone or do you have the option checked to 'Automatically Sync when the iPhone is connected?'
Have you tried manually dragging and dropping music from your library into your phone?

  • Cannot sync music with new iphone 5 or podcasts

This is so frustrating, Podcasts start to download on my phone then tell me theres an error, I can't sync my itunes music with phone either. I've searched on here and appled many techniques. I am subscribed to podcasts. I've checked manually manage music, there's only 2 songs i've imported by CD that I want!!
    Can anyone help?

What happens when transferring Podcasts from your iTunes library on your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process, which is selected under the Podcasts tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes?
if I go into my music on my phone and choose 'not on this iphone' the music comes up I choose what I want to download and the same thing as the podcast happens so I connected to itunes via my macbook air and it won't sync!
The first part is not syncing with iTunes. This is for downloading music on your iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store - that is not on your iPhone. This does not apply to Music imported into your iTunes library on your computer from a music CD unless you have iTunes Match enabled with your iTunes account.
What error message is provided if any when trying to transfer music from your iTunes library on your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process? Manually managing music and videos requires dragging the music from your iTunes library to your iPhone located under Devices in the iTunes source list. Syncing requires selecting Sync Music under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and making your selections below followed by a sync. What happens when doing this?

  • HT204088 How how can I synch my ipod + iphone music to my new computer? I get the same error  "my ipod or iphone is synched with another itunes library. An Ipod can be synched with only one itunes library at a time. What would I like to do Erase and Synch

How can I synch my ipod & iphone music (purchased from itunes on my old laptop) to my new laptop? I keep getting the same message on my itunes on my new laptop: " The ipod/Iphone is synched with another itunes library. An ipod/iphone can be synched with only one itunes library at a time. What would you like to do - Erase and Synch or Transfer Purchases?" What do I do?
    A couple of other items:
    1) I am guessing Apple does not keep a history of all my music purchases? As I did not have my entire library backed-up anywhere, and relying on the music I have on my ipod and my iphone as my only source of itunes music....I have lost over 500 songs!!!
    2) I used to have an Apple account under another account name, and since have switched to a new account name. Is there anyway to find the history of purchases from my old Apple account name and transfer these over to my new account name and onto my new laptop?
I hope someone can help, I am having a very difficult time trying to obtain answers. Angie

The iphone/ipod is NOT a storage/backup device.  Not maintaining a backup copy is a big mistake.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone/ipod to your computer:
Authorize your computer for all accounts and then click  File>Transfer Purchases

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods discussed here: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer.  If you no longer have the old computer and you have to transfer it from your phone, you will have to purchase and use third-party software to extract the music from your phone, such as Touch Copy  or CopyTrans.
