IPhone to image capture picture orientation problem.

I am having a problem with my iPhone 3G (2.2.1) and pictures. I've seen several other topics about this but none of them address or fix the problem for me (since most of them are from people using other applications like Picasa or iPhoto). Opening up every picture in an image editor and rotating it before syncing back to my iphone is NOT a solution. It's a bandaid.
Here is the problem.
Take a picture with iPhone. Connect to Mac. Image Capture app launches and I "Download All" to Pictures folder in Home folder. Images are deleted from the iPhone and moved into the Pictures folder. Opening an image from the Pictures folder opens them in the correct orientation in Preview.
iTunes is set to import all pictures from the Pictures folder. Sync iPhone. Images are uploaded to the photo library and all of them are rotated 90 degrees CCW. Turning the phone causes the images to rotate automatically to retain "correct orientation" which is still wrong.
Uploading an image from the phone (to Facebook for example) from the Photo Library results in a rotated image on the server.
None of the suggestions I've seen so far are a "solution". I don't want to open every image I take in iPhoto and rotate it before I sync it back to my Photo Library.
My question is how do I fix this, or prevent it from happening? Alternatively, is this a recognized bug that Apple intends to fix?

This is a useful method to minimize the problem, but it is still not a solution. It is unacceptable that I should have to resort to an extra step using a third party application to get my pictures onto my device, especially considering this problem didn't previously exist.
I am using all Apple tools (iPhone, iMac, image capture, iTunes) because I want to maintain the integrity of the process.
I know this problem is related to EXIF information in the image resulting in an unwanted rotation. IF I open an image in another program, I can clearly see that the image dimensions are listed at 1200x1600 (portrait). Either image capture or iTunes is modifying or removing these values before the image is optimized and added to the Photo Library on the phone, resulting in an orientation mismatch.
I guess I'm going to have to call Apple.

  • IMac applications see my iPhone 5s but cannot display the photos.  Last week I was using Image Capture with no problem.

I have an iMac 10.8.4 and an iPhone 5s. I recently downloaded 110 photos and 10 very short videos using Image Capture v.6.2.  I plugged the phone into the iMac, all of the photos appeared in Image Capture, I selected all and sent them along to a folder on an external hd.
However, this week, attempting the same procedure, I get nothing.  Image Capture sees my phone but does not display any photos, just a big blank window.  Same response from iPhoto, Aperture, and Lightroom; they all recognize the phone but none of the photos appear.  Insight would be appreciated!  Thanks.

    Hello WellShoot,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with importing photos from your Camera Roll using Image Capture.  You have taken some really good steps already to troubleshoot this issue.  The article below has a few additional troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Picture Orientation problem with Konica Minolta Dynax 7D in iPhoto'08

    Hello,
as far as I know the Dynax 7D has a bug concerning saving the picture orientation correctly in the EXIF tags. OK, that is definitly no Apple issue. But if I want to import pictures from the camera, in +the preview+ of the iPhoto import the portrait pictures are displayed in +correct orientation+. If I do the import, afterwards the portrait pictures are +in landscape mode again+, so I have to turn them manually. So the software is able to cope with portrait pictures, but chooses not to apply this...
This is the point I would like to have fixed or at least to have a automatic workaround. Any suggestions are welcome. Did anybody solved that problem already?
Will there be a fix for that behaviour in iPhoto'08?
    Best wishes

Create a new test library and import a few of the problem files into it to see if they will display properly. If they do then it's a problem with the current library. If they don't then you'll need to see if it's system wide or limited to your account. To do that log into another account, create a test library and try there. If you don't have a second account it's a good thing to have because it's a great troubleshooting tool. Just create a non-admin test account.
If it works in the second account your primary account is causing it. It could be some other preference file other than iPhoto's that is the culprit. Here's how to determine if that's the case:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
If the problem persists in both accounts a reinstall of iPhoto may be warranted. If it gets to that point you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder before you install iPhoto from the disk it came on.

  • "Unlock iPhone 5" - Image Capture

Hi! I am running 10.9.5 on my Macbook Pro. After connecting my iPhone to the Mac to download Photos from it, Image Capture continuously stated that I have to unlock my iPhone.
I've unlocked my iPhone, disconnected and re-connected (second time with iPhone unlocked), restarted the iPhone and restarted my Mac with no luck.
Probably just a small issue that can be fixed?
    iPhone 5 with OS 8.0.2
    Thanks!

So do you think I should be myself the Unlock version of it in Canada directly ? Cause if you go to : Apple.ca/iPhone , you will see the starting price at 699$ !
    Thanks

  • Flash image viewer, picture scale problem in CS3

Please someone help me. I have built a website 3 years ago, and I still have this problem. In CS3 I added a flash image viewer (slideshow.swf) as a slideshow to show gardens we have made. When you first visit the site and look at the pictures (wich are bigger than the viewer window because of picture quality issues) they don`t shrink to fit into the viewer window, you only end up seeing a fraction of them. But when they download and you go back to see them again a second later, they become the right size. It also swiches to the right size when the loop play gets back to the first pic again.
In the flash element properties I tried the different scale settings, and looked at other settings too but I couldn`t make it work.
I think making the viewer window as large as the pictures, would look odd. Maybe buying on other slideshow program to insert into dreamweaver would work.
If you would like to see the site its: tsugagardens.com , than look in the photo gallery and after the pics download go back with the back button and see the difference in the pics.
    Thank you for your efforts,
    Tibor

  • Image Gallery picture orientation

Is there a way to have a gallery where all of the pictures are rotated 90°?   I have pictures that are taller than they are wide, so I would like them to be display sideways.

    Hi Bruton
Siena does not currently support the ability to rotate pictures. However if you have images that are taller than wide, you could use an image gallery for which the template height is greater than its width. You should be able to see several images next to
    each other.

  • Slideshow picture orientation problem

I found some very old posts on apparently related problems, but nothing recent. It is June 3, 2012. My AppleTV firmware is current. My iPad (3) OS is up to date. As best I can tell, everything is up to date.
When I play a slideshow on my iPad, it plays perfectly.
When I play the same slideshow using AppleTV, pictures which should be displayed 'vertically' are displayed rotated 90 degrees, i.e., horizontally.
I'm not willing to edit my pictures to correct this. There are simply too many, plus, they display correctly everywhere except in an AppleTV slideshow and in the wonderful windows picture viewer which Microsoft doesn't seem inclined to ever fix. They display correctly using AppleTV 'manually'. The slideshow feature is the only place I see a problem.
So it seems clear to me that there is a software issue associated with running a slideshow using AppleTV. The problem could be in the iPad. The problem could be in the AppleTV. Perhaps, if one really stretches, the problem could be in my wireless network. The only thing that is certain is that there is a problem. Please help!

  • IPhoto MobileMe uploaded picture orientation problem

Hi, I scanned a number of old photos into iPhoto and moved the photos to upright orientations (portrait and landscape). I then organized them under a single event and published to the MobileMe Gallery. Once uploaded, however, the orientations of some of the photos are all messed up, unlike the ones displayed on iPhoto. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    Then re-publish the gallery.

  • Image Capture App Not recognizing Iphone

Using a MBP with 10.5 with most recent updates. Running iphone 1.14
Iphoto does not import my pictures from my iphone. This is because image capture doesn't recognize it.
I have read many posts about this and will let you know what I have tried so far.
    - Disabled auto syncing in itunes and image capture
    - deleted the plist for iphoto, image capture, and preview.
    - reinstalled image capture from original leopard cd using pacifist.
    - reset and rebooted both devices many times.
I have an alternate install of OS X Leopard on an external USB drive which works well with my iphone and image capture, shows up right away.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be. I have given up, tried everything I could think of, but I know the problem lies with image capture not recognizing the iphone.

Already tried a connection without a hub, on both usb ports on the macbook.
As for secondary software that might interfere, none installed to my knowledge.
Well it looks like the mac quote of "it just works" doesnt work in my situation, I dont feel like booting to my second hard drive just to sync the photos. So I guess I will have to wait until my new macbook for a fresh install because I dont want to erase everything currently on my book.
might try and install and archive next time I have some serious software issues and hopefully that will solve my problems.

  • Transfer photos from iPhone to mac without iPhoto / image capture and preview doesn't see device

Hello. I'd like to transfer photos from my iPhone to my Mac. I read (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083) that iPhoto is the standard application for that; I'd like to do without. I read that image capture (http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/8954/copy-photos-off-iphone-without-iph oto) or even Preview (http://osxdaily.com/2010/07/10/transfer-photos-from-iphone-to-computer/)  could help. Neither of them see my iPhone although cable connected and iTunes does. So my question is two: If Preview and Image Capture are ineed supposed to, why don't they? And is there any other way?
    Thanks

I dont like iphoto so the easiest way to do it is using image capture, just plug in your iphone launch image capture from your applications folder and import all images or just selected images into any folder you want.
Moreover, you can follow this page about how to transfer photo/pictures from iPhone to Mac, which give an easy guide to figure out this problem.
    Have a good luck!

Any suggestions on how to reenable ability to transfer photos from iPhone to iPhoto and/or Image Capture appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am having the identical error. I have an iPhone 4 and 2 macs, the phone is managed from an old G5 PowerMac and images are saved from it to Aperture for photos and videos go to iPhoto 11. The Mac is running 10.5.8. I last appear to have downloaded movies from iPhone4 to mac in December , the oldest video being 10 Dec 2010.
This week I was going to back up a handful of images on the phone but after connecting it to the mac, something that happens several times a week to sync to itunes for app updates etc I found it did not list for import options in iPhoto nor in Aperture. I looked at Image Capture and that tells me no device is connected.
I have no problems taking images off the phone using a MBP which has 10.6 and Image Capture recognises the phone.
I have tried the following after reading through all the discussions on the topic of which there appear to be many with this problem.
Restore the iphone then update settings from archive. - did nothing
Closed apps reconnected iPhone started apps...  - did nothing
Switched phone off then on then connected to mac then opened apps - nothing
This Mac seems happy to communicate t othe phone though iTunes but appears to have lost the way when it comes to getting images off the iPhone. Any help keenly appreciated.

  • Image Capture won't scan to Photoshop

I just downloaded Lion (10.7.2) and everything works fine, except ...
When scanning through Image Capture, it won't open the scanned images in Photoshop (CS4) when set to do so. It will open in any other program I try (Preview, Illustrator, etc ...) but not Photoshop.
When I scan an image with PS set as the "scan to" app, Photoshop will open, but it doesn't open the image.  Instead, Image Capture opens a "scan results" dialog box with the name of the image and a magnifying glass icon that shows me that the image has been saved in my "pictures" folder.  I'm clearly choosing the PS app, and not the PS folder in Image Capture, but for some reason it doesn't know what to do with the image when it gets there. Again, the PS app OPENS, but the image doesn't. It just dumps it in the "pictures" folder.
By all accounts, Photoshop seems to be working properly. I can click on a scanned image and open it with Photoshop manually. Scanned images just won't open in PS automatically through Image Capture like they used to before I upgraded to Lion.
I tried rebooting and repairing permissions just for the heck of it, but those did nothing.  Image Capture has no problem recognizing my scanner (Brother MFC 6490CW) and I made sure to download the latest driver for it.
I'm really at a loss as to why this is occuring.  If anyone has a theory, I'd love to hear it.  Scanning stuff into Photoshop is my job basically, so this is driving me crazy.

I can duplicate that behaviour, best file it as a Bug with Apple if you have a Developer ID ?
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
I will file it also and see what response I get.
BR filed: I note that in testing this if I set the Import To selector to Preview, Mail and iPhoto it behaves as expected so it's possible this is an Adobe issue not an Apple one. Might be worth looking in their support forums to see if anyone elase has this and has found a work-around.

  • Where are temporary files created for "image capture"?

    Hi all
I have been using image capture with no problem whatsoever, until recently. I was scanning a big file and while it was saving it or something I closed the lid of the computer and interrupted the scan. Now the scanner can do a preview but is no longer able to "scan" the file that i see perfectly through preview. I think that the problem is that there is a corrupt temporary file somewhere that needs to be manually deleted. If you know where such files are stored or if you have a better idea, please let me know.

You may be on to the correct solution. I've seen this problem with a big printing job that a user had to cancel and then had to "go in" and delete the print job before they could print again. On the Mac, there is something called CUPS (something Unix Printing System) and it has a role in printing and I believe faxing. It "might" play a role in scanning through Image Capture but I'm not sure. Anyway give it a look and see if there is an incomplete scan job in there that you can delete.
Note: this looks like a website URL but it leads to CUPS on your Mac.
    http://127.0.0.1:631/jobs/
This may not be applicable to scanners but it's worth a look.

  • How do you disable Image Capture

When I insert a SD card in my iMac running OS 10.10, the program Image Capture starts. I find this an irritation. Does anyone know how to turn this off or disable the app?

Not sure but do you get a small triangular icon in the bottom left corner of Image Capture after selecting your SD card under Devices (top left), if so click and chose "No Application" - that's how you control on whether an iPad or iPhone opens Image Capture.
