Iphone turning off randomly

I have recently bought a new iphone 3gs and it seems to turn itself off 2 - 3 times a day. This happens when I'm using it, even when I'm talking on the phone, but also when its locked and in my handbag. It comes up with a black screen and the white loading symbol rotates in the middle before it goes off. I have to put my sim pin lock in again before it comes on so its definitely turning off completely.
I visited the apple shop who told me that its possible to book an appointment with an advisor, how do I go about doing this? I have already tried re setting my iphone on itunes (what they recommended) and this has made no change to the problem. This definitely should not be happening for £450!! Is this fixable or will I need to exchange the phone?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions..

If this is an Apple store just take the iPhone in for service. You can make a reservation right there or
make an appointment here. http://store.apple.com/uk

Continue you troubleshooting with the article below to check the health of your battery. I would try to run hardware diagnostics on it to see if it passes the test.

  • My iPhone turns off randomly, Apple swapped it for a new phone but my new phone does exactly the same thing!?

  • Has anyone else experience their iPhone 5 turning off at a high percentage and turns off randomly turning back on with the red battery needing it to be plugged in?

Have had my iPhone 5 for almost a year now, love it, but lately it has been turning off randomly with percentage rates of 50% or above and when I go back to turn it back on it has the dead battery sign on the screen. I am trying to figure out if its hardware issuse or if its the battery itself. Just need suggestions on what to do? Took it in and they want me to restore it but I want to try something else before I wipe it clean.

    1)  Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    2)  Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...
    3)  Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
    iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
    Then...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and Restore

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly and refused to turn on until 10 mins or so...

My iPhone 4 originally AT&T smart phone, is what I use on T-mobile as of right now. I have had it for just about two years now and I think it's coming to its last few days. It turns off randomly throughout the day and does not turn on right away when I push either other of the button (simultaneously or one at a time), until about 5-10+ minutes or so. It is very frustrating and I really do love apple products but I don't know, something is telling me to switch to android unless a miracle happens.
    Thanks in advanced.

  • Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in

Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in.
    Has anyone had this problem?
If I leave the phone (thus not doing anything to it) for an extended period of time say 2 hrs. It will have turned off and you can't turn it back on unless you plug it in, but it's got heaps of "Battery" left.
Ever so often it will turn off randomly as well, and can't turn it on again.

If your iPhone is powering off, this is not normal.
Try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If no change after doing so, your iPhone has a hardware problem. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly, and doesn't start up unless its on the charger. Hard resetting it when its turned off doesn't turn it on either.

My iPhone 4 is running iOS 4.3.4 and it suddenly turns off randomly, usually when the batery is around 85% or so. When I try to turn it on the normal way or hard resetting it, it doesn't turn on. It only turns on when its connected to a charger, and the time and date resets to 7.30am, January 1st 1970. I have no idea why is this happening and how do I resolve this issue? I really don't want to go get it replaced as its too much of a hassle and Im leaving to another country in 2 days time..

It also starts charging at 70% or so when it turns on..

  • My iPhone 3gs turns off randomly  (applecare sent it back as it was!)

Hi, had my iPhone 3Gs 32GB Black since about August 2009. From the outset it has turned off randomly ever few days or so, usually when I am in the middle of a call. I tried resetting the phone. Removing all the apps. etc. etc. but no luck.I stuck with it thinking that the problem would go away or that some future software update would fix the issue but also no luck.
So I took it into Movistar (the dealer for the phone here in Spain) a couple of weeks ago and they duly sent it off to Applecare for repair. Apparently you cannot do that yourself, it has to go through the store.
Anyway, got the phone back today with a really shoddy looking photocopy from AppleCare Service in Cork (Ireleand) saying that " their technicians could not find any problem with the phone..." blah blah blah. and that the problem should fixed by reset!
So what do I do now. I know that if they have not actually found the fault then the issue will persists. The Movistar sales woman said to just bring it back in that case and they would send it off to Apple again (for another two weeks...).
Is there any way I can contact Apple CAre direct about this? Anyone got any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Tony

Thanks, but no Apple stores in Spain. Have to go through telco. Movistar. Will just send it back again for repair... see if they can fix it this time or give me a replacement.

  • My iphone 4S Black 16 GB with IOS 7.0.4 turns off randomly in low battery less than 15% and also when I am taking pictures from my front camera in low battery of 30%. This is happening very often. Can someone help here with advise?

This is happening very often. Can someone help here with advise? The phone is slightly more than 2 years bought from singapore I live in India

Either your battery is failing or your battery gauge needs to be recalibrated. Start by recalibrating:
When it shuts off charge for just a minute or two, then restart (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). Deliberately run the battery down until the phone shuts off at 1%. If it shuts off above 1% repeat the above until you get to 1%. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger without using the phone. This process will recalibrate the battery gauge.
To prevent this from happening again about once a month run the battery all the way down to 1%, then continue until the phone shuts off. Apple recommends this in their battery help article, but they don't say why you should do it. The have some hokum about "keeping the electrons moving." Honestly! The iPad battery tip gives the correct reason.
If this does not resolve the problem you most likely need a new battery. If you are near an Apple store take the phone in and they can test the battery for you.

  • IPhone 3G turns off randomly

Ok, firstly I know this topic has been coming up on the forum, but I haven't found any of the threads helpful or offering a clear solution so far.
I had my iPhone for 5 months and during that period I haven't installed any apps on it. Everything worked fine, no problems at all. Just recently I installed apps for the first time and it was fine for a while (2 weeks or so) but then it started turning off randomly. I can only hold in the sleep button until the apple logo comes up and it turns on again.
I figured it had something to to with the apps so I did a reset and only kept apps that 'seemed' to me safe to have (Facebook, Wordpress and Skype). But the problem still remains.
So here is my question, has anybody found a soild solution to this? Should I consider returning it? Can it be a hardware issue?
Thanks in advance for any help

    You're welcome.
Does that mean that every time I add applications and this 'turning off' happens, I can't have any apps on my iPhone? (sadly that would defeat the purppose of haveing an iPhone to a large degree)
No. If this happens every time you add applications, there is something wrong with your iPhone. I suggested removing all 3rd party applications to see if the same occurs without any 3rd party applications installed. I ended my previous post with the following:
*I don't believe this will make any difference. _If an iPhone reset, a restoring the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup does not resolve it, then your iPhone has a hardware issue._*

  • Backlight turning off randomly

I have a late 2009 27" 2.66 iMac (latest OS and updates). Just the other day the backlight started turning off randomly (can still see screen under a light). I have corners enabled and can put the display to sleep, wake it again and the backlight turns back on, but only for a short time. And I have a second monitor plugged in with no problems on that.
I've read that it may need new hardware which I don't really want to be forking out on. I've tried the other things of reseting the PRAM and SMC with no luck.
I've tried to boot AHT to run a diagnostic but for some reason whatever I do I can't get it to run.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

It's probably a connection if it does it a lot when moving it. If it's out of warranty, you could use one of these guides to open it up and check for lose wires or connections.

My iphone shuts off randomly and the button is too sensitive. Like I don't even press the lock button and it shuts off. Also when my finger barely rubs over the lock button, it shuts off too. This happened after the 7.1 update. It's on the iphone 5. Someone help me. I just want to fix this. Maybe if it's possible I can disable the lock button.

The lock button does not turn OFF the iPhone. It will give you a screen with the option to turn OFF the iPhone. Possibly the battery is faulty. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple store for free battery diagnostic testing and evaluation.

  • Turns OFF randomly and can hardly go ON again

Hey guys!! I've come up with this problem last week on my iphone. I just turns OFF randomly, by any determinate reason, it just goes off, all of the sudden just as it would've crashed and then when I try to turn it on it restars at least 5 or 6 times before it actually turns on, takes more than half an hour and it just kills my battery. The same thing is when I turn in off on purpose... it won't turn on again in at least 30 minutes, that's crazy hahahah.

I've restored it last night, and since then I haven't had any problem... I wouldn't sing my praises yet though, let's see what happens. Have you already tried this?
PS..: I'm sorry about my spelling mistakes in the first post, wrote too quickly

  • 3GS turns off randomly

My iphone has been turning off randomly while using apps and making calls for a while now. I have tried restoring it but does not fix the issue. The phone is 3 years old. I would get a 4GS but since the 5 is coming out later this year Id rather wait for that. But I really need a working phone right now.

You could try to disconnect and after a few minutes reconnect the battery. That theoretically resets the phone BIOS and is supposed to help regarding the reboot issue (see post by NIKKOH007) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2471090&start=2055&tstart=30
Or replace the battery altogether with a newer, iOS 4 compatible battery. At iFixit.com they have come to the conclusion that not all batteries in the 3GS are necessarily iOS4.x compatible or a battery defect may be exposed after updating.
