IPhone Update forced restore - backup doesn't include apps or music!

Hi,
I updated my software today and after it had installed the software the message came up that I needed to restore my phone. A backup had been done as part of the new software install so I let it restore and then selected 'restore from previous backup', and selected the one from today. The backup from today DID NOT back up ANY of the apps I used to have on my iPhone, nor did it back up ANY of my music. I can't remember all the apps I had on my iPhone (I had about 60). What can I do?

I wasn't at all rude. I merely pointed out that thr dramatic poise adopted in your previous post of 'how on earth am i supposed to xxxxxx' was not rocket science. Its simple. If I was gong to be rude I might have said something impolite about the logic in not checking your backup was correct before doing a system wipe as part of the update process but I refrained from that.
I did sync the iPhone before I updated the software,
Evidently not, otherwise you would have your purchased music in iTunes. I assume you didn't check that it was in iTunes before you embarked upon ... ? That wouldn't have been rocket science either.
and it also did a backup during the update process.
Correct, but as its after a reset/update cycle, the phone is actually empty as it hasn't got to the restore stage yet.
So it first deleted everything off the phone, reloaded the new system update, rebooted it so its now a blank 3.1.3 phone, did a backup of that so that you have a restore point, and then it would normally restore the information from iTunes and the original backup.....
The only bit that appears to fall down is that your original sync before starting the process didnt work and you proceeded without checking that your information was there.
Its great that you have a backup, as a lot of people don't bother. I only pointed that out as most people who get all antsy over losing uPhone content due to not syncing, rarely have backups either.
Take umbrage if you will, it won't solve your problem.

Yes. You can't restore a backup made with an iOS version later than the one installed on the device
Yes, if you're restoring from iCloud.  No, if restoring from iTunes.

  • HT4236 So if I update my iphone, I will lose all of my photos, apps and music on my phone?

So if i update my iphone, I will lose all of my photos, apps and music..correct? None of these things are saved on my computer [except some of the music]...

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would any digital camera.  this is covered in the manual.
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
You should transfer all itunes purchases from the iphone to the computer:  File>Transfer Purchases.

i want to update my phone, but i purchased many apps and music on the phone. it won't let me authorize my computer so i cannot update. i don't want to deauthorize all my computers. how can i find out which 5 computers i have authorized? also how can i update the software?

This is a tedious solution, which is stupid!  And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization.  I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. Can’t believe we have to do such a bass-ackwards kludge!

  • Restoring backup doesn't work! Iphone 3GS, Itunes 9

I live in Holland, but I presently am in Japan. In Japan I made a backup of my Iphone. Afterward I tried to install some apps I downloaded through Itunes (while still being in Japan). When I tried to put the apps on my Phone I received the message stating it would delete apps that weren't on the computer yet. So I authorized this computer (using my login data) and started syncing, even though the message still appeared. As a result I now have only a few apps left. Most of them have been removed from my Iphone and strangely, none of the apps I downloaded here (in Japan) were put on the Iphone!?!?!
So I did a restore. Yet, strangely, I don't get my original apps back.
I even restored the original Backup folder from a couple of days ago, so everything should be there.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem is?

Iphone will sync apps with only one computer at a time. If you sync to another computer, then it will erase the current content from the iphone first, then replace with content from the new computer.
The itunes backup that iphone does while syncing doe not include apps:

  • HT3696 Does this article need an update? The chart doesn't include Intel Core i5.

I'm using an iMac model 1.1 with OS 10.8.4. Trying to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. The chart in the article about how to find that out doesn't include an Intel Core i5 processor. What is it?

Perhaps the page didn't load fully, or there was a temporary problem at apple... it shows in the table, and has been there since 2011.

My daughter can't remember her passcode, and she has never synced it.  Is there any way to restore it without losing all the apps and music that were downloaded?

If you can't remember the Passcode, you need to restore the device from the computer it was last synced with.
Follow the instructions for putting the device in recovery mode >  iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
If you are a resident of the U.S., have iTunes 10.3 or later installed, and iOS 4.3.3 or later, can re download iTunes purchases for free.
So retore the iPod, then re download the iTunes media.

  • Restoring new iPhone 4S from iCloud backup has created an app sync nightmare with iTunes

I've restored my new iPhone 4S from iCloud and plugged it into my computer to sync over the apps so they wouldnt have to redownload via iCloud. Hit the initial ok dialogue button, which had an auto-sync apps option checkmarked under it (this was the only dialogue option and only checkmark). Now iTunes wants to reload all apps and erase app data.
The phone is peforming as expected, downloading the apps one-by-one from iCloud, however, I won't be able to sync the phone, as leaving apps sync checked will rewrite all apps (erasing app data and adding apps I don't want on my phone), and unchecking apps sync will delete all apps from the phone. I've tried removing the ~/Library/iTunes/ folder, hoping it would force iTunes to re-initialize the sync config. This didn't help at all.
Any suggestions? I really don't want to re-restore from iCloud, but thinking I'm gonna have to and hope that not checking the auto-sync apps (when the phone is plugged in for the first time) will fix the issue. It's rather mindnumbing that there doesn't appear to be a less painful option for the simple task of setting up a new device from an old device iCloud backup. Thanks in advance and I apologize if this is hard to follow.

Ok, so this is pretty infuriating. I've gone ahead and restored from iCloud again. This time when I plugged my phone into iTunes for the first time, I unchecked the option to automatically sync apps. As expected, the Apps are not set to sync now, however, the computer does not display the apps loading on the phone, so if I did go ahead and turn on App sync, I would end up losing all app data. It appears that I will have to let all apps redownload from iCloud before I can do anything regarding syncing with iTunes. I can't believe this is the only option. I suppose I could turn off iCloud backup on my iPhone 4, allow it to create a local backup, then local restore onto iPhone 4S, then turn on iCloud backup. That seems a little too band-aidish to me, though.

Edit: Yes, I have 10.7.2 and all available system updates as of today (10/14/11).

  • TS3682 Iphone 3g cannot restore backup from an Iphone 4 on IOS 7.

so... i went from having a 4 back to a 3.... had ios 7 on my iphone 4 and now I can't restore back-up because that upgrade isnt available for Iphone 3..... Anything that I can do?

I agree, this actually makes me regret buying an iphone because the main reason for buying an iphone 5 is to avoid setting up the phone, contacts etc. from scratch and now it doesn't really make any difference.
And I am not sure if I should back up iphone 5 now after using it for a while as I am not sure if it would overwrite the back up from my old phone.
Can anyone help loading the back up of iphone 4 onto iphone 5???

  • IPhone update caused restore

My daughter attempted the most recent update on her iPhone 5, and it has put her into recovery mode. We do not know if any recent backups exist, nor do we know how to check. Is there anyway to go back to where we started? The last thing we want to do is lose her precious data.

Once in recovery mode, it's too late and everything on iPhone is gone.
You can check computer iTunes when your last backup occurred.
iTunes > Preferences... (Windows user: Edit > Preferences...) > Devices > your backup is listed here.
