IPhone video to FCP7 settings

Hi All,
Sorry, I can see this has been posted before but there are so many conflicting answers it becomes confusing and overwhelming even though I am fairly familiar with trying to troubleshoot these issues.
I have shot footage on my iPhone 5 and I want to edit it using FCP 7. This is to be used for a video on Youtube.
I know I need to use Streamclip to convert it but what are the optimum settings and what is the best Easy Setup to use on FCP?
I guess the main confusion is in regards to the variables of Compression, the Frame size and the Field Dominance and how this affects the FCP setup.
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
Dan

Use the ProRes LT setting in Compressor.
Pass through the Frame Rate and Image Size.
Make sure the audio is converted to 48khz/16 bit.
This will yield a progressive file at whatever frame rate and size you recorded. It will be in ProResLT which is just dandy to edit.
When completed, convert back to h.264 and send to your web provider.

It doesn't matter what it is in your backup that's causing the problem because you can not selectively restore things from your backup. It's all or nothing.

  • Project settings for mixing AVCHD and iPhone video

    Hello,
It seems that getting the correct project settings is imporant to Premiere, but what if I would like to mix AVCHD video with iPhone 3GS video?  Which project settings would I select in this case?
    Thank you.

This question aroused my curiosity and I tried mixing 1080i AVCHD and Nokia phone .3gp video on an 1080i AVCHD timeline in PE8 - the 3gp video played fine, the AVCHD video needed the timeline rendered to give a decent quality playback.  I realise that's different from iPhone video, but I'm simply suggesting that it's worth trying, and that project presets don't necessarily mean that only the preset file type will work.
I have to say that this whole project settings thing is a mystery to me.  Why does a 1080i AVCHD preset make a better job of playing back 3gp video from the timeline than it does playing back 1080i AVCHD?  Weird. Why not just handle all that in the background (eg without asking the user for any settings at all, like one NLE here does, or simply setting the timeline to the first clip of the project (optionally) like another one here does?
As for the comment earlier on about background rendering - here (after a day or so) it seems to be not a very useful thing.  Much grinding by the CPU for a very slow result.  To get the timeline to play smoothly it's much quicker to position the work area bar as required and hit "enter".  Also, one has to watch for the new analysis process, which once started seems to create an everlasting CPU intensive process even if you cancel it.  You have to keep a sharp eye on the process manager and see what's consuming CPU cycles (if you don't know already) and kill any apparently rouge Adobe-related processes by hand.  "Bmem" is your friend here, which is about the first thing I install on any PC of mine - badmofo.org/bmem is the site for this excellent freeware app.

  • Iphone Video Settings?

Pemier elements has a hard time with my iphone vidieo.  If I use the stabilizer the video will not even play.  Are there settings to best handle iphone video?

What iPhone version do you have?
I need specific answers to help, and I want to help.
    Information such as
There is no setting in project settings for the iphone.
is not going to help me help you. I know what the program has to offer. I need to know how best to apply that to what you have in the way of video properties. And, we will not know that until you share that information with us. If you do not know the properties of your video, we will help you find that information. I suspect it is 1080p (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second), but suspect is not good enough as a base for troubleshooting.
You say the Timeline won't render
    a. is there an orange or no colored line over the Timeline content?
    b. do you have the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar set to span the entire content of what is to be rendered?
What does the Timeline content look like at playback without VideoStabilizer? Does it playback at all? I imagine it should since you are applying a Video Stabilizer to it.
After you apply the VideoStabilizer, are you applying the detaults or customizing the settings for it? If customizing, in what way? The VideoStabilizer probably has the most dramatic affect (increasing) on rendering time for Timeline content to which it is applied. The nature of the clip plus the VideoStabilizer settings may have created this
with stabilizer the video wont play,
I think you get the idea of what is involved. Please allow us to help you sort out the details which you have on this  and which we need for you to share with us to help you.
    Thanks.

Add On...I have tested iPhone 5 video on Premiere Elements and found it to work. The classical issue with cell phone video is report of out of sync audio. If not corrected by correct Premiere Elements project settings, several of such users have found resolution in the matter by changing the variable to constant frame rates. Programs such as QuickTime Pro has been mentioned in this context. Also, use of Handbrake in this matter has help some.

  • Editing iPhone Video

    Two short questions:
    1. What is the best thing to do when you end up with a bunch of clips at different frame rates?
    2. When importing video shot on the iPhone into PPCS4, why does Premiere place the video on track one, and force the audio to track 2?
iPhone video is 640X480, 4:3 and produces .MOV files with the h.264 codec.  The frame rate it produces depends on the lighting - lower light, lower frame rate.  There is no manual override for any of these settings.  So, I shot several clips and they range from 15 to 30 FPS.
On question 2, this is not exlusive to iPhone produces quicktime files, I've seen it before when importing from other sources.  The iPhone produces a mono audio track, I wonder if that's the problem.

the audio problem was indeed, it need a mono source track.  I couldn't find a way to change the track, so I just added and deleted.
This is correct. The user cannot directly change the designation of the Audio Track. Deleting "Empty Tracks" will take care of it for you.
My default setup for a Sequence is 2 mono, 3 stereo and a 5.1 Master. Should I not need those mono Tracks (SFX for me), I just delete them from the Sequence.
In PrPro, one cannot drag Tracks, Video, or Audio, one must either plan ahead, or use the Delete/Add Tracks, to get things neat on the Timeline. Some NLE's do allow one to drag Tracks, but PrPro does not.
The project itself has a defined framerate, so doesn't this basically convert it (even before export)?
Not directly, but Interpret Footage will do this for you. In CS4, one can do separate Sequences, with different specs/Presets. Earlier, on was stuck with one setting per Project, and ONLY Intrepret Footage would help. For me, I will always convert, outside of PrPro and then Import, but that is my personal workflow.
And, what happens to the clip when you up-convert?  It seems that it's just adding frames, for example going from 15 to 30 its' just going to make two of each. That makes for some choppy video.  And finally, how does one make the conversion before hitting the timeline with the clip, and what is the benefit?
This will depend on how much conversion is needed. I use DigitalMedia Converter, and it's quite good. In the end, the editor is the final judge. I'd suggest trying it both ways, and testing what is best.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Importing & Editing iPhone Video, but end result horrible Quality?? Why?

I imported a few videos from my Iphone to edit in PE7. After editing and rendering, the resulting video looks like crap compared to original. I did a test run of a short clip with no editing whatsoever and rendered as a MPEG2 to upload to a webpage and it still looked horrible compared to the original. The iPhone files are Quicktime .MOV video files. Ive had no other problems before with other sources and just wondering what Im missing. Ive tried googling and cant find any help. Thanks.

There is no project preset for 1080p24 in Premiere Elements 7. It is not until Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 that we do find the opportunity.
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p24
So, what to do with a 1080p24 (Stereo audio) and Premiere Elements 7 and end up with a 1080p24 export to file saved to the computer hard drive.
    (1) Import with the project preset of
    NTSC
    AVCHD Full HD 1080i30
The prime objective of the project preset is to direct the program to set up the 1920 x 1080 space in the Edit area monitor. This project preset will serve that purpose until you want to do frame by frame by frame editing which you are unlikely to be involved in.
    (2) When it comes to export the 1080p24 Timeline content
    Share
    Personal Computer
    MPEG
    with Presets = HD 720p
then under the Advanced Button/Video Tab, customize the Export Settings to look exactly like what you see in the screenshot below: If the screenshot does not present clear enough, please click on it to bring up a clearer view.
Please check out my blog post on Premiere Elements 24p features.

Now with regard to what you seem actually to have....
    1. Both cell phones (iPhone 5 and 5S) are probably giving you 1080p with a variable frame rate up to 30 frames per second. Depends often on the lighting during video recording with the device.
    a. If you are having problems with this video, then take it into HandBrake before importing it into Premiere Elements 7 in order to change the variable frame rate to a constant one. The MediaInfo video audio properties readout program will give you the minimum, mid range, and maximum frame rate used in recording the video. Go with the mid range reading.
    http://handbrake.fr/
MediaInfo | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net
Even the latest Premiere Elements versions can have problems with variable frame rates of cell phones and those other devices that work with a variable frame rate.
    b. Let us assume that you have a 1080p with the mid range 24 progressive frames per second used for these cell phone recordings.
Import the 1080p24 with the constant frame rate into Premiere Elements 7 with the project preset cited in example above.
    c. Then use the export route that I described in the example above.
If your iPhone videos have frame rates other than 24 progressive frames per second, we can discuss them individually.
Do any of your source videos for these project need rotation. Other topic for discussion. For now, the above principles should apply to your video. Handling of portrait oriented video in a landscape oriented video is other topic for discussion. But, let us see how you work through the above.
    Thanks.

  • IPhone video has a strange FPS.

There has been a lot written about "choppy playback" of iPhone video once it's trasferred to another device.  It seems to me that the problem is in the frame rate used in the original video.  In Quicktime, I'm seeing an actual frame rate on playback of something like 18 FPS, when the file is stamped with 30 FPS.  When will this issue be resolved by Apple?  And for now, what is the best work around?  I've already begun experimenting with different settings during export from Quicktime.  Choosing iPhone as a setting creates a .m4v file, but the image size is greatly reduced, and the conversion is very time consuming.  Howeber the frame rate issue seems to be resolved--no  more choppy playback and the new file is playing back at a true 30 FPS (or maybe it's 29.97 but that's another topic).
It's been said before but I'll say it again:  it's beyond belief that Apple can release hardware and software that is this buggy!  Even for the most novice user, this is totally unacceptable.  They love to say "it just works".  Well it doesn't.
    Anyone with me on this?

AFIK, this is all fairly late model Apple hardware and was top of the line when I bought it 3 years ago.  Also keep in mind I don't have any issues playing back any other HD content.  Only files created on the iPhone 4s.
It doesn't matter if I have other apps running or not--the symptom persists.
I've observed two seemingly identical video files created on my iPhone 4s (using Get Info in Quicktime all parameters are equal) where one plays smoothly and one has the jumpiness.  Other times a file that had been playing smoothly starts acting jumpy again after reopening.  Bear in mind, the jumpiness doesn't behave like a CPU being overloaded, but is a very regular rhythm--about a jump every second.  I would expect an overloaded CPU to produce more random symptoms during playback.  I'm now seeing the jumpiness even in the videos I exported using Picasa.  Keep in mind, I did not "upload to Picasa Web Albums" but just exported to another location on my internal hard disk.  The specs on the exported files look the same as the original including the data rate, which is 21.7 mbits/sec.  In other words, they were not optimized for streaming.  Why they played back smoothly before and not now is baffling.
Some have speculated that movies created with the camera upside down maybe have some extra data attached in order to play back in the correct orientation.  However in most cases my problem files were recorded "right side up" and still they have the jerkiness upon playback.
Finally, you state that 720p is the default iPhone image size but these files appear to be 1080 (progressive or interlaced I don't know).  Isn't that what 1920 x 1080 implies?  And again, the data rate is 21.7 mbits (is that the same as the bitrate, which you said should be 11 Mbps?).
Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

  • Pre Lion iPhone videos show Thumbnail but can't play - new video generates Unsupported Video Format popup, no thumb but will play via quicktime

    This is really frustrating -
Over the last year I have been uploading all of my photos and occasional iPhone video to Aperture 3 (latest version all patches in place).    Aperture would recognize the video, create a thumbnale and otherwise treat it nicely.
Now, since upgrading to Lion I find that though I can "see" the old videos in their folders or projects and the associated Thunbnale, I can't play them - I either get the spinning color wheel and then nothing or Aperture will crash and report an error relating to Quicktime (sorry don't have an error code at the moment).
If I try and export a video I can - but what I get also can't be played by Quicktime - just a black screen.  When I hit Play - the scroll bar moves, but there is no sound or video.
From Final Cut Pro X, I can imoprt this exported video file and see that it appears complete - but FCPX uses it's own playback elements.
If I shoot a new video on my iPhone, I find that I can see the thumbnale in the import option of Aperture when looking at the phone, but once imported I get a Popup telling me that it is an "Unsupported Video Format" - "Do you want to open this video clip with QuickTIme Player?"   If I hit Open then the clip does play, but the thumbnale remains a black square with the warning Exclamation Point.
I have also had some issues with Lion Mail crashing when trying to play a video made on an iPhone and sent to me via email.   Seems more likley to be a Lion / Quicktime issue then an Aperture and Mail issue - but who knows.
I spent 2.5 hours of quality time with the Genius bar this morning.  We reinstalled Lion and after that the suggestion was to trash and re-install Aperture, but that would require my disc and of coruse a trip home.   Mail doesn't seem to still have the issues with iPhone movies that it had - but Aperture is still not happy.
Did as instructed and dragged Aperture 3 to the trash, did the empty trash option, restarted and reinstalled.   Then did a software update to catch the new update for Aperture and it found that.   Interestingly when I did start it up after that it DID NOT ask me for my key - so clearly some elements were left over.
Now upon retstarting Aperture 3 once again I find that I can still see my old movies (their thumbnails show up) but I still can't play them.   The new test movie is there but still generates the popup regarding it being an Unsupported Video Format.
And it's not just my iPhone.   Video sent via email from another iPhone can play as an attachment, or when dragged and dropped to the desktop, but once imported into Aperture is once again proclaimed to be an Unsupported Video Format.
Hoping someone out there knows how to resolve this....

For some reason it just started to work now. Have no idea what didn't work before.

  • What's the best way to import and manage iPhone video?

I don't really want to use iPhoto for importing video - it doesn't seem like it's built with that in mind even though it's the default option for importing both photos and videos. It doesn't have very good (if any) options for filtering just videos or just photos, either when viewing or importing. And I don't want to have videos all jumbled in with photos in my iPhoto library.
I also don't really want to use iMovie every time I want to import videos. I know it's designed for video, but it's far more of an editing app than a management app and I don't want to be editing all my videos or loading up iMovie just to browse them.
I considered Clipstart but it commits a cardinal sin when it renames all my videos in the Finder to a sequential numbering that begins at 01.mov for each new day, creating hundreds and thousands of identically titled movies in the video library, albeit in their own folders, but chaos if you want to search in Spotlight or anything.
So I'm left with Image Capture, which gives me complete control of what I import and where it goes. The problem is that it too doesn't offer a filter for seeing just the videos or just the photos on my iPhone. My photos are all being imported automatically by Photostream so I only want to grab the videos. If I set 'view by width' it seperates out the videos because they have no width tag, but then they aren't displayed by date order so I can't easily find the new videos I've not imported before.
    So... what do you do?

That's exactly the sort of crafty workaround I like. I didn't know they were all tagged, but that would definitely work. I'd still love a dedicated app that did it really well, or more love given to that side of things in iPhoto. iMovie is too hefty for just managing them.
Is iPhoto properly built to handle management of iPhone video, by the way? I didn't want to use it because it didn't seem like it was, and also because I sync my iPhoto library with Dropbox and video would more than treble the size of the library so I manage it from the Finder mostly, importing clips to iMovie if I do want to edit something (rarely).

  • How can you get your iPhone videos to compress to one video instead of 5 different frames?

How can you get your iPhone videos to compree to one video instead of different frames

It sounds like you to 5 separate videos. If you start recording, then stop it, then start it again, you will have 2 videos. Not 1. As for splicing them together, you will need a video editing package for your PC. I don't know if Windows Movie Maker (or whatever they're calling it now) can handle this or not. On a Mac, I'd say just use iMovie.

  • I wish the ipad video player was the same as the iphone video player...

The ipad video player is not as good as the iphone video player.
I'm specifically referring to how it handles chapters and episode info.
    1 - episode info
With the iphone, when I'm looking at the list of videos, in addition to the show title, it displays the season and episode #.
With the ipad, it only shows show title.  And since episodes are for some reason sorted by show title, it's impossible to play the show back in episode # order, since it's not displayed...
    2- chapters
With the iphone, when a video with chapter marks is being played back, as part of the play controls, there is a chapter option so you can see what and where the chapter marks are and can easily go to them directly.
With the ipad, this chapter option is not there.  You can only get to a specific chapter by forwarding chapters one-by-one.
No idea why the two players can't have the same functionality.
Hopefully someone from apple can see this and consider it for a future update.
(is this the best way to get them info/suggestions for future updates???)

Actually, this is the best way to get feedback to Apple for this. Apple employees only moderate this forum for abuse and violations of the terms of use.
