IPhone vs. Blackberry/Palm OS

I really like the iPhone. I’ve had my phone for 3 weeks now, and it is just so friendly and intuitive to use. The high res screen shows the icon and the text of the button you want. That makes it so easy and fast to launch an application. Beats the Blackberry hands down on the organizational structure and ease of use. It’s the first device that does the things I need it to do as a personal and business organizer in an easy and bright-colored way, including notes, whole-page Web browsing; contacts, email, alarm and timer, Google Maps, camera, calendar, SMS testing, phone, and…iPod. I love the two finger feature of pressing, flicking and pinching, instead of tapping, tapping, and clicking nested menus, as is typical on Palm and Windows devices. Blackberry began to solve this problem with the scroll wheel. On the iPhone, every action seems to have been thought of my Apple software engineers – from beautifully scrolling through contacts and email, to nicely flying emails into a folder for filing. The phone is beautiful and easy to use. The form factor is great: beats the old Newton 2000. To be sure, there are a few features other phones have that are left out of the iPhone, but they are not deal breakers for me. The integration of the component parts is seamless and transparent. It’s just a joy to use. And, it works great on my Mac. I’m not sure about Windows users. It seems that a lot of Windows users are testing the iPhone and complaining that the iPhone doesn’t do this like a Blackjack, or a Blackberry. Well, what it does do to me is by far and away the best, most elegant implementation on a Mac of useful features, I am very pleased with it.
+ Phone – Contacts are so easy to scroll to, or just pressing a letter on the alphabet makes the 300 or so contacts I have a joy to flow through. Since there is no hard keyboard taking up screen space, the keypad comes on full screen. It is so easy to see the numbers.
+Visual Voicemail –I really enjoy and find useful having all my voice mails there for me to just press and listen to. And I can more accurately remember who has called me. Wonderful personal business tool! I don’t nor have ever used wireless sync on a Blackberry over Exchange Server, so I can’t comment on that, although, it sounds like a nice feature to use in a large business.
+Mail – The best email reader I’ve ever used on a phone. Nice big fonts, 0-5 line preview. I have mine set on 3 lines. Nice clear, bold titles. Inline graphic and html viewing is superb! Plus, you can pinch and view graphics larger. Nice and easy to use. Imap mail seems to work best for me, as it is easy to file emails. No push except for Yahoo email, but that is actually fine as I was annoyed by push email. At night next to my bed the phone would vibrate whenever I received an email, and sometimes it would wake me up. I don’t need to know I’ve gotten an email at 4:00am.
+Auto correct in typing – this makes typing actually faster than it was on my Blackberry. Regional sensing recognition means I don’t have to actually type each word exactly; the iPhone predictive text operates pretty good, well enough that I just type a word and press the space bar…and almost every word I type completes accurately.
+Web browsing – Safari works great, much better than the Blackberry’s text only pages. To be fair, I could get some graphics on the BB browser, but it took so darn long to load over Edge, that I just gave up on Web browsing. The iPhone uses Wifi, so I can navigate real Web pages sitting on the couch. Nice! I actually use it over Edge, and I’m impressed with the whole Web page view. Also, my bookmarks are synced with my computer bookmarks, so I can make an iPhone set on my laptop, and use that as a set of links to navigate on the iPhone. Easy.
+iPod – Podcasts, songs, and videos – I use this iPod more than every other one I’ve owned for the simple reason that there is a phone attached to the iPod, so when a call comes in, I just press the answer button on the headset. With a blackberry, I’ve got to pull out the earbuds from my iPod, than either put the headset on for the phone, or the Bluetooth headset, and then answer the bloody thing. The iPhone allows me the freedom to listen to music or podcasts and answer the phone, and the music or podcast slowly fades away, and brings the caller’s voice up. Very nice and easy to use. Plus, I’ve watched a couple of TV shows, Star Trek for example, and they looks so good in widescreen. Nice touch.
+Stocks – so fast and easy to see up to date stock quotes.
+Google Maps – works just like on the Blackberry, but nice touches added like the pins that come flying in. Functionality is the same as on the Blackberry, but with touch screen access, it might be easier. It’s taking me a while to get used to the touch screen for everything as opposed to using a scroll wheel on the BB.
+SMS Texting – Just like iChat. I like the color-coded bubbles, and being able to see the entire set of conversations I’ve had with each phone number.
+Calendar – easy to read and syncs accurately with my Mac using iCal. The one drawback is no to-do lists! That’s the first serious shortcoming. I have to enter in a to-do as an appointment, and if I do not do it on Tues at 9am, then I have to edit it to see it on another day. That is a drawback.
+Photos – excellent, easy to use, and elegant scrolling through photos. Syncs perfectly with my Mac and iPhoto. I know exactly what photos are going to be on the phone. Again, pinching and flicking is so intuitive, easy, and enjoyable to use.
+Camera – easy to take pictures. Syncs easy with iPhoto. You need a lot of light for photos to come out nice and sharp. So it’s not a great camera, but functional with poses and enough light.
+Notes – I will say that with no note sync to the computer, this is a serious drawback.
+Battery life appears good. I get about 2-3 days, the same as on my Blackberry. But I’m also listening to Podcasts of Science Friday and On Point from WBUR in Boston. Great shows.
+Alarm and Timer – I use the timer feature to conduct meetings. The sounds are so pleasant to wake to. I’ve got it set on Harp, and it is nice and soft to wake to or end a meeting. Again, enjoyable to use is a key feature for me.
I use the iPhone much more than my Blackberry due to ease of sync with my Mac. I connect to iTunes, and my podcasts, music, photos, calendars and contacts sync automatically. Accurately. I wish there were to-do lists and note sync. That’s about the only two drawbacks I have. Palm and Blackberry didn’t have the best software for Mac synchronization. If you’re a Windows user, I can’t comment on syncing, and I’ve never owned a Windows Mobile device. If you’re a Mac user, the syncing is superb. You know that iCal and iPhoto will be synced accurately.

I have had the Blackberry for a number of years, and was even a featured user with it. But the iphone is a step up.
PDF files in the iphone can be read but not with blackberry.
I have not seen if the powerpoints can be read, will try that next -- although there may be some third party software.
Brought the iphone to Anchorage, Alaska, and the only reason I used my powerbook was when I wanted to type something. Next trip I don't think I need the laptop at all -- and that will save my shoulder from an early rotator cuff surgery.
The weather on iphone is much better and easier than Blackberry.
I would like push email, however. You can turn off notification.
Voicemail is a dream. Easy to see, to use and works very well.
Photos are easy, and fun -- and only wish they had a flash.
The Clock allows multiple time zones.
It would be nice if the weather icon showed the temperature in a selected city, on the home page.
Calendar is the easiest calendar I have used. I wish it would push through the internet -- then it would be almost perfect.
What would be more perfect-- faster data stream-- EVDO instead of Edge. The only downfall. But browsing on iphone is so much easier than blackberry.
So, take the Airport Express and a cable and the iphone will work perfectly in a hotel room.
Next -- powerpoint or keynote slides.

Sounds like your friend didn't disable iMessage on his/her iphone before switching.  Have your friend do the following:
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
    Click on "edit products"
Click on the "x" to the right of his/her old iPhone.
    Click "unregister"
This should unregister it with the iMessage server, which will allow you to send texts as normal SMS.
On your iPhone make sure you have Settings>Messages>Send As SMS set to ON.

  • Oracle CRM Email Integration including iphone and Blackberry

We add with CRM Gadget a free email integration.
This integration is working with every mail application including iphone & blackberry.

We are having the same problem - when the iphone checks mail, the account locks up and other email clients are unable to access the same account for 15-20 minutes. Not a very efficient business tool. This isn't just a mail.app problem either, it happens with Eudora too. Blackberry and Motorola users are not experiencing the same issues - they're able to check simutaneously with other devices. Maybe there is something that can be done on the mail server end?

  • Safe to charge iPhone with Blackberry USB adapter?

I have the small wall-plug-to-USB adapter from my Blackberry that looks like the one below. Is it safe to use a standard Apple 30 pin + USB connecter (pictured below the Bberry connector) with it to charge my iPhone 4S? Otherwise I have to buy a second Apple-branded connector to have one at both home and work.

usb is 5volt ios devices can charge with anything that provide 5volts
if the charger don't follow the usb std and provide 50volts the phone will explode

  • Texting between Iphone and Blackberry

    Hello,
This may sound like a silly question, but my wife has a blackberry and told me that whenever I send her a text with my iphone, it ends up in her "mailbox" so the text is treated like email (which is funny because her texts always show up quickly in my Iphone text application). She showed me the Blackberry messenger application that allows her to have instant text conversations with other Blackberry users. Are there any third party applications for both of our phones that would allow us to have simple/immediate text conversations? I am sure this is old news to everyone, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

On the BlackBerry, the 'Messages' icon is a catch-all inbox. It collects messages from any messaging account linked to the device (email, text messages, mms, PIN messages, etc.)
If she wants to separate her text messages into a different location, that's actually quite simple to do.
On the device, change this setting:
*Messages > Options > General Options > SMS and Email Inboxes = Separate*
This will create a new icon on the device specifically for text messages.

  • Should I purchase iPhone or Blackberry for this task?

I specifically want a phone to receive emails (maybe 4 per day) and access websites to enter data (say 4 times per day). I've been told that for those who want to do this regularly the iPhone freezes and is slower than the Blackberry. Almost all spoken to say that for emails, the Blackberry is superior. Any comments or suggestions please?

If you are talking about that low a number of emails the speed is not going to matter so the BB will not give you any added benefit. To be compared to the BB you need a push email account on the iPhone which you can get by signing on to MobileMe, use a yahoo push mail account (free) or an exchange account.
As far as data entry, I would go with the iPhone due to the larger screen than some BBs, touch screen, etc. Safari has been pretty stable for me and I have done some data entry with it.

  • Iphone Vs. Blackberry data usage

I used to own a Blackberry Bold 9000. Then I switched to the iPhone. My carrier is Rogers Wireless. My 500 MB data plan started falling short. Rogers says the BB is more economical in handling data. For example compared to a smartphone like the iPhone, one can handle 5,000 emails on the BB compared to 2,500 on a smartphone in the same 500 MB. Is this correct?

    Tamara wrote:
BB routes everything through their servers and optimizes it so you have "lower" data usage since they do it on their end.
The iPhone uses data the same way a computer would. There is nothing in between that prefilters and compresses everything.
Great post, I did not know this, good information. I learn something new here all the time. Thanks Tamara!

  • Just switched to Iphone from blackberry yesterday

Everyone told me when you delete e-mail from iphone it still shows up on your desktop. I am finding this not to be the case. I deleted some items last night and today they are not on my desktop, On the blackberry it asks you if you want to delete desktop and handheld device or just handheld device, does the Iphone have this option?

It should, but you have to make sure it is set up in iCloud that way. Provided that you use iCloud e-mail on your new iPhone....
What provider do you use for your e-mail, anyway?
    Different providers behave different way.
In general, if you use IMAP e-mail, whatever happens on your phone happens on your desktop and on the server all at the same time (with a bit of delay) - they all should be in sync.
Whether a message remains in Trash or goes away for good needs to be set up on the server (Yahoo, GMail, iCloud, AOL). You don't set it up on your phone.
I know, that if I uncheck the box for storing deleted messages in iCloud, they vanish after I delete them and bypass Trash altogether.

  • Buying a 3G Iphone (Original Blackberry User)

Hey wassup everyone....im new to this forum and im very interested in purchasing an Apple 3G Iphone. Comming from a Blackberry Curve, my expectations are very high for the iphone and i had a few questions:
-WHat are a couple of the pros and cons of the new iphone?
-IS it worth leaving a blackberry behind?
-And simply, is it worth the money?
...Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have been a blackberry user for years, and indeed still am, I have a company Curve. We have about 1000 Blackberry users, and as CIO of that company I insisted we keep the blackberries.
I expect to leave the company, and needed a personal phone with good e-mail. I ended up buying the iPhone. I spent a lot of time considering the Storm, or even the Bold, but ended up with the iPhone.
Good decision? Not completely sure. But so far I think so.
With respect to company usage, Blackberry is a better choice. Not so much because of individual use, but all the policy and control and security issues are better suited to a corporate environment. And frankly e-mail has more control - filters, wireless activation, etc. And there is no question in my mind that a company benefits from ONE platform, two is almost twice the expense from a labor perspective, if not more. And if I have to pick one, Blackberry.
But for a personal phone, so far I prefer the iPohone. The browser is no comparison better, exchange (which I use) and active sync actually is BETTER than blackberry for personal use -- faster, more consistent reconciliation, easier to set up.
I had no real interest and did not use tasks and notes -- those are two things Blackberry does and iPhone does not. I didn't care; others might care a lot.
Blackberry has deeper applications available, and you can write your own without waiting for the blessing of Apple. Me? Who cares -- I like that they are vetted, I like the stability that come with it. 10,000+ applications are plenty.
The form factor on the iphone is better (at least relative to the bold or curve).
I don't like the propietary cables, etc. Pain in the ... but it's not a big deal.
At first I was irritated that you couldn't replace the battery or have a sprea don the iphone, but I really thought about it, and realized while I had a spare on the curve I had never actually needed it (I will admit the curve battery lasts longer).
The camera on the curve is MUCH, MUCH better. No comparison. I have a Nikon for taking real pictures, don't care. Some might care a lot. Camera *****. (same pixels by the way, and I actually had them swap my phone by the way, because it was so bad - no change).
Music, videos - no comparison. iPhone. Though frankly I could care less.
User interface -- again, no comparison - iPhone. MUCH nicer. Both neat and more usable EXCEPT -- I do miss the keyboard a bit. Maybe 20% of the time. I'm getting better at the virtual keyboard, if it was landscape I would be happy (I have a 3rd party tool, but that's not quite the same).
So far so good, I don't think you will be disappointe,d but it is different. And there are some very definite pro's on the blackberry side.

I have an iPhone on which I can read my personal e-mail using IMAP. I also have a Blackberry to which all my office e-mail goes. Can I read my office e-mail on my iPhone i.e. is there any way of connecting my iPhone to my office's Blackberry server ? The air-time service to both devices is provided by the same company (O2 in the UK).
