Iphone was stolen... need some suggestions

Hello everyone!
Well, my iPhone 3G was just stolen a few days ago. I called up AT&T and had them suspend the account. I have had the phone for 1 year, and when i call up AT&T they say it will cost $320 dollars for another iPhone 3G 16 GB version!. Would it be possible to purchase a used iPhone 3G from ebay or something and then a... i dunno, is there any work around so i don't have to pay that much money?

Funny enough is the fact that many stolen phones are resold privately. Hence your planned purchase to save money after having your phone stolen might be feeding the demand to steal more.
See what Apple is selling refurbished phones for. That will given you a benchmark for pricing.

U should call ATT&T and tell them that ur iPhone was stolen and u need to cancel or block your stolen iPhone account so they cannot use it and transfer the same number to a new iPhone ( or other phone)..

If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. Quickest place to look is in the label attached to the box the phone came in.
Not around anymore? Maybe the carrier you used the phone with can facilitate the information. Also, when under contract, the IMEI is listed in the paperwork. Apple, alas, is quite unhelpful with that information.

I received a message saying that the phone was offline and that the data would be deleted as soon as it connected to the internet. My concern is that I may not have set the device to use the service beforehand. Is there a way to find out via icloud?

If you have Find My Phone enabled then put your phone in Lost Mode. If Find My Phone is not enabled then there is little you can do to prevent access to it. Unless you let anyone know your Apple ID's password, the thief should not be able to change it.

How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back? Are there other ways the theif can use it. I was told once they put in a new sim card and use it, whatever software the police have, it will show up.

Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes. If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.

Can only be done if your carrier offers blacklisting. Some do, some don't. So, report the loss to your carrier. If your carrier does not offer blacklisting, the phone can be restored & reactivated.
Apple does not maintain a database of lost/stolen Apple products & will not help you in anyway to locate your phone or block it.
