IPhone, WiFi, and Edge

I am using my iPhone in two different WiFi zones. Both assign IP addresses based on my MAC address. One also requires a password (which I successfully entered, and the iPhone remembered). The signal where I work in both places is maximum strength as acknowledged both by the bars on my iPhone as well as those on my laptop which has no problem with the signal in either location. In the one case, I am as close as ten feet away from the wireless router. The WiFi icon appears in the top status bar on the iPhone (although sometimes I have to enter/exit Airplane mode to get it there), it remains there when I bring up Safari, but the minute I start to traverse web pages, the WiFi icon disappears and is replaced by the Edge icon. The only way I have successfully been able to get the WiFi icon back is to either enter and exit Airplane mode, or power cycle the iPhone. Does anyone know how I can keep the iPhone "talking WiFi"?

As long as the WiFi icon is there, these all have the settings I would expect: I see the IP address I am supposed to have, the correct router, subnet mask, etc. As soon as the Edge icon comes back, however, they aren't. The IP address begins with "169.254...", and the subnet mask goes to 255.255.0.0. The router and DNS boxes are then blank.

  • Podcast syncing via WiFi and EDGE

It sure would be nice if the iPhone could update podcast feeds via WiFi and EDGE. This would be great for more time-sensitive podcasts such as news podcasts and/or those updated on a daily basis.

While it is theoretically possible to podcast over wifi, edge is not a timing sensitive protocol. The data gets there when it gets there and that is it. Even if edge had enough bandwidth to run the podcast (which it generally doesn't) it wouldn't be a pleasent experience.

  • How many miters is the iphone wifi and why dosnt the wifi atchive long rang networks

how many miters is the iphone wifi and why dosnt the wifi atchive long rang networks

I don't understand your question at all. I think you are asking what the range is for WiFi on an iPhone. It meets the WiFi standard, which is 40 meters if there are no obstructions, much less if there is anything at all between the phone and the router. My iPhone meets the standard.

  • IPhone Wifi and Bluetooth interference when used simultaneously

I am presently using AirFoiI to stream audio from my PC to my iPhone. AirFoil uses the same protocols as AirPlay. AirFoil/AirPlay streams an Alac audio codec using a bandwith of 1,50 Mbs on average irrespective of the audio codec and bit rate of the source file.
The audio stream received on my iPhone through WiFi is send over simultaneously to my Bluetooth speaker.
When using AirFoil/AirPlay, I regularly hear distortions at the beginning of a track and also randomly when a track is playing. The distortions are a lot more when I move the iPhone around.  I am almost 100% sure that these sound distortions are because of Bluetooth interference on the iPhone itself when simultaneously receiving an audio stream from AirFoil/AirPlay and sending an audio stream over bluetooth to my speaker.
I also have done some tests using "Net Meter" and "TCP-view" from Sysinternals on my Windows 7 PC.  On "Net Meter" I have never seen any WiFi drop outs or distortions regarding my home network.
My bluetooth speaker supports the A2DP AAC audio codec. This was an important feature for me before I bought the device because the AAC audio codec provides normally a relatively good audio quality over Bluetooth. At the time it did not occur to me that there might be a possible Bluetooth interference coming from my iPhone itself. I presumed that the Bluetooth on the iPhone would use a 2,4 Ghz RF channel not in use by WiFi so that WiFi and Bluetooth used on the same device simultaneously could never distort each other. I was clearly wrong.  Put shortly, the problems I encounter are presumably solely caused by the firmware/software on my iPhone. I hope this will eventually be resolved with some future iOs 8 updates. There were indeed many people having Bluetooth issues since iOs 8.
I know the best solution would be to wire my speaker optically with an AirPort Express or an Apple TV.  I have not yet decided between the two.
Even when there exists a "wired" solution, I think an expensive device such as an iPhone should be able to make sure that there is never interference between WiFi and Bluetooth when used simultaneously on the SAME device/iPhone.
I hope that some specialists will give their views on my "nonprofessional" analysis and some more in-depth information.

    Now will this work:
Airport extreme set to BOTH frequencies and my older wifi stuff like Iphone and printer will automatically connect via 2.4GHz and Macbook will connect to 5GHz so that it will not longe be disruppted by bluetooth?
Unfortunately, no one can predict exactly what will happen in advance with wireless and interference issues. Your chances will improve, though. It might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.
What if the Macbook will not connect automatically to the 5Ghz network because the 2.4 stream may be slightly stronger. Is there a way to force macbook to connect to 5Ghz?
Yes, use the option to assign a separate wireless network name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" your MacBook to that network.  The other 2.4 GHz devices will connect to the 2.4 GHz band.

  • Iphone wifi and what channel

what is the channel that the iphone recommends. just like the wii it wants i think 1 or 10. just today I started having problems with my wifi. I upgraded my routers firmware, i restarted both my iphone and router. I also even restarted the networking settings in my iphone and it was finally able to make a connection but not even worth using for some reason. I don't understand whats going on and thought it could maybe be a problem witht he signal?
    any help?

    I had the same issue.
This is what I did... Delete the network from your iPhone's wifi settings by clicking on that blue arrow icon on the right of the network name. Then click on forget this network. Go to your wireless router and perform a restart. Turn off the iPhone and turn it back on. Go back to the wifi settings and reselect your network and you should be good.
Essentially restart both devices and add the iPhone as a new connection.
this will force the Iphone to chose a different IP address and not the one it keeps trying to use..

  • Iphone wifi issues & edge

alright, here is whats going on: the iphone is connected to a wifi signal but doesn't have a regular cell signal so it cant use wifi. i try to use safari or youtube or any other internet app but it says that it couldnt connect using edge. shouldnt it be trying to use the wifi signal which is full bars? is there something i have o do inside the wifi preferences like dealing with the ip address or the http proxy? thanks for all the help

Try removing the SIM card and see if you can connect via Wifi. I get the same message, but then WiFi connects with no issues.

  • Iphone - wifi- and itunes

i am connected to my wifi...but when i touch the purple itunes icon on iphone...says i am not connected....what am i doing wrong???

    Hey meggie,
You'll need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network and see the Wi-Fi icon in the top menubar to access the iTunes Wi-Fi music store.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305975
Make sure you can browse web pages on the Internet using Safari when the Wi-Fi icon is present.
Then tap the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store icon on the Home screen as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1491
    This article provides troubleshooting tips.

  • Iphone, wifi and mail

Continue to be puzzled why some wifi sites will connect with IE and other web sites but not with mail servers.Including the gmail server. As well as my New Zealand mail servers. Sometimes works, often doesn't.
    Any suggestions?
Currently travelling - mail downloaded successfully in Perth wife but won't connect in Johannesburg airport. But Facebook etc does connect.
    Irritated and puzzled.
    Ron

Just because you connect to wifi doesn't mean that wifi provider doesn't block some (or most) ports.
Especially for free public wifi, it's not uncommon for providers to block everything except port 80 outbound, and all inbound traffic that isn't part of an established connection, for security reasons and to reduce the chances of worms/viruses spreading.
So, that's probably it. Facebook and other apps that use site web apis still connect via the standard http/web ports.

  • Email only works on Wi-Fi and Edge, not on 3G

My husband and I both have the iPhone 4. We run different versions of iOS (6.1 and 6.1.3 ) We both use different email providers (I'm with Gmail, he is not) but neither of us can send or receive email via 3G, only via WiFi and Edge.
Our 3G is definitely working because we can use it to browse the web, run Pandora etc.
    Things we've already tried:
    - Close all apps and restart phone
    - Change Fetch/Push settings
    - Reset  Network settings
Like I said, the only thing we have in common is the ATT data account, so it's not our email providers or iOS.

Update: The problem seems to have corrected itsself (after 5 days of dealing with the issue)

  • Problems with 8220 WiFi and battery

I'm not sure if these 2 problems are related. I've had a 8220 for 11 months and notice my battery life has really deteriorated the last few days. at the same time accessing WiFi from my phone is not as reliable. I know there is no problem with my Wifi as I have no problem accessing it from my laptop from the same connection.
Is this problem related to my battery? or are there other ways to improve WiFi connections from my 8220.
    thanks

I had exactly the same problem with WiFi calls (see my old posts on dropped calls).  I tested my phone in another WiFi location (in a coffee shop) and didn't have problems.  Even though my computer recognized the signal, my phone dropped the calls.  I changed my router and verified that all phones jacks (except the router) were using DSL filters.  Since then, the problem disappeared (except when I synch music).
When outside, the phone will periodically drop calls moving between WiFi and edge networks.  However, I usually turn off the WiFi network anyway to conserve batteries.  While at home, the WiFi connection is more reliable if I turn off the edge network so the phone stays on WiFi and doesn't look for another network.  By default, I set my preferences to WiFi at home, so even if I forget to turn off the edge network, it still looks for WiFi.

  • IPhone WiFi off and on

    Hey folks,
I have a 1st gen iPhone (for now, new one is on "direct fulfillment" whatever the **** that means w/ ATT), and I upgraded to 2.0 to get a taste of the apps. There seems to be a problem now with it's connection to my router. If i bring up Setting -> WiFi, it shows my router and the checkmark that it's connected, and i'll see the wifi symbol in the top bar, and it stays there, shows full signal, until i try something that actually involves using it, and it reverts to edge. It does this every time now, i've tried resetting the phone, the router, airplane mode on and then off, to no avail... any ideas?

in short, I was putting in the wrong password when I was connecting my iPhone to the network. Even though I was entering in the wrong password, the iPhone would place a check mark next to my wireless connection and would temporarily and frequently say it's connected. But when I would click on any icon on the home page, my iPhone would switch from wifi to 3g or edge. Once I figured out I had the wrong password, I ientered it in and haven't had the problem any more; the iPhone connects and stays connected to wifi unless I do something that can't be done over wifi such as making a call or text messaging, which then it will switch to 3g or Edge, but shorly returns to wifi after finishing.

  • HT3529 My wife and I both have an iphone.   We initially created it under her apple id.   We will receive each others text messages from certain people not all.   Any ideas why and what we can do to stop it

My wife and I both have an iphone.  We initially set them up under one apple id account.  When we text sometimes we will receive each others text messages from others.   Example I will text a friend...she will not see my text but the reply comes to both of us.  It seems to be random which ones.  Any ideas how to correct this

    Yup, get your own AppleID.
The messages that are being sent to both phones are technically not text, they are Apple's iMessage. They use the data part, not the texting part. So if you have an iPad or a Mac computer, you can send/receive the iMessages there too.

  • How can i split up icloud account. its the same for my wife and i but i would like 2 separate accounts. we both have iphone 4

my wife and i both have iphone 4. they were set up with 1 icloud account. we now both have separate apple id's. I would like to set up a different icloud account on my phone with my apple id and password separate from my wife.

Decide which iPhone will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing Notes with iCloud, you'll also have to email your notes to yourself so they can be recreated in the new account as they cannot be migrated.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa).

  • My wife and I share the same iTunes account.  How can I setup a separate account for her iPhone using my iMac?

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.
