IPhone will get an iMessage, then reply as SMS, then iMessage again

Ever since I got an iPhone 6 with iOS 8 (and any version of iOS 8 released to date), I've had frustrating issues with the phone refusing to send things as an iMessage to other users that I KNOW have good service or are on WiFi.
I am sometimes in poor service areas, and that I understand.  My iPhone 4 sometimes had trouble sending iMessages from work, and it would fail, and I'd have to resend as a SMS.
However, even when I'm in an area with 5 bars of LTE or on a great WiFi connection at home...I still have trouble.  I can usually receive iMessages no problem in a good service area.  I can even get one as an iMessage, unlock the phone, and it will refuse to send as an iMessage - I either get "failed" or it just sends as a SMS straight away.  If I get the failed message, the phone doesn't even bother to attempt resending it when you hit "Try Again" like my iPhone 4 did.
I have tried resetting network settings multiple times, turning on/off iMessage, hard-resetting the phone, setting up the phone as a new phone, and de-registering/re-registering my iMessage account with the phone.  Curiously enough, my iPhone 4 on WiFi only still sends the message without a hitch EVERY TIME.
Is this just an iPhone 6/iOS 8 thing?

Oh...once it sends as a SMS, the next one will send as an iMessage with no problem at all.  I don't think I added that.

No, not until you manually enable FaceTime in settings:
    Setting > FaceTime > ON

  • All of a sudden this morning my iphone will not send imessages from my phone number but only from my email address. When I go to the settings for my imessages to choose where they are coming from my phone number is greyed out....Is there a way to fix this

All of a sudden this morning my iphone will not send imessages from my phone....

    Hi Chas869,
Hmm, that is strange that your phone number is greyed out. There are a few things that we can try. First would be to turn iMessages off, then back on. See if you are able to select your phone number. Then if that doesn't work, turn iMessages back off, then reset the network settings....settings>general>reset>reset network settings, this will reboot the phone. Don't worry, it won't delete anything from the phone, it simulates a battery pull. Once the device comes back on, then turn iMessages back on. Keep us posted if that works!

I recently changed from iPhone to Samsung.  My wife's iPhone will only use iMessage with my number.  I have deleted my old contact and still her phone will only send iMessage to my number.  How to I get her phone to send SMS to my number instead of iMessage?

Put your sim card in your wife's iPhone & turn iMessage off.

  • Unlock iphone will get lock again if i do reset all content and settings???

Unlock iphone will get lock again if i do reset all content and settings???

I do not understand you question. From the Users Guide.
    Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
What do you mean by unlock?

  • My iPhone constantly shuts down and then starts again automatically, and after about 1 or 2 min. again. Is there a way to reset or something?

I've an iPhone 3 and it happend for the first time yesterday. I had to shut down my phone for a theatershow, and when I started my phone again after the show, it constantly shut down and then started again... Is there a way to delete something or something? 'cause it's very annoying! Already thanks!

Your contacts should still be on whatever program you sync your iphone to (i.e. Outlook, address book).
The iphone is not a stand alone device. It is designed to be synced with a computer. If you have not been syncing with a compatible program, then you are out of luck. Your contacts are not included in the back-up because it is meant to be synced with your computer.
"Although iTunes backs up most of your iPhone and iPod touch settings, downloaded applications, and other information (Contacts, calendars, notes, images in the Camera Roll), your audio, video, and photo content are not included in the backup."

  • My iphone will shut off and then turn itself back on

I plugged my Iphone in( at60%) and then made a facetime call during the call I noticed my phone was still stuck on 60% after the call I unplugged the phone, plugged it back in nothing happend. So then I hard reset it and it said I had 97% then I decied to turn it off and back off and it went down to 92% now it keeps randomly shutting itself off and turning itself back on every 5-10 minutes. I tried restoring it but Itunes says it cant connect to the update server and to try again. What do I do?

You should try backing up the data, restoring the device as new and try if that solves the problem. NB: set up as NEW device, don't restore with backup, because a software issue will also be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, the device needs service.

  • The songs being synced to my iphone would get corrupted and then everytime i plugged in my ipod or iphone itunes said they needed to be restored but that didnt work so i uninstalled itunes and now when i try to install it it doesnt install.

Then my ipod and my iphone wouldnt sync and itunes said they needed to be restored to factory settings, I tried doing that a few times and it never would work, the restore would run into various errors and never work out. I recentlly tried uninstalling itunes to see if that would help but now when i try to install and download itunes it doesnt work and the install runs into an error.
Also my ipod is stuck in recovery mode but my itunes doesnt even read the fact that its there. Can someone please help.

What does the error message say? (Precise text, please.)

  • My iphone will show 1% and then 0 and go off.  I can't turn it off again because it shows the battery is dead.  When I plug in the charger for 5 or 10 seconds,  it might show 40% battery.  When I unplug it,  I have 40%!!  Why does it go dead for no reason

My iphone 5 battery life at the most inconvenient times drains down till the phone turns off.  When I plug in the charger for just 5 or 10 seconds,  it will often show 35 - 45% left!  I unplug the charger immediately and I have 45% battery life!  That means I always have to have a charger with me in case it quits!  I can't always do that.

The % counter isn't always accurate.
I'd reset the phone, which might help make it more accurate. (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears).
You might also try restoring the phone from a backup.

  • HT3529 iPad & iPhone not getting same iMessages

iMessages come in on my iPad that don't come to my phone (and visa versa).  As I look into why, I suspect it is because my Apple ID is different on the devices (one an iCloud email, the other a valid but legacy personal email).  If that's the cause how do I change it?  Likley as a result, I see different email addresses associated with each account.  Is there a way to get a merge?  I also likley pruchased items with one account but not the other.

I believe you need the same email address on both.

  • HT201210 I am trying to update the new ios6 software and I keep getting an error message saying: "iTunes could not backup the iPhone because the iPhone is corrupt or not compatiable with the iPhone.  Delete the backup then try again."

How do I delete the backup?  Will I loose all my information?

    Disable your firewall/security software.

  • For the past few days my iphone has not been able to get a proper 3g signal. I use vodafone and every 10 or so seconds my iPhone says no service and then searches again to find the 3 g signal. If I disable mobile data and 3g it works fine! what is wrong?

I have even reinstalled ios twice and still  it does not change the situation. What could have happened. My sim works fine in any other 3g device.
