IPhone won't change from iMessage to text message

My colleague had iPhone then had to get rid of it. He no longer gets my texts as my phone is still using iMessage to text him. I erased his cell number and re-entered it and that did not work. What can I do to make my iPhone use text messaging to him now?

He should have turned off iMessage on his old phone before getting rid of it. If he ever registered it with Apple, he might be able to do the following:
Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
Click on "edit products"
Click on the "x" to the right of the product.
Click "unregister"
Unregistering it often deactivates his number with iMessage.

I have a friend who switched from an iPhone to a GalaxyS4, so they don't get my iMessages anymore, and it won’t convert them to text message. We have delete the contact and added him as it was new and still it wants to set messages as an iMessage. We have even put the number in as mobile and not iPhone. My wife purchased the 5S and has also been happy but she and everyone else we know that has an iphone and used to send me imessages now can't get messages through to me easily because the default method is imessage. I've eliminated all of my devices on icloud, erased them from my apple id on the apple support page, and recreated the contact on my wife's phone (though I accept the problem is not on her end at all.)
Aside from accusing me of being an idiot for erasing and turning in my phone to Verizon without disabling imessage, does anyone have a constructive solution to the problem? My old iphone isn't coming back.

Sometimes while in the middle of a conversation, I have moved out of wifi area but my phone does not notice the change and still tries to send my messages via imessage, which causes them to get hung up and won't go through. Is there a way to switch it to text message manualy? This imessage doesn't seem to working very well.

your response doesn't help the overall problem. For anyone with no data plan and only using wifi like mel_222 and myself, the iphone will not be able to send a message to these people who the phone has recognized as having ios5 unless the phone has a wifi connection because it is an imesssage. I am having the same problem, hopefully someone will know how to switch it. Hopefully this clarifies for anyone who might be able to answer. Luckily I will have a data plan kick in in a week, but I am sure some people who buy the phone outright will be faced with this issue.

Ipod won't change from 'do not disconnect message', won't show up in itunes

My aunt has asked me to figure out how to get her ipod nano to work. So this is my story:
When I plug it into the usb port is says 'Do not disconnect'. The menu and other buttons are unresponsive. If I reset it, it will say do not disconnect again. It will show up in windows explorer but not itunes.
1. I checked out itunes, and it is itunes 4. (4.7.0.42) So I downloaded itunes 7 (you need itunes version 6 or better I think). I tried to install it but that was unsuccessful. I could not get past the 'stopping service' portion of the install. I got this message:
'error 1921. Service Ipod Serivce (iPodService) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient priveleges to stop system serices.
I got that error twice, once when my ipod was connected to the computer and without it connected.
2. I tried to reinstall from the cd. It said to connect the ipod to see if it needs formatting. I did and it was apparently formatting. Although it never finished after about 30 minutes I gave up and closed it down.
3. It appears to be charging because I get the battery with a lightning bolt when it is connected to the computer.
4. Periodically I will get this message:
The selected port, COM1, is not available at this time. HotSyncManager will open the port when it becomes available.
So how can I get the latest itunes installed correctly and how do I get the ipod to work? (right now it never says anything other than 'do not disconnect' and it doesn't show up in itunes)

I have found a solution.
The cd I was trying to format the ipod nano for was for a different ipod mini. So that is why I had problems formatting.
As for installing the itunes software: I found a troubleshooting page for it. There was a section that described uninstalling quicktime, ipod, and itunes programs and manually deleting files and restarting. That worked for me, after that I was able to install itunes 7 and I could use the ipod nano.

iMessages can be sent and received while not connected to wifi. They use your phone's cellular data connection, which may not be as fast as wifi in some instances. If you are having problems with iMessages not sending in some situations or to some recipients, try going to Settings > Messages and making sure "Send as SMS" is enabled.
Alternatively, you can manually opt to have an iMessage sent as a text message by holding down on the message (before it is delivered to the recipient) and choosing "Send as Text".

Call AppleCare and ask them to deactivate iMessage. It might take awhile to become effective.

If you are using a supported iPhone carrier, they usually do not charge for this. It is an international text to the UK server to activate iMessage and FaceTime. You need to take this up with your carrier. If you are not using a supported carrier, you will just have to deal with it if you want to use iMessage and FaceTime.

With Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to 'Lock Rotation' have you then moved the switch on the right-hand side of the iPad above the volume control 'off' ?
Or with the switch set to control 'notification mute' you should be able to unlock rotation via the far left of the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. I still have an iPhone, but haven't turned it on for weeks. And there's no SIM in it, so no cell service, just WiFi. When I turn it on after a prolonged period of having it off (weeks), a bunch of messages popup that should have been forwarded to my new phone (same phone number and carrier as when I was an iPhone user) but appear to sit in iMessage queue indefinitely instead.
I'm guessing it has to do with the link that's made when an iPhone first realizes that it's talking to another iPhone and defaults, for all future texts, to iMessage. You know, the green to blue switch. How does that association get undone?
Has anyone else seen this, and if so, is there a fix?

When did yours come out? what does the above show as model and minimum build?
You should have yoru OEM OS X DVD, not one from another Mac, or retail, though the last retail OS X DVD was a year ago 10.6.3.
If it installed, I don't see an issue unless the drive had corrupt directory etc.
What you need to do is repair your boot drive or restore from backup.
