IPhone won't play music imported from CDs or mp3s not downloaded from itunes

When I first downloaded iOS 7, all of the music I had in my iTunes synched to my iPhone, but now new CDs I just imported and previous songs I imported from CDs won't synch (I've tried over wifi and usb).  When I click on songs on my phone that were from CDs, they look as if they are going to play and then skip immediately.  Mp3s I downloaded do the same thing.  Mind you, everything was working fine until updating to iOS 7.0.4.  I've been looking around the forums and have found that problems like this are relatively common and it's a shame Apple hasn't done anything to fix it.
When my phone is hooked up and I click on "on this iPhone", it says the music from CDs and mp3s is on, but the titles come up gray with these litte circle things next to them
Just checking now, I noticed some songs I bought from iTunes are doing the same thing.
I tried manually synching, but when I click to drag the songs into my phone, the section that has music, movies, etc. just flashes and nothing happens.  I know something is wrong because I just put a ringtone onto my phone the same way.
Oh, I also noticed that when my iPhone is synching and the steps go through at the top it skips steps 3, 4, and sometimes 5 (The Apple symbol pops up instead then goes straight to 6 and 7) so I know it's not recognizing the fact I put a bunch of new music in iTunes. Also, when I look at the bar at the bottom that shows how much memory is on my phone, this shows up:
and that Documents and Data thing was not there before.
Can someone please give me ideas on how I can stop this rediculousness without buying a new phone?

Did you already try the suggestions mentioned in this article?

  • IPhone won't play music.

I have a new iPhone 5s that I set up from an iCloud restore. All of my music is showing up on the phone but none of it will play. It looks like it is downloading on to the device but its been almost 24 hours and only a few songs have downloaded. The songs that appear to have been downloaded also won't play though. Majority of this music has been purchased from the iTunes store.

I have this question too, however I upgraded to iOS 8.1. music won't play?

  • My iPod shuffle could be seen on iTunes, but it cannot be charged and don't play music. The battery light do not flash at all.

Like what I mentioned, the iPod do not work, it won't play music and the battery light do not flash.
But it shows in iTunes, and I could sync music into it.
I tried to reset all the settings of the iPod, and installed all the new software, but it does not work.
I don't know if it works before, my friend left it to me. I erased all the data she used before and syncronized all my music inside.
But it just never worked in my hand...
I really appreciate all feedbacks! Thanks and please answer this question if you have the similar situation!!

Are you using the USB docking cable that came with the iPod?  There are separate contact points for power and data, so it is possible for the cable to connect for data, but not for power.  Some third-party replacement cables may be of lower quality, if you do not have the original cable
However, it seems to be getting power, since the shuffle is operating when connected and you are able to sync when it is connected.  So I think your USB docking cable is working.
That leaves a problem with the USB port or a problem on the shuffle.
For the USB port, it may not be supplying sufficient power to charge the battery.  As a test, you should shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices, including hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the Mac is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the Mac.  Any difference...?
If that does not help, it may be a problem with the shuffle, such as a worn out battery.

  • Since i upgraded to mavericks from 10.6.8, cd's won't play or import

all cd's are now ejected--- won't play, or even ask if i want to import.... went from 10.6.8 to 10.9.3 in june... that's when this problem began. Went from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 a few weeks ago, thinking it might fix the problem--- but it didn't. (currently have iTunes 11.3).... also, 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo... 4gb 1067 mhz ddr3, if that helps...

    Sorry your question lingered, tomscot77.
The format changes to the forums in July seem to have caused a lot of upper-level helpers to leave the building, so you are getting fewer eyes on the issue. Thank you for bumping--entirely justifiable in this case!
CDs still won't play or import.... DVDs will play,
That is often a symptom of a dirty optical drive. Why it decided to show up immediately after a system upgrade, I can't say.
Try a drive cleaning disk. They are typically US$5-15 at office superstores, computer shops, and home entertainment centers. It is surprising how often this simple act "wakes up" dead drives, even those pronounced dead by an Apple service professional.
Another thing: is this behavior the same for both commercial CDs as well as burned ones? If only burned disks fail, that is an important bit of evidence. Not all blank disks are created equal!

  • How to set alarm on iPhone 5 to play music from a playlist?

I'd like to set alarm on my iPhone 5 to play music from a playlist or from a album in Music, i.e. when alarm goes off, it will play more than just one song like songs in a playlist. This setting option was present in my old iPods (iPod Classic and iPod 5th generation), but is not present in both new iPhone 5 and new iPod Touch. Or, does anyone know how to work around it? It would be nice to be woken up by one of my favorite playlists rather than having to listen to just one song over and over. Thank you. piamsakp

Tell Apple to add this ability:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
As far as the app goes, I don't Know, as I don't use it. Just know you need an app to do playlists.

My play lists and songs on iTunes and on my iPhone won't play.  They are light grey instead of black and nothing happens when I click on the songs.  All of the songs were either from CD's or from iTunes that I purchased. I have home sharing turned on. This is a new issue.  It used to work fine.  I tried restarting my iPhone and syncing with iTunes. Neither worked.  Please help!

Try delete those songs using iTunes by de-selecting and sync. After that mark those songs and sync again.

Try plugging it up to your computer and launching iTunes and either resetting it to factory settings or resetting to last sync. Hopefully it just noticing it's plugged up to iTunes will fix it. This happened to my friend once and all she had to do was plug it into her computer and that fixed it.

    Hey guys, here's my problem.
I had some major issues with OSX last week that a trip to the Apple Store couldn't fix. Their only advice was to save all my pictures, music, documents, etc. and reformat. I did that yesterday. I reinstalled everything and then downloaded all the most recent updates.
Today, I can play all the music I own in iTunes (music imported from CDs, bought from other sites, and music bought from iTunes itself). However, it won't play any of the music videos I have (all bought off iTunes).
I have authorized the computer again and again. When I try to open the videos in Quicktime it tells me that I don't have permission to play them and that I need to authorize the computer.
    I'm lost. Any help?

Yup, this Audio but no Video WAS exactly the same trouble I was having, on my MacBook and iMac but not the other 2 MacBooks. This was due to the speaker settings at the bottom right hand corner of the iTunes window. I do use multiple speakers via Airtunes, on the two that were having trouble but not the other two, and although the speakers were only set to the computer it still wouldn't play the video content.
Whilst the audio (of the music video) was playing I then went to reselect multiple speakers, which brought up the "*failure to connect to remote speakers network refused connection*" warning, then I unchecked the remote speakers to leave just the "Computer" and hey presto the video came to life.
Thank you Charles C n Miami and hope this extra info helps.
    Happy Music Video Watching
    Matt

My iPod Touch 5th Generation won't play music out loud. Why and what can i do to 'fix' it?

If you mean the headphones work but the speaker does not:
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • IMusic v10 won't play while importing CD and won't burn MP3

I upgraded my iMusic to v10 when I hooked up my new iPod.  Now I find that a new CD won't play while importing and the new software is preventing me from burning new MP3 versions of the music I have imported.  Help!!!

Has been this way for a while.
and the new software is preventing me from burning new MP3 versions of the music I have imported.
You can only burn an MP3 CD if you have created an MP3 version of the file. iTunes does not and has never created MP3 files on the fly when burning an MP3 CD.
If you import as AAC (the default), you must first create an MP3 then add the MP3 to a playlist and burn the MP3 playlist.

  • My Sony icf-cs15ip docking station won't play music ,

My Sony ICF-CS15iP docking station won't play music from my iPhone 4s which is on iOS 7 but it will play my music from my old iPod touch, can anyone help me with a fix or let me know if I'll just have to get a new docking station, thanks in advance!

@Gscott1979, I had the same problem with both my ICF-CS15iP docking stations I have and was ready to throw them out the window.
Finally after almost 2 years using them just as a charging station I found the solution that worked for me.
And the solution could not be any simpler........ use the reset button on the bottom of the docking station. It is a small hole between the battery latch and the screw next to it. Just a paperclip will do.

  • I upgraded my iPod Touch 4th Gen yesterday.  Now it won't play music, which is the main thing I use it for.  Over 11,000 songs [it's a 64GB model] -- will I actually have to restore the device and re-add all that music?

[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case.  I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.
I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.
I decided to do a complete reset/restore of my 4th gen iPod Touch, Bad move! I've been messing with it for hours, and it simply won't restore--it keeps hanging on a black screen with an Apple logo and a progress bar at about 10%, sometimes it goes completely blank and tries again, with the same result. (I've posted my question/plea for help here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19735862 )
I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.
I thought that once I started using iCloud, I didn't need to sync with iTunes anymore--guess I was wrong.
