IPhone4 Battery life

Since the last iOS update - the one released after the location cache issue arose - my battery life has been dropping like crazy. From a full overnight 100% charge, it is dropping at a rate of 10-12% per hour. And that's in standby. Unheard of pre-update because I regularly left my phone in standby at work and would leave in the evening with 80%+ battery life left. Now it's more like 20%+.
Anyone else experienced anything similar?

Hi Andy! That's unbelievable power loss of your phone!I haven't experienced something similar but I have tried some different things;Let's say it's fully charged at 24:00 when I usually try to get some sleep ,I delete cache, turn off WIFI and 3G and DON'T leave it in the charger,it's still fully charged at 07:30!really I have some problems and issues with the battery power but your problems are seriously worse!maybe you should contact your provider or where it's from cuz this isn't normal!Good luck I hope you will fix it!Kind Regards

  • IPhone4 Battery life: The report you all have been waiting for!!!

    Hello fellow iPhoners,
I'm a proud owner of an iPhone4 who have been getting sporadic battery performance for a little while. One day I can get 5 to 6 hours of usage while another the phone can barely make it past 4 hours doing the same things.
Therefore, I decided to start my own observation and document my findings regarding why my iPhone 4 can give me good battery on some days and terrible in others.
    Intro:
Now I'm sure all of you have read all the typical battery saving tips such as turn off fetch, dont game too much blah blah blah. Well, I wanted to know what is the real world impact do these things really do on battery and how much better is the battery life with them off.
The following are always ON for me: Wifi, notifications (no push or fetch), edge (I never use 3g - too slow anyway).
Screen brightness is set in the middle so IOS decides when to raise or lower it. Actually IOS seems to only be able to brighten the screen if you say, walk from a dark to well lit room. The reverse seems not possible. You must put your phone to sleep and wake it in order for the display to dims.
Keep in mind I typically get between 6 to 7 hours of medium usage. But I set out to find why do I get
less than 5 hours in some cases.
    Observations:
    1. After placing iphone in charge at night, went to sleep, woke up in morning to find that the iphone was at 65% and losing power while still PLUGGED IN. I had to unplug and replug.
    2. Sometimes iphone will get real hot while I'm not using it. Even after a reboot, it would continue to remain hot and drains battery.
    3. Observation 2 (above) has only happen 2 times unexpectedly.
    Answers to Observations:
    1. I no longer plug my iPhone on certain outlets to charge. I have come to realize that all outlets aren't equal and while some of them will charge up the iphone very fast, it tends to lose that power very fast also which would contribute to the days where I barely get 4 hours out of it. Thus I recommend plugging your phone into a wall outlet and not via an extended outlet. Also using USB to power it up via my PC doesn't provide the best battery life either.
    2. When my iPhone4 gets hot on standby, I know the processor is still running(very fast) which to me means an app is still running even though IOS4 is SUPPOSED to only SUSPEND apps in the background. However, we dont know and assume apps that have not been updated to OS4 simply get closed when we press the home button. Well, I have never updated my AP Mobile app (because the latest update *****) and I feel like it may be one of the culprits that render my phone a hand warmer. However, I also feel like Call Of Duty: Zombies might be another culprit as I always have used one of these apps when the phone keeps getting hot.
Now of course I won't blame these apps solely as I also feel IOS4 itself IS buggy and may be the bigger culprit. Sometimes X'ing out everything in the background tray solved the hotness problem, sometimes it doesn't and the phone will keep on dropping in battery until it dies.
Now I always wondered how did apple arrive at their claim of "up to 14 hours talk time on 2g" and "up to 10 hours of internet use on wifi" when I can barely get within that vicinity. While I have been able to figure out how I potentially could get 14 hours of talk time on edge, I still can't see how 10 hours of internet is possible on wifi because... wait for it... WIFI as I have just discovered is one of the biggest slow battery drainers.
It's true. According to my observations, with Wifi TURNED OFF my iPhone will drop 1% of battery every 7 to 8 minutes of light usage such as reading a book via iBooks or reading jokes on iPhunny. If you do the math, 7.5 x 100 = 750 /60 = 12.5 hours of light usage. Remember this is with wifi off and on edge only.
Now with WIFI ON and about 2 notifications for apps, doing the same exact thing, I get between 4 to 5 minutes per 1% of battery. One may say, that's not a huge difference, but it is sizable when we do the math, 4.5 x 100 = 450 /60 = 7.5 hours of light usage. This falls in line with my usual 5 to 6 hours since I tend to play a lot of games as well, which required more battery usage than say just reading a book.
This also hold true for when the phone is on standby which drops 1% every 40 to 60 minutes with wifi OFF. With wifi ON, it was about half the time.
When I turned off notifications completely with wifi still ON, I failed to notice any significant improvements to battery life as a whole.
    QUESTION:
Since I'm not an apple engineer, I was wondering if any body knows an answer to this: I'm aware that the iphone - when wifi is enabled- will keep on scanning all the time. However, I was under the impression that once it FINDS AND CONNECTS to a network, that it should STOP scanning. I mean, why should it keep on scanning if it's connected to a network already?
But, I feel like the reason why battery life is so different with wifi ON is because it keeps on scanning no matter what. So there's always this tiny process running all the time.
    Conclusion:
Despite over blown antenna issues, iPhone4 is a great device with great battery life to boot. The question is whether you are fine with say 6 to 7 hours of usage? If you would like to get more, remember to use a good outlet, turn off 3g if you dont need the data speed since phone calls tend to drop less on edge anyway, and turn off wifi when you dont really need it. Those remedies can add at least 2 extra hours of usage for you.
DISCLAIMER: Please all the above is only my opinion based on my own observation of my own iPhone4. I'm no professional techie or engineer. So no flaming or raging.
    Thanks!

I couldn't do either here is why.
    1. I have a back drop and the un-cropped image would look horrible and unprofessional
    2. I have 400 kids and to crop and export each size differently would would be a confusing nightmare for everyone not to mention the time involved as I have pretty 8 difference sizes in each package.
It should be able to be done like life touch offers these kinds of packages all the time

  • Iphone4s battery life

After updating the ios5, the battery life of my Iphone4s drops 20% after 1 hour of online radio listening. Is there anyone having the same problem?

Duh.  Why don't you try searching the forum before posting yet another repetitive post.

  • Problems with your iphone4 battery life? READ HERE!!!!

I will make this short and simple as I too have been experiencing battery problems with my iphone4 since I upgraded to 4.0.1
Now here is what I THINK is going on, I believe there is a BUG in the wifi software in IOS that tends to drain the battery at a rate of 5% every 10 to 15 minutes or so if you are using the phone for surfing. And if you are not doing any internet surfing at all, it still drops the battery at a similar rate.
Sadly what I have found out is that this doesn't stop even when the phone is on standby. Two hours of my phone just sitting there, I lose about 5% plus. So if I leave wifi on and go to bed, my phone will lose close to 25% of battery over night. However once wifi is OFF, the phone will only lose about 2 to 3% over night. I'll say that's a HUGE difference.
What I also have noticed is that it doesn't matter if I have notifications & push ON or OFF, the battery still gets drained at the same rate as long as wifi is ON.
Once I have realized the culprit, I went from getting a mere 4 to 5 hours of usage to 8 to 9 hours.
So, I suggest that you all only turn wifi on when you NEED it. Once you no longer need it, just shut it off. This is what we have to do until apple fix this problem because it seems like having wifi ON is constantly working the wifi antenna even when the user is not using the wifi connection at all. Apple claims a whopping "up to 10 hours" of internet surfing over wifi. How can that be when my phone will lose over 30% of battery in 10 hours just on standby with wifi ON?
By the way, all my tests were done with my phone on EDGE only.
If you have done this and it worked for you, drop a line here

Note that the battery drain can be of many features you are using in idle or in use. Whether you notice it or not, it'll drain every 10 to 15 minutes on idle based on the several features enabled:
    * Push Notifications with 10, 15, 20 apps that run it
    * WiFi, cellular, 3G
    * Bluetooth active or idle
    * Mail set to Push or Fetch by Minutes
    * Applications left to run in the background
Nearly every iOS4 app will add the Fast App Switch, File Transfer Services, and Background Location. If you are not using any of these apps, it's recommended to close them down. Whether it's iOS3 or iOS4 apps, they will slowly drain the power through the RAM processor.
If you run a system info application, it'll state how much RAM you are currently occupying with all your multitask apps running. The more RAM used, the more battery power is drained. You can increase battery life by doing the following:
    * Settings-Push Notifications-Turn off any application's push that doesn't work anyways or is bothersome to receive. Setting Notifications to OFF in general will repeat a consistent popup to enable it again.
    * Settings-Mail-Push-OFF, Fetch-Hourly, Advanced-Schedule to Fetch
    * Close all running applications not in use that sends notifications later. They are running in the background draining resources.
    * Follow Apple's guidelines on improving battery life such as setting brightness to mid range and automatic or turning off unused features.

  • Iphone4 battery replacement

Does anybody know how much it costs in Australia? My iphone4 battery life which is probably my fault as I know I haven't recharged it like I should, but now am having major problems with life and I love my apple and rely on my phone.

How long have you had the phone?  Usually a battery replacement will be covered under your original warranty and they will most often replace the whole unit.

  • Battery life for iPhone4 after ios5 update

I updated my iPhone 4 to ios5 this week and the change in battery life is shocking. I've used my phone for an hour and 13 minutes straight since taking it off charge and it's burnt through 32% of my battery.
This week I've been reading all the tips to improve my battery but nothing has helped so far. I'm fed up, my phone is only 10 months old and the ios5 update is obviously a poor quality release (I'm a software project manager).
What can I do?  Are Apple looking into this issue? Has the cause been identified or is there a massive software vs hardware conflict with this release.
While typing this I e lost another 3% in 7 minutes.
    Any hope appreciated.
    Thanks

I totallly agree. Am iPhone 4 user and have been since its launch. Have had all previous versions and every iOS so pretty familiar with what constitues normal battery life on these things. I have a daily routine that sees an almost identical amount of email use, some wifi, some 3g, some location services every day. Since updrading to iOS5 last week I haven't been able to get through the day without flattening the battery. Have resorted to turning off everything I can think of - location services, bluetooth, wifi etc. Under my old regime these were always on. The phone is still not getting through the day. Based on hours usage I would estimate that the battery life has dropped by about 30%. Thats being generous. Looking at whats going on I suspect this is a sloppy release of iOS5 and I'll bet there'll be a quick update. One thing I would be interested to know is if you are syncing to Exchange because I have a sneaking suspicion this is wasting loads of cycles as I seem to now be seeing loads of minor changes to my calendar notifications that didn't used to hapen under the old iOS. Trouble is, if I turn that off I might as well go back to a pager!
    All ideas gratefully received.

  • Is anyone else having a problem with the iPhone 4s Battery Life?  My 1 year old Iphone 4, which I gave to my wife, is holding a charge better and she has been using it far more than I've been using my 4s

My wife preordered a white iPhone 4s for our anniversary and even though it is preloaded with the ios 5, i am a little disappointed.  The battery doesn't seem to hold a charge well at all. I have had every other iphone except the 3gs and have never had such a poor battery life.  I owned the iPhone 4 for a year, and already know all the tricks to hold on to battery life, I have adopted the habit of closing out any apps that weren't being used, my mail push notifications are set for hourly, wifi and bluetooth are turned off when they aren't needed.  I also stay away from any car chargers, use only the apple brand supplied cables, and only charge when the phone is dead.  I only would sync when the phone was about to die as well.
When I saw how fast I was burning through the battery, I turned off Siri, which is kind of the purpose of the new iPhone, and turned off the backing up to iCloud.  I barely used my phone today and the battery kept ticking down.  My wife, who has been stuck with an iPhone 3g for years, has been fascinated with my old iPhone 4 and has been browsing and playing games and her battery has been holding a better charge than my new phone.  I even tried turning the phone off for an hour when it was at 18% and when I turned it back on, it was at 15%. My iPhone 2, which is only being used as a touch iPod now, still has better standby time than a brand new iPhone 4s.
To be honest, I am usually a heavy phone user.  Throughout the day I will make and receive at least 50 calls, I browse and check websites daily and watch videos sometimes during my downtime.  But this weekend, I haven't even had the chance to put this phone through the same abuse my other 3 iPhones have had to endure.
I just want to know if anyone else has this problem, or if I should just return this one.

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • Is this good or bad in terms of battery life?

So I have a question, my usage is 1 hour, 11 minutes; standby is 13 hours, 29 minutes. This is since the last full charge on my iphone4s and now the battery is at 68%. Is this good or bad, and the thing is when I used certain apps like words with friends even for 2-3mins I actually noticed the battery life going down 2%, and I know that because I have the option for showing the battery percentage switched to on. It's frustating that I'm doing the simplest task like going through settings and the battery is draining so quickly. Does anyone have and suggestions about increasing the battery life?

The short battery life is an issue of iOS5 that should be fixed with the next updates. ( also hope that Apple would fix it fast)

  • Why has my 5s battery life been dramatically reduced since the ios7 upgrade

I just upraded my Iphone4s to the ios7 and my battery life has dramatically reduced. Any suggestions?

When you update an iPhones OS a lot of features, new and old, are switched on even though they might have been off by choice previously.
Take the time to go thought settings and check that everything is the way you want it and that you only have the feature that you need/want turned on (inparticualy check the location settings Settings>Privacy>Location Service, make sure that this is only avaliable to apps you want, and that only whent the app is inuse as it can drain battery life considerably)
hope this helps if not reply and I'll be more than happy to help further

  • IPhone4s battery draining 1% every 2mins

Hi there,  ive got an iPhone4S fully working no issues, and while using it with all battery saving tips it drains 1% every 2mins. Is that normal for a 4S to do that?
How long does your 4S last on a percentage?  I really need to know ASAP cause its been bugging me for a while

  • Iphone4s Battery % drops suddenly.

I charge my iphone4s almost every night. When I wake up in the moring, the battery life shows 100% but after few minutes, it drops to 98 or 97% suddenly. Anyone has the same problem?

  • Battery life sudden drop off!

Hi all i have had my iphone4 for about 3 months with no problems at all! in fact it been great. But i charged it up last night as normal and went out for the day and notice that the battery was going flat very fast?
I was not useing the phone at all as i was busy and only check it for emails ect nothing unnormal.
I went out at 10.30 and it was flat by 4pm and i mean dead!I charged it again and its now been off charge for 2hrs and is at 60% already.
I had a 3gs before this (my wife has it now) and it is still as good as new and thats a year old or more.
Has the battery had it? if so why?
    PLEASE HELP LOL
    Regards
    Andy

I have a similar symptom to the original post, and have tried the reboot suggestions, but they didn't work. I have had the phone for a month or so, replacing a 2G, and initially battery life was about the same. The battery will not last even for a day. When I went to bed last night, the phone had 70% charge and it was completely dead by the morning today.
To diagnose a separate issue (data use increased 5x to 10x on both my phone and my wife's 3G iPhone after changing to the 200MB/mo plan), I started shutting down potential data users: no push, no fetch, no notifications, made sure apps were not running in the background, etc. It doesn't seem to make sense, but I would say that battery life got worse.
My question: is there any utility or available to check or log what's going on in the phone?
    Thanks!
