IPhone4 - Possible Sync/Backup Solution at last...

Since upgrading to iTunes 10.7 I've been unable to sync/backup my iPhone 4 via either USB or WiFi.
I've had  ALL the different messages over the months - "Can't start a session", can't sync, can't backup, etc.
I've followed all the advice from the forums - I've reinstalled iTunes, I've shut restarted the AppleMobileDeviceHelper services, I've restored my iPhone from backup, I've Reset Network Connections, I've deleted my backups on my PC and sync history in iTunes, but NOTHING works. (Sometimes it solves the problem for a short time, but then it returns).
iTunes 11 hasn't fixed the problem, but I THINK I've found a temporary solution - I can finally get my phone to sync again via USB if I turn WiFi *OFF* first.
(Ridiculous, but is it possible the sync/backup software sees the USB as a power source and tries syncing by USB & WiFi at the same time?)
Hope this helps someone else in the same position...
CR

Mine has been backing up for 3 hours now.  I stopped it after about an hour the first time, thinking something was wrong.  This is ridiculous.  I have never had a backup/upgrade take this long.  I also find it somewhat odd that no one has replied to this post with similar problems.  Are we the only 2, out of millions, that are having this problem?

  • Critique my backup solution please, suggestions?

My system generally looks like this:-
/home/data has the majority of my 'work', its a separate partition (by far the largest).
/home is also a separate partition. /home/ngoonee doesn't have much, just configs and stuff I was lazy to move (about 20 MB).
    Under /home I have:-
/home/LinuxProg - some programs which are outside pacman management (Matlab and small utils) as well as my wine/dosbox drives (20 GB...)
/home/scripts and /home/shortcuts - my own utility scripts and some .desktop files which I link to /usr/share/applications for those scripts (I use gnome and gnome-do).
Previously I would simply backup /home/data using rsync and tar up /home to a single 20+GB file. The reason for that backup configuration was basically that my external hard disc was NTFS.
Today I decided to reformat the external hard disc, will be splitting its space between NTFS and ext3. So I have the following plan:-
rsync for /home/data to the NTFS partition, since some data there would sometimes be used by Windows systems.
rsync for /home/LinuxProg to the ext3 partition, since the wine prefixes especially need the links maintained, which NTFS can't do.
rdiff-backup for /home/ngoonee - incremental backups of my configs sounds good
    rdiff-backup for /home/scripts and /home/symlinked - see above
rdiff-backup for /etc - I haven't backed this up before, but figure I may as well. Would have to run this one as root.
Any comments? Seems simple enough. Are there better tools for the job (rdiff-backup seems to be best recommended on our wiki)?

    ngoone,
I feel that the most useful backup strategy involves historic backups rotated over several periods of time. My linux experience at this point does not allow me to provide you with the tools to do such. But here's what I have learned way back in the early 90s when I was a junior maintaining an IBM ES9000 and a VAX/VMS in Alcatel, and adapted to what I believe could be your requirements (I've been using similar strategies on my own systems ever since):
    Daily Backups:
    1. Keep a daily sync backup of what you want to manage
    2. Rotate the daily backups over a period of 1 week (working days, or full weeks depending on your computer usage pattern)
    Weekly backups:
    1. Keep a weekly sync backup from the last daily backup that week
    2. Rotate the weekly backups over a period of 1 month
Usually the need to restore happens across small time spans (e.g. you need the backup from yesterday because you messed up with some files). However you are also guaranteed sync access to a full weekly backup in daily intervals and a full monthly backup in weekly intervals, in case things did get hectic.
You'll also note I don't take diff backups in a high regard But for completeness, you may want to maintain an history backup on top of that (a diff monthly backup that you do at the end of each month).
Of course you can adjust all this to your needs (personally I usually like to span daily backups over a larger period of time while still maintaining weekly backups). Maybe you will want to ignore the brunt of all this. But, as far as my humble opinion goes, no backup strategy is sound without you taking an historic approach to it. For even better security, include ewaller advise above into all this.
    Note:
This is a disk hog. But for all the better reasons. Personally, I'd rather have a dedicated disk or partition for my backup needs.

  • Possible to backup an iphone4 without upgrading to ios7?

Is it possible to backup and restore an iphone4 without installing the ios7 upgrade?

Your right, it may already have ios7 installed. It's a gamble. Verizon was getting the phone from their warehouse, so there is a good chance it may still have ios6. If it does in fact have ios6 (which I am hoping for) would transferring my data from my current iphone4 with ios7 to my new iphone4 with ios6 affect the ios? How would I transfer the data...icloud, itunes? As you can tell I basically use my phone for...well...phone calls!

  • IPad with IOS 7 is suddenly unstable and crashes many times in a day. Had been very stable until 2 days ago no new apps added. Problem is worse on iPad 3 than on iPad 2. Anyone else having this problem? Possible answers or solutions?

Two days ago my iPad 3 and IPad 2 started to crash very unexpectedly. Both iPads have wifi and cellular and both are running iOS 7.0.2. I will be working and suddenly the screen just wipes to black and then the big white Apple appears as if I have done a hard reset. The iPads always come back, but the crashes and unexpected app closures are happening with greater frequency. It happens more with the iPad 3 than with the iPad 2. Until two day ago both iPads had been very stable.  I don't keep a lot of apps open and I have plenty of GB of free space. I do hard resets after each event, doesn't help the situation. Did Apple do some kind of update to the OS in the last few days? I was just getting used to the new OS and this is very frustrating. Anyone else having this problem, have a possible answer or solution? Thanks for your help.

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

  • Rsync or other backup solution- single source multiple target?

    Seems from http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ly-774225/ that I can't do what I want, but I thought I'd ask as well.
My laptop hard disc is going to be backed up to two external hard discs (regular script). What I do right now is run two separate rsync commands, but of course this means that the data (all 300+ GB of it, currently) needs to be read twice. Seems it'd be much more efficient if the data were read once and then written to both external hard discs.
It doesn't seem from the above link and other google resources that this is possible. Can anyone suggest an alternative short of scripting a file-by-file cache?

Doesn't this partially undermine the point of doing two backups? I realise one is off site and that they are on separate devices which rules out some sources of corruption/loss but if you run the backup as you wish and something bad happens to the source during the backup, you are likely to end up with three corrupted copies rather than only two.
I don't manage to do this as I only have one complete backup but I thought that best practice involved not touching one backup while the other backup was being created (or restored or...). That way, you always have one "known good" backup whatever happens.
EDIT: not "whatever happens" but "whichever of any of a larger number of possible catastrophes occurs". Obviously, the third copy could be on a device that dies or explodes or gets drowned by a peeved goldfish at just that moment when mice eat your source during a backup, thus corrupting your other two copies. But you can only plan so far...
This isn't my complete backup solution. I have two hard discs in one location (what I'm asking about here) and another one at a different location. The reason I have two is simply because I have a spare which doesn't have any other use, and it may as well be put to use in this way.
Besides, if something happens to the source, using --backup-dir means I'll still have the last known good copy anyway (not taking into account the backup which is at the different location.

  • Backup Solution For This Specific Setup

I've been thinking about how I'm going to backup my setup but I'm sort of stuck.
    My setup: 2 Drives
80GB Intel SSD - boot disk, dual boots Windows 7 and ArchLinux
500GB HDD  - only for files, not going to be of any concern
Here's the fdisk -l for the SSD (/dev/sdb)
    Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes, 156301488 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x9b9dcc69
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 * 2048 206847 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sdb2 206848 103811071 51802112 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sdb3 104015872 156301311 26142720 83 Linux
    /dev/sdb4 103811072 104015871 102400 83 Linux
Here's what I'd like: If the SSD fails, I'd like to be able to have an exact clone bootable USB HDD ready to use (so it must be able to dual boot). Basically, I'd like to minimize down time as much as possible. Then I'd like to be able to transfer everything again to a new SSD.
I understand that I can use rsync for backups: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fu … with_rsync but I'm not sure how to adjust it for dual booting. Should I be cloning with dd instead? From what I've read dd will copy everything including the partition table of the old one so that might not be a good idea if I'm planning to move the whole thing to a new SSD?
    Appreciate any input!

Use rsync as it will then only write what has been changed instead of the whole damn thing like dd.  There is a wiki page about how to back up your entire system with rsync... you should probably have a look at that.
This of course will work just fine for your Arch Linux, but I don't know enough about windows to be able to recommend a way to do it with that partition.  I guess you could dd the partition everyday, but that doesn't seem very practical.  I would have to imagine that there is probably some kind of a incremental windows backup solution that you could use, but I don't know.
You will of course then have to have a bootloader installed on the second drive, set up and ready to boot into either system.  Then just make sure you are booting the right drive all the time and you're good to go.
Are you implying that you want to back up to the 500GB drive?  Or are you saying that you want to use an external?

  • IPhone & Now Up to Date - Possible Low Tech Solutions

iPhone calendar problem. My office uses Now Up to Date to organize my schedule. I used to be able to sync NUD with my old Treo, but with my new iPhone it looks like that might not be possible for a while. I thought of a possible low tech solution, but not sure if it will work and since I'm not very versed in applescript, I need a little help. Here's my crazy plan...
The idea is to write an applescript that will open NUD, save a copy of the month view as a .pdf (using that option in print window), save to a folder, open mail, create a new email to myself and then attach the calendar .pdf, send to my email on my iPhone. Then I would at least have a .pdf of my schedule to view on my phone when I'm away from the office. One last hurdle, it would be great if I could set the script to run on a timed schedule (every 2/3 hours)
Am I crazy? Is that possible? If not, anyone have any clever solutions until NUD works with iPhone?
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thanks for the response. I found a "solution" similar to what your proposing...
    • Save "archive" of NUD calendar to desktop
    • Delete all iCal calendars (I feel like I have to do this because with this method I am creating and importing a completely new iCal calendar everyday. That could get messy fast without getting rid of the old ones)
    • Then run apple script that converts the archive file to an iCal file and then imports
    • Sync to phone
    • Repeat everyday (ouch)
This version will actually utilize the iCal program on my iPhone (unlike my original idea). But as I mention above, it could become painful doing this manually everyday while I wait for the NUD fix.

I want to restore my iPhone to the backup that I did just before upgrading to iOS6.  When I try to pull up old backups, I only see one from this morning and an old one from May 2012 when I still had my iPhone 3GS.  I have not been using iCloud since it was set up improperly when I first switched to the 4S, the contacts weren't being synced AT ALL.  visited the genius bar, they said I need a whole other appointment to visit them and solve that, I haven't had a chance to do that yet.  Thus, I am backing up to iTunes.
This morning's sync/backup resulted in me losing most of my contacts, and for the contacts that remain, 99% of the phone numbers are gone.  I can recover my calendar entries from this past week, but I don't know how I can recover all of them from my May 2012 backup.
Since I had a backup just last week, I'd like to just go back to it.  But how?  Or, is there another way to get my contacts restored?  And why did they disappear?  And what else may be gone that I just don't know about yet?

  • Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 b4 sync with iTunes?

Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 to iCloud b4 sync with iTunes? Last time I synced iphone4 with iTunes, I updated to 5.0.1 when I connected, but it wiped my calendar entries. I had to reset to the last date I had synced (4months ago). So my question is... Now that I have iCloud, should I back up both my iPhone and my iPad before I sync with iTunes?  And will all the data from iPad, iPhone, and computer all merge when the iPad and iPhone are synced?

    It does not matter.

  • Backup solutions w/RAID or redundancy (NAS, RAID, DIY File server)

Hi all, I need a place to bounce my ideas off of. Here goes:
I have been doing a lot of reading, since I was considering adding an NAS solution for my home network. My data consists mainly of videos (TVs and movies) and pictures (many many years worth).
Anyways, out of the box solutions seemed a bit too pricy and the RAID not that spectacular unless you're willing to spend, so I began looking at building my own fileserver, with a hardware/software RAID solution. That was a bit better bang for the buck, but I still had one nagging concern.
I've played around with RAID before, and I realized that with mirroring (the only RAID option I was really considering), was that it relied on the RAID controller. I couldn't just take a hard drive, remove it physically from the array, and have my information accessible when plugging it into another computer.
What happens in a few years if your RAID controller dies and you can't find the exact same one? Your array will always be dependent on that controller and I really don't like that feeling. I'd rather have the option of taking a drive, plugging it in another computer, rather than needing to move the whole array (RAID, NAS, DIY file server) around. That means quicker access to my information or the ability to take it with me anywhere I go, on a moment's notice.
The least costly solution I have come up with, for data that doesn't change all that much, is to have two huge drives (1 TB) on a computer, either one or both connected via eSATA. Just remember to ghost/copy the main drive once in a while, and keep the 'backup' drive detached (preferably located in a fire-proof safe) and back it up once in a while, on a regular basis).
Sorry for the long post, but how does that sound, for a cheap, reliable backup solution, for data that doesn't get updated too frequently and for ease of access and use?

    Hi BGBG;
For what you are attempting to do, RAID is not the best solution. The reason I say this is because RAID 1 is only capable of protection from disk failure. It is not a valid backup solution.
I think that your last solution of using eSATA and a copy is the best. My only addition to your proposal would be a third disk. That way when you move the backup disk into storage you could replace it with the third one. In this way you could use SuperDuper to periodically backup between two disks.

  • Manual Backup vs Sync Backup

    Hi,
Just a little question, I've had to do a manual backup recently and it took quite a very long time to complete. I've noticed that the backup that occurs before syncing the iPhone (4S ios 8.1 in my case) with Itunes (last version) doesn't take that long, and I would like to know why.
    - Does it just update the last 'sync' backup with new files ?
    - Is it as reliable as a manual backup ?
    - does it takes the same size in my computer ?
    Thanks,
    Matt.
    iPhone 4S, iOS 8.1.2

Look under Edit > Preferences > Devices. There is normally only one backup for each device. If/when you restore a backup to a device the current version of it is used for the restore, the backup set is archived with the date of the restore, and a new rolling backup for that device is created. Whether you refresh the backup manually or via the first sync of the day, the overall size of the backup won't vary much unless you have added lots of new data to the device that would be included. Note that if your device normally backs up to iCloud then it is only backed up to your computer if you instigate a backup manually.
