Iphone5 MMS: older phones not receiving messages

Iphone5, iOS6.1.4, Verizon. Brand-new phone I bought a couple weeks ago. So its brand-new, mint condition, untouched.
I've been sending group messages, not realizing more than half of my friends/family were not receiving them.
1.My aunt lives on the other side of the country and has some kind of smartphone(not iphone) and she's been receiving them just fine.
2.My mother has a normal cellphone that is several years old AT&T, but she has only being receiving the subject line of the message. When she tries to "retrieve" the message, it always says "failed to retrieve". She has no problem getting text messages from everyone except me.
3.My brother has a different model of a normal phone and he is on the same AT&T plan with my mother and he is able to receive my group messages.
4.Some other friends with older phones and AT&T are not receiving the messages at all.
So it's been very hit 'n miss on who can receive these group messages.
I turned off iMessages first, then I finally turned off MMS Messages, and my mother was finally able to receive a group message from me.
She has always been able to receive an individual message from me with MMS and iMessages turned on. This is strictly a group message problem of some kind.
I was only sending her messages with text content, but the group messages always say MMS at the top regardless of what you send. I'm assuming turning off MMS forces group messages to use SMS.
Why is iphone not able to degrade gracefully with a group message? Why can't it detect older phones in a group message and say "hmm...maybe I should use SMS, especially since the iphone is sending a message with text-only content anyway."
It's really irritating that I have to either, remember to send INDIVIDUAL messages to every single person, OR keep MMS turned off just so older phones can receive a group message.
Has anyone else had these kinds of problems, and if so, what did you do?
Why does group messaging suck so bad on iphone? I group-messaged all the time on my normal cellphone and had no problems.
Even if iphone turned off MMS for a specific message-group automatically because ONE phone involved in the group was too old, that would be better than having to manually turn off MMS for the entire phone. Degrade gracefully, Iphone. It's a fact that older phones will be around for a long time still. My mother's generation still has 30-40 years left in them and they hate change.

Whether its the carrier or the phone model, why can't something detect that an MMS is the incorrect format?
Why send it as an MMS if one of the phones isn't going to be able to receive it? Why not use SMS automatically on the iphone when the messages are text-only content anyway? Don't force a group message to be MMS unless it contains content like pictures that make MMS necessary.
It reminds me of the time when I didn't have txtmsging at all and some friends did and they would send messages that I never received and they had no idea I didn't receive them. At least with email, you get a mailer-daemon shot at you.
I don't expect SMS to fire back a NDR to tell you that the receipient doesn't have txtmsging, but it would be nice if MMS would downgrade to SMS when needed. Or remain at SMS until MMS is absolutely necessary.
Why are group messages always magically MMS? The individual messages must either be automatically SMS or they are detecting what the phone on the other end can handle.

Iphone5, iOS6.1.4, Verizon. Brand-new phone I bought a couple weeks ago. So its brand-new, mint condition, untouched.
My phone number was ported from AT&T to Verizon. No problems as far as I can tell.

Has anyone else had these kinds of problems, and if so, what did you do?
I feel like the problem is on my end(Verizon) rather than my friends' end since so many of them are not receiving MY messages. They are receiving everyone else's messages.
    Facts:
    1. INDIVIDUAL messages work. (MMS is turned on.)
    2. SMS-ONLY GROUP messages work. (MMS is turned off so SMS is forced.)
    3. MMS group messages, even with text-only content, are not being received by some people, others are receiving them just fine.

iMessages is not the problem. None of my friends have an iphone so I haven't been using iMessages at all.
The problem is SMS vs MMS on group messages. For some reason, the default for group messages is MMS, even though the contents I send are only text. My mother and some of my other friends cannot receive MMS messages, but they can receive SMS messages. (I don't know if its because their phones are too old or because of their specific txtmsg plan with their provider.)
So she automatically doesn't receive messages when I send them as a group instead of individually because they always send as MMS simply because they are GROUP and not because of the contents of the message.
Why do group messages always send as MMS instead of SMS?
I turned MMS OFF, in order to force group messages to always use SMS, but then the MMS setting turns itself back ON the instant I send an individual MMS to a friend who can receive those types of messages. Once MMS setting is back on, I don't realize it and send out a GROUP message, which doesn't reach everyone because once again MMS is being used instead of SMS.
If group messages would send as SMS when I am only sending text, then there would be NO problem. It shouldn't use MMS unless I'm sending a picture or something.

  • IPhone5 will send but not receive Text messages

IPhone5 will send but not receive Text messages.  Specifically, I can send my grown son text messages, but he can not reply to them, nor can he send me new texts. He and I are both on Verizon, and he has a Droid phone.  His texts can be recieved by his mother, who can forward them successfully to me.  When I initally received the phone (Dec 2012) I could receive and send texts with my son with no difficulty. The trouble began (as near as I can tell) when my phone was upgraded to 6.1.1.  This is a significant problem and I would like it resolved as soon as possible.

Scouter, let's get you reconnected with your son, via text message. Make sure that your text messaging feature is enabled in Settings>Messaging:
    enable iMessage ON
enable "Send as SMS" to ON
    MMS Messaging ON
You will also need to reset the network connections in:
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network
Finally, power cycle your phone off/on and try to send your son a text message. Keep us posted. We're here to help you.

  • My two months old IPhone5(AT n T) not receiving calls (quite a few times) even though signals are good,Because sometimes people are calling my landline and asking Is your phone switched off ? In fact network also good at that time.Any fix ?

My two months old IPhone5(AT n T) not receiving calls ( quite a few times - Till now it happened around 15-16 times) even though signals are good,Because sometimes people are calling my landline and asking me that  Is your phone switched off ? Infact network also good at that time. Not sure about the problem.
I contacted AT n T also and explained about the problem, They suggested to monitor few more days...whether it is real network issue or not. But I am very sure it is NOT network issue because one day I was waiting for my brother at my office open parking space, And i called my brother whether he is ready at his place so that i can go and pick him, but he told it takes sometime...and he told, he will call in 15 mins, So i was at the same location (NOT even moved 1 inch also ), just sitting and listening music and after 30 mins, I called him back and asked Still not ready, then he replied he was trying me from last 15 mins and it is going to voice mail , I got similar complaint from others as well. Today also my cousin called my landline and asked Is your phone switched off ? because i was trying to reach you but it is going to voice message, I saw the signals at that time, Signal strength is very good. I think there is some problem in Iphone5 may be LTE or something.
Taking phone to next levels is good, But it should NOT hamper it's basic phone functionality ( Make calls, receiving calls, Voice mail etc ). Please let me know if any fix for this.

You say it started on yours after upgrading to iOS 8.  I've been on iOS 8.0 for quite some time and only recently did this issue spring up.
The one thing I haven't tried is downgrading it back to iOS 7 (which would be a shame, but if it's the only answer...)
I'll get back to you once I've tried that.

I'm sending an iMessage from my iPhone to another iPhone but the recipient phone does not receive message because not on wifi. Why does recipient iPhone not automatically receive in text messaging?

Wi-Fi is not required for iMessage. Internet access is required for iMessage which includes when the iPhone is connected to the cellular network.
If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will fail to send and you will be prompted to send as an SMS if text only.

My ipad does not receive messages, the bubble in the green background. My iphone does.
I can use my ipad to send messages, but it only moniltors the ones i send with the ipad. All the other messages I get on my iphone are missing.
    Any idea why?

"The bubble in the green background" indicates the message was an SMS (cellular text) message.  If the background were blue, it would mean the message was an iMessage.
The difference is important.  Your iPad is not a cellular telephone.  It cannot send or receive cellular text or MMS messages.  It is, however, an Apple device which means it can communicate using Apple's iMessage to/from other Apple devices (typically over WiFi).

Talk to your carrier.  Sounds like something is not provisioned right on your account.

  • Mail not receiving messages suddenly

I have two email accounts on my original iPhone. I noticed tonight when I checked my email on my desktop that there were messages in both inboxes, but they were never received on my iPhone. When I push the circular arrow in the bottom left of the screen to get my mail it just keeps saying, "checking for mail". Usually when I go to my mail, I would notice that the mail was checked within the past hour or so (as I have set). But the past couple days it has not been checking unless I push the button to do so...but still not receiving messages. I tried to check the settings but couldn't get it to work. My passwords, etc. are fine. I just can't get messages. Is there something up with mail and the new 2.0 on the original iPhone? Thanks, Brian

Hi all - I just did some experimenting, after also not receiving any mail on my original iPhone since the version 2.0 update. I manually deleted all email accounts on my iPhone. After this was done, I did a reset on the phone (held both buttons down until it did a restart). Then I re-synched the phone and in iTunes, in the iPhone synch menus, selected "replace information on this iPhone" with Mail Accounts checked.
Once all the email accounts were cleared and totally reinstalled, it is working flawlessly again. Hope this works for you too!!

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • Switched to Samsung GS5 2 months ago, still not receiving messages from iphone users

I switched to a non iphone over two months ago and ever since then I cannot receive messages from iphone users sending in imessage format. They have to turn imessage on and off to be able to text me. This has been extremely inconvenient since I need to receive these messages for work in addition to my personal life. I have tried multiple suggestions I've read about, still nothing works. It's like this is apple's way of keeping customers using their iphone instead of switching for fear of not receiving messages. They won't really fix it either when we all know technology is advanced enough to fix this. HELP.

  • Asynchronous subscriber is not receiving messages

              Hi,
I have a problem with stand alone asynchronous subscriber. The asynchronous subscriber
is not receiving messages even though there are messages published to the same

When i run asynchronous subscriber it should wait indefinitely to receive messages

I think WL JMS has had this behavior since version 4.51? At
least since 6.0. You are the first I recall ever desiring
this behavior. You are welcome to file an enhancement request
              with WL support.

I think we need to agree to disagree here. You are depending
on a side-effect that the main() can't exit until all async
consumers are closed. This behavior is not defined in the JMS spec.
BTW, there is JMS compliant and then there is JMS compliant. I can
easily list a good many significant failings of "JMS compliant"
vendors. I don't intend to spread FUD, but want to make
the point that "JMS compliant" does not come even close
to meaning "tested" or even full compliance with JMS spec - it
just means that the vendor (may have) passed the (relatively basic)
              Sun compliance tests.

I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off and without wifi? I can send the message but often do not receive messages from others, iPhone or other, until  I turn on cellular or wifi.

Depends on the type of Message.
SMS messages will send and receive with data off.  and while you can guarantee you send using SMS you cannot guarantee that whoever replies to you does also. They may be replying thorugh iMessage if they are using iPhones.
However Android should be sending through SMS.
You can turn off iMessage if you want to, though people with limtied SMS text messaging in their plans may not appreciate it, and stop messaging you.

since updating to IOS7 my 4s has been giving trouble, not getting calls, Imessages wont go, not receiving messages. What can i do??

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.
