IPhones not appearing on MacBook Pro

I have been trying to transfer photos/videos from my iPhone 4s to my MacBook Pro.  When I connect via USB, the phone starts to charge and it shows up in iTunes, can sync, etc.  However, it does not appear under "devices" in Finder, iPhoto or Image Capture.  So, I can't transfer them.
Then, I tried my husband's iPhone.  That also charges, but does not show up in Finder, iPhoto, Image capture OR iTunes.  Same with my iPod touch.  All 3 of these devices have been connected and synced with this computer previously.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I am really low on space on my iPhone so would love to be able to transfer the pics and delete them from the phone.
Thanks,
Amy

Correct it doesn't show up in the Finder. To transfer photos open iPhoto. From the menu:
iPhoto>Preferences>General. Select what application you want to open to transfer photos. "Connecting camera opens..."

  • IPhone 4S Personal HotSpot not appearing in MacBook Pro or iPad2

I've been struggling for a long time detecting my iPhone 4S Personal Hotspot on my MacBook Pro and my iPad2.  Apple support has not been able to resolve the issue.  Sometimes the iPhone would show up; most of the time, not.
Recently, after learning that Siri cannot read Messages to me when I have a passcode in effect, it occurred to me that maybe the Personal Hotspot doesn't show when the phone is locked and/or passcode protected.  I've been doing some testing and I think I've demonstrated to myself that this is true.
Each time I want to connect my MacBook or my iPad to the hotspot, I find I have to slide the lock to open the phone before either piece of equipment will detect it and connect.  I also notice that it takes a long time before the hotspot appears.
With previous smartphones, the hotspot appeared quickly and was always easy to detect as long as it was enabled.
Has anyone else had the same experiences?

I've since resolved this problem - at least so I can cope with it without too much hassle.
You said your phone is unlocked.  Do you have a passcode enabled?
In my experience and testing (Apple support has been useless on this problem), I've narrowed it down to making sure the phone is unlocked and passcode disabled.  Either feature alone will block the WiFi hotspot.  [By the way, I've also learned that Siri is blocked from reading text messages, etc. when the passcode is in effect - even if you are using a Bluetooth device that is already paired with the phone.  Obviously, you must be the owner of the phone if you've pair your device to it.]
I went to my local Apple store on a Genius support visit.  I demonstrated how enabling either feature blocks my iPad's ability to detect the hotspot, and disabling both allows my iPad to see the hotspot.  The guy just said he had never seen that before, and that they are always learning new things.  He didn't do anything to elevate the case to higher level support, like Apple engineering.  I just left the store and that was it.
I've explained this to Apple support more than once and they never seem to be aware of it.  I'm supposed to call to speak with a management level guy, but I haven't remembered to make the call.
So, I walk around with an unsecured phone all the time so I can conveniently access my WiFi hotspot.  And I have to make sure the phone it unlocked until the connection is established so my computer or iPad will find it.  Otherwise, all I can see is everyone else's equipment.
Maybe people don't use the hotspot much.  Apple doesn't seem to care.

  • Windows-formatted Iphone not recognized by Macbook Pro Itunes

I recently ditched a PC laptop from which I had started using an Iphone and just switched to a Macbook Pro. When I connect my Iphone to the Mac, the Iphone icon pops up on the left hand side, and I'm able to see all the music on the Iphone, but it all appears gray (ie: inaccessible). When I try to drag music to copy from the Mac Itunes to the Iphone, it won't allow me to do so (dragging music onto the IPhone icon does nothing). Similarly, I can't play any music on my Iphone via the Mac Itunes. I am able to sync though, which seems strange. All software is up to date (for Mac OSX, Itunes, and IPhones), and I've tried re-booting several times without success.
I've tried authorizing the computer which does nothing, and unfortunately the Apple support rep wasn't very helpful. I've also tried Googling this issue but can't find any posts addressing to this issue.
I would assume that this has something to do with my Iphone originally being formatted by Windows, and now my new Macbook Pro is having compatibility issues with this? Is there some other software or formatting I need to do so I can copy new music to my IPhone, etc, without clearing out all the music already on the IPhone?
    Thanks!

  • Find my iphone not working on macbook pro

Find My iPhone is working accurately on all my other devices and laptops. However on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012, running current Yosemite 10.10.1) it is not. As you can see from the image below on the MacBook Pro doing an iPhone search produces a confused image of 4x small maps of the same area and places the iPhone nowhere near any of them. Find my iPhone does this on my Macbook Pro (only), no matter which one of my 3 iPhones I try to find. Anyone with any clues on how to fix this? Thanks.

Well, YAY! Browsers can be like that. For the longest time, the only way I could look at my digital paycheck was by going to the site using Safari. Now Firefox will display it, but don't know if that was because of a change in Firefox, or a change on the ADP website....sometimes they just don't play well together.
Glad you are all sorted now!

  • External Hard Drive not appearing on Macbook Pro or 2009 Macbook

    Hello,
I have a G Technology G-DRIVE External Hard Drive, that until now has worked perfectly.
I plugged it in today to try and back up my macbooks through Time Machine, like I have done for the last year - and on ether of the computers, the Hard Drive is not appearing in Time Machine or Finder. Having browsed online, I found that it is showing in Disk Utility and in System Information - but other than that I cannot do anthing with it. I even tried to Repair the drive, by erasing it and reformatting it - and I cant do it - I keep getting the messgae 'Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.'
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I use this hard drive as a Time Machine Backup, and I'm unable to do so.

At best, it sounds like this HD is flakey so even if you were able to get it working again, I would not trust it.

  • Thunderbolt ethernet en3 interface not appearing on MacBook Pro Retina

2012 retina MBP, with a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter.  Fully up to date, including this week's Thunderbolt firmware update.  Plug the Thunderbolt ethernet adapter into any port -- the kernel sort of sees it, but nothing ever provides a network interface.
Infuriatingly, I got it to work once after weeks of failure, but have never been to reproduce that fleeting success.
I've seen and tried the comments in three seemingly-relevant threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19550825
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21335473
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17909404
Like other reporters of similar problems, it's visible just fine in the system info:
    Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter:
      Vendor Name:    Apple Inc.
Device Name:    Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
      Vendor ID:    0x1
      Device ID:    0x8003
      Device Revision:    0x1
      UID:    0x000100020014E9B0
      Apple Serial Number:    DTN22060026DWKHAR
      Route String:    3
      Firmware Version:    5.5
      Port:
      Status:    Device connected
      Link Status:    0x2
      Port Micro Firmware Version:    0.0.8
It's getting power, at least, because the switch link light comes on when a cable's plugged in.
And the kernel recognises it in either Thunderbolt port, at least to some degree:
    IOThunderboltSwitch(0x0)::listenerCallback - Thunderbolt HPD packet for route = 0x0 port = 1 unplug = 0
    [ PCI configuration begin ]
    PCI configuration changed (bridge=58 device=5 cardbus=0)
    [ PCI configuration end, bridges 14 devices 16 ]
But no driver ever gets loaded, and the en3 device never appears.
I've tried installing AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext manually, which does nothing apparent.  Unloading and reloading produces:
AppleBCM5701Ethernet:     ffff     ffff getAdapterInfo - Vendor is unknown
    AppleBCM5701Ethernet:        0        0 start - getAdapterInfo failed, giving up
It's unclear if any of that is relevant or related to this adapter.
I've borrowed another physical adapter and tried that; it gives the same result.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/21335473 suggests creating a new Network Location.  When I do that, the Thunderbolt Ethernet device (which does exist in my "Automatic" location) doesn't even appear in the new location.  Clicking the [+] does not list it as an option to add.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17909404 suggests resetting the SMC, which I've done in theory -- although I can find no documented way to know that the SMC reset actually occurred.  Certainly there was no indication that I could see.  So I'm not convinced that it did anything at all.
I'm out of ideas.  This seems to me much more likely to be a software issue than hardware, at this point.  Almost like it just can't figure out which driver it needs to load.
I humbly throw myself upon your mercy and wisdom.

I had this problem, too, and an Apple Support call and Genius Bar visit later, I had the answer: if you're using Network Locations that preexist your Thunderbolt display, it doesn't seem to auto-add the possibility of "Display Ethernet" to your available network ports. To solve this, either:
Create a new Location in your Network system preferences. It will finally detect the "Display Ethernet" and use it. It'll slowly change from disconnected to No IP to green-is-for-go.
    or
Fix an existing Location by clicking the + to add a port and choosing Display Ethernet. It'll slowly change from disconnected to No IP to green-is-for-go.

  • Voice Memos not syncing from my iPhone 3GS to my MacBook Pro. Sync music is ticked in iTunes along with include Voice Memos box

Hi, I am trying to get my voice memos from my iPhone 3GS to my MacBook Pro via iTunes and it is not working. I have ticked sync music in the music tab of the iPhone device and the include voice memos box is also ticked. So, apparently this should work, but there is no sign of the voice memos in iTunes or in the iTunes folder in the finder window. Any ideas much appreciated! :-) Thank you.

I've always had the "Include Voice Memos" option selected. I think that only pertains to syncing voice memos from iTunes to the iPhone after it has been copied to iTunes. It has to be the new OS/iTunes not communicating that new memos have been recorded. For some reason they won't sync when I want them to, and then a few syncs later they magically appear.
By the way, I'm VERY comfortable with the iTunes and iPhone systems. I've been using iTunes for 5 years, and I've been recording class lectures with the iPhone voice memo app (and another app) for a couple years. It's not an error of not seeing that the memos were added; they don't exist in my library or music folders.
JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, POST WHICH FIRMWARE YOU ARE RUNNING EXACTLY!!!
I'm on an iPhone 4, running firmware 4.0.1

    Do you mean Bluetooth?
If you are trying to activate your iPhone you need to use iTunes.
There's no need to "pair" an iPhone with a Mac. Syncing, restoring, backing up, apps/ music / photos etc., is all done with iTunes.

    Hi ..
Shift key boots into Safe Mode, not Recovery.
This only works on a Mac running v10.7 Lion or later.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery
If you can't boot into Recovery Mode, help here >   Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
