IPhones will not connect 802.11n

I am new to the airport family so my appologies if my problem has been solved (I didn't find anything searching) or if its obvious and simple.
I currently have an airport extreme broadcasting a 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g wpa2 network. I also have a wired express creating the same network to extend it (thanks for the help with that, Bob).
First, i noticed that my MBPs were connecting to the N network but only 2.4ghz, so I set it to broadcast a separate 5GHz network name. after that, the MBPs were connecting to the 5ghz network without a problem.
So, when I check the clients on my network, I notice the iphones ( 4 and 4s) in the house are only connecting on 802.11b/g not a/n. This happens even if the iphones are only a few feet from the router.
Why are the iphones not connecting on the n network? Is this a setting issue or simply part of the technology I am misunderstanding?
Thanks.

sorry. I didn't mean to disable SSID broadcast; my experience with doing that is it has never mixed well with my macs. SSID broadcast is enabled.
I was referring to when you enabled the setting on the wireless tab in the "wireless network options" dialog box that will enable broadcasting a second SSID for a 5ghz only network (along with your regular SSID broadcast). For example, the two broadcast SSIDs would be;
     phil178821 (which is set to 5ghz n and 2.4ghz b/g/n)
     and
     phil178821 5Ghz (which is 5ghz N only)
What I was trying to described before is if I am sitting close to my router (15ft) and I am broadcasting just one SSID (my normal 802.11n - 802.11b/g/n), my MBP will connect to the 5ghz 802.11n. If I moved up three floors in the house, my MBP will change connection to 802.11b/g/n. With that, my understanding is that it is now connected via 802.11n 2.4ghz. Because it defaulted to the 2.4ghz frequency, I figured I was out of range of the 5ghz network. However, if I go into my AE settings and enable broadcast of a second SSID for a 5ghz N network (as described above), my MBP will pick it up at full strength and connect to it.
So I guess my question is. Why will the MBP opt for 2.4ghz when I broadcast  one SSID, if I know 5ghz is still in range since the MBP will connect to it if I enable it with a second SSID in the AE options (recall, the MBP will chose the 5Ghz frequency closer to the AE, e ven when only one SSID is broadcasted)?
hopefully I am explaining this well enough. Thanks for your help.

  • Advanced-N 6200 in T510 will not connect 802.11n

I have just received my T510 with the 6200 wireless adaptor.  This adaptor will not connect using wireless-n, only wireless-g.  I am running Windows 7, 64 bit.  Other devices that I have are connecting using wireless-n to the same router.
The driver is the latest (13.3.0.24) and 802.11n mode is shown as "Enabled".   There does not seem to be a choice for wireless-n in the "Wireless Mode" selection list.
Is it possible to get this to work with wireless-n?  If so, any help would be appreciated.

This is a well known problem with 802.1n kit, that unfortunately many of the WiFi kit vendors are genrally reluctant to warn users about.
The Intel 6300 WiFi card is fully 802.11n compliant, so it is not the issue.  Basically that means it should (and will) only connect in 802.11n in the 5GHz band WiFi band on its default settings.
It will also generally connect in a "Super-G" like mode (about 130Mbps raw link speed) in the 2.4Ghz band to a router than offers 802.11n connectivity solely on the 2.4GHz WiFi band, but this is not a fully specified mode of operation.
From draft 2 of the 802.11n spec onwards, the use of 40Mhz bonded chanels in the 2.4GHz WiFi band has been strongly discouraged, as it is generally anti-social in areas with a lot of 2.4GHz WiFi networks operating concurrently.
Your other devices may be operating on the now long out of date initial 802.11n spec, which permitted 40Mhz bonded channel operation in the 2.4Ghz WifI band.... before wide-spread practical field use indicated how disasterous it was for many existing 802.11b and 802.11g WiFi users.
Essentially, you need to get a dual band router that supports 802.11n operation in the 5GHz Wi Fi band (which by the way is actually around 5.8GHz).
    Cheers,
    Bill

Does the iOS devices connect to other networks?
Does the iOS devices see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Since both iPhone and iPod stopped connecting I suspect a problem with your network.

  • Iphone will not connect to airport extreme in N only mode?

My iphone was unable to see my airport extreme for local wi-fi. I chnahged my setting from "N compatible only" to "N with g,b compatible and it suddenly showed up. Is this a limitation of the iphone that it will not see 802.11N (only) routers? I could not find any documentation or internet tips on this topic. Thanks!

I have done that several times.
After entering the network ID, selecting WPA and password, the iPhone displays the msg: Unable to connect to network, but my network name (with the padlock) will show up in the list of available connections (after clicking "OK" on the dialog box) although my network is set to not broadcast.
FWIW: I can connect to other unprotected networks.

iPhone will not connect to my iTunes. I am running iTunes version 10.6.3 on my iMac runing Mac OS X version 10.5.8. All of my updates say "up to date" but this is obviously not the case. Can anyone help me out?

    Hi,
Your iTunes is up to date for your OS X.
iTunes 11 requires in intel mac running OS X 10.6.8 or later. If your computer is compatible you will need to purchase Snow Leopard upgrade from Apple store.

my iphone will not connect to wifi no matter what HELP

Have you tryed to restore the iPhone too ?
Restore the phone in iTunes using a backup, and if needed as a new iPhone, without using a backup.  However, the greyed out WiFi is often due to a hardware failure requiring replacement of the phone.

  • Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will - Help

Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will without problems.
iphone will connect to base station no problems, I've restored settings and started again but still the same, the iphone picked up the network for the last couple of months, but not now ?

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?

  • Iphone will not connect to Internet without WIFI connection

My iphone will not connect to the internet without a wifi connection.
I have restored the settings many times. But i still have this problem.
I get a message on safari which says 'could not activate celluar data network'
    what do i do?

If you have restored your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup and as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup with no change, have you contacted O2? Your line may need to be reset by O2, which will involve turning your iPhone off whole O2 does the reset at the server, or possibly there is a problem with your SIM card.

  • IPhone will not connect to Linksys WAG54G Wi-Fi

I can not get my iPhone to connect through my wireless router. I have even tried a reset on my router. My laptop works fine, but my iPhone will not connect. I can see the connection, but i get an 'Unable to join the network' message each time i try to connect.

Nothing on the phone can be changed to make it work unless a Software update was released to fix whatever was preventing a proper connection.
Can you connect to any WiFi networks at all? If so then it does isolate it to something with the router.
Based on what you said. You go to Settings - WiFi - You see your network, Tap on it. And Unable to Join?
So you never get a check-mark by the network name?
If you do actually get a check-mark next to your network, tap on the Blue circle. Would be interesting to see what the IP address started with.
Based on what you said when you disabled security, Did the iPhone no longer show a Padlock next to the WiFi network?
Also try changing the SSID sometimes that oddly works.

I recently changed my wifi password at home and now my iphone will not connect.  It will not ask me for a password just says will not connect to network.  Advice on how to get iphone to ask network password for wifi?

First, try tapping on the network in the Wi-Fi settings and then tap "forget this network". Then reselect the network in the main Wi-Fi settings screen and see if will then ask for a password. If not, try resetting the Network Settings in the General -> Reset section and then reconnecting to your W-iFi.
    Hope this helps.

  • Imac connects to time capsule through wifi but ipad and iphone will not connect

I just installed the new Airport Time Capsule.  My Imac connects fine through wifi bit my ipad and iphone will not connect to the wifi.  They appear in the wifi settings in the devices but will not connect.  I have reset modem and time capsule and tried forget network and nothing is working.  ANy assistance would be appreciated.  Thanks

So I called apple support being fairly certain that I wasn't going to be able to fix this over the phone but essentially, it now works flawlessly with my iOS devices. Here is what I did.
I have a Motorola cable modem surfboard 6421.
I reset my network settings to dhcp and NAT from the default bridge only mode which the tech said only allows one device to connect at a time. Considering my MBA was already connected to the AE, that would explain why my other iOS devices wouldn't connect. After I changed the settings for the network to DHCP and NAT, the router restarted. I then disconnected the power and coaxial cable from the cable modem and reconnected it and once everything came back up, all devices connected fine. Good throughout and signal. Hope this helps.

If you have connected to other wi-fi successfully, then your wi-fi should be working. Try power cycling the router. Disconnect it from power for about 30 seconds and then restart it. After it has come back, try connecting again.
