IPhoto 06' Blurry Thumbnails

my problem is exactly the same as people in this thread, over a year old:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5679210
ever since i upgraded tiger to leopard, all the thumbnails in iphoto 06' are so blurry! i've tried rebuilding the library thumbnails, etc. and none of it has worked.
does anyone have any ideas, a year later than this problem was first introduced?
thanks

My trash in iPhoto has no thumbnails in it, however, it says I have over 31K photos in it.  I have already "put back" over 35K photos to Events.  How can I delete from iPhoto photos that are not in a thumbnail?  Also, I have been deleting these for over a year assuming that they were being deleted when I put them in the trash.  I didn't realize that there was an iPhoto trash along with my computer trash.  I can't put the other Events into the trash until I erase what's in there. Thank you for any help  you can give me.

My Mac Air iphoto will display thumbnails but will not display photos in any way - single photo / slideshow etc - any ideas?

    Are you seeing this
when you double click on a thumbnail file?  If so it's an indication that the file path/link between the thrumbnail and original, full sized file has been broken.  Therefore, and assuming you're running iPhoto 9 or later, try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Fuzzy / blurry thumbnails in iPhoto

Since the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, the thumbnails in iPhoto are blurred, but not the images themselves. This occurs on old libraries, and also on new libraries / albums. The images also looked blurred in the Finder Preview.
Any idea why this happens, and how to fix it?

No solution, just a confirmation that you are not imagining this. I noticed this right after upgrading to leopard as well, using ilife 06 before and after.

  • DSLR JPG images crystal clear in iPhoto but blurry when opened in Photoshop CS5.

I own the CS5 master collection. I recently purchased a new Retina Macbook Pro. 15" 16gb RAM, 512gb flash, 2Gb Nvidia. For some reason, my crystal clear dslr photos are appearing blurry when opened in photoshop. In iPhoto they look sharp. Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm losing my mind over here!

If you imported your image files into iPhoto, Photoshop cannot see the original files and is showing you just the tiny embedded JPEG thumbnail.  Blame iPhoto.
iPhoto buries your images in its entrails as packages no other software can get at.  What you need to do is to EXPORT your images first into some folder Photoshop and other software can see.  You have to do this from within iPhoto itself after launching that d@mned Apple application.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The Automator script / new library is unlikely to work, the other poster is wrking from a brand new library.
But if you want to go ahead with it, this method is faster:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your modified files, albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Blurry thumbnails

I've recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. My iPhoto 6 thumbnails have become very blurry after the upgrade to OS X (10.5.1). I have run the rebuild thumbnails routine but my thumbnails are still blurry. Thank you in advance for any help on this question.

After installing the 3.1 upgrade I imported some new photos from my Canon 5D MKII and the thumbnails for those new images are very, very blurry when displaying in the browser window. Once you open the image it is fine but it is very annoying that the thumbnails are atrocious quality.
All thumbnails for images imported prior to upgrade are fine and sharp so they have not been affected by upgrade.
    Any ideas?
I think I had a similar experience with my 5d mk ii files and I immediately checked my preview settings. In my instance, the "use camera previews" became un-checked for some reason. I simply regenerated previews on the offending images and all was good.
Hopefully it will be as easy with your situation.

  • Iphoto shows correct thumbnail but does not show master photo or shows wrong master photo

iPhoto has been working fine for me for 2 years.  But yesterday I started noticing problems with the photos when scrolling thru all the photos in an event.
When viewing the event, I can see all of the correct thumbnails for the photos in the event.  But when I open the individual photos, some photos look fine, but others don't display at all (if I had added faces in the photo the frames for the faces show up on a black background).  If I swipe to scroll through the photos, the correct photo is displayed for less than a second and then is replaced by the last photo and gets either stretched or shrunk to be the same size as the photo that should be displayed.  If I view the actual file in the Finder, the master image looks perfectly fine.
I have tried repairing and rebuilding the database and neither one fixed the problem.
My software is up to date also.
I would like to export all of the photos from iPhoto to a different directory and just manage them myself, but I can't find an export feature in iPhoto.
Anyone having the same issues with iPhoto or know of a way to easily export the photos?  Or can I just move the masters to a directory outside of iPhoto?

You have tried repairing and rebuilding, but have you also tried to recreate the thumbnails from the same First Aid  panel?
Or rebuilding using iPhoto Library Manager?
I would like to export all of the photos from iPhoto to a different directory and just manage them myself, but I can't find an export feature in iPhoto.
To export your photos from iPhoto read Terence Devlin's user tips on this page:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents
The "Export" command is in iPhoto's "file" menu. You will want to export the original files and the edited versions.

  • Why Are Many iPhoto Files Now Thumbnails?

Greetings All: I've searched the forums for answers to my question, and there is a partially useful solution which dates back to 2006 about shrinking photos in iPhoto. All one needed to do to get around this problem was to go to ~Library/Pictures and make sure that iPhoto Data wasn't the selected folder for iPhoto. The solution was to select iPhoto Library as the source for iPhoto.
Now, things are a bit more complex. I cannot find a Pictures folder in ~Libary directory. It's now moved to ~Pictures. I have only one iPhoto libary file and it's called "Rebuilt Library". When I'm in Events mode and browsing iPhoto, I can get the app to show me the individual files, but I don't know where to find them. Often there are six copies of any given file with (EDIT) appended to one of the copies. As I click on each one, it's apparent that they are all tumbnails. Some of the photos are orignial size, but many aren't.
I wonder if I am doing something wrong, selecting an improper libary, or if I can kiss 800 or so of my Africa photos "goodbye"?
    Thanks in Advance.

    LN:
I use iPhoto '11 v9.3. I own a MBP i7 dual core running OS 10.4.7. How did I get to the individual photo files? By selecting an indivdual photo, going to the "Edit" menu on iPhoto, and dropping down to the "Reveal in Finder" command. I saw folders marked by date full of individual photo files. I clicked on several of them which seemed to be duplicates named in series; for example:
    IMO2345.JPG
    IMO2345.1.JPG...
    IMO2345.6.JPG
All seven photos were identical and all were of thumbnail size.
Also present were photo files marked with (EDIT) such as
    HOLIDAY2005.JPG
    HOLIDAY2005(EDIT).JPG
Again, both photos identical and both in thumbnail size.
I opened these photos with Lemke's GraphicConverter. You say this is an SQL database and cannot be interpreted by any other application but iPhoto. (I had to look up the definition of SQL.) From my non-tech point of view, I was struck by the fact that there was so much duplication, so many (EDIT) files, and all in thumbnail size which is how they appear in iPhoto. I didn't delete or rearrange any of the files. I won't monkey around with that database again.
There are two iPhoto libraries in my ~Pictures folder. One is iPhoto Library which is blank. The other is Rebuilt Library which contains all the data; it was created at the suggestion of the iPhoto application I was running in about 2006-2007. I don't recall exactly how I accomplished this.
There are still some photos which are at normal size. I recall going through the approximately 4,500 photos in my iPhoto collection (there have to be copies in here) and taking out thumbnail duplicate photos. I took a photo journey to Africa a few years ago, and some of those photos seem to be thumbnail now, which makes me panic; however most of the other photos I have in iPhoto are thumbnail size now. I don't know how to proceed from here. At the time I did it, looking at the individual photos in the folders seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'm a doctor, and I felt like doing some exploratory surgery. But I won't do that again.

  • IPhoto 6 losing thumbnails and ability to edit images

Upgraded to iPhoto 6 yesterday with no glitches. Library looked fine. Now, I have a bunch of photos in the library that show up as blank frames in the organizer view. These images still exist in the library, but the thumbnails are gone and they cannot be edited.
I've tried rebuilding the thumbnail databases, etc., (included running all 4 rebuild options accessible via the Cmd-Opt-Shift startup mode). Disk permissions are up to stuff too.
The original images, and the thumbnails, are all fine-- i.e. they can be viewed in spotlight or in other applications.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Alan

I found this solution from Mac OS X Hints. It worked for me as I had done the same as the author of this solution.
This problem has taken me almost a week to solve, so I thought your readers may benefit from my experiences. Nobody had posted about it on Apple's forums, so I got no help there. At the end of the the day, I may have broken a golden rule and tampered with the /System/Library folder (which seems to have caused the problem), but this workaround had not given a problem prior to iPhoto 5.04.
The problem was that on importing a folder of photos, the thumbnails were all black. I had also had my privileges corrupted on my user folder by a bad installer, and could not empty trash, or create new folders, etc. I fixed the privileges, but still had the same problem with iPhoto. All the usual fixes didn't work -- logout/login ; rebooting ; created a new user; trashed preferences file; rebuilt iPhoto library (this actually turned all the good thumbnails black as well!). I even moved the iPhoto library folder to allow iPhoto to create a new blank library, and that didn't work. Nor did trashing iPhoto and reinstalling an earlier version
The only course of action left was to re-install the full system. I backed stuff up, and did an erase and install. Over the next few days, I then brought everthing up-to-date, checking iPhoto operation at each stage. I wasn't sure if QuickTime7 may have been cause, so I only installed QT 6.5.2. Finally, all up-to-date and running OK again, and then ... it did it again! What caused it?
At some point in getting back up-to-date, I had re-applied my previous workaround to fix a bug whereby iPhoto changed the embedded colour profile from sRGB to Generic RGB when editing a photo. I did this by modifying some files in the /System -> Library -> ColorSync -> Profiles folder. I discovered that changing any colour profiles there results in the default permissions being changed on said files. However, resetting the permissions did not fix it directly. To fix it, I had to copy this folder off my daughters' Mac, then fix the permissions again. Finally, it was fixed!
The moral of the story? Don't touch any colour profiles in your system library!

  • Major Bug in iPhoto '11 -- Blurry Photos in Books

I spent the last week putting together a photo book as a Christmas gift for my wife. I was just about to hit the Purchase Book button when I noticed that several of the photos looked blurry. I attempted to double-click on them to examine them closely, but nothing happened. I left the book layout area and into the album where the individual photos were. When I attempted to edit the photo, I got the dreaded exclamation point -- iPhoto had lost track of the original photos.
I tried rebuilding the database by holding down the Command & Option keys during launch, but after a very lengthy rebuilding process, the photos were still blurry. Luckily, I realized that the problem photos were those that I had used the "Enhance" feature in iPhoto's edit area. By clicking the "Revert to Original" button at the bottom right (or right-clicking), iPhoto was able to rediscover a high-resoultion version of the photo (pre-Enhancement).
It was a pain to go through over 100 photos and manually click the "Revert to Original" button, but at least I got my sharp, high-resolution photos back. Spending a week and $50 on a book of blurry photos would have been bitter disappointment, not to mention a lousy Christmas gift.

    Hi Larry,
    Thanks for your reply,
I did a rebuild of the library, but the error remained.
To answer the issues you have with my post:
1/ My post is not about books, but the original posting dug deeper and got to the issue of editing photos in iPhoto and having the same problems as I experienced and described. Exporting a photo in a book or in an email, what ever export/production mode is, it came down to a problem of photo Edit in iPhoto.
2/ Also, I found this post via googling "iphoto bug when editing photos". It is not the first time a thread is picked up a couple of months later, or is it ?
3/ Also, on "the "sharing" by email works but is failing as well"
Indeed the sharing by email works, that is the photo gets exported to the email, ie mail is activated and the photo is composed in email but in the email, as I mentioned, "the photo has a serious quality loss and is blurred, though in the Edit Tab/mode it is still full quality and sharp."
Thanks again for your reply and help.
    Best

  • Can I export an iPhoto album as thumbnails?

Let's say I have an iPhoto album of 200 jpeg pictures.  When I highlight the album in the left sidebar of the iPhoto page, all the pictures display as thumbnails. I want to remove the pictures from iPhoto and put them on a DVD or CD-R.  This is no problem, but the pictures are then displayed as generic jpeg icons with the cryptic digital camera picture designations such as IMG_0285.JPG.  This makes it extremely laborious finding a particular picture.  Is there any way that the pictures can be exported/saved/downloaded to a removable medium so that the thumbnails will be displayed instead of the jpeg icons?  Thanks.

I know what reboot means.  I just don't know what "see if you can the preference change to jump start"  means.
I tried to follow your instructions, but I must have done something wrong.  I got this icon with the Show Icon Preview turned on:
And I got this with the Show Icon Preview turned off:
I had the options of saving the TextEdit document as a "Rich Text Format", "HTML", Word Format" or "Word XML Format".  I took the default one, the first one.  I saw no option to save as a ".txt" as you did.

  • Organizing iPhoto library and Thumbnails

I am in the process of removing old photos in my iPhoto library. I've cleaned up the Modified and Original folders and I understand the Data folder contains the thumbnails. Is there a quick and painless way to delete the thumbnails from the Data folder of the original photos I deleted without going through every single thumbnail?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Huh?
Te correct way to remove photos from iPhoto is to do it in the iPhoto Window. Drag the pics to the iPhoto trash and empty the iPhoto trash.
That's the quick and painless way to remove pics.
Have you being doing this in the Finder? IF so, then you'll need to create a new library and start from scratch.
To create and populate a new library:

  • Opening iPhoto Event in Thumbnail view - not full screen

When I view all my 'Events' in iPhoto I see them as thumbnails. It used to be that when I then double-clicked on a particular Event I then saw the contents as thumbnails as well. Now when I open a particular Event it goes straight to a randomly selected photo on full-screen. I have to then scroll through up to 200 pictures to get to the one I want.
I have obviously done something stupid - can anyone offer any help so I can get back to how it was before??
    Thanks very much in advance.

  • IPhoto 11, Black Thumbnail for all Faces

In iPhoto, when I go to Faces there is a black thumbnail for all faces. If I double click to go to the actual fotos of one of the faces (names), the thumbnails are also black, if I double click the actual individual foto then you can see the actual foto. I have reinstalled iPhoto but it still shows onlt Black thumbnails for all faces (names).
    Please help.

haarrrrummmm... don't know why I'm not able to edit my own posts, but there you go...
Rebuilding is only rebuilding if  you get a dialog box showing 4 options. If you don't see this, then you may not have options and cmd keys depressed correctly (long enough etc) at startup of iPhoto.
You should see a dialog box presenting four choices:
    repair permissions,
    repair thumbnails
    repair database
    rebuild database
(Doing this from my head so the order may be a bit different)
Anyhow, start with repairing permissions, then thumbnails.
Repairing thumbnails will take time, especially on bigger libraries. Allow the machine to finish the task.
Repairing and rebuilding database are the big guns here. Make backups before letting these loose.
