IPhoto 06 corruption

I have just upgraded from iPhoto '05 to iPhoto '06. Prior to this I duplicated the working iPhoto '05 "iPhoto Library" so I have a viable backup / back out plan.
Launching iPhoto '06 for the first time asks about updating the iPhoto Library. I accept this but iPhoto immediately tells me that the iPhoto Library is "damaged and can not be upgraded" with quit being the only option.
Do I have an option to recover this allegedly damaged library or is my only option to manually add the photos again?
Dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.75Gb of RAM Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Sorry but this will take a while:
Followed the following sequence:
1. Duplicated original Ver 5 iPhoto Library
2. Ran "IPLM" on duplicate and imported to a new (3rd) library.
3. Recorded the errors.
4. Deleted damaged files for duplicate.
5. Made a duplicate of the "cleaned up" library (as a back out).
6. Set iPhoto '05 to read the cleaned up library instead of the original.
7. Launched iPhoto '05 - unexpectedly quit.
8. Went back to duplicate of cleaned up library (from step 5).
9. Repeated step 2.
10. No errors reported.
11. Restored iPhoto '05 (Ver 5.0.4).
12. iPhoto crashed when attempting to open cleaned library.
13. Applied Terminal fix suggested in earlier post (dragged folder icon onto terminal window to ensure path was correct.
14. Confirmed accress rights as suggested in earlier post
15. Attempted to launch iPhoto '05

Frustration - Iphoto corrupting image files during import (?)

To begin with, I'm a recent convert from Windows to the Mac. I'm running a mac mini at home, and a Macbook with Boot Camp at work (in addition to my desktop pc). All of my software is up to date...
I take alot of pictures with my digital camera (canon powershot). Saturday I took about 300 pictures, took the SD card out of the camera, put it into my Sandisk card reader, imported the pictures into iphoto and everything worked great. I chose to not delete the pictures after the import as I wanted to bring the card into work and upload the pictures on my pc.
The next day (Sunday) I took another 70 or so pictures. I was able to view all of the pictures on my camera that I had taken over the past two days.
I go to do an import , taking the exact same procedures that I took on Saturday (and that I always do). The first thing it does is identifies that there are duplicate pictures. I choose the option of "don't import duplicates" and apply this to all of the other duplicate pictures.
At the end of the import, I got an error message saying that some of the files were corrupt. Now, there were pictures from Saturday that were still on there (and readable/viewable). However, every picture that I took on Sunday was "unreadable" and did not show up in iphoto. I put the card back into the camera, and now I can't view the pictures (they show as "corrupted data".
I then pulled the SD card details up in Finder, and the "corrupt" files still show sizes of 2.4mb to 2.8mb, consistant with the good pictures. It shows the file's "Kind" as JPG Image... I double clicked on them and Preview comes up saying something to the extent that the file is corrupt,
I've taken the Sandisk card reader, plugged it into my Macbook (using iphoto in osx) and was able to view one or two of the pictures from Sunday.
Once I got to work this morning, I plugged the sd card into my Windows machine and it too says the files are corrupt. It shows them being on the card, it shows the file sizes, but I can't open the pictures in anything...
If this was a one time deal, I'd be thinking it may be something I've done to cause the problem. However, this is the third instance I've "lost" all of my photos because of them becoming corrupt during an import into iphoto. There definately appears to be a pattern.
I have somewhere around 8,000 pictures inside iphoto that I've taken and had no problems with. I mention this to illustrate that I'm not doing anything differently than I've done before. I have another 14,000 on my old Dell that I need to move over, but I'm questioning if I should do that now.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Is anyone else experiencing (present or past tense) this problem? Where I'm new to the mac, I understand that I might be doing something wrong. However, I've imported photos to the software (what seems like) hundreds of times, the same way each time. This makes me want to rule out user error...
One other question, I'm saving the "corrupt files" with the hope that there's a software program which will "fix" the files. Do you happen to know of such a piece of software? I'm hoping that I can get them fixed at some point.
Where I'm taking pictures of my kids, its extremely frustrating to find out that the pictures (memories) I was hoping to make prints of are now "gone". Its almost like rolling the dice when doing a photo import any more. Most all of the time it takes, but every now and then the pics are lost...
I'm hoping to identify the problem (either user error, procedure or software issue) and fix it as I really like the mac.
Any help/suggestions you might have for me would greatly be appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First: the corrupt files: download Graphic Coverter, a shareware which is often successful where other software isn't. But first, if the Mac will let you, copy the files off the card to the Mac.
I'm in this board a while now, and I can't recall an issue of iPhoto corrupting images on import. After all, it's just a simple file copy, at heart. I would be more inclined to suspect the card. DO you have more than one? Does the problem also occur with the other cards?
Try use Image Capture to download the pics to the Mac first, then import them, see does that help. Image Capture is in your Applications folder.

IPhoto corrupt in all drive disks.

I installed iLife 9 and have been using iPhoto 8.1.1 successfully, in conjunction with iPhoto Library Manager, in several volumes. Quite suddenly I have found the application corrupted in all of them: when I try to open any with any library it will open, but then at some point it reverts to the spinning beachball and I have to force quit. I have tried to rebuild, with both Manager and iPhoto methods, but am not able to do so. For the first time I have noticed an icon "printing" under "recent" in the resource section, and when I click on it the program stalls with the beachball.
I am inclined to dump and reinstall iPhoto from the iLife CD, but am not sure if that should be my first step. Can anyone explain what has happened and suggest a cure?

TD: I have had iPhoto installed in several of the volumes, but since I have had this problem I have removed it from all of them except this one. I believe it is the application that is the problem, because I use iPhoto Library Manager to switch between libraries and I get the behavior described above in any of the libraries that I have tried to use. It is difficult for me to believe that 5 or 6 individual libraries could have suddenly become corrupted all at once. It is easier to believe that I could have made some move that caused that aforementioned printer icon to show up in the source section of iPhoto. I may never know what I did to cause it, but that won't matter if I can get the use of iPhoto back again. I've come to think that a reinstallation from the iLife CD is the only hope. If anyone has any advice for or against that I'd like to hear it. Thanks for your interest - RF.

IPhoto corrupted....can't see any data on XML

Two days ago I purchased a 4g sandisk compact flash memory card and recorded some avis and took some pictures....which was all accidentally deleted. Since the card came with an approved-for-my-mac RescuePro recovery software, I thought I'd try it. Had a lot of problems with the serial number, so I opted to pay 40.00 for a download (the disc was a mini, and I have a laptop).
The files were successfully located. I checked them to make sure they worked. I selected about 12 jpegs and imported them into iPhoto. The thumbnails appeared very corrupted (gray pixely squares). I have had this problem before, but it never affected my iPhoto, so I simply closed iPhoto, put the jpegs in a folder so I could later upload them to the web.
I continued clearing off the desktop. I had a jpeg on there (that had not come from the lost camera files), so I dropped it on the iPhoto icon to see if it would register as a duplicate (checking before I trashed it). I received an "unreadable file" message and an error message saying my photos could not be saved.
I took the computer and hard drive (btw they are on hard drives not the mac HD-its iphoto is empty) to a new Apple place in town and they found my library with Disk Warrior.
I attempted to rebuild with library manager and it sees nothing.
Also, my iPhoto library copies on the other hard drive are unreadable by iPhoto as well.
I tried repairing permissions and they were already correct.
any advice?

Format can be ascertained by selecting the disk in the Finder and going File -> Get Info. In the Get Info window it will be either a MS DOS FAT format or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If iPhoto Library Manager won’t rebuild the Library then you’ll need to either restore from your back up or create a new Library and start over.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

IPhoto Corruption On Import

My wife and I share an iPhoto library by placing it in the Shared user folder. We are using iPhoto 9.1.5 on an intel iMac with the latest system software. When I inport new photos to the library, thumbnails for all of them appear fine. However, the larger view does not work for the landscape oriented photos. When I try to expand them, I get an exclamation point inside of a triangle. Interestingly, the photos with a portrait orientation are fine. When my wife downloads when she is logged in, everything works fine. But many of the landscape photos she imported get corrupted when I download photos under my log in.
This has been an ongoing problem. Are we doing something wrong?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Chose to check and repair Library permissions. You may need to do this from both accounts.
I see quite a few reports of this in the last while. A more lasting solution might be to move the Library to a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.

IPhoto corrupts the view of my Nikon D800 photos when zooming or switching to edit mode

I am viewing RAW files from a Nikon D800. Initially the files show correctly but after a while the views starts corrupting when I zoom in and sometimes when I enter the edit mode. The files themselves are ok, it is just the preview that corrupts.
Once this has happened the only way to restore normality is to reboot the iMac. Closing and reopening iPhoto does not fix it.
I am using iPhoto 9.5.1 on OSX 10.9.4 (iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2010).
I have a Nikon D7000 as well and editing these photos I have no problems. Perhaps it is the larger file size...?

That could be an issue with the graphics card.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If it is, switch to another user account and repeat the test there.

Iphoto corrupting photo files

My photos are not corrupted on my compact flash card...the card reader is not corrupting them...but when I import them to iphoto...it corrupts about 20-30 of my photos from the shoot...this doesn't happen when I download them to anyone else's computer, either...I was wondering if anyone knew what I could do to make this problem go away?...

Could you give a little more detail on what you mean by "corrupt". iPhoto won't accept them, they look wrong or what. It would help us to determine what might be going on.

Running iphoto 08, when uploading photos from iphone 4s about 1 in 4 get corrupted: lines or washed out colors and many videos fail to import.
It seems hit or miss: does not always happen.
Is Apple aware of this?

Iphoto corrupting files

Hi,
I have a fairly large library of about 10,100 photo's. First off I wonder if this is a problem, can iphoto handle such a load. Secondly I have been discovering random photo's that will no longer open, the ball spins indefinately on a white screen. When I go the jpg itself in the library it won't open as well, it says, "may be a corrupt file." Photoshop will not open these files either. I pulled out my backup library which I'd saved on a separate firewire drive a few months ago and these same photo's are not corrupt and work fine when I replace the corrupt ones. Has anyone experienced this or know how the files may have been corrupted?

I too have trouble with Iphoto files going corrupt. I don't know why. I will be working and all at once some or all the phot go blank. I just have a series of outlined blank boxes. I have renamed the Ilibrary foler and created new ones and I still get the problem. I've this happen about 4 times. I am extremely frustrated. I'm getting afraid to do new projects for fear of putting all the time in and then not be able to run IMovie or IDVD because Iphot is messed up. Does anyone know why this corruption is happening? It seems like there are a lot of other people out there having similar problems. I use my Mac mostly for photo projects. Although a loyal fan of macs for years I about to the point I want to give up on it. Sorry about the venting but I'm reallyyyyyyyyyy frustrated.

Iphoto corrupted after March Update

By corrupt I mean the application is nowhere to be found on my Macbook, to add to this when this update occured it also erased my Photoshop application and corrupted my preview application. It seems to have corrupted every photography related application I had installed...please I beg for help, since my advanced photoshop course begins in a month...

I've seen no reports anywhere of iPhoto updates erasing iPhoto, Photoshop and so on. I wold suspect another cause. However, the simple solution is to re-install the applications, no?

IPhoto Corrupt

I have an issue which I have seen a number of times on these pages. but the solutions won't quite work in my instance. Can you help...
Just upgraded to 10.9.3 and to iPhoto 9.5 and I am having problems getting iPhoto to see my library. Trying to open iPhoto has corrupted my library, which seems to be caused by an Ampersand (&) in the AlbumData.XML file. This isn't a huge issue as I have a backup of the Library.
While I can change the & to an and in the AlbumData.xml file, the problem is that iPLM can not then see the photos as the Ampersand was in the name of the external hard drive which contains the library. So changing the AlbumData.xml file to Music and Photos means iPLM is then looking for images located on a drive called Music & Photos. How can I change the AlbumData file name to eliminate the Ampersand and still get iPLM to see the volume where the photos are located?
(While I can change the name of the actual drive itself, as the iPhoto Library located there is the corrupt version, I am having to use the backup version. As this was backed up from the original Music & Photo drive, all the photos contained in the library have a location of Volumes/Music & Photos/etc.)
Hope I have explained this clearly! Any help gratefully received.

do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or have you unchecked that opition giving your a strongly not recommended referenced library?
where is your iPhoto library located? If on an external drive wht format is the drive?
Note - you must NEVER make any changes to the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder - and if you have a referenced library you must not change the path to the photos in any way - there are no user servicable parts in the iPhoto library

IPhoto Corrupting Mail.app Signatures

As a PGP user, I attach a copy of my public key to the signature of my emails. I have just started using iPhoto and have found that if one uses the email function from iPhoto (which exports the selected picture to a mail compose pane) then the attached file in the signature becomes corrupted: it loses its correct file type, becoming a generic 'document' entitled 'Unknown'.
This does not seem to be an issue with the .asc file format PGP uses.
After some testing this morning, I found that the same occurs if one has .pdf, .txt, or .rtf files in one's mail signature.
I would be interested to know:
1. If others know of a solution/workaround for this problem, or
2. if others can confirm that this problem occurs on their systems (and if so, which versions of Mail, iPhoto and the system are being used).
I'd like to know if this is a replicable problem with others before lodging a bug report with Apple.

Did you check to see if any of the recipients had filters in place to ignore or delete HTML emails, or emails with attachments? If not, that could be the issue. Have you tried testing these by sending messages from one of your email accounts to a different one to see if you receive them?
As for a limit, there might be, but Apple has never stated that there is, so unless you reach a point where it refuses to accept or use a particular signature, I'd have to guess the answer is 'No'. There'd be no point in limiting content, since as long as an email uses valid HTML or CSS markup, you should be able to include it in a signature; but testing before actually using is always advised.

IPhoto corrupted..i think

before this..it corrupted and i got it fixed by bringing it to Apple and now it corrupted AGAIN !! when i open it..theres nothing but a moving circle and i kept waiting and waiting and nothing happens..i am tired of brining it to Apple again so is there anyway i can fix it on my own?

you can try rebuilding your iPhoto library - depress the command and option keys and launch iPhoto - do the repair library first - if that does not fix it backup and rebuild the library - of use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to rebuild it
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

IPhoto/corrupted files/restore from remote?

HELP! iPhoto has decided overnight that some of my photos are corrupt. is there ANY way to restore them--maybe from the synced off-site iDisk? It seems to be random as to which are corrupted, and it changes from opening to opening. The thumbnails are there, clearly visible. Double clicking does nothing, dumping the plist does nothing.

ladyirol's right about the iDisk. I forgot about that. I've not used that capability so don't know if you can bring back from you iDisk but that would be way to go. If the iPhoto Library folder can be brought down intact and placed on your desktop to compare between it and your current library that would allow you to make see which new files in your current library that are OK you want to save to import into the backup library. You can use iPhoto Library Manager to copy photos, rolls and or albums between two libraries. The free version will only copy 20 at a time.

IDVD causing iPhoto corruption?

Newly purchased iLife '11. Installed iDVD only ( did not come w/ my Mac )

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For OS X 10.7.5 the latest version of iPhoto that can be run is iPhoto 9.4.3. To get that version install iPhoto from the iLife 11 disk (do a custom Install) to get iPhoto 9.0. Then use the following updaters to get to iPhoto 9.4.3:
update to iPhoto 9.3
update to iPhoto 9.3.2
update to iPhoto 9.4
and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3

Fixing iPhoto Corruption and Strangeness

Lost photos? Huge CPU usage continuously for no reason? Crashes? Things generally not right?
Try rebuilding your iPhoto library.
First, back up your existing library.
Then, hold down Shift-Option-Apple while starting iPhoto. Keep holding the keys down until you get a box asking if you want to rebuild your library. Check all boxes that make sense to you.
It will take a while, but you'll get a fresh new library that solves a lot of issues.
