IPhoto '08 (7.0.1) has scambled some of my albums

I upgraded my existing iPhoto album from the '06 version to the new '08 version. In doing so, a few strange things happened.
I have about 2200 photos and most of them were already organizaed into albums under iPhoto '06. I was going through some of my albums and noticed that, while all the thumbnails appear in the correct albums, when I click the albums to view the larger image, instead I get a giant (and very blurry) grey spot with an exclamation point on it.
I was worried that iLife had somehow corrupted the photos or lost them completely. Turns out if I look at the name of the photo image (the name in the filesystem), and then do a Spotlight search for the file, these images are all found -- but NOT in the albums where they are supposed to be.
Something about the upload seems to have relocated some of the photos. I haven't gone through everything to find out how many are misplaced.
Does anyone know of a way to get iPhoto to validate the library and correct this? I considered attempting to manually move the files around in the hidden filesystem below iPhoto... but I'm not sure how iPhoto will react to this.

I called AppleCare and they walked me through the rebuild. There are several options... and they wanted me to select all rebuild options. It took about 8 minutes to do my library (of about 2100 photos).
Unfortunately it didn't correct the problem.
Upon re-opening iPhoto, the same "lost" photos were still lost. Thumbnails showed up in the correct albums where I put them, but the full-size versions of the pictures couldn't be found (and were still in the wrong folder).
iPhoto 7 ('08) defines the iPhoto Library as a 'Package' on the Mac -- which hides the actual structure of the filesystem below the package name. This (hopefully) keeps users from messing with it. BUT... by right-clicking the package name, there's an option to 'show package contents' and it's possible to see how it's organized things. (A word to the wise: NEVER attempt to manually move files or photos around inside the iPhoto Library -- let iPhoto manage this library itself).
I'd say the 'library' is partially corrupt, but the files are fine. E.g. once Spotlight shows me where a picture is located, I can open these pictures and it opens with no problem. The problem seems to be iPhoto confusion in that I originally put photos into albums as usual, but a few of them ended up having their full-sized images moved to different albums even though the thumbnails were still in the original albums and the meta-data was telling iPhoto that the photos were still present, when they were not.
The rebuild completed by didn't correct the problem, but since I had taken a good backup the day before doing the upgrade, we quit iPhoto, drug the iPhoto '08 library to the trash, restored the backup, then started iPhoto and allowed it to 'upgrade' the library again.
After restoring the backup & re-upgrading the library again, it seems to have worked. I am unable to find any other corruption and all seems well.
None of the missing photos were pictures that I had played with since upgrading. I had done some re-organizing of 'events' by splitting some events apart (when I could clearly see pictures together that were taken at different real-life activities) and also merged some events back together (e.g. pictures taken on just one vacation would appear as many events because each import from the camera is assumed to be a different event). I don't know if the manipulation of "events" could have caused the problem with Albums.
For now, it's working, I have the original backup (which I'll never delete), and I'll keep an eye on iPhoto and hope this doesn't occur again.

  • IPhoto does not read images/has moved the images

    Hi,
I was importing pictures from my iPhoto library to a friends HDD last night, and when the import finished I found my 2010 folder of pictures that should have been in the iPhoto library, on my desktop for some reason. Without thinking and after checking iPhoto to realize that it wouldn't read my images, I immediately put it back into the appropriate iPhoto location, where it did nothing.
Now I can't read any of my images, they are essentially all lost. I have time machine backups but I don't understand why it doesn't work, I tried to back the iphoto file up to the last backup I had but nothing happened.
Why does iPhoto appear as a file (not a folder) when I view it in finder, but when I right click an image while iPhoto is running to view it's location, the iPhoto file is now a folder with all my pictures.
My only backup is the time machine backups but I don't know why it won't work... Please help, I want all my pictures back and not just the thumbnails
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I believe that that restored the photos to the existing iPhoto library with sound like has been corrupted
I would suggest opening Time Machine in the dock and going back to a time before the problem, selecting the iPhoto library at that time and clicking restore and using the keep both option to restore the backup to a different location
Depress the option key and launch iPhoto and switch to the restored library and test it - once you have a good, working library you can delete the old library form your pictures folder and move the working library there - option launch again to point to the restored library
then do the import again -
Nothing about doing an import should do what you described - something else caused that
And in the future remember that you must NEVER make any changes of any sort (including dropping folders into it) to the content or structure of the iPhoto library using the finder

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"
    Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Why can I no longer find my iphotos?  Updated from 10.6 to 10.8.2 recently... The iphoto logo in my dock has been replaced with a transparent, grey, question mark... why? How do I restore my iphotos?  Searched for them in Finder, and in "search"... they appear as text only.. but no photos.. please help.. Mark

Have you verified that the iPhoto applications is not in the Applications folder or somewhere else on the hard drive?
To do so download and use  Find Any File to search for "iPhoto.app" because FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't.  If the application is somewhere else on the HD FAF will find it.  However, I doubt that it will be there but it's worth a search.

  • ITunes 11 has converted some songs to Quicktime movie format. How can I convert them back to MPEGs? format

iTunes 11 has converted some songs to Quicktime movie format. How can I convert them back to MPEGs?

I didn't mess with the iTunes Media folder previously, so I don't think that was the cause. Anyway, I manually fixed most of the songs, but I still can't figure out how to fix the movies that became listed as songs.
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when I click on "Get Info" for one of the movies (which has ended up in the music section on iTunes):
There is no option to change the media kind to "movie" or "video" even though it is a movie and it still plays as a movie if I press play.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

There are different templates for iPhoto books and they differ from version of iPhoto to iPhoto, so explore the other options.

  • I thing I have some phishing going on, there has been some emails going around that I haven't sent plus getting emails from friends who haven't sent them, what to do?

I think I have some phishing going on, there has been some emails I have received from people I know that haven't been sent also people have said I've sent out some when I haven't , how do I investigate this?

What you describe is generally not an issue with your computer. Everyone gets phishing e-mails unless you or your ISP has blocked them.
As for e-mails from friends that they didn't send, these are usually because someone insists on putting 200 address in their e-mails with a link to a cat video. If people used distribution lists or the bcc field for mass mailings, the chance of this is reduced. Probably one of your frineds has a Windows virus that is stealing e-mail addresses, or their hotmail. msn, or outlook account has been hacked.
You probably don't need to do anything from your end

  • I am using iPhoto 11 and my library has 736.5mb on disk. I have problems with iPhoto stalling and needing to force quit. I have rebuilt my library. Can you suggest anything else?

I am using iPhoto 11 and my library has 736.5mb on disk. I have problems with iPhoto stalling and needing to force quit. I have rebuilt my library. Can you suggest anything else? Thanks, Rose

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that does'nt help log into another user account on your Mac and try iPhoto from there.

  • XFi-2- Latest firmware (1.20.08) has caused some issues on 32GB model...

HXFi-2- Latest firmware (.20.08) has caused some issues on 32GB model... When I started my PC last night, it notified me that new firmware was avaliable so it downloaded it and installed it on my Xfi-2 32GB
According to the release notes, it was to add support for the 64 GB model as well as some general improvements.
I can't determine what the latest improvements were (anyone have any clues ) and the UI seems the same.....the only things that have changed are that my applications no longer work (when I go into the applications shortcut, it says there is no valid content: I haven't touched these folders etc and they are still populated with the three standard apps as far as I can tell)
The other thing (which may not be related to the firmware upgrade) is that my photos shortcut now pulls up some of my music folders that contain album art. Is this a feature or a bug (I don't want it to happen, I just want it to show photos within the 'photos' folder on the device).... I think it may have been caused by me simply dragging and dropping music folders onto the device using windows explorer rather than going through Centrale (slow!)
    Cheers

    Hi Timmo.
What release notes are you reading? I have seen no reference to improvements other than adding support for the new 64 GB model on this firmware version. From the description of the problems you have, it seems that your player has some sort of file system corruption on the internal flash. I would suggest reinstalling the firmware on your device after formatting it (formatting the device only should be enough, I think).
The size of the new firmware release, double than the size on the previous one, means that it probably has new features and applications that will be enabled on the future; however I doubt it means it has new features right now and hope it does not means we have two firmwares (on for the 64 GB model and other for the previous ones) as the SRM/AlphaBIOS pair on the Digital Alpha systems (an ugly hack on these superb computers, in my humble opinion) -- by the way, the new firmware does not require more space on the internal flash (I have 5077 MB available on mine with all firmware releases).
The behavior you describe about album art being shown on the photos shortcut happens with older firmware releases too; I prefer album art embedded on the audio files instead of being available as another file. I agree with you, only pictures under the photos directory should be shown as images.
    Cheers.

backup your iPhoto library and launch iPhoto while holding the option and command keys down until the first aid window appears - repair your database and if necessary rebuild the database

That is correct - you must have a photo in every photo frame to order
