IPhoto 08 and CDs with libraries

Hello,
I just installed iPhot 08 which should be an improvement against older versions. That' right; BUT:
When I want to read a library on a a CD (R or RW) I cannot do it now directly. Instead, I have to go he awkward, time-consuming way of copying the library to my hard disk and then open it with iPhoto.
Does anyone know a better solution?
Hans

I do have a workaround to that you can import the photos in the library on the disk and retain all of your keywords, albums, etc. That is if you can successful copy the iPhoto LIbrary folder from the disk to the desktop. It requires the purchased version of iPhoto Library Manager.
1 - copy the folder from the disk to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select "Choose Library", navigate to the desktop and open the library there. You will be notified that the library will need to be updated to the latest version. Select update.
3 - Once the library has been updated quit iPhoto.
4 - launch iPLM and get both libraries to be recognized by iPLM in the left hand pane.
5 - use the File->Merge Libraries menu option to merge the desktop library into your library in the Pictures folder.
I know it requires the purchase of iPLM but that's the only easiest way available to get those photos into iPhoto and keep their keywords.
There is another method that might work. Here's how:
1 - copy the folder from the disk to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select "Choose Library", navigate to the desktop and open the library there. You will be notified that the library will need to be updated to the latest version. Select update
3 - download the demo version of iView MediaPro.
4 - launch iVMP and follow the first 7 steps of Old Toad's Tutorial #1.
5 - close iVMP and open the iPhoto Library package on the desktop like this and drag the Originals folder to the desktop.
6 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and open your library that's in the Pictures folder.
7 - drag the Originals folder from the Desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will import each event/roll in previous versions) into your library and will keep the keywords, titles and comments intact.
FWIW iPhoto Library Manager is one of the best iPhoto addons you can have if you intend to use iPhoto a lot. With it you can have multiple libraries and copy photos between them (keeping keywords, titles and comments intact), merge libraries, etc.
Hope one of these workarounds will help.

  • How do I upgrade to iphoto 11, and stick with my OS 10.6.8?

iphoto 11 says that you must have an OS of 10.7.3 or such...?
I probably screwed up... I've been wanting my desktop and notebook to allow me to seamlessly look at each other's files for awhile now.  And to save to icloud but that's another story.  Finally I let the newer notebook with iphoto 11 access the imac's 09 iphoto library and it proceeded (for about 8 hours) to update the images so they would be readable with iphoto 11.  So now I'm back where I started and only the notebook can see the upgraded photos which are stored on the imac and the imac can't read them with its older version of iphoto.  So I went to upgrade the imac to iphoto 11 but it says I must have OS 10.7.3 or greater, I don't.  I have 10.6.8, but so does the laptop.  So I'm trying to upgrade to iphoto 11 with the imac, just so it can read the library, but not the newest iphoto 11, the one for 10.6.8....help?!

You'll need to purchase an iLife 11 disk. Install it but don't upgrade to v9.3 - stop at v9.2. That's now the only way to get iphoto11 on 10.6

  • Hi, my 2 kids each have an account on my iMac and simultaneously lost the iphoto application and the respective libraries of photos. Mine is ok. Any suggestions to either find their location? Have searched through what I think is as much as I can.

Hi, my 2 kids who have an account each on my iMac have simultaneously lost their iPhoto apps and libraries. Can't find it anywhere. My iPhoto and library still remains. Any suggestions?

Are you sure that's what happened?
Typically, there is one iphoto on your computer and each account uses that, so there's no iPhoto for each account. So if you have they should too. Where is it missing from?
The disappearing libraries: did they rename their accounts by any chance?

  • Using both iphoto 4 and 6 with same library-is this possible?

I just bought ilife 06 for my desktop computer (g4 400, tiger) but I also have an ibook (g3 500, panther) with iphoto 4 on it.
I have been using iphoto on the ibook, and have a fairly large library.
I would like to share the same library between the two computers, but I'm not sure that this is possible-it seems, from my research, that iphoto 6 uses a different file format, and I'm worried that if I open (or import) the library in iphoto 6, I won't be able to use it in iphoto 4 anymore.
lots of instances of the letter 'i' in this post

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Once a library is upgraded to V6 it will to be usable by any previous version of iPhoto. So if you want to have the library on both computers you'll have to copy the V4 to the G4 library and convert it to V6 and run it as V6 and keep the iBook's library at V4. You might be able to connect the two computers together and try to share one library with the other (see iPhoto's preferences). I don't know if both libraries need to be the same version for that type of sharing as I've never done it.

  • IPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand with multiple apple ID's.

    Hello,
First of all I want to excuse myself for my bad english. It's not my native language.
I've bought a Macbook Air 11" two weeks ago and I logged in the app store using an "old" apple ID. Now that I wanted to use a new apple ID to start "clean" I also decided to reinstall my macbook.
Once I tried to redownload iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand I got the message that those applications are "attached" to a other account. I still got that account, but I want to know if I can "remove" those apps on the "old" account and download them using my "new" account.
I don't want to keep two accounts because I logged in the first time with a other account. Is this possible?
    Cheers,
    Sq

So the first time you log in with an apple id the apps are "attached" to that account without any notice? I can't even purchase them. Reinstalling my mac didn't give me back the applications either. I'm flabbergasted how the apple ID's work and that they can get away with this. Support must come from other users as I can't depend on Apple themselfs. Unbelievable...
    Thanks for the suppor Carolyn.

  • HT1229 iPhoto 6 and 8 with photos on two macs need merged

I've got iPhoto 6 on my iMac and iPhoto 8 on my Macbook, and want to move the newer Macbook photos into the old iMac library, which is set up with time machine to back up. Any way to do this without destroying the exisiting old iMac library?

Try use iPhoto Library Manager to move the images from one to the other. You can do a trial without paying to be sure it works.

  • Can you order prints thought iPhoto '11 and pay with iTunes credit?

I'd like to know if you can pay for photo prints through the "Order Prints" service in iPhoto with iTunes credit.

Maybe - in the past you could not - give it a try and post back with the results.

  • Aperture 3, iPhoto-08 and Locate Referenced Files

I usually import my photos to iPhoto-08 and work with my favorite ones in Aperture as Referenced Files.
After upgrading my hard drive and using SuperDupper to restore my system to the new drive, the referenced masters are missing. I have tried Locate Referenced Files but the problem is that the iPhoto-o8 Library is shown as empty which is not. Navigating the bottom panel in Relocate Referenced Files, iPhoto-08 Library only shows 2 folders: Events and Last Import, with nothing inside them.
Using Aperture iPhoto Browser I can see that all the files are in there. Using Finder I can see all my files under iPhoto-08 Library->Originals. No problem under iPhoto either.
The problem seems to be that Aperture doesn't recognize iPhoto-08 Library structure since I upgraded my hard drive.
Has any one had this problem? Any solution?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adolfo

I just found out this piece of information:
"Yep - Aperture 2 lets you reference files in your iPhoto libraries, while Aperture 3 does not... I have imported all my iPhoto libraries to the Aperture library now in a separate location from the iPhoto libraries."
    Can somebody confirm this?

  • Support lost for H264 videos between iPhoto 8 and iPhoto 11

Finally tracked down a nagging problem which seems only to be solved by forking over $$ for a video codec from third party to enable playing videos from a Bushnell Trophy Cam SD card.  iPhoto '08 had no trouble playing the videos using Quicktime 7.  iPhoto '11 now fails to recognize the same videos which are titled e.g. PICT0001.AVI.  They are supposedly in H264 format.  I have two MacBookPro laptops - both using Lion - one with iPhoto '08 and one with '11.  No other real differences.
The free codecs don't quite include all the video info; I can find non-free codecs which will open the AVI's with no lost information but I would rather not buy them to replace a function that was previously free.
    Any suggestions?

You can delete the empty one by dragging it to the trash ( test everything before emptying the trash)
Merging libraries requires iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only current solution to merging libraries

  • Can I install iPhoto 9 AND iPhoto 11 with seperate libraries?

    Hi....
In view of the negative comments that some have made about iPhoto11 and before I actually install it... is it possible, or any reason why not to install BOTH iPhoto 9 and iPhoto11 on my iMac? I appreciate that they would have to have separate and individual libraries and that is fine with me ...
As iPhoto is just another app, then I am guessing that there should be no reason why I cannot have two versions of it running....
Any comments would be most appreciated.
    Regards
    Derek

No there's no reason. Put 09 into a Folder so the installer won't find it and overwrite it. hen make sure you keep the two libraries separate.
But you know, most folks have upgraded with no issues. As always, make sure you have a back up.

  • Hi. I setup an external hard drive on my AirPort Extreme to act as a central disk for multiple iPhoto libraries. I have a new iMac with iPhoto '11 and an MBPro with iPhoto '09. I'm getting an error message saying different versions. Ideas?

Long title. Sorry. It pretty much explains the situation. I'd like to have all of my photos from two (ultimately three) computers on this central file and be able to access them from any of the computers. The error message I get when I start up my MBPro is: "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto" and, "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." It then forces me to quit iPhoto. I have tried the suggestion of holding down the opt key on iPhoto startup, but it doesn't seem to help.
    Two questions:
Can I store multiple iPhoto libraries on the same central disc?
If so, how should I address the error message?
    Thank you!

Hey Kappy, thank you for your help! Yes, I can open both libraries on the iMac without problem. I am still confused why the computer that created one of the libraries cannot open said library after it was moved to the external disk. Why is the iPhoto format not readable by all versions across the board?? The reason I'm pushing the issue is because in my household, we have an older MB, my wife's MBP, my MBP and now a new "family" iMac. The MB (circa 2007) has an old version of iPhoto, the two MBP's have iPhoto '08 and the new iMac has '11. It is my goal to have all of the photos that we've accrued over the years, located centrally, and accessible from all of these computers. Is iPhoto the most appropriate program, or would Lightroom make more sense?

  • Sharing iphoto and itunes with accounts on the same computer

I have admin rights on the PC and would like to give the guest account access (on the same PC) to the i-photo and i-tunes libraries under my account. How can I do that

    What version of iPhoto?
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How do I move organized photos from dropbox to iPhoto and share with another user on the same mac?

I have about 3,500 photos sitting in dropbox and just purchased my first mac yesterday.  My husband and I each have our own Ipad and our own user id's on the mac.  I moved two of the folders to Iphoto and it shows up on my screen in the right folders.  However, on my Ipad, it shows all of them under one Photostream and not organized.  They don't show up on my husband's "side of the computer" at all.
    So my questions are:
    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
    2.  How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
    Thanks!

    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
If you use the Photo Stream, the organisation in iPhoto will be lost - there is just one endless stream.  YOu could sync your photos using iTunes. Then you will see the synced albums in the Photos.app on the iPad.
See this link:   iOS and iPod: Syncing photos using iTunes
How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
On the same iPad?  Do you mean on the same mac?
If you want to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same mac, the iPhoto library should be on a separate disk partition or even better, on a separate external disk. Then you can set the flag "Ignore ownership on this volume" to avoid permission problems. Both of you will be able to browse the iPhoto library and can edit the photos within.
See this support document:  iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
If both of you want to keep separate iPhoto libraries but share the photos, you could share selected albums as Shared PhotoStreams and invite each other to browse them. This would require iOS 7. Do you have iOS 7 on your iPad?  Each Shared Photo Stream will be shown as a separate album on your iPad .

  • When I click on almost any picture, in any album, to enlarge it, the pic starts to enlarge and then all I get is a black screen with a large exclamation point in the center.  What have I done to my iPhoto program, and how do I fix it?

Recently, whenever I click on almost any of my pictures, in any album, in order to enlarge that photo, it starts to enlarge but then,
very quickly I get a black screen with a large white exclamation mark in the middle.  And no full sized photo. Boo!
What did I do to my iPhoto program, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Mike H.

I'm sorry.  Too old to understand this stuff.  I'm sure this seems real stupid to you.  But I have no idea how one
would "right click on the Original iPhoto Library" (I know, I know, 'as stated").
Do I right click on the symbol in the dock??  Or open it first and then, . .  I can't find a way to right click on the word iPhoto in the top bar.
Or should I open the program you had me download.  There I can find something called "original iPhoto library".
When I "right click" on that I get some options.  None of them are "original folders".  There's "reveal library in finder", and "dupilicate library and "sort libraries".  I have no idea if any of these are what you want, or if any of these might change something.
When I clicked on "reveal library in finder" earlier on it showed me the copy of the photo library that I made a while ago, sitting right where I know it is on my desktop.  And if I click on that symbol it shows me all the pictures again.  Just like in my regular iPhoto files - all the thumbs are there, but most can't be opened to full sized.
Are we making progress here?  I'm sure this is frustrating to you.  This is just pictures of family.  Even the thumbs are nice to look at.  But this is nothing critical - like work related or anything.
    Thanks.
    Mike
