Iphoto 08 and events

Installed ilife08 the other day and love the new events feature in iphoto. However, once I went to Apple TV there are no events. Is there something I need to do to have events show up on Apple TV or does this feature not yet work with Apple TV?

I've spent the last couple of days reorganising my events after iphoto had created them from my existing library, I understand why iphoto has created the events the way it has done and although from now on new imports will be dealt with in an entirely intuitive way, reorganising old photo events will likely be a necessity for all of us.
I don't believe events are intended to replace albums although I do agree that events are potentially far more flexible than albums and many may get more benefit from using events instead of albums from now on as you suggest.
However events essentially replace the library (not albums) and make the long list of every photo you have into something entirelty maneagable. The reason why events would not be a suitable entity to sync to the tv is that events contain every photo you have and each photo can only be included in a single event, wheras albums contain exactly what you choose.
It's true that many events may contain exactly what is wanted as a slideshow on the tv, but with albums as the source for the tv all you need to do is highlight every photo in that event and create an album, however if events were to replace albums as the source for the tv, how would you fulfill the requirement of having the same photo in two different albums/event.
In actual fact the reason the tv still only syncs with albums is that it would require an upgrade for itunes to enable the syncing of events. The possibility that this may happen still exists but all I am saying is that it's not a case of me not grasping the isea of events but rather that you haven't thought through the consequences of making events rather than albums the sync source for the tv because in my opinion it wouldn't work.

  • REQUEST: Differentiate between iPhoto and Events

Hey there. Just got iLife 08 and I really like it.
However, I have a major problem with iPhoto '08. I like the Events feature, but I have a ton of random photos that don't necessarily qualify as an event. Random shot here or there.
In all previous iterations of iLife, the Albums and Library were only loosely linked. That is, you could delete a photo from album "Summer 07" and it wouldn't delete it from the Library. The iTunes playlist approach to photo organization, as it were.
Now, I expected/hoped/assumed the same functionality would be extended to Events. It wasn't. I found this out after I'd deleted about a quarter of my photo library. Thankfully the undo button averted disaster.
I don't understand why this works this way. If I have a random snapshot of, say, a sunset, one which doesn't fit into any event either contextually or chronologically, I'd like to be able to delete it from an Event while keeping it in my Library.
I could, of course, just split off all those photos and have one big "Miscellaneous" event. But that seems to run counter to the stated purpose of Events, and it's pretty darn tedious, and I don't understand why I can't just delete a few odd photos from the Events window without erasing them off of my computer.
Am I missing some big trick? Is there any way to change this?
    Thanks.

The problem you're having is that you're assuming the new events replace the flexibility of the old albums. That's just not so.
Pre-iPhoto 08, all your photos were permanently stored in the library, and grouped by time of import into "film rolls". Using your example, all your weekend events would be imported into 1 roll. From that roll, you could create as many albums as you liked. Or, you could split that album into multiple rolls, if, say, one memory card was used to shoot a football game, a sunset, and then a concert. It was up to you. Create albums, split the film roll, or both. You were happy then, I assume.
Now with iPhoto 08, essentially NOTHING HAS CHANGED! You still have the flexibility to create your albums for football and concert, and leave all the originals in the library, including the sunset that doesn't go with the game or concert.
Only 2 things have changed: (1) film rolls are now called 'events', and (2) instead of importing your whole memory card into a single roll, iPhoto uses your preferences to automatically separate your photos into separate rolls based on when they were shot. (you could still do this before, just manually)
You basically have two primary means of organizing your photos: manually with albums, or automatically (via date) with events. The benefit of using albums is that it gives you the ultimate control that you want, while leaving the random photos protected in the library. The con is that you have to create and manage albums manually. The benefits of using events are that they're neatly organized by date and you have the flexibility to manually override their creation by splitting them or moving photos to any event you choose. The con of events is that, as sub-folders of the master library, every photo must be in an event, which forces you to create miscellaneous events of 1 or 2 photos--which admittedly clutters up your library--but only if you want that granularity of organization. There's nothing stopping you from having 1 single event called "football game, drunken roommate, and concert", and then 2 albums for the game and concert.
I tend to take photos like you do: many photos of particular events, with random scattered shots of wildlife in my yard, wrecks by the side of the road, cats doing funny things, etc. And I, too, don't like having lots of extra film rolls (still on v6) for those miscellaneous shots that don't qualify in my mind as events worthy of their own category.
So here's what I do... I never use albums because they're just too much work and they don't sort automatically. Since nearly all of my photos fall into the classic definition of an event, I primarily use film rolls (now events) to group my photos. If a roll from a camping trip happens to have 2 photos of a wild turkey in my yard, I usually leave it in the roll, but edit the roll's description to say something like "Camping trip to Catskills (+ wild turkey in yard)". That way I can see that the roll contains miscellaneous shots, and also be able to find them in the future if I search for "turkey".
While importing new rolls/events and organizing them, if I happen to notice that I have quite a few of those miscellaneous shots in close time proximity to one another, then I'll create a "Miscellaneous-August 2007" roll/event, for example, and move them all into one place. Having them together doesn't help the random pictures at all, but it does clean up all the other events from where the random pictures came. I actually find myself doing this more frequently since I started importing the highly random photos from my cell phone. One giant "misc" event would be too crazy, and having lots of scattered 1- or 2-pic events would be too cluttered. But having just 1 misc event per month seems to be a good compromise for me.
Apple is definitely not at fault in designing events. Really, they're nothing new compared to film rolls, except that they can split photos while importing. If you loved the old albums, then stick with them. They're 100% unchanged and still ultimately flexible. Otherwise, know the constraints of events, and make decisions based on what's important to you.

  • Photo Stream, iPhoto and events

Photo stream is not creating new "events" when it downloads photos.  Instead, it has been putting new photos in an old event (same event every time). This started with the most recent iPhoto upgrade. Is there any way to fix this?

That's how it works. Otherwise you could have a thousand new Events every month.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways.

On the bottom bar of the window (on the left iPhoto 11, on the right in other versions) note the slider. Drag it left.

  • Missing all photos and events after upgrading to Photos from iPhoto

I just upgraded to photos from iPhoto.
When I opened Photos for the first time it asked if I wanted to move / import from iPhoto to the new photos app I said yes.
A message came up that said that I needed to repair the permissions on my iPhoto library I said ok.
When the library opened in Photos there was nothing there. It was as if the library was brand new with instructions on how to add images and events.  I went to iPhoto to open the library. Same thing iPhoto now looks like new with information on how to import photos and create events!
Where are all of my images?
How do I get them back?
    Thanks!

HA! User Error. Supper embarrassing. So... Is there a way to delete this request?

  • Photos on iPad and iPhone as Events that i have already deleted in iPhoto and can't find out how to delete?!

Photos on iPad and iPhone as Events that i have already deleted in iPhoto and can't find out how to delete?!

I had an album on my iPad that didn't have a delete option. I was able to finally remove everything by connecting the iPad to iTunes and going to the Photos tab. Select sync photos. It will ask you if you want to replace all photo on iPad with sync photos. Apply the setting and then un-sync photo again. It will then remove all photos on iPad starting with a clean slate.
Be sure to backup all your photos before doing this. Hope that helps.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

  • How to move Projects and Events with iPhoto video included in iMovie '11?

I work with a group of educators using iPads for video. One method for getting their clips into iMovie '11 is via iPhoto and then using the iPhoto Video link in iMovie to get the footage on a timeline (trying to import directly into iMovie '11, using the iPad as a "camera", has proved inconsistent, especially with footage from iStopMotion or Filmic Pro 1 and 2).
The problem is, when it comes time to copy or move an event and project, the iPhoto clips don't come along; they are dependent on the iPhoto library, so you can't continue editing on a different machine. I tried File > Consolidate Media, but it was inactive (in my test project, all clips came from iPhoto). If I look at Reveal in Browser, it goes to the bowels of the iPhoto library. If I copy the project to another drive, it too, points to the iPhoto library (if I'm on the same machine; otherwise it doesn't see it). I also tried optimizing the footage in the hope that it would create an Event with optimized clips that I could then transfer.
Am I missing something? It seems nuts that you can't transfer work to another machine without manually picking through the bowels of iPhoto. These days, lots of shooting is done on iPads and iPhones. Any help would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be that in the future, they upload photos only to iphoto, and upload video clips directly to iMovie. In the early days of iOS, going through iPhoto was the only way, so it is a habit that I have had to break.
With iOS 5 and 6, iMovie now recognizes the iPhone and the iPad as cameras.
I agree that the Consolidate Media command should bring over iPHoto movies along with the photos. I suggest that you go to iMovie/Provide Feedback and let the developers know that you would like this feature.

  • Tried to reinstall iPhoto library from external hard drive, it shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.

My hard drive crashed recently and we took it to apple to get repaired. The apple employees said that they would have to replace the hard drive but they didn't have the equipment to get the data off my hard drive. So I took it to a computer store who had the right equipment after a month and a half of waiting they finally got all the data off my hard drive and put it on an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable Drive). I then took it back to apple who replaced the hard drive. Now I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. I have never done a Time Machine back up or backed my laptop up to . Which I now will do very often once I've reinstalled everything. I have reinstalled all of my desktop images and folders as well as my iTunes library with no issues. However when i went to reinstall my iPhoto library it came up blank. I then Rebuilt the library several times and this was the result.
It shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.
Please help i have three years worth of images from holidays on here and would be devastated if i lost them.

iPhoto cannot find the thumbnails or the original pictures.
Go to your iPhoto Library in the Pictures Folder.
Right-click on it and from the resulting menu, choose 'Show Package Contents'.
This will bring you inside the iPhoto Library package. There you should see a Folder called Masters. Within that, there should be folder containing your actual photos.
    Are they there?

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Unified photo library-projects in Aperture show up as empty events in iPhoto and cannot be edited

I have events showing up in iPhoto that used to contain images and now they are empty (black). When I try to drag the event to the trash I get the error message "This event contains Aperture photos that iPhoto does not support and cannot be put into the iPhoto Trash". But the photos all originally were from iPhoto and had been imported into iPhoto. What is wrong with my unified library? How can I fix this?

This is from my unified photo library in iPhoto:
event as it appears in iPhoto (it should have photos in it)
when I try to delete the event (move it to the trash), I get the following error:

  • I have lost nearly all my photos and events.  I received a message effectively saying that I need to upgrade from an old base.  I think I may have tried to open an event that was stored in iPhoto Buddy a few days ago.

I have lost nearly all my photos and events.  I received a message effectively saying that I need to upgrade from an old base.  I think I may have tried to open an event that was stored in iPhoto Buddy a few days ago.  iPhoto Buddy is not supported in Lion.  How can I retrieve my phjotos?

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Albums and events in iPhoto

Does anyone know how to create and delete events and albums in iPhoto for iOS? I want to migrate my iPhoto lybrary from the desktop to my iPad but i cant find a way to do such basic managing.a

I was about to post a related question. I just wanted to delete an event which contained just one photo. I can hide the photo, but in the events view its still there with the hidden photo as the key photo taking up space. The only 'success' I had was to go to the Photo App, select the photo, Delete everwhere… gone. Then in iOS iPhoto, the event is still there temporarily with blank key photo, then the library auto refreshes, and then the event vanishes.
So It seems to me the Events auto generate from your Photo library metadata and thats that. Nothing you can do. You can not have a photo that does not trigger a corresponding event or I am being stupid?
