Iphoto 08 and iphoto 09  sharing a single album on a external drive

Hello all,
I have a mac mini with iphoto 08 on it as well as a Drobo external storage device that houses all my photos video and movies - I just purchased a new 24" imac that came with iphoto 09 -
Can I share the iphoto album that resides on the drobo with the mac mini as well as the new imac -
I am asked to upgrade the album when ever I open the iphoto application - if I do this then the Mac mini can not open the iphoto application - I am guessing that this is due to different versions - imovie works perfectly -
thanks !

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No - as you have observed iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 use a different library structure and neither can read the others library - iPhoto '09 can convert '08 libraries to '09 but it is (as you are warned when you do it) a one way process - if you want to share a library all versions of iPhoto must be the same so you would need to purchase iLife '09 for the mini

  • How do you export iPhoto albums to an external drive and have all the albums still labeled?

I am having an issue exporting the iphoto albums to an external drive. When I do it, it either just drops all the pictures in together or it separates them by events, but my iphotos are arranged in albums, not events so that doesn't help.  Can anyone help with this?
Also, I'm new to mac and i'm noticing iphotos has a lot of limitations...I can't save photos automatically to folders/albums in iphoto bc it doesnt show in the finder, I can't upload to facebook without doing it from iphoto, and I obviously can't save to external drive easily just yet.  Should I just be saving all of my photos in Pictures in the finder? Is there a way you can save them in pictures and then be able to open them in iphotos? I'm getting so frustrated and ready to go back to my PC. =(

    A couple of general comments:
    1. iPhoto is not compulsory. You don't have to use it.
    2. But if you do, then you're going  to need to make a small conceptual leap, and learn just a little.
The Conceptual Leap: Your Files and your Photos are not the same thing. The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
The Learning: iPhoto replaces the Finder (or file browser) for everything to do with your Photo. And I do mean everything. Organising, Editing, sharing with other apps, printing, uploading, whatever are all done either with or via iPhoto. It's you "go-to" for anything to do with your Photos.
The upshot of that is that how (or where) the files are stored doesn't matter - as long as they are safe and backed up - because after importing to iPhoto you never directly access those files again.
So, you want to organise your Photos: do it in the iPhoto Window. Events, Albums, Keywords, and so on. You do all your work via that window or the media browsers that make the Library available in every app in the OS.
So: want to edit a photo, but not with iPhoto? You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
How to access the Photos for whatever reason you may need them see this user tip:

You can more or less recreate your folder tree in the iPhoto Window - start at the bottom of your tree and drag  folder of images to the Albums Heading. iPhoto will import the images and make an album of them. Then File -> New Folder and drag the Album to that. Folders can hold nested folders and Albums. And so work from there.
But if your folder tree is date based that's a bit pointless, as the Calendar search and Smart Albums make it pretty redundant. With these you can find any photos from a specific day, week, month, year or date-range in the Library.
If the folder tree is theme based, then keywords will a more effective way of working.
And Albums are more flexible that folders in the Finder, as an image can be in any number of Albums and use no extra disk space whatever.
So, it's a whole new way of working with photos for you.
    To your specific questions:
I am having an issue exporting the iphoto albums to an external drive. When I do it, it either just drops all the pictures in together or it separates them by events, but my iphotos are arranged in albums, not events so that doesn't help

But given the above... why are you doing this? You're defeating the non-destructive workflow by doing it. Are you trying to back up?
.I can't save photos automatically to folders/albums in iphoto bc it doesnt show in the finder,
Not clear exactly what you're asking here, but does the above open some ideas?
I can't upload to facebook without doing it from iphoto
Yeah you can... For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:

    It's the first one...
and I obviously can't save to external drive easily just yet.
Yeah you can but what exactly are you trying to save, and, again, why? Different purposes have different workflows.
Should I just be saving all of my photos in Pictures in the finder?
That's a personal choics, but not if you plan on using iPhoto. And as I started with iPhoto is not compulsory... As to why you shouldn't with iPhoto:

    Reasons for bothering to learn...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

You probably have to run one or all of the IPHOTO resets/repairs over your library.   Its in IPHOTO help which keys you have to hold down while opening IPHOTO.
    Sorry don't remember which keys.

Yes, I've done it some minutes ago.

The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

  • I would like to recover photos that are in Trash in IPhoto and restore them to either specific albums or the general photo list

I have inadvertently deleted over 600 photos to trash.
I would like to restore them either to the general photo list or move them to albums.
The deleted photos and videos all are intact but I don't know how to transfer them to a folder where I can use them.
I appreciate any help you can provide.

iPHoto Trash?  open the iPhoto trash, select the photos your want to restore, right click and "Put Back"
System trash? open the system trash and drag to a desktop folder - then import into iPhoto - once they are out of iPhoto and in the system trash there is no way to put them back into events and albums - you have to start over with them

  • Iphoto and iPhoto Library Mgr help

Hi, I have an iMac and Iphoto version 8.1.2.  About a month ago I tried to log on to Iphoto to view some pictures I previously successfully downloaded.  Iphoto wouldn't open and prompted me to rebuild my library.  After reading posts on these boards, I decided to rebuild the library, and Iphoto now loads after a long time, but there are no photos in there.  After reading several more posts on these boards, I downloaded Library Manager today.  When I tried to rebuild the library, it said that no photos were found.  There are clearly photos available on my hard drive, and I see that I have a file named "album.data.xml."  I also back up to Time Machine so I assume the photos are there, but I haven't touched that yet.  What should I do next?  Thanks for your advice.

Right click on the iPhoto library and show package contents - look (do not tourch or change anything) in the masters folder - are your photos there?

  • Trouble with iPhoto and iPhoto library manager.

I had trouble with my iPhoto constantly crashing, so I downloaded and used iPhoto Library Manager. Now when I am trying to get back to using iPhoto by re-importing my pictures, I keep getting a notification saying there is not enough space on my harddrive. I have spent a long time deleting large and unneccessary files all over my computer, but I am still unable to import my images to the iPhoto library.
Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? I am starting to get worried that I will never be able to reach my pictures again
+ I have deleted all iPhoto iPod caches or whatever they're called based on recommendation from many sites.

OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • I seem to have lost iphoto and iphoto library on my iMac.  How can I recover?

iPhoto disappeared from my toolbar. I found an "iphoto library" in the trash can but it has today's date and when I access it it includes only a very limited number of my photos.
What can I do to try to find or recover my photos?

lets start by getting iPhoto back in the DOCK  --  launch it from the applications folder and in the DOCK right click and select keep in DOCK
as to backup - yes you must set backups up and keep them runing - the best first backup IMHO is Time Machine, it needa an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) that is at least 2 1/2 times the size of your main drive
As to your current problem - start by depressing the option key and launching iPhoto - use the select library command - what do you see? If there are multiple iPhoto libraries check one

  • How to share iPhoto library among users on same iMac without using an external drive?

How can I share my iPhoto library with another user on the same iMac for use with iCloud. I do not want to use an external drive.
    Thanks

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • My iphoto library says I have 8,000 pictures, but my external drive says 55,000?

When I look at the "photos" in iPhoto, at the bottom of the screen says I have about 8,000 photos in 520 events.  Earlier this evening I plugged in my LaCie 500 gb external hard drive and dragged my iPhoto library from finder into my external drive folder in order to copy it over.  However upon doing so the following little box appears:
informing me that I actually need to copy over 55,000 items.  Can someone please help me understand why this is happening? Granted I dragged my entire picture folder over, but I don't have many pictures at all in any of those other folders, less than 100 in each if that. Thanks in advance!

I should still just allow it to copy over?
    Yes - as I said
Just let it finish and then verify the library and you will be fine
Re what you are copying - several things like the iPod Photo Cache (sorry - mistyped that) can contain lots of "items" - as can the iPhoto library
Just let it finish and then verify the library and you will be fine
